[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-09-19 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
All of these apparmor profiles appear to be broken on live sessions for
seeded applications, e.g. kalgebra and marble on Edubuntu and digikam on
Ubuntu Studio.

[Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Marco,

Context: Scarlett is the lead for Kubuntu, so she's looking at it from a
KDE Plasma perspective, which for her packaging purposes would need a
dpkg-divert to switch the geoclue.conf to something else, but that's not
exactly a problem for her as it's not a package they ship by default.

[Bug 2062178] Re: Disable location services in gnome-control-center

2024-04-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Scarlett,

Ubuntu Studio has `plasma-wallpaper-dynamic` which pulls-in
`libqt5positioning5` which pulls in `geoclue-2.0` so Nightcolor detects
positioning by default for us. Apparently, it says this:

"The device's location will be periodically updated using GPS (if
available), or by sending network information to Mozilla Location
Service."

So yes, you're tangentially affected, just not by default. However,
geoclue does have a ton of ways to detect verses MLS, incuding Google,
so that does appear to be an option.

premature to patch this out. GeoIP is "good enough".

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-02-12 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
John,

The version in the PPA is now older than the version in the repository
so no further testing can be done unless the changes in the PPA have now
been uploaded (?).

That said, regarding electron apps, it does appear as though the .deb
versions of Visual Studio Code and Element Desktop are affected.
Granted, those are installed from outside the repository, but I'd
contend those are applications a gigantic part of the user base depends
on. In fact, for Element, that's something the Ubuntu Community will be
relying on in short order.

The only workarounds for these are to install the snap versions or
launch with `--no-sandbox`. In Element's case, it's maintained by a
third party, so that's the only factor I can see as being problematic.

2023-12-27 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Added plasma-desktop. A prompt, as proposed, would not be a solution for
this as it seems the entire desktop envirtonment, in this case, is
bugged. Simply adding a web browser widget or picture frame to the
desktop, both of which use QtWebEngine and are not separate components
but built-in components of plasma-desktop, means that this change has
broken the entirety of plasma-desktop.

[Bug 2041328] Re: gnome-session crash on Kubuntu 23.10

2023-10-26 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
If that's the case then I don't believe that this is a valid bug since
gnome-session is simply the session configuration, not the complete
gnome desktop that you would get with ubuntu-desktop or even ubuntu-
desktop-minimal. As for the other issues you're experiencing, sounds to
me like a problem with kubuntu-settings-desktop, but that would need to
be filed as a whole new bug.

As this bug may be an issue for those who may or may not have visual

[Bug 2036764] Re: indicator keyboard crashes when upgrading from lunar->mantic on ubuntu cinnamon

2023-09-20 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Upon investigation, we have determined the rdepends in question:

cinnamon-core
 +-- Depends: lightdm
 ..+-- Depends: unity-greeter
 +-- Depends: indicator-applet
 ..+-- Recommends: indicator-keyboard

Unfortunately, this means it cannot be removed from the seed/meta, and
therefore, the meta is not a factor. The problem lies in the indicator,
which appears abandoned upstream and needs to be patched for this to
work without crashing. This is, of course, assuming the autopkgtests are
correct because, as you said, Tim, you couldn't reproduce in a lxd vm.

[Bug 2016914] Re: gsd-smartcard: segfault on startup

2023-04-18 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu
that you are using.

Thank you!

[Bug 2016182] Re: terminal opened started from nautilus does not get focus

2023-04-13 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Unable to reproduce on a freshly installed machine. Try removing your
~/.config/nautilus folder, or another associated configuration. You
likely have a corrupted or otherwise misconfigured configuration.
Chances are you really need to seek support and this is not really a
bug.

[Bug 2014001] Re: Gimp crashed when I wanted to save file to a different location

2023-03-31 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
From the report: GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.99.14

This means you obtained gimp from a location outside of the Ubuntu
repositories, which is not supported. The highest available version is
2.10.34 in ubuntu lunar lobster (future 23.04). As such, this bug will
be closed as invalid.

[Bug 2012309] Re: gdm3: autostart folder for .desktop files is not working in Ubuntu 23.04

Here's the other thing you haven't considered:

Ubuntu 23.04 is expected to have gdm3 44 before release, and we haven't
even approached beta yet.

Maybe you just need to wait?

[Bug 2012309] Re: gdm3: autostart folder for .desktop files is not working in Ubuntu 23.04

2023-03-20 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
>I don't understand why this bug was marked as Opinion. If something
works in the previous version and don't work in current version is a Bug
or a Regression.

