[Bug 1969602] Re: gnome-shell with focus-mode=mouse behaves wrongly when alt-tabbing

2023-12-06 Thread Ari Pollak
This was fixed in Ubuntu 23.04, but then broke again with 23.10. The
workaround that worked for me in 22.04 was to install
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/4673/alt-tab-move-mouse/, but
that's not available for GNOME 45.

Supposedly this update to mutter fixes the issue but I haven't tested
it: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/3258

2022-12-01 Thread Ari Pollak
I'd been running into this issue on Ubuntu 22.04 with Google Chrome,
GNOME Shell under Wayland, and multiple monitors - opening Chrome will
frequently crash my whole GNOME session. I could also reliably reproduce
it once Chrome is running by moving a Chrome window to another monitor
from the GNOME activities overview. After I built & installed libmutter
42.6 (42.5 was previously installed), the problem went away.

[Bug 1933027] Re: Gdm3 with smartcard asks for login/smartcard pin even if there is no smartcard authentication enabled

2022-11-12 Thread Ari
Update: a workaround to recover the "gdm user chooser" is to avoid the
smartcard support from launching, which can be done editing this file

/etc/xdg/autostart/org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Smartcard.desktop

comment out the existing "Exec" line, and add a new one pointing to this
harmless do-nothing binary, /usr/bin/true

The chooser now works. Still wondering how is it that 22.04 was working
with no problem with my yubikey always plugged since June till November

[Bug 1933027] Re: Gdm3 with smartcard asks for login/smartcard pin even if there is no smartcard authentication enabled

2022-11-12 Thread Ari
I've been using 22.04 (fresh install) since June and today after a
routine update this "bug" popped up. This is in a system that has a
yubikey 4 permanently plugged in. It's weird that the bug just popped
out of nowhere.

The last workaround from wastrel worked great for me.

Now in addition to this bug, GDM's "face chooser" disappeared, no longer
shows up, on boot I get prompted for a username. 22.04 was supposed to
be a stable long-term release :/

[Bug 1876632] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted/missing shell textures when switching users or resuming from suspend

2022-05-09 Thread Ari
@Sebastian adding both the kernel parameter and the two lines in the
nvidia module conf file works for "systemctl suspend" - the machine can
now resume OK when on wayland.

Curiously though, when I try systemctl suspend-then-hibernate (my
default way of suspending), I get the following in dmesg:

NVRM: GPU :02:00.0: PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations module parameter
is set. System Power Management attempted without driver procfs suspend
interface. Please refer to the 'Configuring Power Management Support'
section in the driver README.

and suspend does not work (I get a login prompt)

Note that "systemctl hibernate" works fine on wayland and Xorg. Also, on xorg,
systemctl suspend-then-hibernate also works fine.
Could this be a bug on systemd?

2022-05-09 Thread Ari
Unfortunately nvidia.NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 did not work on
an old Asus Rog Maximus VIII mobo (Kabylake), nvidia 1650.

I also tried this:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1

and it didn't work either. Missing textures after suspend. Any other
hint?

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-07-11 Thread Ari
The updated package worked

20.04, GTX 1650
Driver 440.100

Monitor: 4K, 32".

This a new setup - the screen is large enough that 100% is kind of usable,
although the GUI fonts of GTK apps (gnome shell, darktable) was in general too
tiny - with the Trevino's patch I could now set the resolution to 125% but then
found that the ubuntu GUI became too large.
Ideally, I noticed that a of 110% scale or so, like my mac does on the same
screen, works best.

In case it helps anyone: if you prefer scaling at 100% but want larger
fonts in most apps

Gnome Tweaks > Fonts > Scaling Factor = 1.1
Firefox > about:config > layout.css.devPixelsPerPx = 1.1 (Preferences >
General > Zoom > Default: 100%)
Terminal / Tilix > Fonts > Inconsolata 14px

[Bug 1631560] Re: Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-16 Thread Ari Torhamo
@ Sebastian Bacher: I found an existing bug report about this problem at Gnome
Bugzilla, and I added my comment to it:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=745968
The report and the latest comment are a year and a half old, but the bug is
marked as new. I guess it's better not to expect a quick patch.

@ dino99: Thanks for the workaround, dino99. It alleviated the problem
somewhat. It would help more if I'd decrease the font size further, but
the text would get too small then.

[Bug 1631560] [NEW] Narrow spacing of icons in Files affects file names

2016-10-07 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

When I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.10 beta a few days ago, horizontal distance
between icons in Files and on the desktop got much smaller. Because of
this there's less room horizontally for the file names, and many words
got their last letters cut off to the next row. In many file names full
rows now alternate with rows of only a couple of cut off letters. Name
fields with longer file names also look disproportionately narrow and
tall now. I think the spacing should be changed back to what it was, or
at least it should be user selectable.

