All I can say is, on my machine, the log in sequence is quite long,

As a user, I don't know where is exactly the issue. During the life of
this bug, the affected package list growned from compiz, to compiz +
gnome-system-monitor + human-theme. May be compiz does the right thing,
may be not, I don't know.

I beg to disagree. Ubuntu used to provide a functionality that is now
removed. If upstream introduces a bug, the ubuntu project shoudl try to
fix it, either by fixiing upstream, or in this case, by providing an
application that provides the same functionality.

Probably, yes. Rotation is not a feature that important, and it's better
to disable it instead of letting users crash their machine when they try
this setting (even if a reboot give a working machine now).
