[Bug 1923187] [NEW] [FFe] Enable opencc support

2021-04-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

opencc is a tool for conversion between traditional and simplified
Chinese. In Debian ibus-libpinyin with opencc support has been in
testing since the year end, and no bugs have been reported as a result
of that.

On the Ubuntu side we had to disable opencc support, since the required
additional dependencies - libopencc1.1, libopencc-data and libmarisa0 -
were in universe.

libopencc1.1 and libopencc-data have since been promoted to main (bug
#1909665), and as regards libmarisa0 it has been cleared for main
promoting by both the MIR team and the security team (bug #1914808).

Accordingly I'm asking the release team for permission to enable opencc
support in Ubuntu hirsute too.

[Bug 885086] Re: XDG "Desktop" item not translated on Live CD

2021-03-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Correction: I do see it in the live session, and I think the explanation
is that the ~/Desktop directory is created before xdg-user-dirs-update
is executed via autostart, and that in turn is because the
ubiquity.desktop file (for starting the installation) is located there.

One way to fix it may be to change the installer (casper?) so
ubiquity.desktop is placed in "xdg-user-dir DESKTOP" only after it has
been created via xdg-user-dirs-update.

However, if I complete a non-English installation, the ~/Desktop folder
is translated properly for me. So @Yousuf, if you see it on an installed
system, please provide details.

[Bug 1916319] Re: Excessive number of disparate fonts bundled together

2021-02-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report. It seems to be an offshoot from
.

Please note that the fonts-noto packaging happens at Debian, so Debian
is a more proper place to bring up this discussion.

I see the old bug . Actually, the fonts-
noto package is a meta package which pulls a bunch of binaries:

$ apt depends fonts-noto
fonts-noto
  Depends: fonts-noto-core
  Recommends: fonts-noto-cjk
  Recommends: fonts-noto-cjk-extra
  Recommends: fonts-noto-color-emoji
  Recommends: fonts-noto-extra
  Recommends: fonts-noto-mono
  Recommends: fonts-noto-ui-core
  Recommends: fonts-noto-ui-extra
  Recommends: fonts-noto-unhinted

But since your request is about splitting fonts-noto-core further, I
don't think the old Debian bug applies, so you'd better submit a new
one.

[Bug 1913218] Re: Obscure shortcut selector behaviour

2021-01-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hey, Daniel, please don't sound as if I had questioned the whole
workflow for your great work with triaging desktop bugs. It was
certainly not my intention to do that; my apologies if it sounded
otherwise.

What I brought up was that tag - and the way you said in comment #3 you
use it occasionally. In summary, what I want to say is simply: Use that
strategy with caution.

As regards the possible approach I mentioned, let's take bug #1913222 as
an example (with the same bug reporter as this one).

- Upstream in nature (and reported upstream)
- Low importance
- Very unlikely to be patched in Ubuntu
- "groovy" tag even if the behavior is not specific to groovy

That combo makes me think that "won't fix" would be a proper status
right now. I don't see how it's useful to keep it open in Ubuntu's bug
tracker for a few months, and then close it in July due to EOL (which
would be a reason hard to understand for the bug reporter, who will most
likely see the same thing in hirsute).

Not sure that's the most adequate way to measure the success of the
current workflow.

The ultimate purpose of the bug tracker is to improve the quality of the
software we make available. The method I outlined would probably result
in fewer open bugs, but they would be closed more transparently, and
which bugs would stay and which ones would be closed would be determined
based on importance and thus less randomly.

There may well be aspects that I miss, but how about giving my idea a
thought? :)

@Rulon: Please bear with us for using your bug report for discussing a
much more wide topic than the specific issue you reported.

That's what I suspected. ;) While I understand, I don't really like it.
For bugs of some significance I would prefer them to stay until
resolved. For truly upstream and less important bugs, why not just point
the bug reporter to upstream and close it with "won't fix", with the
explanation that we don't have the resources to fix it in Ubuntu only.

The issue at hand has been there for many cycles. While I see that the

Thanks for your report.

This is an upstream GNOME matter, and should better be discussed there.
OTOH, it looks like the discussion has already started.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1222

So possibly in GNOME 40 (Ubuntu 21.10).

However, in the meantime you can use another mechanism for setting input
source shortcuts. It's available in Tweaks (you need to install gnome-
tweaks) and allows several combinations which can currently not be
selected via Settings.

[Bug 1912211] Re: Scrolling of pages in "Show Application"

2021-01-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I reproduced the issue, i.e. not being able to scroll beyond the first
application window in "Show Applications", by installing the 20.04.1 ISO
in a VirtualBox VM. I accomplished the installation without downloading
upgraded packages, so it was a true vanilla Ubuntu 20.04.1 installation.

