Fixed for me in new webkit released to 14.04. Anyone else having the
trouble in 14.04 LTS or utopic?

[Bug 1142947] Re: webkit--epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-04-12 Thread John S. Gruber
Thanks, Brian, for looking at this and offering to look at it again
before Raring release.

I'm sure you are right that not many people are presently affected--
firefox is widely used and chromium-browser uses its own Javascript
engine. For those using straight webkit I think only the i386
architecture doesn't use the Low Level Interpreter and therefore only it
is affected. If the LLINT is enabled the present code already creates
the structure in the DFG::ShouldProfile case. (See line 811 of
Source/JavaScriptCore/jit/JIT.cpp. for where the situation is
categorized).

I'm maintaining Lernid and the current Lernid and from the current
classes I'd say Lernid isn't used with youtube often (if at all).
However I have readied a release for support of ubuntuonair which uses
hangouts, and therefore youtube. The first time I tested it I got this
crash. I can't release Lernid with this bug outstanding in the soon-to-
be current Ubuntu release. I gather this release is also in quantal-
proposed.

Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/lernid/+bug/1130454 filed by an
ubuntuonair organizer and Liz from the Ubuntu classroom team. The
blueprint is at https://blueprints.launchpad.net/lernid/+spec/support-
ubuntu-onair .

I believe this problem will be resolved when upstream releases r144137
for gtk. It makes the relevant test include the additional alternative,
if I read it correctly. It's too complex for me to feel comfortible
proposing for cherry picking.

I've added the patch headers you've requested and hope that they are
alright.

[Bug 1142947] Re: epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-03-07 Thread John S. Gruber
** Description changed:

- Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a
- minute. After restarting the browser it crashed again with another
- random video off youtube in less than 10 seconds.
+ Crash on browsing watching youtube video from http://ubuntuonair.com.
Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a minute.
After restarting the browser it crashed again with another random video off
youtube in less than 10 seconds. It appears to matter which video, or has
another intermittent effect.The last failing
+ video I've found is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir2TdfSwH8g.

- Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--all webkit
+ Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--both also webkit
  browsers.

Running today's live i386 CD from raring. (Today == 2013-3-3).

No flash installed and therefore I assume that it is using html 5.
Running flash in lernid and midori avoids the problem as webkit seems to
use it in preference to html5--but that's just my guess.

  To reproduce:

  Install raring
  **Don't install flash**
Install ephiphany with 'sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser'
- Start epiphany from the terminal with epiphany http://ubuntuonair.com/#video;
+ Start epiphany from the terminal with epiphany
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir2TdfSwH8g
Start the video and wait for the video to stop (coincident with the halt in
the video within a minute).

[Bug 1142947] Re: epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-03-07 Thread John S. Gruber
Debdiff with the patch from webkit upstream Filip Pizlo. See the webkit
bug above. Before the patch was applied I could often trigger the
segfault. After applying it to my system the problem I was no longer
able to trigger the fault.

There is an i386 build in my ppa. The build log is at
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/133296050/buildlog_ubuntu-
raring-i386.webkit_1.10.2-0ubuntu2_UPLOADING.txt.gz . The PPA is
ppa:jsjgruber/ppa . The uploaded version is 1.10.2-0ubuntu2.

Neither lp: webkit nor lp:ubuntu/webkit appear to be up-to-date.

[Bug 1142947] [NEW] epiphany-browser crashed with SIGSEGV in Decoder()

2013-03-03 Thread John S. Gruber
Public bug reported:

Crash on browsing watching youtube video from http://ubuntuonair.com.
Expected it to play the whole hangout video but played less than a
minute. After restarting the browser it crashed again with another
random video off youtube in less than 10 seconds.

Also fails on lernid, which I'm testing, and midori--all webkit
browsers.

Running today's live i386 CD from raring. (Today == 2013-3-3).

No flash installed and therefore I assume that it is using html 5.

2012-08-21 Thread John S. Gruber
This signal has been moved in telepathy, but isn't, and almost certainly
won't be addressed in python-telepathy. Therefore it can't be fixed in
lernid.

[Bug 737679] Re: topics in rooms do not update or sometimes display

2012-02-25 Thread John S. Gruber
I cannot reproduce this problem in Empathy 3.3.5.

The problem appears to be addressed in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23151 in upstream
Telepathy, and corrected with
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658542 in Empathy. Marking as
such.

