The fglrx/gamma issue can be solved temporarily by rebuilding the package --without-xf86gamma-ext. If the problem persists with future fglrx releases (as of 8.40.4 it's still there), maybe a gconf /apps /gnome-screensaver/fade boolean key should be created so there is a simpler way to disable