Then I updated all packages and rebooted, but the issue was still there.

Then I uninstalled gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and rebooted, and
now the "Show Applications" scrolling worked as expected.

Finally I reinstalled gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and rebooted,
and the issue was back.

So it seems to be something with gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock. Btw,
I used an external USB connected mouse.

Shouldn't the importance of this bug be raised? After all it's about a
core feature of the Ubuntu desktop.

That happens to me if the search field is not focused when you start

I have Ubuntu MATE on a VM and could reproduce your first issue there,

Consequently this is probably an xkeyboard-config issue and not specific

I disabled NumLock, and then it didn't behave as weirdly as it did on my
first try. On the contrary I was able to reproduce your first issue.

But it would still be valuable to know if the issues are present also on
other desktop environments.

[Bug 1909347] Re: Keyboard layout used in the second place breaks keymap

2020-12-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

German (Neo 2) is a very special keyboard layout, and when I add it to
my list of input sources it breaks a few things on my other layouts, and
as regards Neo 2 I don't have a clue how to make sense of it.

Have you tried to use Neo 2 on other desktop environments but
Ubuntu/GNOME? If you have, and see similar issues there, it's probably
not related to gnome-control-center, and then you may want to report
your findings upstream:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-
config/-/issues

OTOH, if the unexpected behavior is only seen on Ubuntu/GNOME, this bug
report is possibly a reasonable starting point.

Could be. Myself always reboot before testing changes to such core
components as mutter is.

That sounds promising, Leonid. The submitter of
also confirmed that the PPA packages
fix a similar issue.

Maybe the fix we are testing only addresses issues with xkb-options.
scheleaap's case seems to be about using some other keyboard layout but
the system one. While it's indeed a similar case, it's not identical and
the mechanisms behind the scenes differ.

[Bug 1903449] Re: accountsservice displays "Libvirt Qemu"

2020-11-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The issue is not present in Ubuntu 20.04 or later. The question is if
dropping the patch retroactively as a bionic stable release update
should be done. I discussed this with Sebastien Bacher in the ubuntu-
desktop team, and we concluded that we are not able to tell that no
bionic user depends on the patch, so we won't drop it for bionic.

In case of libvirt-qemu you provided a nice workaround, which may be
useful for other users who encounter the issue.

2020-11-06 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Current status of this bug:

The gnome-terminal fix for groovy has been pushed to the VCS repo. I'm
waiting for a sponsor to upload it.

As regards hirsute: We have identified three upstream pango commits
which together with the gtk fix in hirsute-proposed fix the issue the
'right' way. The pango PPA now contains all the three commits:

[Bug 1900729] Re: gnome-terminal font settings show only italic version of ubuntu mono

2020-11-06 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

When you want to select a monospace font in gnome-terminal's profile
editor, it does not always show the regular font but rather an
- arbitrarily chosen one. The proposed gtk+3.0 upload cherry picks an
- upstream commit which fixes it.
+ arbitrarily chosen one. The proposed gnome-terminal upload reverts an
+ upstream commit, which means that all weights/styles for monospace fonts
+ are shown. It takes us back to how it works in focal.

  [Test case]

- * Install the binaries built from gtk+3.0 in groovy-proposed
+ * Install the binaries built from gnome-terminal in groovy-proposed

  * Relogin

  * Open gnome-terminal -> Preferences and open the window for selecting a
- custom font for the profile. Find that it shows regular fonts only.
+ custom font for the profile. Find that it shows all available monospace
+ fonts. Confirm for a few fonts that they can actually be selected
+ without issues.

- [ Regression risk ]
+ [Where problems could occur]

- The upstream commit was written explicitly to fix this issue, so the
- regression risk should be low. Please note that the only affected file
- is gtk/gtkfontchooserwidget.c, so the scope is very limited which in
- itself ought to limit the regression risk.
+ This is a one liner in gnome-terminal and does not affect other
+ applications. So given a successful verification of the test case, this
+ ought to be a safe change.
+
+ [Other info]
+
+ Please note that this particular change has not been made in hirsute.
+ The reason is that we intend to follow upstream there, which means that
+ the issue will be resolved through changes in gtk and pango.

[Bug 1900729] Re: gnome-terminal font settings show only italic version of ubuntu mono

2020-11-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This is getting too complicated to handle as an SRU considering that
it's a not-so-important issue after all. So I think we should simply
revert the problematic gnome-terminal commit in groovy only, and hope
that upstream sorts it out for hirsute. So I would like to upload this
fix to groovy:

[Bug 1902829] [NEW] Missing "Mobile Broadband" menu item

2020-11-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

gnome-shell does not show the "Mobile Broadband" menu item in Ubuntu
20.10, which practically prevents net access for users who depend on
mobile broadband. An upstream fix has recently been pushed.

