[Bug 1962565] Re: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system

2022-03-01 Thread Kay-Ro
attached you can find a screenshot of htop after deleting multiple files. The
ram usage does not seem to be dependent of the files deleted (no apparent
difference between deleting 200 files totaling 75mb and 500 files totaling
700mb)
In this instance there were almost 40 processes of the gnome-shell
running "alt+f2" "r" cleared the used ram but did not reduce the number of
gnome-shell processes.

[Bug 1962565] [NEW] gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system

2022-03-01 Thread Kay-Ro
Public bug reported:

sometimes the system uses 11GB of 16GB ram for 10+ gnome-shell processes.
It seemingly occurs as soon as deleting files via the file manager. It occurred
for me when trying to delete 500 files with a total of 700mb but also when just
deleting 200 files totaling around 75mb.
A suggested solution to try
  gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-trash false
(bug 1876641, mentioned to me in bug 1962357) did not resolve the issue.

It seems that the problem (sorry for German) is that »/usr/lib/gimp/2.0

but is also present in archive gimp.

(First I had the problem the other way around: The bug appeared when
upgrading gimp, reporting that »/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-
ins/colorxhtml/colorxhtml.py« was also present in gimp-python. After
that I uninstalled both and started as given above.

I also tried to rename file »/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-
ins/colorxhtml/colorxhtml.py« away before installing gimp-python, but
the same message appears.

[Bug 1321823] Re: deault unity menu does not show with desktop

2014-06-16 Thread Felix Kay
** Description changed:

Description: The default menu panel for unity doesn not show when no
other program is highlighted. It should display something similar to the
Nautilus Menu. Problem did - if I remember right - also occur with my
  Precise Pangolin.

Reproduce: Minimize or close all active windows or hit show desktop
button. Move mouse to the very top to show standard menu.

  Additional information:
  - using standard global menu
  - only an optical (not an essential) issue
  - using Trusty right now

Just thought I might report this since it affected me for a longer time
now.As for me I consider it only a cosmetic issue.
+
+
+ UPDATE (16 Jun 2014): Related to #7692565 - Since this one refers to
+ Ubuntu 11.04 and Unity2D I don't know if this is helpful (Unity2d is
+ canceled in favor of 3D with 13.04). Yet one can find a bit of code in
+ the bug description which might be helpful.
+
+ Also I am not sure if the bug is assigned to the right package. The bug
+ might be a Compiz problem.

[Bug 1212845] [NEW] Software Updater does not show any details

2013-08-15 Thread Felix Kay
Public bug reported:

Every once in a while the software updater prompts in my 12.10
GNOME/MATE without showing anything in the fields Details of updates
and technical description. So there's no info at all although Ubuntu
wants to install some 100 KB of software (see attached screenshot). By
closing and restarting the Software Updater the problem vanishes
showing the complete installable software of some MBs with details and
technical description. Not reproducible. And - I think - not very
critical.

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-12-27 Thread Andrew Kay
I tried to do some more work this time using Gimp 2.7.3 (compiled myself on
Xubuntu 11.10 from some instructions)
And using my Wacom intuos 3.

I can confirm that both bugs are still there:

- sometimes you make a stroke , but you might have just as well stayed
in bed, because gimp won't move the tool

- sometimes you get a stray point (x = 0 or y = 0) added to your stroke,
resulting in long horizontal or diagonal splodges where you don't want
'em (some kind of race condition I expect)

I'm using vanilla Xubuntu, so there's just xfce4 its desktop - no
unity/metacity/...

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-25 Thread Andrew Kay
I'll have to get back to you on these. I'm still using gimp 2.6, mainly
out of cowardice.

meanwhile, I don't know the difference between gnome gnome shell ubuntu
classic unity compiz metacity
-- some of them are window managers, some are something else. It's confusing
and I haven't seen anything that clearly explains what is what or the official
way to choose between them in ubuntu. I followed some instructions, but I
don't know now whether I have gnome or gnome shell...

regards
Andrew

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-24 Thread Andrew Kay
upgraded to oneiric ocelot 11.10 (what ARE the Ubuntu people of power
thinking about these days?)

with Unity2D the gimp problem is different (but equally crippling) --
Wacom Intuos 3: when I touch the pad to introduce a stroke (eg brush or
eraser), the gimp appears often to get a signal to draw in the top left
hand corner, or sometimes on the left edge, so I end up with a long
diagonal line or horizontal line, terminating at the real pen position.

