[Bug 1724037] Re: Allow GNOME fractional scaling below 100%

2024-02-13 Thread James Lewis
@darkdragon-001 by way of an update, I re-tried this on 24.04
(development) as of this date, using Gnome 45.3, on Wayland and it
worked.

It's quite uncanny to see 2400x1600 rendered on a 2160x1440 screen, but
it worked with the exception of a couple of apps that were blew up
spectacularly, including OBS, and Slack... otherwise... everything else
worked fine, and at the scaling factor above (90%), things seemed quite
usable... it looked a little like an old CRT that was being pushed a
little hard, but for certain applications this could be awesome.

I wish the UI in gnome would offer the ability to be more granular than
just 25% increments, and also go below 100%, perhaps with a warning, or
from within Gnome Tweaks.

[Bug 1724037] Re: Allow GNOME fractional scaling below 100%

2022-09-01 Thread James Lewis
I am not certain why fractional scaling below 100% would cause any
different performance issues than fractional scaling above 100%, but it
is certainly something that I have wanted for a long time sometimes
the fact that it would cause some blurring as the image would be scaled
to contain more pixels than the display... is not a problem.

Please do consider allowing this if it is possible, even if it is not
directly exposed to the user on most distros, accessing it through
gnome-tweaks or dconf would be fine.

[Bug 1894234] [NEW] Bluetooth not working with Gnome in Groovy (20.10)

2020-09-04 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Having plugged in a USB bluetooth dongle, the gnome-bluetooth settiogs
report that I have no bluetooth adapter, and I should plug one in.

At the same time, I can see the bluetooth adapter with hciconfig, and in
fact, I can pair with remote bluetooth devices using a 3rd party
bluetooth manager (blueman).

Obviously this is not ideal, as it is not fully integrated with gnome,
sound devices are not fully available etc..

I'm not sure what else I can provide, but:-

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1528915 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1528915

I understand that it's not you specifically, and I apologise that I did
not find the earlier duplicate... the search did not find it, although
to be fair it is more than 2 years old, and logged against a respin...
which makes me think it's a hopeless cause like many other issues,
how likely is a duplicate of a 2 year old issue in the gnome respin ever
likely to be considered again?

I cannot deny that the work done to make Gnome 3 acceptable to regular
Ubuntu users over the last few months has been nothing more than
incredible, but I can't help but think it shouldn't have been necessary.

[Bug 1730195] Re: Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
You know... I thought things might have changed, if those working on the
project don't like something, but can't get it changed, what hope do I
have?? Why mark this bug as invalid if you agree that it's a problem.

Canonical's customers do not understand the shifting relationships
between different components of the distribution, let alone what this
new relationship with upstream gnome means... I have no idea where else
to report such a thing.

So, be it, I have reported it, Canonical doesn't care, end of story...
just like almost every other bug I've ever reported. I wonder why I
bother.

[Bug 1730195] [NEW] Launcher transparrency is applied to the top bar, invisible icons.

2017-11-05 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

The new launcher in Ubuntu 17.10's gnome-shell setup has auto
transparency... but this is also applied to the top bar, which it was
not in Unity.

As a result, using a light background makes the light icons in the bar
almost invisible.

The top bar transparency should not be linked to the launcher, and
probably there should not be transparrency on the top bar.

It would also be nice if there was a slider to control the level of
transparrency in the launcher.

See attached image of near invisible icons.

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications with WM_WINDOW_ROLE or window title set

2016-10-26 Thread James Lewis
This is perhaps a perfect example of the issue many people have, and
which people I've converted to Ubuntu complain about (to me), on a
regular basis...

Reading the history of this bug, it seems that a consensus was reached
on the correct solution, in 2010, but we are fast approaching 2017 and
nothing has changed.

Hopefully Unity8 will address some of these issues, and render this 10
year old bug finally resolved by virtue of being obsolete.

[Bug 1441241] Re: Ubuntu Nexus 4 does not detect location

2015-04-14 Thread James Lewis
This does appear to work for me, but after soem experimentation with
another Nexus 4 user, it seems that it's very weak... the phone fails to

don't know how much of the GPS system is implemented in Software vs how
much is in hardware... I'm told the GPS on the Nexus 4 is good under

I have the same issue, seen in the video here:-

Other applications can record using pulseaudio, I regularly use
pulseaudio to manage 4 or 5 possible input sources and several outputs
depending on the application. This appears to be an issue specifically
with Sound Recorder. I have verified it on 2 machines now.

