[Bug 684146] [NEW] Please make selected items look like in other Gnome apps

2010-12-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Most Gnome apps (for example EOG and Evince) show selected items in the
same way, represented as shown in the attached screenshot.

Nautilus is the one that shows them differently, a way that in my
opinion is not as aesthetically pleasant as the default. So, for visual
consistency and in order to improve the looks of Nautilus, I would like
it to start using the default look for selected items.

[Bug 669874] [NEW] Use the CTRL / SHIFT keys to do a wallpaper slideshow

2010-11-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Gnome-appearance-properties obviously can perform beautiful wallpaper
slideshows, but it's hard for the user to take advantage of that nice
feature, often having to resort to third-party solutions
(http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/07/crebs-slideshow-generator-gets-new-
features-but-requires-a-little-something-in-return%E2%80%A6/).

It would be easy and convenient to let the user press the shift or ctrl
keys in order to select several background images, which would then be
presented in a slideshow. Additionally, an extra button could be used to
let him / her save the selection as a slideshow.

[Bug 361370] Re: Link isn't created

2009-11-19 Thread David Prieto
I might have just discovered something relevant.

As you know, when you change a note's title the text in links pointing
to it change. If I have the sentence Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]Declaration of Independence[/L], where the text between
[L][/L] points to another note:

1 - If I change the note's title to the Declaration of Independence,
the original sentence would change too: Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L], where an additional
the has been added.

2 - If instead I remove the word American, the link disappears:
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

3 - However, if I remove the word American AND then I change the
note's title to the Declaration of Independence, the original sentence
reads: Thomas Jefferson wrote [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]

That is: instead of adding an additional the, Tomboy recognises the
article that was already there and adds it to the link. I am pretty sure
that this article recognition is probably intentional, but related to
the described problem.

[Bug 400903] [NEW] Show apps tab by default

2009-07-17 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Ubuntu's new sound preferences dialogue has four tabs: sound effects,
input, output and apps.

Apps is used to set the volume of individual apps, and one would expect
it to be the one the user would want to reach more often. Yet, it's
placed in the last place.

I think that, in order to make it more easily discoverable, it should be
placed first and appear as soon as the user opens the dialogue.

[Bug 396648] [NEW] fade-in effect between gdm background and user background

2009-07-07 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Since Jaunty, ubuntu uses a fade-in effect when you change the
background. This nice effect kind of goes to waste though, since the
user does not change the background very often.

There IS a guaranteed background change every session, though: the one
that happens between the login screen and the session. But that one
guaranteed change is the one where there is no fade-in effect, and it's
a shame because it would made a beautiful, seamless login.

Would it be technically possible to have the effect there?

[Bug 351025] Re: If video is too large, resize to 1/2 size

2009-06-12 Thread David Prieto
Sorry Sebastien, I didn't notice you needed information.

Yes, I still get it in Jaunty. To trigger it, activate the auto resize
option and open a video with a greater resolution than that of your
screen. Totem's window will fail to resize, and will keep the previous
size and aspect (including two black borders).

It should resize to 1/2 the original video's size instead: at least the
window would have the right proportions then.

[Bug 367202] Re: File → recent enqueues in stead of opening

2009-04-26 Thread David Prieto
Yes, it is.

-Open file A in totem.
-Use Totem's File → Recent menu to open file B.
-B opens, but A is still in the play list.
-If you open file C from the File → Recent menu, files A and B stay in the play
list.

[Bug 216644] Re: set wallpaper via middle click from nautilus does not scale image

2009-04-18 Thread David Prieto
Sebastien, I was about to file the same bug. I think I can give the
requested details.

-When you set a wallpaper, you usually also set the style (tiled, zoom,
centered, scaled, fit screen) that better suits your screen and likings.
In my case it's zoom, since I want my wallpapers to fill the screen
without getting stretched.

-When you middle-drag an image from nautilus to the desktop and choose
set as background it overrides your preferences and is automatically
set as tiled, which forces you to open gnome-appearance-properties and
choose your preferred style again.

-This pretty much negates the use of the set as background option,
since you're forced to open the appearance dialogue anyway.

-In order for it to be useful, it should respect your preferred style.

[Bug 363319] [NEW] Wait a couple seconds before switching tabs

2009-04-18 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I often use tabs to move files from one folder to another. I open the
first tab and drag the file to the second tab. Unfortunately, it also
switches tabs: it opens the second tab, and forces me to switch back to
the first manually.

So please, make it that if I drag a file to a tab, I have to hover the
mouse over the tab for a couple seconds before switching tabs: don't do
it immediately.

[Bug 362783] [NEW] fist double-click does nothing, second opens eog but not image

[Bug 362798] [NEW] Dragging to the location bar should open the window

2009-04-17 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I would like to request the following feature:

-Let's suppose I have two folders in my desktop: Folder A and Folder B.

[Bug 358718] [NEW] Dragging a video restarts it

2009-04-09 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using ubuntu jaunty, and it seems that dragging from inside totem's
window to a folder no longer links the video file, but copies it
instead. While this is cool, it seems to have brought a nasty side
effect: dragging from inside the window and then releasing WITHOUT
leaving the window results in the video restarting, like it was loaded
again.

This can be a problem if the user wants to double-click and drags
instead, which is likely to happen on a touchpad.