[Bug 1205055] [NEW] Impossible to change column width of Nautilus in list view

2013-07-25 Thread Ari Passopolis
Public bug reported:

In Gnome Nautilus 3.8.2 under kernel 3.8.0-26-generic (64-bit), using
the mouse to change column width is unavailing. It's as if these widths
are hard coded. This seems to be a reversion, since the problem has been
reported by various people ever since 2007. Now, 6 years later, the bug
remains unswatted. This sort of thing is an embarrassment to Ubuntu. Can

[Bug 861064] Re: mbox account needs better initial settings

2011-10-23 Thread Ari Torhamo
It seems that I might be suffering from the same problem. After
upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10, the only account visible in Evolution is
me@localhost, when it should be me@gmail.com. The old messages were
imported to this localhost account during the upgrade, but I'm not able
to receive any messages any more. Everything seems normal in the
Evolution settings. I don't know if it's related, but Evolution has two
items in default applications selection. Selecting one or the other
doesn't seem to affect anything though.

I wouldn't mind getting some help to solve this problem, as currently I
have to send and read email through Gmail web interface, which I find
very unpleasant to use. So, how do I get my me@gmail account back,
visible and working again? Thanks.

[Bug 841315] [NEW] on thinkpad-acpi devices, brightness setting ommits most steps

2011-09-04 Thread ari
Public bug reported:

Brightness changes in very rough steps on some Machines, but only when
there is the gpm-OSD appearing showing the brightness setting. So the
bug appears not when the session showed is locked, but in an active
session or on the login screen the bug appears.

On my machine (thinkpad X60) brightness changes with two steps between
min and max - these steps are different depending on wether you go up or
down hough. So you can hit 6 settings. I think the firmware is capable I
think 8, surely indepent on wether set higher or lower.

This is found on an X60 Tablet, an Lenovo Netbook (sorry, not sure which
device exactly) and an X201 Tablet. This leads me to believe this is an
issue with the thinkpad-acpi kernel module, which has an proprietary
interface for the screen brightness.

[Bug 334125] Re: Search not showing hidden files

2011-06-11 Thread Ari Torhamo
I just spent quite a lot of time searching for my .evolution folder (it
has changed place in Ubuntu 11.04) with Nautilus search. I searched for
nautilus, .nautilus, mail, mbox etc. until I moved to Google,
wondering where else the .evolution folder could be than in my home
floder. A half an hour later I found out that Nautilus search can't see
hidden files. Then I read that the bug has been open for over four
years. Aaaarghhh.

Later I remembered that I have faced this bug before, but I had
forgotten it. I wonder if I'm going to forget it again, and after a few
years desperately searching for some hidden file that I know should be
there...

Sorry for the unhelpful message.

[Bug 365140] Re: Evolution displays folder as unread even though all mail in it is read

2010-11-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm experiencing this all the time now. When I move a read message from
my inbox to another folder, this other folder begins to show one unread
message. When I open the folder, all the messages are shown as read (the
subject lines are not shown with bold font). When I do mark as read,
nothing changes, but when I first mark the message as unread and then
read, then the folder stops showing unread messages.

I just noticed, that the problem doesn't affect every message, but I
don't know yet what makes some messages affected and some not. I'll try
to figure that out

I have faced this problem a few times during the recent years with
Evolution, but for the couple of last days it's been happening more than
on those previous times.

2010-10-19 Thread Ari Torhamo
Gedit is what I used to open %gconf.xml. I tried Less too (now), but it
didn't find any more information.

Gconf-editor shows a list of value names and values (21):

- accounts key has no value (there's a small square where the value should be)
- default_account key shows a string of numbers and my machine name
- save_dir key refers to a hard disk that I removed two months ago
- signatures key says signature name=Created automatically [my
translation from Finnish] followed by a string of numbers and my machine name
- other values don't seem to have any obvious connection to me or my system

[Bug 662869] [NEW] Evolution starts as if it was the first time (with settings wizard)

2010-10-18 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I start Evolution, it behaves as if it was the first time, and
presents the settings wizard, although I've been using the program for a
long time now. When I start Evolution from the command line, the message
EI: MAIL PREFS is shown. Update: When I started a new Ubuntu session,
and changed the language from Finnish to English, the command line
showed the following, more verbose message:

** (evolution:2545): CRITICAL **: categories_icon_theme_hack: assertion
`filename != NULL  *filename != '\0'' failed
EI: MAIL PREFS

I can't tell if there's anything missing from the .evolution folder, but
at least my messages seem to be there, and also the config folder with a
bunch of configuration files.

