[Bug 1702467] Re: software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Problem identified: an unrelated stray one-line `sitecustomize.py` in
$PYTHONPATH. Thank you for the hint.

This bug can be closed now, or, maybe, the importance lowered (the
indicator should cope better in the presence of warnings).

[Bug 1702467] Re: software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
apt-get, apt and aptitude work all just fine and produce no errors nor
warnings.

update-notifier/apt-check is, indeed, responsible for the error message.

gioele:~$ /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check
Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback:
AttributeError: module 'sys' has no attribute 'setdefaultencoding'
0;0gioele:~$ echo $?
0

Please note the missing newline between the end of the output of apt-
check and the prompt.

gioele:~$ which python
/usr/bin/python
gioele:~$ readlink -f /usr/bin/python
/usr/bin/python2.7

Thank you Sebastien for the triaging.

[Bug 1702467] [NEW] software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

On a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS install, the software update indicator
indicator crashes (probably during startup) and reports the a mangled
error.

It states

> The error message was 'ror in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE
> for traceback: AttributeError: module 'sys' has no attribute
> 'setdefaultencoding' 0;0'.

Please note the "ror" instead of "Error" at the beginning of the
reported error message.

The attached screenshot shows this error.

In a default Ubuntu 14.04 installation, OTF and WOFF files are not

Why is nautilus detecting the OFT as a LibreOffice document?

file(1) can correctly detect it as TrueType font data

cluttering the home directory, it should follow the XDG Base Directory

[Bug 960135] [NEW] Minimum brightness level should switch off the display

2012-03-20 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

The minimum display brightness level should switch off the display, not
just dim the display. This makes it possible to voluntarily switch off
the display of a laptop; currently you must wait for the inactivity
timeout to power it off.

The brightness levels should be, similarly to Mac OS and Windows,
something like

OFF - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

not the current

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

[Bug 910129] Re: Nautilus uses 100% CPU when other apps update files

2011-12-31 Thread Gioele Barabucci
The same problem happens at login: as soon as I log in into a GNOME
session, nautilus starts using 100% of the CPU and reading furiously
from the disk. Thankfully, in this case, that lasts only for two or
three minutes.

I suppose that nautilus keeps ~/Documents under control and updates its
thumbnails, or other metadata, as soon as a file is created or modified.
The problem is that nautilus runs with nice = 0 and for some reasons
leaks a huge amount of memory (~2GB per hour). Or, perhaps, it is
disturbed by the fact that files are created in the new/ directory and
then moved to the cur/ directory, as it is normal with Maildir
directories.

[Bug 860270] [NEW] cannot resume from hibernation when on AC power but low on battery

2011-09-26 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

If my laptop hibernates because the battery is about to run out of power
and I plug in the adapter, Ubuntu will refuse to resume correctly from
hibernation.

What happens is this

1. get a warning for low battery
2. ignore the warning :)
3. laptop hibernates
4. plug in the adapter, laptop is now charging
5. power on the laptop
6. laptop start resuming from hibernation

What happen now is the bug I am reporting

7. after few seconds the computer goes back into hibernation

If I let the battery charge for a while (let's say 10 minutes), the
computer resumes from hibernation without any problem.

I think the problem is that the battery still reports a low power level
because is has been charged for only few seconds. This makes the
application that overviews the battery level (gnome-power-manager?)
think that it is time to hibernate. If this is the problem, them the
application should be fixed to never hibernate if the laptop is on AC
power, regardless of the battery level.

[Bug 595934] [NEW] gvfs-backends should be split in multiple sub-packages

2010-06-18 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

The gvfs-backends should be transformed in a meta-package that only
recommends other more specific sub-packages.

Currently the gvfs-backends package contains «the afc, archive, burn,
cdda, dav, dnssd, ftp, gphoto2, http, network, obexftp, sftp,
smb and smb-browse backends» and depends on 22 different libraries.

While all these backends may come handy at times, low-resource computer
would benefit if some of these where not installed.

For example cd-less computers (not only netbooks) do not need the burn
or cdda backends. These two backends install and run a demon that
requires memory and installs unneeded libraries.

A similar argument applies to the AFS backend (not that much useful
these days to a wide audience, runs a daemon), gphoto2 (office
workstation and thin clients do not need it, runs a daemon), obexftp
(makes any Gnome installation dependent on Bluetooth libraries) and any
other protocol.

While installing all these backends by default is certainly a good
thing, not having a way to remove them when not needed is a problem.
Making gvfs-backends a meta-package and splitting its current content in
multiple packages (gvfs-backends-afs, gvfs-backends-sftp, gvfs-backends-
smb) would retain the good behaviour while still allowing users with
little resources (RAM, disk, CPU) to remove the unneeded components.

[Bug 595934] Re: gvfs-backends should be split in multiple sub-packages

2010-06-18 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Just a quick note on the subject: this is a quick summary of the memory
used by some of the daemons that are currently spawned every time a user
logs in.

Obviously you can't just sum up the VmRSS or VmSize fields, but, anyway,
most of these kilobytes are just plain wasted in many configurations.
When thinking about this issue, also the number of wake-ups forced by
these daemons and the time that it takes to launch them when the user
logs it should be taken into account.

[Bug 172841] Re: Cannot disable cron from the Services preference pane

2009-11-04 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Actually I (the reporter) never used Jaunty. This problem was present
in Hardy-1, Hardy and Intrepid.

Now I'm on Karmic and, as Milan Bouchet-Valat, there is now a completely
different bug: services-admin does not exist.

I think this bug can be closed now, at least with regard to the purpose
I reported it.

[Bug 459939] [NEW] Clock applet ignores locale settings

2009-10-24 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The clock applet shows Sunday as the first day of the week while it
should be showing Monday as LC_TIME is set to it_IT.UTF8.

My locale is set so that the messages are displayed in US English while
the rest of the environment adheres to the Italian standards (Celsius
degrees, units and cents separated by comma, etc). It seems that the
clock applet is ignoring these settings.

Maybe the problem is related to the fact that I once used gnome-
language-selector.

[Bug 460030] [NEW] Palimpsest displays out-of-range SMART values

2009-10-24 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

Palimpsest (2.28.0 on amd64) says that the Read error rate of my main
disk is OK and has value 230874873 (raw 0xf9dec20d). The
normalized value is 119, the worst value is 100 and the threshold
value is 6.

Obviously there is something strange in these values. Maybe SMART is
reporting them in the wrong way, anyway Palimpsest should do some
sanity-check before reporting them.

[Bug 162021] Re: Cannot use Konsole as default terminal application

2007-11-14 Thread Gioele Barabucci
I know I can add it as a Custom terminal, but then, what is the point
of having a default application chooser if I cannot choose the
competing terminal emulator?

There should be a way to select one of the *installed* terminal
applications, not just those that maintainer included in their
application list.

PS: why did you set this bug to incomplete?
