[Bug 2059799] [NEW] GIMP N-Point Deformation crash on initial click

2024-03-29 Thread Jacob
Public bug reported:

I ran gimp with `gimp --show-playground`, went to Edit -> Preferences ->
Playground, enabled N-Point Deformation and Seamless Cloning. Closed
GIMP, opened GIMP without the `--show-playground` option, loaded a
512x512 PNG, duplicated the layer, clicked on the N-Point Deformation
tool icon in the tool box to the left, clicked on the image, a circle
shape appeared where I clicked, then GIMP crashed a split second later.

[Bug 2026194] Re: When clicking on some maximized or tiled windows, focus on roughly the lower quarter falls to the window behind

2023-07-10 Thread Jacob Godserv
One thing I've found is this is a high frequency occurrence with
IntelliJ. I have not seen this issue with the snap versions of Sublime
Text or Firefox. I did experience the issue in the snap version of GIMP
the one time I had it open.

Another interesting effect is that I am unable to resize the window in
the lower corners, even if all the elements within the window are
otherwise behaving normally. This is not true of Firefox or Sublime.

In addition, Sublime and Firefox render shadows outside their window
borders, whereas the IntelliJ window does not.

I have no idea if any of this is related.

2023-07-10 Thread Jacob Godserv
Interestingly, this also happened once where the right quarter was
clicking through as well. I noticed this when trying to interact with
the title bar buttons (minimize, restore, close) and I ended up clicking
the title bar buttons of the window behind.

[Bug 2026194] Re: When clicking on some maximized or tiled windows, focus on roughly the lower quarter falls to the window behind

2023-07-07 Thread Jacob Godserv
Current workaround appears to be:
1. "Un"-maximize the window (aka "restore" the window)
2. Interact with the window at least once.
3. Maximize the window again.

This appears to somehow work around this focus "click through" issue.

I thought I had removed all unsupported extensions.

Here is my extension setup:

# gsettings get org.gnome.shell enabled-extensions

# ls -l ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

[Bug 2026194] [NEW] When clicking on some maximized or tiled windows, focus on roughly the lower quarter falls to the window behind

2023-07-05 Thread Jacob Godserv
Public bug reported:

Initially I thought this was an issue with IntelliJ and filed a bug there:
https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-323780/Maximizing-the-the-window-sometimes-causes-clicks-on-a-lower-fraction-to-pass-through-to-the-window-behind

But when I had the same issue with GIMP, I realized it's an Ubuntu or
GNOME issue instead. I am assuming this is a gnome-shell problem.

Every once in a while, when I maximize or tile (Win+Right) the IntelliJ window,
a bottom fraction of the window (somewhere around a quarter) becomes impossible
to interact with, with the mouse. Clicking in that lower area will give focus
to the thing behind IntelliJ, and if it's a window, raise it to the foreground.
if I restore the window so that it is not maximized, the entire window is
interactive with the mouse once again.

This also happened with GIMP.

The attached "Screencast" is a recording. I had to crop it to hide personal
information. The attached screenshot shows the state of my screen so you have
context, with a bright green color used to replace personal information.

For the first 10s of the recording, I simply moused over to show how the
cursor changes around a quarter from the bottom of the screen.

For the next 10s, I left click, then move, then left click, then move,
until focus changes to Sublime, the window behind IntelliJ.

For the remainder of the video I show that right-clicking and mousing
over works fine on the top three quarters, until I reach the bottom
again, and then the right click is sent to Sublime.

[Bug 1960621] Re: MATE Desktop session fails to start with NVIDIA 495 & 510 drivers

2022-03-09 Thread Jacob Moroni
Hello Martin,

I noticed that you pushed a release to Jammy which disables Xpresent to
work around this issue. As expected, this re-introduces screen tearing
on my system running Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics.

I've manually switched to the most recent release with Xpresent still
enabled and the tearing is gone.

According to bug 1959995, this issue has been fixed in Jammy. If that's
true, do you have any plans on re-enabling Xpresent? Should a new bug be
opened for that?

