[Bug 1551686] Re: browser leaks old location data to web pages

2016-03-08 Thread David Barth
To summarize the analysis and the plan forward, we have identified a
series of fixes and improvements to various parts of the stack:

Oxide: the ubuntu-specific provider code or related logic could filter
out obvious bogus values returned by the location-service which do not
meet the maximumAge filter

Location-service: the service API could be extended to support a
maximumAge filter parameter

Location-service: in the absence of a maximumAge parameter, the accuracy
could be reduced depending on the cached location age; that would help
app decide whether to ask for a better location if needed.

[Bug 1551686] Re: browser leaks old location data to web pages

2016-03-04 Thread David Barth
Oxide is normally also pulling updates once permission has been granted:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~oxide-
developers/oxide/oxide.trunk/view/head:/qt/core/browser/oxide_qt_location_provider.cc#L352

Looking at that part, do you see something that would be at odds with
the logic in the other layers of the location stack ?

[Bug 1387734] [NEW] Location service uses the cached authorization, even if the user denied location access to an app

2014-10-30 Thread David Barth
Public bug reported:

The bug occurs after removing location access authorization to an
application. The location is still available to the application, despite
the user having revoked access from within USS Privacy Location.

To reproduce:

1. Open a map application, like Here map
2. Allow access to location
3. Switch to System Settings Privacy Location
4. Disable location access for Maps
5. Kill Here map, and restart it

What should happen: you should not have access anymore (and should not see a
prompt)
What happens instead: the app still has access to your location, as shown in
the logs:

I1030 16:15:38.167752 3100 cached_agent_glog_reporter.cpp:32]
CachedAgent::authenticate_request_with_parameters: Application pid:
27975 Application uid: 32011 Application id: com.nokia.heremaps_here
Cached request: Request(from: com.nokia.heremaps_here, feature: 0,
when: 1414682114882519283, answer: granted)

I confirmed that the trust store had recorded the authorization change
as in:

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ sqlite3 ~/.local/share/UbuntuLocationService/trust.db
select * from requests
1|unconfined|0|1414098093331252474|1

Re: [Bug 1374577] Re: 'unconfined' should be precached and not listed under 'Location access' (or 'Other app access')

2014-09-29 Thread David Barth
Indeed, the Location plugin in System settings does /hide/ unconfined
entries, because:
1. there is no way to get back to the actual application desktop file to
display its name and icon: we just know that an undefined unconfined
application was granted access
2. in theory unconfined applications can bypass the location service to
obtain the information they want; so an on/off toggle would give a false
sense of control

On Fri, Sep 26, 2014 at 11:09 PM, Jamie Strandboge ja...@ubuntu.com wrote:

Ok, I was wrong, after reseting the db, I can see that while the
location service does incorrectly prompt, system settings does not show
it. This is somewhat worse than I thought because if you choose the
wrong thing with the location trust store, you cannot undo it (without
resetting the db). Marking system settings task as invalid.

 ** Changed in: ubuntu-system-settings (Ubuntu)
Status: Confirmed = Invalid

 ** Summary changed:

 - 'unconfined' should be precached and not listed under 'Location access'
 (or 'Other app access')
+ 'unconfined' should be precached for trusted helpers

 ** Changed in: location-service (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided = Critical

 ** Description changed:

 - If I go to Location access under Security Privacy, I have an entry in
 - the list that is blank which corresponds to 'unconfined' ('unconfined'
 - should be precached to default to 'allow' anyway).
 -
We should not prompt the user for unconfined or allow the user to adjust
entries for 'unconfined' processes in System Settings since this might
break things in unexpected ways. Marking as Critical and for rtm14
because this is user facing, confusing to have a blank entry, can lead
 - to unexpected behavior, it should be trivial to filter this out in
 - system settings and because it should be easy to precache this.
+ to unexpected behavior, and because it should be easy to precache this.

Steps to reproduce (this resets the location trust-store db):
   1. $ stop ubuntu-location-service-trust-stored
   2. mv ~/.local/share/UbuntuLocationService/trust.db
 ~/.local/share/UbuntuLocationService/trust.db.bak
   3. $ start ubuntu-location-service-trust-stored
   4. launch webbrowser-app (it is unconfined)
   5. navigate to maps.google.com. it will prompt to access location
 (browser prompt). Say yes

At this point I am presented with a trust session prompt:
   unconfined

An unconfined application wants to access your current location.

   Deny

   Allow

   6. tap 'Allow'

This adds the following to the trust store:
   3|unconfined|0|1411758762544069109|1

location service shouldn't be prompting for this for the reasons
   outlined above. Adding location-service task.

This will likely affect camera and mic in 'Other app access'.

[Bug 1374577] Re: 'unconfined' should be precached and not listed under 'Location access' (or 'Other app access')

2014-09-26 Thread David Barth
It could be historical indeed. To verify, you could remove the Trust.db
file and re-authorize each of your applications using Location to see if
one of them still re-creates the unconfined entry.

However, being unconfined it should have been filtered out anyway. so
I'll mark the bug confirmed for now.

Re: [Bug 1029289] Re: Need to authorize my google account each time I boot the computer

2014-09-08 Thread David Barth
@Ruben: for an LTS the process requires that things be fixed upstream first
(evolution 14.10 in that case) and then backported to the stable release.
This is to avoid fixes not being carried over because they applied to an
older release.