[Bug 1051448] [NEW] Empathy cannot correctly use IPv6 Local Link addressing.

[Bug 372608] Re: import failure: Invalid file format

2012-04-12 Thread James Lewis
This is reported fixed in the upstream bug tracker, but currently
seahorse 3.4 has not landed in 12.04, I know some Gnome 3.4 applications
are making it into the LTS but it's not clear if this will happen for
seahorse before release, if anyone has more info on the status of that
it might help here.

I'll try to replicate this in 12.04 but if anyone else can confirm if
they still see this issue with the version in 12.04.

[Bug 372608] Re: import failure: Invalid file format

2012-04-12 Thread James Lewis
I can confirm that I was successfully able to import an ssh key using
seahorse, I got a segfault as documented in this bug:-

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=751515

But my key was imported successfully on 12.04.

So... half way there... now we just need to do it without crashing. ;)

[Bug 980035] [NEW] seahorse crashes when importing an SSH key. (Assertion Failed/Segfault)

2012-04-12 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

While trying to verify if this bug is now fixed, so that it can be
closed:-

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/372608

I am seeing that infact, the bug above appears to be resolved...
although now it crashes moments after successfully importing a key, this
bug is apparently also tracked by redhat here:-

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=751515

The bug I was originally looking at states that a lot of the import code
was re-written for seahorse 3.4, so perhaps the solution to this is to
ask why seahorse is not one of those apps which have been/can be rolled
forward in 12.04.

[Bug 220654] Re: file-roller will not open 256 AES zip files

2012-01-23 Thread James Lewis
I would say that any normal user would just /assume/ that these files
were not support and revert to Windows for this task... I found this bug
after doing just that in Oneiric. I don't think it's reasonable to
close it just becuase you can install a different backend and have it
work... it may not be a bug in file-roller (other than that it does not
advise the user of options), but perhaps in the distribution planning
etc.

Clearly closing this bug without addressing it has lead to the problem
being present for 2 full cycles of LTS, and AES zip files are now much
more common.

Perhaps this can be moved to papercuts?

[Bug 891996] Re: Message preview window frozen on Evolution startup

2011-12-05 Thread James Lewis
I'm seeing this in a fresh 11.10 install, and I've also seen it happen
in Fedora. It's almost as if it thinks the message has been displayed
when infact it has not. The message is also not displayed in a new
window. This is a real shame, because in virtually every way, Evolution
is the superior client.

I wonder if it is related to the IMAP server, I'm running with dbmail
2.2.17 at the server end.

It's also worth noting that not all messages are affected, and not the

after the client was running (possibly after it was installed?) are ok,
but this may be speculation.

[Bug 381587] Re: You can not select audio hardware in Empathy for sip/ekiga calls

2011-03-04 Thread James Lewis
I just tried to find a way to achieve this in Natty, and I can't... I
have an on-board sound card connected to speakers, and a separate USB
headset used for Skype/SIP and various other VoIP software like
Mumble... You can change the input device for an application once it's
running using Pulse Audio Volume Control, (but not sound preferences)...
and you can change the default input and output device for the system in
the gnome preferences... but not on a per application basis.

There really needs to be a way to do it in Empathy, and if I'm not
understanding what is required to have Empathy open automatically when I
log on, ring on the speaker, and have the VoIP call on the headset...
then the UI needs to be improved but I'm fairly sure there is no way
to do it.

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set

2010-12-09 Thread James Lewis
OK, so that's the answer then isn't it... have whatever library is
involved return a warning if WM_WINDOW_ROLE is not set, and then
implement it in the window manager if that value is set... It's not
unreasonable for the application to be required to do that kind of
thing... But I think it probably is unreasonable for every application
to have to implement a different way to store the location and restore
it itself tho.

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set

2010-12-09 Thread James Lewis
I'm sure that Denny will have input here, and I'm concious that this
question sounds a little like a trap to point out where I have
overlooked the reason this would be a problem.

So, lets start from first principles...

The thing that this thread contends is that each application should not
have to independently implement a window location management function
itself. This would waste resources, never be fully implemented and
would be inconsistent in it's behaviour as well as not globally
configurable. It does not I believe, contend that this should happen by
magic without any kind of co-operation from the app. If that co-
operation needs to be the setting of a parameter (WM_WINDOW_ROLE) which
would identify that window so that the window manager could have a
reliable point of reference.

