I've updated to 12.04 and after that I could start my xubuntu session
anymore in ~/.xsession-errors I found an error (lost the error message).
Something about an invalid variable name. The attached patch fixed the
problem for me.

This affects me too currently. I've updated my system to 11.04 several
weeks ago. After that I had no problems with Jabber. The problems
started a few days ago.
I've tried empathy (3.2.0.1-0ubuntu1.1) and pidgin (1:2.10.0-0ubuntu2).