[Test case]

* Install the binaries built by the gnome-shell source package from
groovy-proposed

* Reboot

* Confirm with a USB dongle for mobile broadband that it's recognized in
the system menu and allows you to connect.

[Regression risk]

The issue was triggered by a change to gjs, and the fix simply adds two
property getters. Low regression risk.

[Bug 1824260] Re: wrong kerning in SS-5 PDF form fields

2020-10-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Right xiota, and I think adding CourierStd to 45-latin.conf is
sufficient.

I could reproduce the problem on Ubuntu 20.10, so it's not a Kubuntu
specific issue as I first suspected. Instead, just as you said, it's
because CourierStd isn't currently mentioned anywhere in the config
files.

Proposed fix attached as a debdiff.

On 2020-10-26 10:33, Sebastien Bacher wrote:

One thing I know is that no Ubuntu font is mentioned at all in the
default fontconfig configuration, neither on Ubuntu nor Kubuntu.

But the dconf settings differ.

Ubuntu:

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name
'Ubuntu 11'
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name
'Ubuntu Mono 13'

Kubuntu:

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name
'Noto Sans, 10'
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface monospace-font-name
'Monospace 11'

My gut feeling tells me that the comma in 'Noto Sans, 10' should not be
there, and that it might cause confusion.

This is one thing I would try on Kubuntu:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface font-name 'Noto Sans 10'

However, while I checked this on my groovy installs, the bug reporter
seems to be on Kubuntu 18.04. So things may be different there.

[Bug 1900906] Re: Can't input accents in GNOME shell

I can reproduce the issue on focal but not on groovy. I installed the
groovy version of the ibus binaries on focal, but the issue was still
present, so this seems not to be an ibus bug.

I can type ü with a German keyboard layout, so it seems to be about dead
keys rather than accented letters as such. Furthermore, I can't input
e.g. Chinese characters using IBus at all.

That wouldn't make much sense considering that you saw the changed
behavior only the past few weeks.

Maybe it's not really a gnome-shell issue. The upstream similar bug,
which Daniel linked to, was moved from gnome-shell to mutter.

So if you want to make a similar attempt with mutter, you would do:

sudo apt install mutter=3.36.1-3ubuntu3 mutter-common=3.36.1-3ubuntu3

I set gnome-shell as the affected package for now, since a theory would
be that the changed behavior is related to some upgrade of that package.

sudo apt install gnome-shell=3.36.1-5ubuntu1 gnome-shell-

Thanks David and Sean for confirming.

At the first attempt the translations were not imported to LP, so I have
fixed a detail and uploaded 3.38.0-2build1 (no-change rebuild). Let's
cross our fingers.

More precisely you submitted suggestions which will need to be approved by some
member of .

Then, provided that the Russian translators team participates in testing
next time the language packs are updated, the correction will make it to
all Russian Ubuntu users.

[Bug 1898541] [NEW] [FFe] Update to 3.38.0

2020-10-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

It would be good if we could ship gnome-software 3.38.0 with groovy.

These are the 3.37.92 changes:

Add sysprof support for profiling jobs
Add webflow and basic auth support to flatpak plugin
Coalesce refresh operations where possible
Correctly mark layered rpm-ostree local packages as removable
Fix flatpak bundle installation
Handle invalid snap auth data
Improve flatpak progress reporting for transactions
Improve the heuristic for detecting old-style AppStream override files
Many performance improvements in many areas of the code
Only delete the firmware archive if we downloaded it to the cache
Show a pulsing progress bar if progress is unknown
Support loading appstream files from custom install prefix
Use the runtime fwupd version for the user agent

3.38.0 is a pure translation update.

[Bug 1866038] Re: By default install Noto fonts for Unicode ranges not already covered by default

Yeah, I think my idea to ship Noto fonts by default and give them the
highest fontconfig precedence, effectively replacing DejaVu, would cover
the proposal in this bug.

@Henri: What I have in mind has basically already been done in Kubuntu.
It would be great if you could put the Kubuntu ISO
() on a USB stick, run the live
session, and see if the default Kubuntu fonts are to your liking.

[Bug 1893736] Re: ibus-libpinyin can not export user phrases

2020-09-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
The installation/Mongolian thing is completely unrelated.

As regards the bogus language item in the list when you open Language
Support, you can probably get rid of it by running this command:

sudo rmdir /usr/share/locale-langpack/mn

And your locale() output looks fine.

So nothing of that is an indication that your system is broken.

As regards uninstalling the system: Well, it's up to you and how
important you think that the ability to be able to export ibus-libpinyin
user data is.

Closing this bug, since the issue is not reproducible.
