[Bug 1214352] Re: [SRU] GUINT32/64_SWAP_LE_BE macros do not enclose val argument in parentheses
I fully agree that rebuilding only a few packages is no suitable general solution. But so is the recommendation to upgrade to 14.04. There is a reason that corporate environments do not upgrade so often, and even 2 years is a very short time in this context. I have only recently upgraded a few smaller networks from Windows XP to Windows 7, and I am pretty sure these will stick with it until 2020. Thats why we highly appreciated the announcement that Ubuntu 12.04 would get 5 years of LTS support, so we decided to skip 14.04 entirely and target 16.04 as the next upgrade. We cannot change that plan just because of this bug. It took us several hundreds of hours of manpower to evaluate and test the upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04, and it took the complete lifespan of 10.04 until it was done. We worked out around 50 fixes and workarounds for all sorts of weird bugs and shortcomings which are still not fixed, and I cannot count how often I have read that this and that bug will not be fixed in the current version, despite it being an LTS release. Just two recent examples, #949468 and #886327. They're both not as critical as this one, but still annoying. We are a non-profit and as such cannot afford paid support like RHEL or SuSE Enterprise. We decided to try and contribute back instead, wherever we can. I still feel comfortable with that. But sometimes I get frustrated because it seems that some people behind Ubuntu think a shiny new tablet running Ubuntu is more important than people being able to get their work done. I would be happy to help testing if you decided to go the hard way and rebuild the rdeps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to glib2.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214352 Title: [SRU] GUINT32/64_SWAP_LE_BE macros do not enclose val argument in parentheses To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1214352/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1214352] Re: GUINT32/64_SWAP_LE_BE macros do not enclose val argument in parentheses
I can finally confirm that the patch from gnome bug 695925 above actually fixes the problem with Ubuntu 12.04.4 and LO 4.2.4 from the PPA. I have applied the patch to the glib source package and rebuilt and installed it, and then rebuilt libreoffice, gtk+3.0, dbus-glib and gvfs against the patched glib. This now finally seems to work. Unfortunately, this whole rebuilding is a PITA and takes a long time, especially for libreoffice. I'm not sure if everything is needed, but anyway I have a bad feeling with this. Now there are still lots of packages on my system which were built against the unpatched glib, so I really think this needs to be fixed in Ubuntu 12.04 with *ALL* packages which depend on glib being rebuilt against a patched version. How can we achieve this? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to glib2.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214352 Title: GUINT32/64_SWAP_LE_BE macros do not enclose val argument in parentheses To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1214352/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes
Not exactly helpful for the bug report, but a hint at Erik: I have found quite a few traps in Ubuntu Software where it is assumed that the root user has access to the user's home directory, which is not the case in such an environment. Examples include usb-creator (fixed by now), pam_mount and others. This is a side effect of the Ubuntu way of allowing "normal" users to do administrative tasks via sudo. [Bug 371167] Re: Chinese file names in Zip Archives compressed on Windows cannot be extracted correctly
This bug is not quite a duplicate, at least not for 7zip. In reply to comment #7, installing p7zip-full does not fully fix the problem. It does, however, change the behaviour of file-roller. Without p7zip-full, file-roller uses unzip and cannot extract files with special characters in their name. With p7zip-full installed, it obviously uses 7z and still shows weird characters in most cases, but they can be extracted. It does also not solve the problem the other way round (opening archives on windows which were created with file-roller), but changes behaviour here too. "In most cases" means it also depends on the windows packer used. I did some cross-tests and found out really weird behaviour. Files created with Filzip work, files created with Winzip 14 or 7zip for Windows (sic!) do not. Interestingly enough, this does not work the other way round, i.e. Filzip for Windows cannot handle Archives correctly created with p7zip for Linux. Also, 7zip for Win can handle file-roller archives created with info-zip, but not those created with p7zip. 7zip for Win also cannot handle Filzip archives, but the other way round works. p7zip archives can be handled by Winzip 14, but again not the other way round. Summary: There is currently no pair of Windows<->Linux programs I know of which can handle special characters in archives created by the other program. The real blocker is file-roller not being able top open/extract those files at all, which can be solved by installing p7zip-full. All other programs can open these files, though with a cluttered filename. Anyway, this needs to be fixed with some kind of encoding detection/guessing. -- Chinese file names in Zip Archives compressed on Windows cannot be extracted correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 433944] Re: Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS
You're right, gvfs-fuse does not work with NFS homes right now, at least not with root-squashing enabled. UID 0 needs to get access to ~/.gvfs for mounting, which fails in this case. Unfortunately, the path for .gvfs cannot be easily changed. I have posted a new bug against gvfs for this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/435719). As a temporary workaround, it is possible to symlink ~/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs. I still wonder why it works with the vanilla packages, though. Does "vanilla" support native GIO/GVFS? I tried yesterday with the latest karmic packages, because the Changelog mentioned something about gvfs fuse, but it did not work either. -- Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433944 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 435719] [NEW] gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs gvfsd usually start a gvfs-fuse-daemon for GVFS mounts, which fuse- mounts to $HOME/.gvfs. This fails if the home directory resides on an NFS share with root squashing enabled. Thus, users in a corporate/networked environment with such NFS homes cannot use gvfs effectively, since a lot of applications rely on the fuse mount. For those unfamiliar with NFS, root squashing means the local UID 0 is mapped to the anonymous/nobody UID on the remote system when