Ubuntu doesn't use the password on the root user; in general Ubuntu will
ask for your users password when switching to root (using sudo).
You don't say which software you are trying to install; I've converted this to
a question so that you can ask for how to install it on Ubuntu.

in the 2.32.0-0ubuntu12 version in natty (in the en_GB:en language) these are
Rotate Left and Rotate Right, so it appears fixed.
Having said that I haven't tried it on 10.10 to confirm the original failure.
