I second the race condition, since the problem doesn't always appear.
Sometimes after booting (minority of cases), the user list is shown
normally.
P.S.: Workaround: No need to install xdm. Just log into a VT and enter
startx.

Opening gnome-power-statistics, two AC adapters and two batteries are
displayed even though I only have one each. The contained information
(e.g. battery serial number) is the same for both, though.

This irritate me too. I dont care I run gedit. I use the Ubuntu
desktop Text Editor.
It is small issues like this that make Ubuntu look bad to new users, and
to veteran users also in some cases :-)

Perhaps the issue can be isolated to libxklavier15, but haven't
confirmation about the second workaround which implies that
libxklavier15 is to blame.

NoMachine NX remote sessions doesn't get correct theme
When did Ubuntu change this? I remember for sure that a few releases
ago, turning off the backlight using the notebook's blank screen or
lock screen (you know, the screen icon with the X ;) ) button worked.

thanks for the workaround.
However, I would like to suggest that the groups are checked for
existance instead of an hardcoded check for admin since it would be an
similiar problem if someone would add a user named scanner, pulse,
gdm syslog or any other name that is equal to an