As lernid uses the older python bindings lacking the new interfaces
added in Telepathy, rather than using introspection to find to
Telepathy, it is tougher to fix there.

[Bug 737679] Re: topics in rooms do not update or sometimes display

2011-08-14 Thread John S. Gruber
The following signal is sent from telepathy-idle to empathy over the
dbus in Lucid, but not in Natty:

signal sender=:1.207 - dest=(null destination) serial=115
path=/org/freedesktop/Telepathy/Connection/idle/irc/John_5fS_5fGruber_40irc_2efreenode_2enet0x8eb5810/MucChannel1;
 interface=org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Properties; member=PropertiesChanged
   array [
  struct {
 uint32 8
 variant uint32 131726
  }
  struct {
 uint32 7
 variant string still another topic
  }
   ]

These represent the time the topic what changed and the new topic.

By the way, changes in moderation are also not reflected in a signal
with natty, either. They were in Lucid:

signal sender=:1.207 - dest=(null destination) serial=200
path=/org/freedesktop/Telepathy/Connection/idle/irc/John_5fS_5fGruber_40irc_2efreenode_2enet0x8eb5810/MucChannel1;
 interface=org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Properties; member=PropertiesChanged
   array [
  struct {
 uint32 3
 variant boolean true
  }
   ]

As I see it, the problem is that the PropertiesChanged signal, which
carries the topic (subject), moderation flag, and other channel
information, is no longer emitted on this interface for the channel
path. Thus empathy doesn't see that the change in topic has taken place.

When a room is joined empathy no doubt queries the channel Properties
and would therefore see the topic as of that instant.

[Bug 737679] Re: topics in rooms do not update or sometimes display

2011-08-14 Thread John S. Gruber
I'm able to circumvent this problem by reverting telepathy-glib commit
5894586c33dc082116049e4f136838d039285508 . See
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/telepathy/telepathy-
glib/commit/?id=5894586c33dc082116049e4f136838d039285508 . That commit
added another PropertiesChanged signal to the channel object, but on a
different interface (org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties, the one of
interest to us in on interface org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Properties).

The telepathy-glib package with this commit reverted (and api safeguards
for building disabled) is in one of my PPA's, ppa:jsjgruber/ppa

While I wouldn't recommend running this in production it may be useful
for testing to see it's this commit that's causing the problem for
Curtis or others.

[Bug 640096] Re: cpufreq using grey almost invisible font

2010-11-17 Thread John S. Gruber
@Martin:

Will this package be used in Natty given the switch to Unity?

In any case, the fix was merged into upstream lp:light-themes (see
comment in https://code.launchpad.net/~jsjgruber/ubuntu/maverick/light-
themes/light-themes.fix640096/+merge/37351) and to natty release . The
natty release diff from 0.1.8.2 to 0.1.8.4 includes the fix and its
changelog entry as 0.1.8.3. Version 0.1.8.4 is noted as being released
to natty main 11/11/11. See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-
themes

Is that what is needed? Is there anything else that we need to do to
move this along?

Thanks for your help.

A new version of the light-themes package with the fix I've proposed is
in my ppa, ppa:jsjgruber/ppa . Further information is about installing
software from private package archives at
https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/InstallingSoftware

If you have already added my ppa to your system sources you should
automatically be offered the update to the new version.

[Bug 640096] Re: cpufreq using grey almost invisible font

2010-10-01 Thread John S. Gruber
To reproduce this problem:
Choose the Ambiance Theme from System-Preferences-Appearance in the theme tag.
Right click on the top panel.
Choose Add to Panel...
Choose CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor
Click the Add Button
The Frequency isn't visible or is barely visible to the right of the icon
depending upon your monitor
Right Click and choose Preferences
Make sure the Appearance: item has Graphic and Text chosen
Click the Close button
Verify that the frequency still doesn't appear.

If you change themes you will see that the text color has enough
contrast to be easily visible.

Apparently like the fast-user-switch panel applet, the CPUFreq applet is
not being recognized as a panel applet by the theme. Thus colors are not
being applied to its text suitable for the dark background of the panel.
In fact the normal widget text color in use must be very close in color
to the panel background.

[Bug 615549] Re: gdm starting too early for DRM modules to load, no video

2010-09-22 Thread John S. Gruber
@Jamie

I think the fact that you haven't been getting VT1 starts confirms that
the /etc/init/gdm.conf fix is effective.