Firstly, I would suggest that in the window manager configuration...
there should be an option which might be labeled Window positioning
policy... ( Right next to the click to raise button which has been
missing for years now :p )

After that, when the last window of a given role is closed, the window
manager would store it's dimensions and location, probably in gconf,
although I don't know if there is an abstracted API for storing data
which might work with KDE or other environments also. Then when the
first window of that type is subsequently opened, perhaps after a
reboot... it should be opened with the same dimensions and location as
the last one to be closed. (i1f the screen resolution, or number of
screens is no-longer the same such that the window no-longer fits on the
screen, it should revert to dynamic positioning)

I would suggest that other people might like to comment on what the
correct behaviour for subsequent windows of the same type which are
opened before the first is closed, but I believe that it should be of
the same dimensions, and it should be positioned somewhat near, but
offset from the original, on the same screen.

~James

[Bug 641850] [NEW] Nautilus leaks large amounts of memory

2010-09-18 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I leave my Maverick test box on overnight, I find that nautilus has taken
over so much memory by the morning that the machine is virtually
unresponsive... here it has almost 1 Gig resident, and another 750 megs in swap
space...

My usage of Nautilus other than the basic operation of the desktop does
include connecting to a SSH/SFTP server on the network, and occasionally
moving some large files back and forth... but otherwise nothing unusual,
and at the time the memory was leaked, I was not at the computer at
all... (Although the network drive was still connected, so I don't know
if this is related)...

[Bug 424864] Re: Video colors appear inverted

2010-09-16 Thread James Lewis
When I initially logged this problem it was caused when you upgraded,
rather than did a fresh install Clearly it is related to a
configuration parameter which is held over from an older version of
Totem. Can I ask anyone who has this problem to either create a new
user which has not existed before, and test Totem when logged in with
that username, or to close totem, delete/move aside their
.gconf/apps/totem folder and test.

Hopefully this will show that when totem starts with no-pre existing
configuration this problem does not happen.

Note that you may need to reboot or re-start X to reset the initial
state before testing otherwise your result may be a false positive.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-07-23 Thread James Lewis
I can't say that I initially liked the buttons on the left... and it
irritated me that I couldn't move them back, however thanks to this
thread I know how to move them, and knowing that I can... I haven't...
I think that's a worthwhile lesson TBH, force a change and it will upset
people, but if they have the option to change it back, 99% of people
won't.

At the moment, it does look a bit illogical... but as I understand it,
the remaining section of the title bar will be used for something
else... so probably the jury is still out on if the eventual outcome
will be good... I'm betting it will be.

As for the previous poster suggesting that this is the reason to move to
another distribution... IMO, that's ridiculous... Ubuntu has clearly
made huge strides in the last few releases and 10.04 is no different...
if you don't like the window controls on the left, move them back to the
right and chill!

IMO, we should spend more time worrying about getting BTRFS in, and
personally I'd like to see a GUI to manage LUKS encrypted volumes
files... so we can steer people away from truecrypt, rather than
spending so much effort debating such a simple change as if some buttons
are on the left or the right.

[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications

2010-06-24 Thread James Lewis
This is definitely expected behaviour for Windows users... but although
I agree that it is somthing which should be addressed... I use a more
cluttered approach to managing desktop windows, and I much prefer the
current behavior of placing a new window in the least occupied area of
the screen... so as to minimize overlap.

If this feature is added, (And I think it should be). it should be
an option which is configurable.

[Bug 555400] Re: Totem crashes when presented with a looping file

2010-04-04 Thread James Lewis
Correction, this may have a different cause... I just tested with a
small application called yauap which is very simple and also relies on
gstreamer, it played ok a week or two ago, but is now causing a
segfault... it seems that an update (of gstreamer?) has caused a
problem.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-24 Thread James Lewis
I found the change to be un-desirable, not because I don't like it...
but for 2 reasons.

1. When it happened, it broke the menu button and I only had maximise, minimise
and close.
I hope this will not happen in the final release.

2. When it happened, because it didn't work correctly I was looking for how
change the setting, and there was no way to do it...
I think that if this was a configurable change it would be far less of a
problem.