[Bug 351741] [NEW] Make subtitle size relative to window size

2009-03-30 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have noticed that the size of subtitles varies depending on the size
of the video. The larger a video's resolution, the smaller the subtitles
appear.

I'm attaching a screenshot showing two videos in totem, the first being
1280x720, the second 720x352. As you can see, the subtitles look much
smaller in the first, even though both windows have the same size.

according to how big the window is, not the video's original resolution.

[Bug 333269] Re: [jaunty] leave message does not use new notify system

2009-03-30 Thread David Prieto
I was about to file a very similar bug. I made a quick mockup showing a
couple improvements:

-The window title and text are more informative, now you see exactly what
happened.
-The message itself is bold, to stand out.
-There is only one button, close. Having two buttons that did the same thing
only confused the user.

I think that should be more than enough. A simple dialogue on your
desktop when you come back. Anything beyond that would be over the top,
in my opinion.

If you enable the option to automatically resize the window when a new

[Bug 351025] Re: If video is too large, resize to 1/2 size

2009-03-29 Thread David Prieto
Hi Jon,

I have an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS/PCI/SSE2, and use the latest nvidia-
glx-180 drivers (180.37). I'm not quite sure about the specific monitor
model, but it's has a 1280x800 pixel resolution.

I tried loading a video sized 1280x720, and noticed that pressing 1
wouldn't resize the window (apparently there's no place) but pressing
0 would give an acceptable size.

Was that information enough?

[Bug 351065] [NEW] move saving gallery bar to main UI

2009-03-29 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I think that the new saving gallery progress bar should be moved to
totem's main UI, more specifically to the status bar. That way the
dialogue wouldn't be on top of the video, blocking it from view, and
also other apps like evolution do it that way.

I've made a quick mockup.

What's the rationale for moving it to Accessories? Since CD/DVD creator

[Bug 344431] Re: cd / dvd creator appears in the apps menu, not in places

2009-03-26 Thread David Prieto
He does know that it does the same as double-clicking the disc icon on
their desktops, though. Same as double-clicking a folder, or removable
device. It's not something they *have to* learn and might prefer to
ignore, it's something that they are going to encounter when they
interact with their desktop. Telling them the CD creator is NOT a place
but an app is only going to confuse them in the long run, IMO.

There is a clear difference between app (brasero) and place (CD
creator), please let's make it clear to the user. Also, as Pedro said,
people are used to places → burn.

[Bug 346657] Re: re-generate failed thumbnails

2009-03-23 Thread David Prieto
That's the thing. Files aren't thumbnailed even if they change, like
when they finished being downloaded with Transmission. Also, if you open
a directory with videos before installing their necessary codecs you
will get the generic icons, and installing the codecs afterwards will do
no good.

Really, there are plenty of reasons to retry thumbnailing at least once
in a while.

[Bug 344413] [NEW] Make it easier to burn an audio / video disk

2009-03-17 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Before ubuntu ditched serpentine in favour of brasero, it was dead easy
to make an audio cd. When you inserted a blank cd you got a dialogue
asking you whether you wanted to create a data or audio cd. Now you only
get the option to open the folder, open the cd creator (incidentally,
both options do the same), use another application or do nothing. An
easy option to make an audio cd isn't even there, and I consider that a
regression.

Please, add two options to this menu: create audio disk, which would
launch brasero -a and create video disk, which would launch brasero
-o. This would simplify things a whole lot for newcomers.

[Bug 344431] [NEW] cd / dvd creator appears in the apps menu, not in places

2009-03-17 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I'm using brasero 2.26.0 on jaunty, which seems to have added a cd /
dvd creator menu entry:

brasero (2.26.0-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (LP: #343468)
- Fixed #573790 - Make brasero nautilus extension show in system
   menu.
- Renamed nautilus extension to CD/DVD Creator to avoid any
  regression.

I guess this fix means to replicate in jaunty the previous experience in
intrepid, where you had a places → CD/DVD creator launcher. But by
placing it in apps → system tools → CD/DVD creator we not only fail to
do so, but also clutter the menus.

Please move the menu entry back to places.

[Bug 344431] Re: cd / dvd creator appears in the apps menu, not in places

2009-03-17 Thread David Prieto
I'm quoting my message in the thread you pointed me to:

I really don't understand this change:

-Almost all items under the places menu (save for search and recent files
open nautilus windows.
-All items under the apps menu open their own apps, not nautilus windows. There
already is a menu entry that opens a burning app, that is brasero.

How does it make more sense to place a menu entry which opens a nautilus window
under apps, and not places? Moreover, what use is it to clutter the apps menu
with two burning apps: brasero and NCB?

As I see it the CD/DVD creator is a place, not an app. And as such, it should
go under the places menu.

Ubuntu has sometimes moved apps from their original upstream locations,
in order not to show the system tools menu. Couldn't we do the same
this time, when it makes so much sense?

[Bug 323571] [NEW] sound CDs are shown multiple times

2009-01-31 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using the latest nautilus on Jaunty. Last night I had to rip
several audio CDs, and with every new CD I inserted an additional icon
showed up on the desktop. I'm attaching a screenshot of when I had
inserted the 6th or 7th CD.

Obviously there weren't seven CDs inserted at the moment.

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