Those logs look like the ones you posted in comment #69 and comment #98
of bug #625239. You are running on a good virtual terminal rather than
VT1 or VT2 and you get just the header line of the backtrace--so they
don't look like the bug we were tracking here or there.

When I looked a couple of weeks ago I couldn't find any bug reports like
the ones you just posted, but I only looked for 15 minutes or so. You
may want to check yourself.

Do you remember if you are typing anything when they happen? Anything
else you can remember about the circumstances? You mentioned above a
resume, is that always or usually involved?

If you think you were only having the VT1 (VT2) problem before you first
reported the problem perhaps it would be worthwhile to check the changes
you were trying out around comment #69 to see if they were all reversed.
You were making changes to the grub configuration, if I recall.

Since we now know that your problem was related to the start of the
proprietary NVIDIA driver and since the new problem looks like a crash
in the same driver, you might be able to get relief from both by trying
to switch to a different driver. I'm no longer using an nvidia card
with my lucid system, but if I remember correctly I think you might
check either the System-Admin-Hardware Drivers to change drivers, or
perhaps you can switch drivers just by turning off all special effects
in the Appearance preference. The new driver name then would be
reflected in your xorg.0.log files.

If you decide to report this problem I'd suggest you use the ubuntu-bug
xorg command right after experiencing it to collect the logs the xorg
bug team like to see.

I'm sorry you are continuing to have problems.

[Bug 640096] Re: cpufreq using grey almost invisible font

2010-09-19 Thread John S. Gruber
Changing the System-Preference-Appearance theme from ambiance to
anything else eliminates the problem as the cpufreq applet seems to use
the window text color which seems to be rather dark. Other applets are
not drawing their text with the same color.

Running lucid version of gnome-applets does *not* clear up the problem.

Reverting to version 0.1.6.6 of light-themes (the theme for Ambiance)
does clear up the problem. The text color of the cpufreq applet does not
follow the window text color when it is installed and Ambiance is
selected.

[Bug 535316] Re: random garbage on TTY1

2010-03-10 Thread John S. Gruber
Thanks for your report, Noel.

I believe you are right about gdm. I think it's more probably about how/when
gdm gets started. I also believe you are seeing scan codes that are being sent
to X and that a getty/login session is also running on /dev/tty1 and is getting
confused.
In LP: #532047 the confusion may be between X and the plymouth daemon. Are you
seeing occasional crashes when pressing certain keys by any chance? If so that
might relate to LP: #529230.

If I'm correct your photo may help track these problems down. If I'm
wrong your report is even more helpful.

[Bug 97565] Re: location Gadsden AL after I save it defaults to Gadsden AZ

2008-05-01 Thread John S. Gruber
I can confirm InsClusoe's report. According to the US Board on
Geographic Names http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html there is
no Gadsden in Arkansas. Like InsClusoe, I assume that Pendragon's
weather was confused with the Arkansas name, not one in Arizona. There
is no data in the Locations.xml file for Gadsden, AZ, a city a few miles
from a weather reporting station near Yuma, Az.

I've attached a patch to remove the wrong entry.

[Bug 215396] Re: gnome-display-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in _start() [when running xgl]

2008-04-28 Thread John S. Gruber
Hello Bryce,

Thanks for getting back to me. I've redone the patch to change the names
to SERVER_RANDR_MAJOR and SERVER_RANDR_MINOR (in both places). Not only
is that more consistent with xserver, different things should have
different names to prevent (more) conceptual confusion.

The patch tested out on my hardy system.

I'm assuming the format of the patch isn't important and again put
together a dpatch format patch to match what was already in
debian/patches.

If this still isn't good please let me know. I'm a beginner on packaging
and patching systems and I have a lot to learn.

[Bug 215396] Re: xserver-xgl patch for root cause--wrong randr protocol version reported

2008-04-15 Thread John S. Gruber
Three line patch to Xgl so that it reports the version of the randr
protocol it implements, rather than the protocol that the build system
defines. xserver-xgl only implements RRQueryVersion, RRSetScreenConfig,
RRSelectInput, and RRGetScreenInfo, the transaction types defined for
version 1.1. Version 1.2 added many more transaction types. Both my
research and my testing indicate that this discrepancy between reported
version and implemented version is the underlying cause of this crash.

