[Bug 1962565] Re: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system
attached you can find a screenshot of htop after deleting multiple files. The ram usage does not seem to be dependent of the files deleted (no apparent difference between deleting 200 files totaling 75mb and 500 files totaling 700mb) In this instance there were almost 40 processes of the gnome-shell running "alt+f2" "r" cleared the used ram but did not reduce the number of gnome-shell processes. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot from 2022-03-01 10-54-41.jpg" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1962565/+attachment/5564430/+files/Screenshot%20from%202022-03-01%2010-54-41.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1962565 Title: gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1962565/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1962565] [NEW] gnome-shell occupies a lot of ram and blocks system
Public bug reported: sometimes the system uses 11GB of 16GB ram for 10+ gnome-shell processes. It seemingly occurs as soon as deleting files via the file manager. It occurred for me when trying to delete 500 files with a total of 700mb but also when just deleting 200 files totaling around 75mb. A suggested solution to try gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-trash false (bug 1876641, mentioned to me in bug 1962357) did not resolve the issue. ** Description changed: Description: The default menu panel for unity doesn not show when no other program is highlighted. It should display something similar to the Nautilus Menu. [Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)
I tried to do some more work this time using Gimp 2.7.3 (compiled myself on Xubuntu 11.10 from some instructions) And using my Wacom intuos 3. I can confirm that both bugs are still there: - sometimes you make a stroke , but you might have just as well stayed in bed, because gimp won't move the tool - sometimes you get a stray point (x = 0 or y = 0) added to your stroke, resulting in long horizontal or diagonal splodges where you don't want 'em (some kind of race condition I expect) I'm using vanilla Xubuntu, so there's just xfce4 its desktop - no unity/metacity/... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786317 Title: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?) I'll have to get back to you on these. I'm still using gimp 2.6, mainly out of cowardice. meanwhile, I don't know the difference between gnome gnome shell ubuntu classic unity compiz metacity -- some of them are window managers, some are something else. It's confusing and I haven't seen anything that clearly explains what is what or the official way to choose between them in ubuntu. I followed some instructions, but I don't know now whether I have gnome or gnome shell... regards Andrew -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786317 Title: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?) [Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)
upgraded to oneiric ocelot 11.10 (what ARE the Ubuntu people of power thinking about these days?) with Unity2D the gimp problem is different (but equally crippling) -- Wacom Intuos 3: when I touch the pad to introduce a stroke (eg brush or eraser), the gimp appears often to get a signal to draw in the top left hand corner, or sometimes on the left edge, so I end up with a long diagonal line or horizontal line, terminating at the real pen position. Naturally this makes gimp unusable. Maybe it is relevant that I have the windows set so that focus follows the cursor, something that makes gimp MUCH nicer to use than it is on a windows-style click-to-focus. I don't think the Unity team really understand this mode. I haven't yet tried with the gnome shell. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786317 Title: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?) [Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)
thanks Chris -- though the reason I think it's the same bug is that the solution is the same, ie go back to gnome desktop. I've now tested it and it works pretty well on gnome. (Actually, I still saw the sudden leap to x=0 or y=0 once or twice in hundreds of test strokes -- it must be some kind of race condition) (I just get the impression that Unity is nowhere near ready to use for the mainstream. I don't think any of the features are particularly helpful, and there are so many things that seem harder to do. As you say, eventually things will be sorted out. Meanwhile, I just want to get on with using the computer to create stuff...!) cheers Andrew -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786317 Title: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?) [Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)
I haven't tried ocelot yet, but on Natty it is only a problem with Unity -- ie going back to gnome removes the problem. When you look at the output from xinput it seems (and I'm not experienced here) that the driver is generating the right combination of ups and downs. So it seems to be some interaction between unity and some strange assumption that gimp is making (because I haven't seen any complaints about similar applications) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786317 Title: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?) [Bug 786317] [NEW] wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gimp It appears that sometimes when the pen is lifted a button up command is somehow not sent to gimp. This is new in Natty (it all worked beautifully in Maverick) gimp 2.6.11, ubuntu natty Wacom intuous3 6x8 To reproduce: make sure you have selected wacom as extended input device. Press P to paint. Make a stroke. Very often (but not always) at the end of the stroke when the pen is lifted the paint cursor remains at the end of the stroke and does not follow the pointer. It's necessary to click again (anywhere, or with any button) to get the cursor following the pointer again before you can draw another stroke. This makes gimp unusable. [Bug 385335] [NEW] [gnome-font-viewer] Setting Custom Sample Text
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center At this moment, gnome-font-viewer uses The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog as the sample text for all fonts. This however is an awful implementation for CJK-oriented fonts, because for these fonts, what the user would like to see are the Chinese characters/Japanese kanas/Korean hanguls part of the content, not Roman alphabets. [Bug 290509] [NEW] Intrepid user switcher applet doesn't work with kdm
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-applets The new user switcher applet in Intrepid (the one that replaces the logout button) is causing problems when kdm is set as the login manager. The user switcher applet isn't drawn, and an error dialog (see attached screenshot) with the following text appear immediately after login: User switcher has quit unexpectedly If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel. The dialog provides two buttons, Don't Reload and Reload. Clicking Reload doesn't bring the applet back -- it just brings up the same dialog. Clicking Don't Reload makes the dialog go away, but the user is still left without the applet. Switching the login manager to gdm does not automatically bring the applet back, however after switching to gdm the applet can be added to the panel manually. The fact that the switching users in Gnome doesn't work with kdm isn't so bad (and it's the same situation we had in Gutsy). The following are real problems: 1. vague error message 2. absence of a logout button 3. applet doesn't automatically return if the user switches back to gdm Here's what I think ought to happen if the user sets kdm as the login manager: 1. The first Gnome login after the switch, a notification tells the user that user switching won't work without gdm, and offers to switch the login manager back to gdm. 2. The applet is drawn the same way (with the user's name and a functioning logout button), but clicking on it doesn't provide the option of switching users. 3. [Bug 274085] Re: Please update Ekiga to 3.00
Let's try to be rational here. The Ubuntu developers have been very busy putting together the best release of Ubuntu yet. I'm sure they'd like to include it in the release, but things don't always work out the way we want them too. If 3.0.x doesn't make it into main by release time, hopefully it will be officially supported and added to main soon after the fact. Even if that doesn't happen, you can expect to see it in backports, or you can use the PPA that Yannick has graciously put together for us. I know it's frustrating when our favorite package isn't kept up to date, but let's be thankful for all the hard work and time the developers have put into making the rest of Intrepid Ibex totally awesome! -- Please update Ekiga to 3.00 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/274085 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to ekiga in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