I'm using Ubuntu version 10.10 (64-bit), to which I upgraded from 10.04
about a week before the problem came up. Evolution version number is
2.30.3-1ubuntu7. File system check says everything's OK.

Somewhere around when this happened I temporarily run out of disk space,
but took care of that almost immediately. I'm not sure about timing, so
there may have been plenty of time between these two incidents.

Bug #327503 has similar symptoms, but probably different origin.

[Bug 582903] Re: nautilus search doesn't work as described in help

2010-07-03 Thread Ari Torhamo
Yes, I can confirm what Pedro says, but I'm not quite happy. You see,
after installing Tracker I now get often hundreds of search results for
a simple search in Nautilus, when I for example search for a single file
using some character string on it's name. I may know that there's only
one file with that specific string in it's name, but unfortunately the
string often exists inside quite a many of the tens of thousands of
documents in my home folder. The apparent reason for this bahaviour is
that after installing Tracker Nautilus is using it for searching.

There seems to be no way in Nautilus to change how the search is done.
You can tell Tracker not to index contents of the files at all, but you
can't choose to search for file contents only when you need to.

Although not high priority, the error in the Nautilus help shouldn't be
difficult to fix.

[Bug 118800] Re: Passwords should not be required when creating accounts

2009-11-16 Thread Ari
In a shared family computer where the PC automatically logins a random user,
this feature in empathy is useless, and actually puts your passwords at
risks. It is quite curious that empathy does not allow configuring accounts in
such a way that it asks for the password everytime it connects, if the user so
wishes.
I'm hoping at some point the app will mature and add this functionality

[Bug 137527] Re: Totem should notify users about installing libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 to read encrypted DVD

2009-11-01 Thread Ari Torhamo
I have to say I'm astonished that in 9.10, the eleventh version of
Ubuntu, when a user tries to play a movie DVD, he's greeted with Error
occured, unable to read from the resource, instead of at least being
given a pointer to the right help page. (The wrong help page would be
the Totem movie player manual, which is the first result you get (in
Karmic) when you search with the word dvd in the Help). The right
result, Music, videos and photos, comes up seventh). I appreciate the
difficulty to create a seamless user experience with media and codecs
(on which a lot of great work has been done already), but at least we
should lead the user forward to the next step. The further goal should
be for example to let the user click a couple of OKs, be warned of
possible legal aspects with understandable language and have the
necessary codecs and other packages installed automatically.

[Bug 454107] [NEW] [Karmic] Unable to format new unformatted Corsair 16 GB USB drive

2009-10-17 Thread Ari Torhamo
Public bug reported:

I tried to format a new unformated Corsair Flash Voyager 16 GB USB drive
in Ubuntu Karmic beta with Palimpsest Disk Utility (gnome-disk-utility),
but the tool wasn't able to handle the task. Palimpsest saw the drive
space as unallocated, except 1 kb (if I remember the size right), which
was shown as unknown partition. When I tried to format the unallocated
space, I got the following error message:

After several attempts I tried to format the drive in Windows 7 to FAT32
(to know if the drive is faulty), which went fine. Windows' formatting
tool saw the whole drive as unallocated (no 1 kb unknown partition).
After this, Karmic was able to reformat the drive to ext4.

This happened a week ago, and I have updated my system since then
(attached system information may not be completely relevant). The system
was up to date when the problem occurred.

[Bug 366963] [NEW] nautilus open with property no longer available for folders

2009-04-25 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After upgrading to ubuntu 9.04 (amd64), nautilus open with property is
no longer available for folders.

How to reproduce:
- open a nautilus window
- right click on any folder icon and choose properties
- observe that there is no longer a tab called Open With

All previous ubuntu versions had this property tab so I think this is a
bug.

I need the Open With property tab to be able to delete entries in
Nautilus' Open With context menu.

For example, I use nautilus' context menu to open (associate) a media
folder with my music player (audacious), so that the player plays all
the music files in that folder. Similarly with photograph folders and so
on.

With Jaunty, there is no way I can find to remove any of the Open With
entries in nautilus context menu for Folders. Note that the Open With
property tab still works fine for regular files; the only problem now is
with folders.

Please give us back the Open With property for folders!

[Bug 366963] Re: nautilus open with property no longer available for folders

2009-04-25 Thread Ari
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

After upgrading to ubuntu 9.04 (amd64), nautilus open with property is
  no longer available for folders.

  How to reproduce:
  - open a nautilus window
  - right click on any folder icon and choose properties
  - observe that there is no longer a tab called Open With

All previous ubuntu versions had this property tab so I think this is a
  bug.

