I'm using gdm on plain mode, is working well with our ltsp-4.2 clients,
so I'm not testing anything else, but I have some ideas:
Have you test with xdm or wdm?
The ubuntu ltsp project use ldm for remote login over ssh

¿the X server is accepting TCP conections?
Check the DisallowTCP parameter in section [security], it must be false:
DisallowTCP=false

1. GDM greeter must be plain.
2. I need execute metacity from a command line because it don't start
when the session starts.
I'been tried to find more data, but I couldn't find in any log.