[Bug 1922353] Re: Overview sometimes fails to appear or disappear in gnome-shell 3.38

2021-06-03 Thread Jacob Knopp
I have this bug on a fresh install, sort of a bummer. Disabling the dock
extension did resolve the issue.

System information:
Dell Inspiron 5502
Intel i7-1165g7
16 GB RAM dual channel (mixed manufacturer, same RAM specs)
Dual NVMe SSDs, with ubuntu/grub isolated to secondary drive, windows 10 on
primary drive

[Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-08-02 Thread Benjamin Jacob Reji
Regarding bug mentioned in Side note 2 of
#20 Comment

I face the same issue, and am able to fix it via the fractional scaling method.
I was able to reproduce this over two separate clean installs on my machine.

Also following #20 comment helped solved the display rotating issue.
Thank you devs for the fix.
Regards

[Bug 1878275] Re: [qxl] wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)

2020-06-08 Thread John Jacob
I used apport-unpack to extract the coredump from the crash file, and
then ran gdb on it. The two attachments gdb_laptop.log and gdb_vm.log
are from gdb in the laptop and in the VM, respectively. Without debug
symbols, the backtraces are not complete.

I tried to install debug symbols in the VM, as detailed at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages , but it failed due
to:

2020-05-18 Thread John Jacob
You can see the core at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/e35124d979e3b918d0a8f821141d16026a6862cda0707840355369e69b328df9d3a372a704b7af732e746e1600eb565efebfb0f79a83711873cfbe43fe12a08c

Killing the gnome-shell process resolves the freeze and the login
continues normally after that.

[Bug 1878275] Re: wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)

2020-05-15 Thread John Jacob
Daniel,

I reproduced the same issue in a VM in post #4, and I gave you the steps
to reproduce it. I strongly suggest you *try* it. It is trivially
simple, takes less than five minutes to reproduce, or 15 minutes tops if
you want to spin up a new VM. This is exactly the same issue that I saw
on my laptop.

The reason I reproduced this on a VM was to confirm that the issue could
be seen on other machines, and to give you an easily reproducible test
case, so that you can confirm the bug and move it the right team to
investigate.

Otherwise, we can keep repeating this dance of asking for more information and
moving the bug back to incomplete, but this does nothing to advance our mutual
goal of helping make Ubuntu better.

[Bug 1878275] Re: wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)

2020-05-13 Thread John Jacob
Here are steps to reproduce the issue. Confirmed on a fresh Ubuntu 20.04
install in a VM.

sudo apt install keychain
mkdir ~/.ssh
cd ~/.ssh
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "user@domain"
 # -- Enter a passphrase when asked.
vi ~/.bash_profile
 # -- Add the following text. Replace "user" with the actual user name.
 #!/bin/bash
 set autologout=0
 # Setup password-less SSH
 [ -z "$HOSTNAME" ] && HOSTNAME=`uname -n`
 keychain /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
 source /home/user/.keychain/${HOSTNAME}-sh

Reboot. On the login screen, click on the user, then select "Ubuntu on Wayland"
in the Gear icon.
Enter password and login.

Result: login screen hangs indefinitely.

[Bug 1878275] Re: wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)

2020-05-13 Thread John Jacob
Hi Daniel,

Thank you for taking a look at my bug report.
1. There are no crash files in /var/crash.
2.
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/27232d1c0322b0e12fbced3d5cc680848662bdab3723e8c5a2ef4f4994f0f37d64c8663e929ae708ddbfce7b00cf9529860901cc62597a8b0b414d4b29fc9792
has three problems reported, but none of them correspond to this issue.

I actually do not think there is a crash, rather that some part of the
session is waiting for me to enter the keychain passphrase in a way that
is hanging the GUI.

I verified that if I SSH in from another machine, and enter the
passphrase in the SSH session *before* I login from the GDM login
screen, everything works fine.

Let me know what other steps you would like me to take.

