[Bug 1411978] [NEW] package udev 208-8ubuntu8.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2015-01-17 Thread Kevin Cole
Public bug reported:

I don't have further details, other than this possibly being an artifact
of attempting to switch to systemd about a month ago, and an attempt to
switch back to upstart about a week ago. While I'm sure that's the
problem with a few other packages, today was the first time I saw udev
complain during a dist-upgrade.

[Bug 1397516] Re: evince only prints blank pages

2014-11-30 Thread James Cole
This affects me as well with most PDFs, except for the test.pdf I just
attached (that I created with print to file from gedit).

If I print to file and choose PDF, the new document looks fine as well
(but still won't print)

If I print to file and choose PS, the new document is blank.

There is a workaround that works for me: Select preview instead of print from
the print dialog, from the print preview window, click the printer icon (though
if you have multiple printers, that probably won't select the correct one).

Just for clarity, all my comments about not working examples are in reference
to normal PDFs such as the kalendar pdf in the OP...
The test.pdf I attached is the only working pdf I've found.

[Bug 888789] Re: evince doesn't render embedded font

2013-04-06 Thread Kevin Cole
With my document (a tax document I'd rather not share), evince fails to
render the text, showing various odd lines, shadings, etc. in place of
the text. I *think* xpdf renders it correctly for about 3 seconds, and
then crashes. For the few seconds I see it, it appears correct. Adobe
Acrobat Reader (acroread) has no problem with it on a 32-bit system, but
I really don't want to clutter my 64-bit system with all of the 32-bit
libraries for a single application.

[Bug 904032] Re: gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing

2011-12-14 Thread Vernon Cole
Yes, I ended up using lp to obtain a printout. I don't want to have
to teach people how to do that. The point of having a GUI system is not
having to use the command line. Gedit is the tool that opens when I
click on a .txt file. Printing should be a one step operation after
that. We're supposed to be making it easy for them (the command line
challenged).

The report has been forwarded to Gnome, and a link established. Thanks
for your help! The link and how-to were perfect.

[Bug 904032] [NEW] gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing

2011-12-13 Thread Vernon Cole
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to use gedit to spool the printout from a legacy program to an
ink jet printer.
The file is in ASCII, with a form feed character defining each page.
Gedit displays the form feed as a box with the hexadecimal value 000C in it.
This is all good.

When I select print from the gedit menu, it sends the text to the printer
neatly formatted with
a header and page numbering of its own.
This is also acceptable.

When the legacy program created the text, it determined that additional
information should appear
an a new form, so it wanted to eject the nearly full form, and begin the next
block of information
beneath a new header. It emitted a form feed to produce that effect.

Gedit happily creates a graphic box with 000C in it, prints the box, and
proceeds to print the legacy
header (which says page 2 on it) on the bottom of page One. When it runs out
of paper, it
prints its Page 2 header, continues to print the legacy second page, a 000C
box, and the header for
the legacy page 3 and part of page three until it runs out of paper again,
and so forth.

Unicode 000C is defined as a white space control character, as are carriage
return and line feed.
You don't print them, you obey them. Do the same for form feed. Be kind to
old programs and old
programmers. If my C program contains a printf statement with a \f in it,
give me a new sheet
of paper on the printout. That way your page 2 will also be my page 2 and the
printout will appear
pretty much like the programmer (myself in a previous millennium) intended.

[Bug 884933] [NEW] eds keeps prompting me for calendar passwords

2011-11-01 Thread Tim Cole
Public bug reported:

EDS keeps popping up dialogs asking me for passwords for my Google
calendars, even though I checked remember password, and the actual
password appears to be filled in. I checked via wireshark and I'm not
experiencing any authentication failures either, so there's absolutely
no reason to keep asking me. This is driving me crazy because the
dialogs are popping up in clusters every few minutes, and there's
nothing I can do to make them stop popping up.

[Bug 647373] [NEW] overwidth utf-8 characters should be given double space by default

2010-09-25 Thread Vernon Cole
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
GNOME Terminal 2.30.2
attached screen shot uses default system fixed font, but same effect also
appears when using Monospace 12.

Unicode characters which have glyphs wider than the spacing overprint
each other, making an unreadable display. Since a square box with a hex
point number inside it is the representation for any character which is
not defined in the font, and the box is itself a double-width glyph, you
cannot read the contents of the box to see what you did wrong.

VTE should detect this condition and automatically treat such characters
as double-width, similar to the way wide oriental characters are
displayed.

Attached will be a screen shot generated by the Python script, below .

code
for ij in range(0x2160,0x2189):
   j = unichr(ij)
   try:
 print j, unicodedate.name(j) ,unicodedata.numeric(j)

[Bug 188422] Re: locations list can go over the screen border

2010-01-05 Thread Kevin Cole
Still present in Karmic (Clock 2.28.0). Peter Cherriman's observation
above is the same diagnosis I was about to make. Is it possible to
determine where on the panel the applet is located, and then expand in
the appropriate direction based on that? (i.e. if it's on the far right,
move the left edge further left rather than the right edge further
right?)

[Bug 400966] Re: gnome terminal should highlight user entered text for easy parsing

2009-07-29 Thread Tim Cole
This seems clear-cut enough; the request is effectively for VteTerminal
to show echoed input in a different style from text written to the ptty.
This would require some changes to VteTerminal in libvte, and some
changes to gnome-terminal to add corresponding preferences.

[Bug 294865] Re: dragging a .iso onto a blank CD should suggest burning the iso directly to the disk

2008-11-06 Thread Tim Cole
Perhaps the specific behavior which is wanted is to prompt if the user
tries to put a disk image file in an otherwise blank CD?

It is probably also necessary to define the desired behavior in the case
where the user has already added files or directories to the CD.

[Bug 203388] [NEW] hardware volume control doesn't work

2008-03-17 Thread Chris Cole
Public bug reported:

Hardy development (3/17/08) version and my hardware volume control

[Bug 83154] Re: ms-tnef attachment not readable

2007-03-22 Thread James Cole
I got winmail.dat integration working by following the instructions
here: http://www.go-evolution.org/Tnef

Had to fiddle with the configure file a little, but got it working.
Install the evolution-dev package, libytnef0, and libytnef-dev and then compile.

I'm attaching a deb built against Evolution 2.10 in feisty.

Anyone think we can get this included at least in evolution-plugins-
experimental?

This is a dire feature for those using Evolution at work and having to
deal with people using Outlook.

[Bug 36068] Window can't be resized if title-bar is above panel

2006-03-22 Thread Vernon Cole
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36068

Comment:
This is a serious problem when using older (low resolution) displays. Often the
initial presentation of a fixed-size window will have the control buttons both
above and below the screen, so that there is no way to either re-size or exit
the window.
For example try System - Preferences - Sound on Dapper with 800 x 600
resolution. Many of us older folks prefer to run at low resolutions to help
our bleary eyes. The system should adapt.
