The problem seems to be related to fglrx. Xorg complained that this file could not be found. I removed gdm and reinstalled it. The allowed me to get into the desktop, although the resolution was low. I installed all available updates and rebooted and things look fine now. In addition, I noticed that the update reset my software sources. I enabled the restricted sources, which may have allowed my ATI driver to get picked up, which I think is why I have graphics working now. So, I don't understand everything that happened, but I am working now. But, I think that there may be a bug in the upgrade relating to restricted drivers for video cards. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm After upgrading I cannot get into graphical mode. Could be this: gdm[5153]: CRITICAL: gdm_config_value_get_bool: assertion `value-type == GDM_CONFIG_VALUE_BOOL' failed Here is where it gives up, I think: gdm[5153]: WARNING: Failed to start X server several times in a short time period; disabling display :0 So the terminal works. I can log in, etc. There was a window for debugging X server, but I don't know what I am doing. I installed a old version on another partition to get here. Obviously, there is some problem with the upgrade. Granted, if I know more I may be able to fix the gdm problem...but I don't.