[Bug 1304798] Re: Unable to access Facebook online account

2014-04-09 Thread David Barth
Our central Facebook API key has been revoked.

The impact is that Ubuntu users cannot use the Facebook integration
anymore, ie post messages or photos from applications using our central
key: Empathy, the Photo scope, the Friends app and Shotwell to a lesser
extent.

All releases (14.04, 12.10+) are impacted.

Users can still use Facebook normally in the browser. The Facebook
webapp is not affected either.

Here is the plan we have defined and are executing right now:

 * IS to register new API keys [DONE]
 * Alberto is reviewing the registration process to assist IS during this [DONE]
 * Alberto to MP a branch with the new keys in account-plugin-facebook [DONE]
 * Silo landing and upload to 14.04 asap [INPROGRESS]
 * Backport of the new key to supported releases as an SRU [TODO]

2011-08-19 Thread David Barth
So that bug and bug 808918 seem to indicate that this is not a problem
in either u2d, u3d or bamf, but more a regression in gedit. It was
working in natty, and the part of the code that starts applications
didn't change in that regard. Besides the anomaly is limited to gedit

[Bug 740864] Re: Find result is too light gray

2011-04-22 Thread David Barth
Let me try to clarify and help find the right plan of action:
1. the release is closed now
2. it can't go as a 0day-sru, because we would have to have a clear definition
of what to put in, and a clear test plan, and do that for the next week before
the release; i don't see that happen right now
3. so it's an SRU, a normal one, with a complete change description, a test
plan, test packages, etc.

I invite you to continue commenting on the bug to provide that
information.

In terms of scope for the change, being an SRU it can only fix real
problems, so: reverting to gray to make sure unfocused windows are not
mistakenly taken for focused ones, and cimi's changes to make sure the
scrollbar is still usable.

[Bug 730740] Re: FFE: Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature

2011-03-30 Thread David Barth
Additional information for the record.

The feature is currently enabled by default, with the applications
listed at: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ayatana-scrollbar-team/ayatana-
scrollbar/trunk/view/head:/os/os-utils.c#L57 It is based on the
application compatibility list captured at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ayatana/ScrollBars#Application Compatibility
based on user feedback.

An apport hook has also been provided (https://bugs.launchpad.net
/ayatana-scrollbar/+bug/740278) to tag bug reports generated by systems
where the ayatana-scrollbars are installed.

The GTK patch has been reworked to use an ubuntu_* prefix to better
differentiate the code.

[Bug 730740] Re: Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature

2011-03-23 Thread David Barth
Hereby requesting a review of the FFE request.

The gtk support patch is up for review at: https://bugs.launchpad.net
/ayatana-scrollbar/+bug/740276 (see comment #2) along with an updated
branch supporting whitelist, blacklist, and environment variable to
control when the feature should be active.

A public testing campaign was run during the past weeks, with
application compatibility results captured at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ayatana/ScrollBars

The code for the feature and the gtk patch have been code reviewed per
our standard development practices.

A very significant performance improvement was also made recently that
suppresses slow downs noticed on particular apps (evolution for
example). See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-scrollbar/+bug/728418

[Bug 730740] Re: FFE: Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature

2011-03-23 Thread David Barth
It works on more than a fixed set of applications: the whitelist is
meant to enable it by default, for a set of applications that we are
testing more thoroughly. It should work for all gtk applications using
gtk_scrolled_window, ie most of the gnome applications we know of.

The missing LTR support is because we want to test that fully as well.
It should work reasonnably with LTR languages, but not with the level of
visual quality we aim for.

[Bug 730740] Re: Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature

2011-03-08 Thread David Barth
The main resource (Cimi) can't really help with the rest of the unity
issues. Cimi is dedicated to toolkit, theme and theme engine
improvements for Natty.

I understand however that bugs triggered by this optional module should
not impact the rest of the release. So we could update the gtk apport
hook to add an 'overlay-scrollbar' tag to issues reported on
applications where the LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR env. variable was set. And
put those outside of the release showstoppers list.

[Bug 730740] [NEW] Provide support for dynamically loading the new overlay scrollbar feature

2011-03-07 Thread David Barth
Public bug reported:

The https://launchpad.net/ayatana-scrollbar project provides an
alternative scrollbar for GTK applications, to optimize for screen real-
estate.

The feature requires a patch to GTK+2.0 to optionally load the
replacement scrollbars.

This bug captures the request to integrate this patch and simplify the
installation and use of the feature for users wishing to use it on stock
Natty.

The scope of the request is for the inclusion of the GTK patch, not for
the overlay scrollbar which remains as a loadable module.

The patch is up for review at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ayatana-

Proposing to add a gconf key (at least) to be able to hide the indicator
even if multiple layouts are installed/registered. That should bring us
closer to mpt's design

And in a second step (if time still permits) adding the corresponding

[Bug 432598] Re: Do not show suspend/hiberate related UI if suspend is disabled in polkit

2010-03-10 Thread David Barth
Linking to the upstream project to get it under the end of cycle radar.
The distinction between HW support PK policy should help find a
solution.

[Bug 313228] Re: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway

2009-11-25 Thread David Barth
I don't see why it's related to the session menu. gnome-session is
managing that part, and I don't think the way we're managing session
shutdown calls can help resolve that issue. Intrinsically, the menu
shouldn't have to care about that.