Because, per the documentation, the method changed. Therefore, this was
an upstream change. Therefore, it is your *opinion* that it should have
stayed the same. That's not a bug or regression. In programming and
methodology, things change all the time and the downstreams must adapt
to it.

Therefore, instead of placing .desktop files in
/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/, they should now be placed in
/usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/. However, I have only ever seen
autostart ever controlled by the gnome-shell executable and executed in
/etc/xdg/autostart. So, try placing your desktop files in that folder
and see what happens.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the
support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are
uncertain if they are bugs. If you would prefer live chat support, you
can find an IRC support channel for your flavor of Ubuntu here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList. You can also find help with
your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 1860899] Re: Add extra information to tabs in folders

2022-12-27 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Although the upstream bug was closed and Launchpad interpreted that
closure as "Fix Released", it was closed as "Feature: Out of Scope"
meaning it will not be implemented. Therefore, this feature request will
be closed as "Won't Fix" as it is the equivalent closure method here.

Marco, it's a great suggestion and, from an Audio/Video
technician/engineer perspective, something I'd really want. However,
those who control the project disagree and wish to keep things extremely
simple for the benefit of the general public, it seems, and that's ok.
To be honest, this kind of feature is one that easily lands in Dolphin,
the KDE file manager.

referee here.

Luis, you cannot force someone to work on a bug report.

Alberto, since you're unwilling or unable to confirm, please keep the
report as incomplete for gimp.

To maintain a respectful atmosphere, please follow the code of conduct -
http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/conduct. Bug reports are
handled by humans, the majority of whom are volunteers, so please bear
this in mind.

2022-04-15 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the
support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are
uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find help with your problem in
the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/
or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org. For help
on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1796211] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in g_themed_icon_equal() from st_icon_set_gicon() using extension 'gsconnect'

2022-02-20 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 18.10 (cosmic) reached end-of-life on July 18, 2019.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested
in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the
latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still
present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling
us which new version it is in.

N.B. An update to this package for Jammy Jellyfish (future 22.04) is in
progress and cannot be backported or otherwise SRU'd to earlier
releases.

[Bug 1780296] Re: [SRU] Update to bugfix 2.0.5 in Bionic

2022-01-28 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and make Ubuntu
better. We apologize that we're not always able to get to bug reports in
a timely manner as most bug triage is done by volunteers.

This appears to be an attempt at an SRU, however, it does not follow the
prescribed SRU procedure. If the reporter does not have upload rights, a
fix will need to be sponsored by a member of the Ubuntu Core Development
team.

Proper SRU procedure is outlined here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure

As of this comment, this bug has yet to be fixed. Realistically, the
likelihood of this fix happening is lessening as 18.04 (Bionic) reaches
End of Regular Support in April 2023, meaning that nearly four of the
five-year regular support span has already lapsed.

The best method of resolving this is to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or,
when it releases April 2022, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Additionally, the likelihood of an SRU happening is slim due to this:

> * libtracker-direct: Majorly rewritten

Any major rewrites usually constitute a rejection of an SRU. However, I
am not on the SRU team, so YMMV.

[Bug 1944468] [NEW] Electron applications all crash upon launch

2021-09-21 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
Public bug reported:

Just a few weeks ago, I noticed the .deb version of Visual Studio Code
crashing upon launch. I also noticed Element (matrix client) also would
crash. The only thing these applications have in common is electron. I
was hoping this would get noticed by someone and that the issue would be
figured out, but I guess that person had to be me.

Erroneously-filed bug 1943568 exhibits the same issues. Experimenting
with Visual Studio Code provided this:

When either application was provided "--no-sandbox" at the command line, they
would run normally. However, Element does not pass that via command line, so I
was unable to use the workaround for that.

Upon investigating the runtime dependencies for Element, Atom, and
VSCode, the one thing they had in common was libgtk-3-0, and the date of
2021-09-03 for publishing coincides with the time in which these errors
started to appear.

Another workaround, other than the "--no-sandbox" usage, is to use the
snap version of the apps if available, or flatpak. These provide their
own versions of these dependencies, which tells me these .deb-based
applications are affected by libgtk-3-0.

Granted, those applications are not in the Ubuntu repository, however,
many people (including myself) rely on those to function correctly. It
would be very bad if Electron apps failed to function when 21.10 is
released.