Once I knew how to change it (and fix the menu button) I decided that I
quite liked the change and decided to leave it but I would still
have been aggrieved if I was unable to choose

[Bug 533566] Re: [Lucid] Window controls are on the left side after update

2010-03-20 Thread James Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 532633 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633

The ability to move the controls to the left may be desirable, but I now
can't see a way to access the window controls that were previously on
the left Eg. Always on top... etc.

The current situation is a usability bug, even if it is deliberate,
since these additional controls are now unaccessible... ideally it
should be configurable by the theme, but it should not be left as it is
because some of the window controls are now inaccessible.

[Bug 510529] Re: When replying to a mail in evolution, the message is flagged as edited before any changes are made.

2010-01-21 Thread James Lewis
If the user wants to do that, they could click save as draft, and then
close the message in the same number of clicks... this would be a
positive action rather than relying on the client to remind them of
somthing they have forgotten.

If no changes are made between when the window is opened, and when it is
closed, i don't believe that it should delay the close with a dialog
which is primarily asking if you want to discard your changes.

I hope Canonical can nudge the upstream on this, since it has been
outstanding since 2001 Seems like a simple UI feature, rather than
actual functionality too...

I hope we don't get to the point where such a simple, and frankly
obvious request can take 10 years to be adopted.

[Bug 438219] [NEW] Sound Preferences unexpectedly changes output device of applications.

2009-09-28 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

In the new sound preferences dialog, sound gets un-intentionally shifted
from one device to another... if one could do this deliberately it would
be cool... but this scenario is causing problems.

I have an onboard sound card, and a USB headset. To change the base
volume of the headset, I have to open the sound preferences, go to the
output tab, change the selected device to the USB headset, and adjust
the volume. Unfortunately, when I do this, the system sounds are moved
to the headset. I go back to the sound preferences and change it back
to the onboard sound device, and then my VoIP application is moved to
the speakers.

I then have to close, and re-open the voip app...

It seems like this is a bug... but along the same line, it would be
really nice if the applicaitons in the applications tab could somehow be
set to always use a particular device if it is available regardless...

Unrelated, but I also would like to see the input tab show virtual
devices such as for recording mixed output.

[Bug 424859] [NEW] Podcasts in Rhythmbox report bogus errors in Karmic Alpha 5

2009-09-05 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Running some tests with Karmic, and I noticed that Rhythmbox now says
that a number of my podcasts are failing, but it appears this is wrong.
This is 0.12.4 from Karmic updated to 5 Sep 2009.

[Bug 391533] Re: Application windows do not restore to last known position.

2009-06-25 Thread James Lewis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 124315 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315

This may not be entirely within the window manager space, some
involvement with the toolkit may be required too... I do believe this is
a genuine problem, and by passing the buck and saying that it is
simply the applications issue, you are making yourself part of the
problem as described by Denny.

The window manager currently has a set of placement algorithms which put
windows in logical places on screen... however, Windows has solved this
problem with a solution which works very well (better??) in a specific
set of circumstances... I would not like to see every window
automatically placed where it was before, but it would be a great option
to have for certain classes of window (possibly needs an extra flag from
the app via the toolkit?)..

For example, within an application, opening a particular dialog
repeatedly, you would want the window to be placed the same way each
time... certain apps might do well to be restored to wherever they were
when they were last used...

I really believe that this is NOT wholly the responsibility of the app,
or any individual layer... but it would be good to have a framework for
the app to specify how placement of a window should be handled, to allow
this kind of functionality to become standard.

[Bug 367743] [NEW] Attempt to purchase album from Rhythmbox Magnatune store fails.

2009-04-27 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When selecting the Purchase Album option in Rhythmbox, an error dialog
is displayed which reads:-

Error
An error occurred while trying to purchase the album.
The error text is:
'module' object has no attribute 'split'

This was observed in UNR 9.04.

I'm reluctant to try different permutations, as this involves a credit
card transaction, but for that very reason I think it should be
investigated, and fed back to the plugin author as a matter of urgency,
because apps shipped with Ubuntu which process credit card transactions
should work... it gives a much worse impression when this type of
process fails than others.

[Bug 367743] Re: Attempt to purchase album from Rhythmbox Magnatune store fails.

2009-04-27 Thread James Lewis
See attachment, for xsession_errors, and debug output, I trimmed the
debug output to just the lines after I started playing a track (before
selecting purchase), until I OK'd the error, and quit rhythmbox. The
shutdown messages are very large, so I trimmed messages after rhythmbox
started to quit.