[Bug 1878275] [NEW] wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)

2020-05-12 Thread John Jacob
Public bug reported:

When I login to my laptop running Ubuntu 20.04, after entering my
username, when I choose the "gear" button and select Ubuntu on Wayland
as the session type, my laptop freezes hard. Mouse and keyboard do not
respond, and the first three times I hit this issue I had to forcibly
power off. The normal (X11) Ubuntu session works fine.

However, I realized that I could still ping and ssh in, and doing that
gave me some clues to the issue.

I have keychain installed for password-less SSH, and my bash_profile has:
---
#!/bin/bash
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f $HOME/.bashrc ] ; then
  source $HOME/.bashrc
fi

# Setup password-less SSH
[ -z "$HOSTNAME" ] && HOSTNAME=`uname -n`
keychain $HOME/.ssh/id_rsa
source $HOME/.keychain/${HOSTNAME}-sh
---

When I login via SSH from another machine after hitting the issue, I get:
[johnjaco@johnjaco-m-v02f: ~/Downloads] ssh john@192.168.1.10

[Bug 1632211] Re: Evolution constantly loses connection to gmail

2020-02-10 Thread Jacob
There is currently some kind of workaround for this error.

Just open up a terminal and enter:

evolution --force-shutdown

This causes all Evolution related processes to be shut down. They will
be re-started if Evolution is started the next time, and as the inter-
process communication is re-established, the error will disappear.

[Bug 1854222] [NEW] Screen keyboard improperly appears on laptops with touchscreen

2019-11-27 Thread Jacob
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
gnome-shell version 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.2

Directions to produce bug:
* Install Ubuntu 18.04 onto a laptop with a touchscreen.
* Install uxterm package.
* Upgrade software packages to most recent version.
* Confirm "Screen Keyboard" and "Typing Assist" are disabled in Universal
Access.
* Reboot.
* Log in and start "uxterm".
* Switch focus to another window.
* Touch the "uxterm" window.

Expected proper behavior: "uxterm" window gets focus, no other actions.

Actual inappropriate behavior: "uxterm" window gets focus, and screen
keyboard appears in defiance of "Screen Keyboard: off" setting and
presence of undetachable physical keyboard.

Empirical testing indicates that the screen keyboard doesn't appear for
every touch, but seems to appear for every touch to any area that
accepts text input, or perhaps for all areas that aren't internally
marked somehow as not accepting text.

This is a reappearance of Bug #1723857. The reappearance was noted in
comments 61 and 62 of that bug, but apparently ignored because the bug
is closed. I am creating this as a new bug per the guidance in
1723857#60: "This bug is closed so if you experience any problem at all
then please open a new one." by Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt).

tiled causes the window to be stuck where it is dropped.

Related: https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/1185
and https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/1189

After the fix, mentioned here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=788666, most windows can be
tiled now, except for gedit windows. Those still make the desktop hang.

[Bug 1716077] [NEW] Settings app draws window controls incorrectly

2017-09-08 Thread Jacob Maher
Public bug reported:

When changing window controls to the left side. Gnome control center
will not draw them correctly. the controls are drawn on the middle of
the window instead of the left. I have made this change by setting
/org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/button-layout to
'close, minimize, maximize:appmenu' in dconf-editor. this issue is not
present if the window controls remain on the right hand side.

[Bug 1278437] Re: can't move link type .desktop files around on desktop

2016-07-09 Thread Jacob
How is this fixed?

I just downloaded 16.04 after a five year break from Linux. It was too
many headaches back then. Just trying to print or install a program
turned into days long ordeals. Drivers, dependencies, a AH!
I just want to get some work done.

Now I'm back for another try and I don't even have it on my computer an
hour. I try to move some desktop links so my desktop doesn't look like a
sh*thole and the weblink won't move. Then it tries to copy and copy
itself like some rabbit 4uckfest.

I'm off to the Apple store.

2016-05-19 Thread Jacob Taylor
I have appstream 0.9.4-1 installed and every time it is run

I'm suffering the same issue.