I need the Open With property tab to be able to delete entries in
  Nautilus' Open With context menu.

- For example, I use nautilus' context menu to open a media folder with my
- music player (audacious), so that the player plays all the music files
- in that folder. Similarly with photograph folders and so on.
+ For example, I use nautilus' context menu to open (associate) a media
+ folder with my music player (audacious), so that the player plays all
+ the music files in that folder. Similarly with photograph folders and so
+ on.

With Jaunty, there is no way I can find to remove any of the Open With
entries in nautilus context menu for Folders. Note that the Open With
property tab still works fine for regular files; the only problem now is
  with folders.

Please give us back the Open With property for folders!

[Bug 238179] Re: Scrolling in CompactView doesn't work

2008-11-16 Thread Ari
There's a brainstorm idea that requests exactly this.

I also like scroll view - specially for browsing music collections. But
without the ability to scroll with the mouse wheel, its usability is
rather poor.

[Bug 253110] Re: middle-click a pathbar button to open a new tab

I can confirm this bug. I've compiled alsa from sources and I would
change the path of alsa. So I delete folders of alsa and now I have
alsa-lib-1.0.16rc2 in trash lol and I can't delete it. Click right
button mouse on trash applet @gnome panel and pick 'Clean Trash' (in
polish is Opróżnij kosz). The files which I haven't got permission
can't be deleted, but any message doesn't inform me about it.

[Bug 212946] [NEW] Mouse wheel zoom in/out not working

2008-04-06 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

gThumb 2.10.x reportedly restored the zoom in/out behaviour controlled
by the mouse wheel.

Ubuntu Hardy version of it (as of today) still implements the old
annoying mouse wheel behaviour (Next/Previous picture controlled by the
wheel) that was changed in 2.10 due to massive user complaints.

This is a request for the ubuntu gthumb package to do zoom in/out by
default, as intended by the application devs.

Below are the release notes for gthumb 2.10 where the new behavior is
stated (the highlighting is mine)

___

Version 2.10 is now available at:

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gthumb/2.10/

* gthumb-2.10.8.tar.gz
* gthumb-2.10.8.tar.bz2

This is a major new release, with new features not available in the 2.8
series. The following is the list of the major new features of the 2.10
series:

* Added support for displaying remote locations.
* Added red-eye removal tool.
* Added a filter bar, to limit displayed images.
* Added thumbnailing and player-launching for videos and audio files.
* Added programmable hotkeys.
* Added the ability to manually specify photo print sizes.
* Added a zoom-to-width mode.
* Added sort by comment and sort by Exif DateTime tag.
* Adds support for multiple auto-detected cameras, or multiple modes for
single cameras.
* Enhancements to the crop dialog: added undo/redo support; allow to crop
multiple times without exiting the dialog; allow to switch on/off the selection
mask;

/
zoom in/out with mouse wheel;

zoom keeping the center of the image visible.
* Allows file extension to be changed when bulk-renaming.
* Added reset Exif orientation tag tool.
* New re-size options in web exporter to allow equal landscape and portrait
image sizes.

For a detailed list of the new features and bugfixes see here.

Thanks to all contributors:

* Michael J. Chudobiak
* Manuel Braga
* Jef Driesen
* Rennie deGraaf

[Bug 206097] [NEW] [Hardy] System freeze during shutdown with an empty screen with gnome's background image

2008-03-24 Thread Ari
Public bug reported:

Hardy Beta clean install.

System freezes during shutdown, after closing all applications and the
panel, it leaves me with an empty screen with gnome's background image
and stays there forever.

If I kill X (ctrl-alt-backspace) then shutdown proceeds and terminates.

Also if I shutdown from a console (ctrl-alt-f2, shutdown -h now) it
works.

The problem is reproducible 100% of the time. It has been happening
since my initial Beta install, and the daily updates have not fixed it.

This is with Hardy _AMD64, NVIDIA 8600 with nvidia-glx-new and compiz,
setup using Desktop effects with no extra tweakings.

Not really sure if this is a gnome problem or an X problem.

it appears the same issue is the cause of the following weirdness:

Quite confusing for people coming from Windows (and for me as well! :)

[Bug 204826] Re: Hardy - After rIght click on folders and opening with application, the selected app is not remembered

2008-03-22 Thread Ari
Just confirmed: the problem is specific to the Folder type. Regular
files do not have this problem.

I think the difference haso do with the fact that folders always at
least one Open With action (if you right click on a folder
Properties Open With, you can see it, it's Open Folder) and this
default action does not change, double clicking in a folder always opens
the folder.