Naturally this makes gimp unusable.

Maybe it is relevant that I have the windows set so that focus follows
the cursor, something that makes gimp MUCH nicer to use than it is on a
windows-style click-to-focus. I don't think the Unity team really
understand this mode.

I haven't yet tried with the gnome shell.

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-24 Thread Andrew Kay
thanks Chris -- though the reason I think it's the same bug is that the
solution is the same, ie go back to gnome desktop. I've now tested it
and it works pretty well on gnome.

(Actually, I still saw the sudden leap to x=0 or y=0 once or twice in
hundreds of test strokes -- it must be some kind of race condition)

(I just get the impression that Unity is nowhere near ready to use for
the mainstream. I don't think any of the features are particularly
helpful, and there are so many things that seem harder to do. As you
say, eventually things will be sorted out. Meanwhile, I just want to get
on with using the computer to create stuff...!)

cheers
Andrew

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-16 Thread Andrew Kay
I haven't tried ocelot yet, but on Natty it is only a problem with Unity
-- ie going back to gnome removes the problem.

When you look at the output from xinput it seems (and I'm not
experienced here) that the driver is generating the right combination of
ups and downs.

So it seems to be some interaction between unity and some strange
assumption that gimp is making (because I haven't seen any complaints
about similar applications)

I agree with Stefan Zeyen.

Although I did always have trouble (since approximately Jaunty!) with
operating menus with the stylus or the mouse, the problem with failure
in the actual painting canvas is brand new in Maverick.

[Bug 786317] [NEW] wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-05-21 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

It appears that sometimes when the pen is lifted a button up command is
somehow not sent to gimp.
This is new in Natty (it all worked beautifully in Maverick)

gimp 2.6.11,
ubuntu natty
Wacom intuous3 6x8

To reproduce:
make sure you have selected wacom as extended input device. Press P to paint.
Make a stroke. Very often (but not always) at the end of the stroke when the
pen is lifted the paint cursor remains at the end of the stroke and does not
follow the pointer. It's necessary to click again (anywhere, or with any
button) to get the cursor following the pointer again before you can draw
another stroke. This makes gimp unusable.

[Bug 400301] Re: Workspace switcher shows single workspace only on all non-Metacity window managers

2010-10-14 Thread Jim Kay
I'm having the same issue (with the being stuck with 1 workspace with
OpenBox) on a clean fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

I know there's a patch for it here, but can you please update the repo packages
for it?
I'm somewhat of a newbie, and AFAIK, patches can only be applied to built
source packages.

I have no idea how to do this, and it is too complicated for someone
like me.

I'm thinking about uninstalling OpenBox and using Metacity because of
this.

[Bug 563862] Re: Connected Ipod(?) causes g-p-m to fail

2010-09-22 Thread Jim Kay
@Paul Sladen

The problem is not Iphone/Ipod specific. The problem is with a bunch of
different media hardware, no one has yet made the connection with all
this different media. Some people have problems with inserted DVD's,
others with certain USB devices. (cameras, Ipods, ect.)

I'm getting the same error and my problem is my Belkin F7D1101 USB wireless
adapter. When it is unplugged during boot, the error doesn't exist. When it's
plugged in during boot, I get the 'Power Management Not Responding' error.
I use this wireless adapter for my internet, so it's irritating having to keep
unplugging it.

I'm going to tinker with the Power Management package. If I'm able to
fix it, I'll post back my solution.

Yes, this bug is very similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/204202
In another thread workaround was suggested - you have to switch keyboard layout
order and move USA layout to the first position. It works for my karmic with
USA and Russian layouts.