Note, I also changed the cardholder details in the debug output...
although from what I can see it didn't output anything it should not
have done.

From what I can see, there isn't anything terribly significan't in these
logs, unless it's significant by it's absence compared to your working
version, are you testing on on a full version of Ubuntu, as this is the
netbook remix. I will test on a full release when I get a machine I can
do it on..

[Bug 276603] Re: crashed while listening to a mp3 podcast

2009-01-08 Thread James Lewis
Thanks for the comment regarding installing build dependencies... not
really an Ubuntu/Debian user primarily, but I have to say that I've
tried a lot of distributions, and Ubuntu is the first that has kept me
away from Slack, and I'm really impressed with the way Ubuntu has made a
well built distribution and managed to make it user friendly enough for
casual computer users at the same time... As of the last few patches,
I'm really thinking that 9.04 will be outstanding, just need to make
people aware of it and Linux can overtake MAC on the desktop... :)

In any case, the patch posted above by petski does resolve the issue
with podcast downloads causing segfault, so this seems to be a big step
forwards, thanks very much for doing this!

I have to say that there is still a minor issue with the file lists
stopping updating and being corrupted when scrolling if they are open
when it downloads more than 1 podcast, but that is a minor irritation
rather than a show stopper, because usually you'd never have this screen
open for an extended period would anyone be interested in a
screenshot of what I mean?... is this somthing that should have a
separate (and far less critical) bug listed?

[Bug 276603] Re: crashed while listening to a mp3 podcast

2008-12-18 Thread James Lewis
Hmm, doesn't seem that that can easily be done on a vanilla install, I
get Build dependencies could not be satisfied...

I'd be surprised if this isn't considered worth releasing as an
update... it's the default music player in the distro, so it's easily in
the top 5 or 10 applications used on the end user desktop, and this bug
basically makes podcasts completely unusable!

Can it really be OK to wait 4 months for 9.04?

[Bug 225615] Re: Heavy memory leak in gvfsd-http

2008-12-16 Thread James Lewis
I am seeing this problem also, and I can't keep rhythmbox running for
more than a few minutes... as it has a queue of podcasts waiting to
download and it just reports segmentation fault with no other error, I
have an strace of that.

I don't know if these issues are related, but it seems that a lot of
people are reporting issues with this, associated with rhythmbox and
podcast downloads... mabe this will help.

[Bug 297086] Re: Rhythmbox crashes after downloading a podcast

2008-12-16 Thread James Lewis
I have the same problem, in 8.10 with 0.11.6 (64 bit), I can download
podcasts for 2 or 3 minutes, then segfault, I have attached an strace
output incase this will help. it seems to be related to an issue
with gvfsd-http which is found to be using almost 2Gb of memory after a
few tries That seems to have been reported separately as bug 225615
with people reporting that it occurs when downloading podcasts...

[Bug 249873] [NEW] podcasts containing non-audio files handled badly

2008-07-18 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Several of the RSS podcast feeds I listen to, periodically include a
video, or pdf file rather than an MP3... Rhythmbox downloads the file,
and then says that it failed, I like the fact that it downloads the
file, becuase I can see it and watch, or read as required, infact when I
sync to my portable player, it can handle both PDF, and video files, so
the behaviour is actually good.

The problem I see is that these files are shown to have failed to
download, and cannot be played from within rhythmbox It would be
very useful if rhythmbox could show the files having been downloaded,
and possibly show that they are non-audio ideally, attempting to
play them would spawn an external player, but simply indicating that the
file was infact downloaded, but cannot be played would be a great
improvement over simply saying Failed, because retrying will cause the
file to be downloaded again, creating a duplicate.

This is on 8.04 with rhythmbox 0.11.5

[Bug 223537] Re: Last.fm plugin cannot report back to last.fm (scrobbing) .. even tho status says OK.

If I download the client from last.fm it works ok... I don't
understand how this can be an issue with the service rather than the
client.

[Bug 223537] [NEW] Last.fm plugin cannot report back to last.fm (scrobbing) .. even tho status says OK.

2008-04-28 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Similar to #215273, but I can play music from 'last.fm', I just cannot
use the Love/Ban buttons etc... after you press the Love or Ban
button you get Connecting in the status bar at the bottom right, and
those buttons are then greyed out indefinitely.

This was observed in Hardy, i386, on a Lenovo T61 laptop.. I did a
google search, and it seems there's at least one thread talking about
this problem.