`sudo apt purge appstream`

did not save me. Now it's locked at 100% cpu when I `sudo apt install

command running is `appstream refresh-index --force`.

[Bug 1581899] [NEW] Cant move workspace diagonaly to top left

2016-05-14 Thread Jacob
Public bug reported:

When using arrow keys in workspace switcher, cannot use up and left
arrow keys simultaneously to move diagonally to top left workspace
window from the bottom right workspace. Moving diagonally does work when
moving from bottom left workspace to top right for example, and all
other combinations diagonally seem to work fine, just cannot move from
bottom right to top left directly.

[Bug 1500673] Re: gdm unusable after upgrading to 15.10

2015-11-28 Thread Jacob Maher
I found this bug after trying to swap to GDM on ubuntu 15.10. I have overcome
it thanks to people working through this.
It seems that whatever the `ubuntu-gnome-default-settings` package does seems
to help also un-comment-ing `WaylandEnable=false` in /etc/gdm/custom.conf is
what needs to be done about it

The latter may only be because I use NVIDIA proprietary drivers

[Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode

2014-07-06 Thread Jacob Godserv
This is a very difficult issue because it amounts to a fairly major
feature change underneath. Every access has to be wrapped by a
permissions check, followed by an authentication. Someone tried to patch
this into the file manager a while back, but the patch never got
approved.

The real bug is the GNOME bug. That's where most of the work happens,
and that's where this bug has been prioritized out of scope for years.

[Bug 1295914] [NEW] Setting disable-while-typing from touchpad settings has no effect

Public bug reported:

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to ctrl+shift

2013-10-07 Thread Jacob Popov
I confirm the bug with the current Saucy.
Using gnome-tweak-tool makes the keyboard switched using XKB, which isn't quite
good. Currently Ubuntu relies on iBus, if i'm not mistaken? Therefore the
gnome-tweak-tool workaround is not OK, as the indicator doesn't notice any
layout changes then.

Which is more, after the yesterday's update I cannot change the layout
even with Super+Space any more! No reasonable working hotkey left! So
far I'm sticking to Shift+Alt and ignore the indicator.

By the way, why using the indicator which doesn't work?
1) Layout switching in the command-line interface is done ONLY with XKB! We
should somehow keep the layout changing hotkeys in XKB similar to the ones used
in GUI, shouldn't we?
2) For now, XKB works fine, while the indicator fails. Maybe the indicator
should rely on XKB, or at least track the layout change in XKB?

[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10

2013-10-07 Thread Jacob Popov
Dima, your patch works but partially.

It works fine if I switch layout with XKB hotkey.
However, it doesn't work if I switch using the indicator (which utilises iBus,
I presume?).

Steps to reproduce:
1) Launch LO:Writer.
2) Enter some text
3) Try to cut it with Ctrl+X and paste with Ctrl+V (or undo with Ctrl+Z).
4) Change the layout using Alt+Shift and repeat no.3. Works fine.
5) Change the layout using the indicator and mouse and repeat no.3 again. No
luck. :-(

reason lurks somewhere else. The patches from that thread seem to do

2013-01-12 Thread Jacob Oursland
Public bug reported:

System Configuration:
Operating System: Ubuntu 12.10
Package: gnome-terminal 3.6.0-0ubuntu1.

Steps to reproduce:
1. start gnome-terminal
2. execute emacs -nw to start emacs in terminal mode
3. type Ctrl-. (Control-Period)

the terminal. (Assuming the tester has not bound this key.)

Actual behavior:
1. Emacs receives .
2. Emacs inserts a period into the text buffer.

Other notes:
1. xterm correctly passes Ctrl-. through to Emacs.
2. This bug affects other keycodes such as Ctrl-; and Ctrl-,

[Bug 1096144] [NEW] gedit crashes with syntax highlighting of Defaults

[Bug 694910] Re: Regression: patch to bug 539477 breaks Super+P keybindings

2012-10-02 Thread Jacob Winski
Why is this not fixed if all it takes is to remove a horribly written
patch?