[Bug 385335] [NEW] [gnome-font-viewer] Setting Custom Sample Text

2009-06-09 Thread Gias Kay Lee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

At this moment, gnome-font-viewer uses The quick brown fox jumps over
the lazy dog as the sample text for all fonts. This however is an awful
implementation for CJK-oriented fonts, because for these fonts, what the
user would like to see are the Chinese characters/Japanese kanas/Korean
hanguls part of the content, not Roman alphabets. In some CJK fonts that
have their contents exclusively on Chinese characters/Japanese
kanas/Korean hanguls, The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
sample text simply appears as a bunch of black blocks (see attached
picture). This is nowhere helpful for the user to preview the font's
content.

[Bug 320458] [NEW] Nautilus Freezes Upon Opening Certain Folders Through Clicking Tree View Mode Side Pane

2009-01-23 Thread Gias Kay Lee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

- Ubuntu Intrepid
- Nautilus 2.24.1

When the side pane is active and is set to tree view mode, Nautilus will
freeze and go dead upon opening certain folders ***through the action of
clicking the tree side pane*** - clicking the main view in the right to open
the said folders, however, will ***not*** cause the freeze to happen, no matter
the main view is in List View, Icon View, or Compact View. Screenshots
follow:

(1) http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/6906/37748800kb0.png
In my case, it's /usr/share that will trigger the crash. If I am to open it
through the tree side pane, it will freeze. The cursor stays as an arrow
pointer and Nautilus will stop to response.

(2) http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/1276/56835644vr9.png
Jumping back to desktop and switch to Nautilus again - it's royally dead.

(3) http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1938/36159763in6.png
Everything is fine though if I am to open /usr/share through the main view in
the right side.

(4) http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/216/85604868eu8.png
The cursor will go into the busy circle pointer, and it takes about 5 to 10
seconds to load, but it works correctly in the end.

[Bug 290509] [NEW] Intrepid user switcher applet doesn't work with kdm

2008-10-28 Thread Benjamin Kay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

The new user switcher applet in Intrepid (the one that replaces the
logout button) is causing problems when kdm is set as the login manager.
The user switcher applet isn't drawn, and an error dialog (see attached
screenshot) with the following text appear immediately after login:

User switcher has quit unexpectedly
If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel.

The dialog provides two buttons, Don't Reload and Reload. Clicking
Reload doesn't bring the applet back -- it just brings up the same
dialog. Clicking Don't Reload makes the dialog go away, but the user
is still left without the applet. Switching the login manager to gdm
does not automatically bring the applet back, however after switching to
gdm the applet can be added to the panel manually.

The fact that the switching users in Gnome doesn't work with kdm isn't so bad
(and it's the same situation we had in Gutsy). The following are real problems:
1. vague error message
2. absence of a logout button
3. applet doesn't automatically return if the user switches back to gdm

Here's what I think ought to happen if the user sets kdm as the login manager:
1. The first Gnome login after the switch, a notification tells the user that
user switching won't work without gdm, and offers to switch the login manager
back to gdm.
2. The applet is drawn the same way (with the user's name and a functioning
logout button), but clicking on it doesn't provide the option of switching
users.
3. The ability to switch users automatically returns if the login manager is
switched back to gdm.

[Bug 274085] Re: Please update Ekiga to 3.00

2008-10-27 Thread Benjamin Kay
Let's try to be rational here. The Ubuntu developers have been very busy
putting together the best release of Ubuntu yet. I'm sure they'd like to
include it in the release, but things don't always work out the way we
want them too. If 3.0.x doesn't make it into main by release time,
hopefully it will be officially supported and added to main soon after
the fact. Even if that doesn't happen, you can expect to see it in
backports, or you can use the PPA that Yannick has graciously put
together for us.

I know it's frustrating when our favorite package isn't kept up to date,
but let's be thankful for all the hard work and time the developers have
put into making the rest of Intrepid Ibex totally awesome!

2007-11-30 Thread Kay Parker
Well, I tried it on a Gutsy with a FAT32 partition. It works fine. Since
I converted it to NTSF I can reproduce the bug.

[Bug 131743] Re: liferea-add-feed does nothing in firefox

2007-10-31 Thread Kay Parker
I configured liferea-add-feed in PreferencesFeeds and installed
firefox-gnome-support. Even a liferea-add-feed URL doesn't add the
feed to lifereas feed list.
