Ok, I think I found what the problem was. I tried to see if I would have
the same problem in Hardy. So I added the applet in the panel and I got
the nice dialog attached. So in my main ubuntu installation I probably
forgot about this dialog or missed it somehow. When I went and enabled
auto
I'm not using desktop effects. My gusty also was clean installed, if it
makes any difference.
A correction on my previous post: The textbox is NOT grayed out I first
though. It just can't get the focus, so that I can start typing in it.

Address Book Search applet does not work
I cannot write in the applet. The applet textfield is grayed out, as if
it is deactivated.

@ Simos Xenitellis
The themes from GNOME seem to use the alias Sans (I check with gdm-2.17.6) .
Its just the edgy/feisty gdm theme that doesn't use the alias but uses
Bitstream Vera Sans Bold instead.
Replaces Bitstream Vera Sans with Sans.

The bug persists in Ubuntu 6.10 as well . I tried it with evolution
2.8.1-0ubuntu4 and the behavior is the same with what is described
above.
Additionally now, when right clicking an English misspelled word (with
