[Bug 669062] [NEW] No information about discharging rate and no estimate of remaining time on Ideapad S12

2010-10-31 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm using natty (started with a clean Maverick install but the same
problems are there too) on my Lenovo ideapad S12. Gnome-power-Manager
doesn't display the discharging rate of the internal battery when on
battery power and the icon doesn't give an estimate on the remaining
runtime but only displays it's calculating the remaining time. I don't
think it's a hardware-issue since powertop can read the discharge rate
just fine.

[Bug 538849] Re: Uses 100% CPU

2010-04-03 Thread Klaus Doblmann
If the patch is applied then I take it for granted the bug is resolved -
for now. There are others affected by it who can confirm this - I can't
reinstall evolution and let it run for a few days as it would mess up my
mail-archive (I'm getting several hundred a day and I want these in one
database in one program - receiving them via pop would let them end up
in the evolution database from where I'd have to manually copy them over
to sylpheed...)

[Bug 538849] Re: Uses 100% CPU

2010-04-01 Thread Klaus Doblmann
@Russell: No, it also happened when no mail was being sent. I'm using
the past because I got rid of Evolution now (because of this bug,
another one involving evolution to hang when a tiff is being previewed
and the generally poor performance when handling large amounts of mails)
and switched to Sylpheed - something I should've done a few years ago.
It's incredible how much Sylpheed is faster - we're speaking operations
taking place in the blink of an eye versus taking 10+ seconds like
opening folders with tens of thousands of mails in it.

@Sebastien: As I uninstalled Evolution I can't provide backtraces but take a
look at this bugreport, there's a workaround posted:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606902
and here are a few backtraces: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=595421

[Bug 509267] [NEW] Bad rendering of scanned pdfs in applications using poppler

2010-01-18 Thread Klaus Doblmann
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 432236 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432236

Public bug reported:

In our university's library we have a scanner where we can scan pages
from books and take them home with us as PDFs. Up to Intrepid (didn't
test Jaunty) the rendering of the scanned images was fine, the text very
readable. Starting with Karmic the documents looked as if antialiasing
or something like that was missing - both in evince and in Xournal. XPDF
renders the documents just fine as can be seen in the attached
screenshot-omparison (left: poppler, right: xpdf).

[Bug 448515] [NEW] display shutoff not being triggered

2009-10-11 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm running Karmic with the latest updates and have been seing this bug
for over a week now (since the display-shutoff-bug in xorg was fixed but
that's most likely unrelated).

I have set my power preferences to shut off the display after five
minutes. If I boot up my computer the shutoff is not being triggered,
the display stays on forever. Also when I lock my screen the display
only goes black but the backlight is still on. What makes the shutoff
work is to simply open and close the powermanager program in system -
settings (I don't need to actually change any settings, I just open it
and close it again after it's loaded). After that display shutoff works
as expected - until I reboot.

[Bug 439846] [NEW] brasero 2.28.0-0ubuntu1 breaks DVD playback

2009-10-01 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

The update to brasero 2.28.0-0ubuntu1 broke DVD playback on my Karmic-
machine. libdvdread failed on multiple titles to seek to certain
positions, causing DVD-playback to either don't start at all or crash in
the middle of the movie. This happened both in VLC and in (S)Mplayer.
After reverting back to brasero 2.27.92-0ubuntu2 and rebooting the world
was back to normal.

I suspect the commit in question that messed things up was (from the
changenotes): - fix a potential data corruption with dvdcss and
libisofs in certain conditions

[Bug 439846] Re: brasero 2.28.0-0ubuntu1 breaks DVD playback

2009-10-01 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Thanks, Pedro, I'll try that tomorrow if I can get into GIT that soon -
haven't really worked with it yet...

However there are multiple guys experiencing these problems, see this
post (and the thread associated with it):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=807postcount=27

It might not have been that exact commit (even though it touches the
parts of DVD-playback making trouble) but it's definitely that
libbrasero-media0-update that broke things for many people.

Start GDM only tells me that GDM is already running. restart gdm

@Pete: That might certainly be the case. I haven't read much about upstart so
far but I will have to deepen my research in that area.
But it's interesting to see two machines with the same patch-level and the same
problem reacting so differently. Someone mentioned in the karmic-testing-forum
he was able to start gdm just by switching to tty7. I haven't tried it as I
don't want to reboot in a situation like this unless it's absolutely necessary
;)

[Bug 431264] [NEW] cpufreq-applet needs root rights to change frequency

2009-09-17 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates here (cpufreq-applet version
2.27.92)

I'm running BOINC and as of lately when selecting ondemand (which is a
different bug) the cpu goes up to its maximum frequency (it used to stay
at the lowest frequency in intrepid...) so I need to set it manually to
800MHz (lowest frequency on my CPU) after every reboot. When I change
the frequency, I'm asked for my superuser password which is quite
annoying and it wasn't the case in previous versions (intrepid). I hope
this behaviour can be reverted or maybe someone can tell me the resons
for the applet currently needing root permissions.

cheers,
Klaus

- frequency in intrepid...) so I need to set it manually at 800MHz (lowest
- frequency on my CPU) after every reboot. When I change the frequency,
- I'm asked for my superuser password which is quite annoying and it
- wasn't the case in previous versions. I hope this behaviour can be
- reverted or maybe someone can tell me the resons for the applet
- currently needing root permissions.

[Bug 431264] Re: cpufreq-applet needs root rights to change frequency

2009-09-17 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Thanks! I skipped Jaunty as Intrepid worked smoothly so I didn't notice
these changes. My fault.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-11-12 Thread Klaus Doblmann
Cheers, guys, building UVC from source also fixed the problem for me
(x86 with latest 27-7-kernel via normal system updates)

@zoomy942: Here's a detailed howto:

1) bring up the console
2) enter these commands one after the other:

sudo apt-get install subversion
sudo apt-get install build-essentials (just in case)
svn checkout svn://svn.berlios.de/linux-uvc/linux-uvc/trunk
cd trunk
make

then run the following line as one (just copy and paste* everything within the
quotation marks, this is one command):
sudo install uvcvideo.ko -v -m644 /lib/modules/$(uname
-r)/kernel/drivers/media/video/uvc/uvcvideo.ko
sudo make install
sudo cp -av /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/media/video/uvc/uvcvideo.ko
/lib/modules
sudo depmod -ae $(uname -r)

3) reboot
4) Enjoy your cheese ;)

*hint: to paste something into the console-window use ctrl+shift+v or
right-click and select paste