Precise 12.04 still has this behaviour.

Basically, right now there are only two very ugly fixes: either turn off
xrandr support or media-keys. The first is unacceptable if you use
multiple monitors (me) and the second if you use media keys (me). So
someone that needs both (me) has a big problem.

This forced shortcut caused me a ton of troubles and wasted time. Just
because there is broken hardware out there does not mean you should
force a broken fix down everyone's throat.

Please someone revert this horrible patch.

In case someone wants to know how to disable xrandr | media keys:
1) install dconf-editor
2) uncheck activate in org - gnome - settings-daemon - plugins -
media-keys | xrandr

[Bug 854833] Re: NetworkManager forgets wireless password

2012-07-05 Thread Jacob Nevins
Is this still a problem in Precise?

On Precise, I'm seeing a problems that look like at least some of the reports
here (and also bug #877803, which looks very similar but isn't yet linked).
Here's a verbose me too; the salient features are:
* After a WiFi connection has been dropped or had trouble connecting due to
marginal signal, Network Manager forgets the password.
** This can happen pretty frequently when I connect to a network at the edge of
its range.
** (I'd independently formulated a theory similar to one in bug #877803, that
NM should only update the keyring after successfully authenticating to the
wireless network. I haven't checked for basis in fact though.)
* Once this has happened, NM never remembers a passphrase entered to connect to
a network, even if authentication is then successful. Going into Edit
Connections and entering the passphrase there causes it to be remembered
(until the next time there's a connection problem).
* I don't have available to all users checked for the connection.
** This is deliberate; I want the wireless credentials stored in the
(encrypted) home directory, rather than on the root filesystem. So the
workaround given isn't useful for me.

This all matches symptoms reported previously.

This is quite annoying. If there's any other information I can provide
to help get this fixed, please shout.

[Bug 941229] [NEW] deadlock: GStreamer-WARNING **: wrong STREAM_LOCK count 0

2012-02-25 Thread Jacob Peddicord
Public bug reported:

Banshee and Totem both suffer from a very annoying bug where they will
lock up when trying to interact with them while media is playing. It's
hard to describe, but here are the main points:

* When the application locks up, GStreamer-WARNING **: wrong STREAM_LOCK count
0 is output.
* I have tested this with quite a diverse MP3 library.
* This happens **most frequently** using gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3.
* This happens less frequently when using lame/mad from
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly.
* I am unable to reproduce this issue with OGG/Vorbis audio.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3, as it is easiest to trigger the bug
(works with gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly as well, just not as often).
2. Open any MP3 in Totem from the terminal.
3. Seek madly for 5-10 seconds or until it freezes. (Sometimes the freeze is
instantaneous, sometimes it takes a few seconds of trying.)
4. Observe the GStreamer warning message and deadlock.

This has been *very* difficult to pin down, as it happens seemingly at
random. I'm attaching a backtrace of Totem's state during the freeze.
Some points of note:

* The GStreamer-CRITICAL message is unrelated to the freezing from what I can
tell, as it doesn't show up during other traces I've done.
* ^C is where it froze.
* #10 is libgstflump3dec.so -- could not find debugging symbols for this, but
as it happens with the other MP3 decoders as well, I don't think the problem
lies in the MP3 plugins themselves.

Something I've noticed while testing this: it appears to freeze more often
around when threads are created/destroyed.
Let me know if there's any more information I can provide.

I've not been able to reproduce it. I don't know what happened when I moved

Maybe I tried to move it outside the application or in to the menu bar at
above the contacts area.

[Bug 35048] Re: Hotkeys don't work anymore

2011-10-25 Thread Jacob Holt
i have this problem too.
Ubuntu version - 11.10
keyboard set to UK
There are 9 hotkeys across top of keyboard, only web, mail and search buttons
work.
If I try and add extra shortcut for say, help, it shows press shortcut key but
does not respond to pressing the hotkey with the '?'
The Internet, Email and Search Shortcuts work this way though, even though they
were set automatically.
