[Bug 1870794] Re: Update for Unicode 13

2020-10-05 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The Emoji font was updated for Ubuntu 20.10 which will be released later
this month.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-noto-color-emoji/0~20200916-1

Someone might backport this update to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. To get full support for
new emoji "sequences", this will also need to be backported:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pango/-/merge_requests/174

It's probably worth grabbing this commit too:

[Bug 1871791] [NEW] Update to Unicode 12.1 release

2020-04-09 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Google has released a new version of their Noto Emoji font.

I don't believe this requires a freeze exception since we should do
these updates if possible so that emoji display correctly in Ubuntu.

For more details, see
https://blog.emojipedia.org/google-march-2020-pixel-feature-drop-emoji-changelog/

If we don't take this particular update, the biggest downside will be
that emojis show up as separate parts. For example, the gender neutral
health care worker will appear as two characters (adult and the medical
symbol) instead of as a single character.

https://emojipedia.org/health-worker/

However, we will also need an updated Pango for those new combined emoji
to display as a single emoji in apps using Pango (such as GTK apps).

** Description changed:

Please update to gnome-terminal 3.34.1 (or .2) for eoan.

Or, at least, cherry-pick this trivial fix:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
  terminal/commit/2cbc9e6b9be7f4d6b2d92b40e37ec687d36ce98d

A change in GTK triggered a bug in Terminal causing a pretty bad user
experience. A fullscreened terminal under Wayland doesn't retain its
fullscreen status at certain operations, such as opening/closing a
second tab, or zooming. Opening a second tab actually further grows the
window as the tab bar appears, so that the bottom 1 or 2 text rows
  become invisible (out of screen).

This issue was fixed in 3.34.1, along with two other minor issues and
many translation updates. 3.34.2 brings another translation update only.

Ubuntu usually aims to ship GNOME x.y.1. I assume there was no
particular reason for not updating GNOME Terminal to .1 in this cycle,
other than probably lack of time. I sincerely hope that the
aforementioned UX regression convinces you to release a last minute fix
for 19.10, or an update shortly afterwards. Thanks a lot!

[Bug 1718850] Re: Mode extensions appear off by default

2019-10-12 Thread Jeremy Bicha
This is fixed in GNOME Shell directly (try running the gnome-shell-
extension-prefs tool) in Ubuntu 19.10 which will be released in a few
days.

GNOME Tweaks still needs to be updated to do the same thing GNOME Shell
does.

[Bug 1846871] Re: Desktop Icons NG shell extension breaks Activities vew

2019-10-05 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The extension ID is supposed to be unique. It is a serious bug if NG is
using the same extension ID as an existing extension. I imagine the
maintainers of extensions.gnome.org would remove an extension for that
issue if it was reported. Until that bug is fixed, I don't think Ubuntu
has any responsibility to attempt to block the broken extension.

[Bug 1846871] Re: Desktop Icons NG shell extension breaks Activities vew

2019-10-05 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Does this bug affect the vanilla GNOME session or only the Ubuntu
session?

If it only affects the Ubuntu session, it is probably just a
compatibility problem between Ubuntu's desktop icons extension and the
"NG" extension.

Since the "NG" extension is newer, I think it's appropriate for the "NG"
extension to not break systems where the official desktop icons
extension is already installed. Please report this issue to the NG
developers.

[Bug 1815504] Re: Coordinate Yaru sound theme with GNOME 3.32 Alert Sound feature

2019-02-12 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I looked into this a bit and the feature worked differently than I
thought.

If you pick one of the 4 choices, it creates a __custom theme in
~/.local/share/sounds/ (derived from Yaru if Yaru is your selected sound
theme) with just the alert sounds overriden.

GNOME is looking for help in perhaps updating the the event sound
choices here so there is room for Yaru contibutors to help there.

In Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, in the Settings app, on the Power panel, there is a
Blank Screen option that you can set to Never. That prevents the
screensaver from being enabled. On that same page, you'll also want to
make sure that Automatic Suspend is turned off.

[Bug 1813813] [NEW] rhythmbox zeitgeist plugin is broken

2019-01-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

I have heard reports that the rhythmbox zeitgeist plugin is broken.

It may need to be ported to Python3 since other parts of Rhythmbox (like
the Alternative Toolbar) are already using Python3.

If it does use Python2, then it probably needs to depend on
libpeas-1.0-python2loader

If the Zeitgeist plugin is not fixed, it will eventually need to be
removed from Ubuntu. (We can add it back if it's working again as long
as Zeitgeist is still around.)

 Status: Confirmed

[Bug 1813591] Re: pygobject ftbfs in 18.04 LTS

2019-01-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

+ Impact
+ --
+ pygobject doesn't build from source which means someone would need to fix
that problem before fixing any bugs in the pygobject package for Ubuntu 18.04
LTS.
+
+ Test Case
+ -
+ Does pygobject build successfully?
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ pygobject 3.28 is the intended version to match glib 2.56 but it missed the
deadline for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. So this fix is cherry-picking a small commit to
fix the build tests with 18.04's glib2.0 2.56.
+
+ The only change that is made in this upload is to the tests. There

[Bug 1771031] Re: Please remove libgnome and friends from Ubuntu

2019-01-20 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

libgnome has been removed from Debian Testing and will not be included
in the Debian 10 "Buster" release. We should do the same. If we do it
now, maybe some projects will do the needed porting work away from
libgnome (porting to gtk3 is probably needed) in time for Ubuntu 20.04
LTS or Debian 10. Users who are hurt by these removals can keep using
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS for a few years.

resapplet and winefish are unmaintained and aren't in Debian.

linsmith is in Debian and will be either ported to gtk3 or removed
eventually, but I don't think Ubuntu needs to wait for that.

This bug depends on these other removals:
- gnome-python LP: #1739800

[Bug 1812378] Re: Search provider of gnome-terminal does not work in gnome-shell

2019-01-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I believe the Terminal search provider only allows searching the titles
of open terminals and command line prompts and maybe a bit more.

It is not a generic tool to search for command-line utilities like top.

Therefore, I am closing this bug.

[Bug 1811900] Re: SRU 3.28 latest git to bionic

Amr, we have tried that, but it doesn't look like upstream will commit

willing to let the Ubuntu developers handle the 3.28.4 release.

[Bug 1812143] Re: gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.31 breaks mutter 3.30

2019-01-16 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

We need to package mutter 3.31 and add a Breaks: mutter < 3.31 to
  gsettings-desktop-schemas.

Running gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.31 with mutter 3.30 will result in
  gdm/gnome-shell being unable to start.

Also, ukwm is a fork of mutter so the Kylin devs need to backport the
  relevant commits from mutter.

  The problematic gsettings commit was:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettings-desktop-schemas/commit/c7eee129c

I think the mutter commits can be found at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/merge_requests/133
+
+ We could easily add a dummy key with the old name but I'm thinking the
+ way forward is just to package the newer mutter.
