Public bug reported:

Background:
This 'bug' is present on two of my machines (the ones that have edgy), both of
them were upgraded from dapper (both worked fine with dapper). I may have toyed
a bit with the other machine, but the configuration on the other is untouched
(since upgrading from working dapper)

Problem:
Fonts on GTK applications (like synaptic) are not anti-aliased (smooth), but
very grainy.
This happens with both user and root (with sudo). I use the Freesans font, but
the problem persists with a couple of other fonts I've tried (including
BitStream font). Some apps (like OpenOffice) work fine (though I think OO uses
it's own font settings)

What I've tried:
I haven't touched the other machine, but on the other I've tried tinkering with
the configuration files, tried different fonts and settings with kcontrol and
gconf-editor (which also has grainy fonts) with both user and sudo...to no
avail.

Notes:
- Neither of the machines have gnome installed
- The fonts look fine if I start a gtk app on a dapper machine (through ssh)
- The bug looks similar to one mentioned by Michael S. in comments of this bug:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/54552

I'll gladly provide more information if asked to.

Thanks