The protocol is described in
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/proto/randrproto.git;f=randrproto.txt;a=blob
. The protocol is implemented in randr.c in the randr directory of the
source package. http://sophie.zarb.org/srpm/current,x86_64/x11-server-
xgl mentions a Mandrake patch of xgl-fix-report-randr-version.patch but
I couldn't find it or its license online.

This is my first Ubuntu c patch so please look it over carefully before
release (ie. when you have the time). Of course I have tested it on my
own system.

If successful gnome-display-properties will return a screen indicating
an insufficient version of randr for it to set properties. xrandr -v
will return version 1.1. xrandr alone will return the available screen
resolutions rather than an error message. This should therefore also
address bug164125.

[Bug 198046] Re: Gnome fails to load settings with xserver-xgl installed

2008-04-09 Thread John S. Gruber
Confirmed with nvidia-glx-legacy driver and [GeForce2 GTS/Pro.

Compiz won't run on my system without xserver-xgl.

This worked fine with a hardy version from a few weeks ago.

[Bug 162544] Re: Custom calendar alarm causes computer to beep rather than to play the specified sound; evolution-alarm-notify treats sound URI as simple filename

2008-03-18 Thread John S. Gruber
I tried it with Hardy alpha 6, and then updated hardy with the updates
available today (3/18/2008).
It still doesn't work, I'm afraid. In fact, it no longer beeps either (using
gnome beep).

I believe I'm doing what I did under Gutsy to produce the problem
originally.

Please let me know if I can help.

Thanks.

[Bug 162544] Re: Custom calendar alarm causes computer to beep rather than to play the specified sound; evolution-alarm-notify treats sound URI as simple filename

2008-02-09 Thread John S. Gruber
Thanks for getting back to me. I'm using Gutsy.

To trigger the error:

I selected calendar under evolution

I enter an appointment, then double click the entry to edit its details

I press the alarms button on the dialog box for an alarms dialog box

I select Customize as the alarm type and press the Add button to add the
custom alarm

I then select the Play a sound alarm type and also set when, relative
to the appointment, I'd like the alarm to sound

I then closed all the dialog boxes to save the appointment data

As noted above I was able to circumvent the problem by selecting the Run a
Program alarm type in the add-custom-alarm
dialog box.

Please let me know should you like additional information.

[Bug 162544] Re: Custom calendar alarm causes computer to beep rather than to play the specified sound; evolution-alarm-notify treats sound URI as simple filename

2008-02-09 Thread John S. Gruber
Sorry, I left out an important detail--

in the add-custom-alarm box I also selected the audio file (wav) I
wanted to be used as the alarm.

[Bug 162544] Calendar alarm causes computer to beep rather than to play the specified sound; evolution-alarm-notify treats sound URI as simple filename

2007-11-13 Thread John S. Gruber
Public bug reported:

When a custom audio alarm is set by the evolution calendar function, it
is stored in the calendar.ics file in a VALARM entry as an ATTACH line.
The entry is entered as a file:// url. RFC 2445 defines the contents of
an .ics calendar file and specifies that ATTACH lines must contain URI's
or other particular entries, so this entry is correct. A simple filename
would not conform to the standard.

The evolution-alarm-notify daemon treats this entry as a simple
filename, and since file:///filepath/filename is not a filename it
never exists. Since the filename doesn't exist alarm-notify uses the
gnome beep function to create an audio alert rather than the sound.

Suggested resolution, at a minimum, evolution-alarm-notify could check
for the existence of file:// at the beginning of the entry and, if
present, strip it before the filename check and subsequent passing of it
as an argument to the gnome_sound_play function, which also takes a
filename rather than an URI. This processing is done in
evolution-2.12.0/calendar/gui/alarm-notify/alarm-queue.c function audio-
notification.

To confirm, set a custom audio alarm. Kill the alarm-notify process.
Manually edit the ATTACH line to contain the simple filename. Restart
the alarm-notify process. The custom alarm sound should play at the
appropriate time.

Circumvention
Use the run a program alarm option to run a program such as aplay with the
sound filename as an argument. You will have to authorize the aplay program the
first time it runs, but can then check the box to allow it run subsequently
without interruption.

The gui doesn't seem to remember the sound selected the next time the
alarm sound dialog box is opened. One might speculate that
initialization of this dialog box might expect a filename rather than a
gui in the calendar.ics file, but I haven't checked this wild guess.