it tries to access the NFS share. Since home and subdirectories have permissions 0700, $HOME/.gvfs cannot be accessed by root in this case. This makes the mount() call of gvfs-fuse-daemon fail (verifiable with 'strace gvfs- fuse-daemon /home/user/.gvfs'). There are two solutions to this: a) disable root squashing b) move the .gvfs directory somewhere else a) is not a good choice for security reasons. b) seems not to be possible at the moment. I looked at the sources for the current (jaunty and karmic) gvfs package and found mount->fuse_mountpoint = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir(), ".gvfs", fs_name, NULL); in daemon/mount.c. Even though gvfs-fuse-daemon can be called with any path you like, it looks like the path which gfvsd uses for the call is hard-coded. I was able to symlink /home/user/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs, and this works. But I am not sure if that is a good solution. I would like to ask the package maintainers to a) include a README.NFS in the package which points out the problem and workaround (I can write one if you like) and b) forward this bug upstream to the right place, so the path with which gfvs-fuse-daemon gets called can be configured. ** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 433944] Re: ODT files on gvfs mounts open with file roller
I have reassigned this bug to openoffice.org since this seems to be the real cause of the problem. The OOo Ubuntu build just refuses to open files from GVFS mounts as long as the home directory resides on an NFS mount. Nautilus' behaviour to open the file with file roller instead is just a side effect. I have verified this by moving a users' home dir from NFS to local and vice versa. Opening files in OpenOffice.org from a GVFS mounted SMB share (or SFTP, doesn't matter) fails as long as the home dir is on NFS (tried with NFSv3 and NFSv4). Moving home to the local drive makes things work again. Opening local files works in every case. This is not restricted to ODT files, but happens with XLS and DOC as well. This problem seems to be specific to the Ubuntu build; I have downloaded and installed the vanilla 3.1.1 release, and it does not have the problem. The problem persists, however, in the current 3.1.1 ubuntu packages from the ppa (https://launchpad.net/~openoffice- pkgs/+archive/ppa), which I believe are identical to the karmic ones except for dependencies. This bug is not so 'low' in importance, it is in fact a showstopper for our win->linux migration. We heavily work with peer-to-peer shares of USB drives and CDs, which cannot be mounted using fstab since they're not always present. Not being able to open Office documents from these shares makes the whole migration useless :-( If we can't get this fixed for karmic, I will have to either use the "official" OOo packages or find another way to store the home dirs. ** Package changed: nautilus (Ubuntu) => openoffice.org (Ubuntu) ** Summary changed: - ODT files on gvfs mounts open with file roller + Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS -- Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433944 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 433944] Re: ODT files on gvfs mounts open with file roller
I have tried with around 30 different files, including some named abc.odt; I have made sure the other filenames do not contain anything other than 7-Bit ASCII characters. The mime type listed in the properties dialog is application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text; the tab "open with" shows "Archive Manager", "Archive Mounter" and "OpenOffice.org Word Processor", with OpenOffice being selected. Meanwhile, I guess it could be a problem with OpenOffice since it now fails to open documents from GVFS mounts even from the file open dialog. It opens a blank document "Untitled 1" instead. I think I remeber that worked some time ago, but I am not sure. Anyway, I tried using 3 different computers here at work. 2 had this symptom, one did not. [Bug 218230] Re: gtk file dialog blocks on trackerd (via dbus) for 25s for users with NFS homedirs
Reopen this bug (at least the one regarding trackerd) since it needs to be fixed in hardy (LTS Release!) as well. NFS Homes are quite common in corporate environments, as is the use of LTS releases... ** Changed in: tracker (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released => Confirmed -- gtk file dialog blocks on trackerd (via dbus) for 25s for users with NFS homedirs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gtk+2.0 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 120322] Re: Add functionality to make multiple copies of a disk
It looks like this feature is gone again in jaunty, at least I could not find it. -- Add functionality to make multiple copies of a disk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 369708] [NEW] nautilus segfaults when loading gconf dump
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Steps to reproduce (in Jaunty): open a nautilus window gconftool --dump /apps/nautilus > /tmp/nautilus.dump gconftool --load /tmp/nautilus.dump Result: Window closes, Icons of mounted drivers disappear. Entry in syslog states "nautilus: segfault at ... error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.2000.1" This is new with jaunty, it did not happen with hardy (did not try intrepid). This may be a rather special problem, but I need it for our live CD project, which allows users to store and retrieve personal settings from/to removable media. Closing nautilus with "nautilus -q" before loading the dump and starting it afterwards with "nautilus -n" helps avoid the segfault, of course. Unfortunately, the newly spawned nautilus keeps open the mountpoint of the removable drive forever, so that it cannot be unmounted anymore. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- nautilus segfaults when loading gconf dump https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369708 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 299015] Re: Seahorse tabs "Encryption" and "PGP Passphrases" missing
** Description changed: Binary package hint: seahorse On a fresh intrepid install, seahorse resp. the preferences pane does not show the tabs "Encryption" and "PGP Passphrases". Even more curious, when calling 'seahorse-preferences' from the command line, it will *only* show "Encryption" and "PGP Passphrases" but no other tab. - As a side effect, seahorse apparently does not unlock the login keyring - on login, I have to enter my password again the first time I use the - keyring. - I tried 'aptitude purge seahorse seahorse-plugins', then reinstalled after reboot, but no change. gnupg-agent ist *not* installed. -- Seahorse tabs "Encryption" and "PGP Passphrases" missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299015 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to seahorse in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
