[Bug 1924679] [NEW] Intel Nuc install. Icons go blank randomly, nothing opens. Need to remove power to reboot.

2021-04-16 Thread Mark Sedhom
Public bug reported:

Hi Guys,

I've installed Ubuntu on my Intel Nuc, and have had issues with the OS
randomly freezing. Usually the icons go blank, apps close, and I'm
unable to open any applications. The only way to get the system back is
to take the power out of the NUC and put it back in to form a reboot.

I used apport-cli -c to create Bug #1916463 as the suggested workaround
did not really work out. I will add the other requested files there.

Maybe then this bug can be closed as being a duplicate.

[Bug 1900157] Re: nautilus crashes xserver on rapid mount and unmount of network shares or google drive

2020-10-19 Thread Mark-Daniel Lüthje
Thank you for your reply. It's not closing of nautilus that causes the crash.
Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open nautilus
  2. Connect to a networkshare (e.g. Google Drive, Samba share)
2.1 If it's a samba share, set a bookmark in nautilus
  3. Now connect and disconnect the different shares several times
  4. After 1 to 5 iterations gnome-shell freezes and xserver restarts

You are of course entirely correct. Hamburger menus are eye-wateringly
poor fallbacks at the best of times, and it's frustrating for me too to
see them all over the desktop. I say this to make the point that even
though we care, we are simply not able to sustain a divergent UX. I
loved the work we did on Unity, controversial as it was, and believe it
was taking free software desktops in a good direction, we just couldn't
afford it, and that was that.

Perhaps in future you'll draw the distinction between the things people
care about and the things they are able to change. We are, right now,
bringing a very wide range of good things to bear in the field of
desktop, appliances, clouds, containers. We just can't manage to have an
independent desktop design and delivery program, which I know from
experience is a huge amount of work. I'm grateful we can collaborate
with existing open source teams, we ship GNOME by default but we also
take *care* to help KDE, Mate, and several others with fewer hamburger
menus.

[Bug 1873700] Re: Display won't rotate, rotate lock/unlock button missing, can't rotate screen with xrandr commands

2020-04-19 Thread Mark Johnston
Sorry - not a total noob here, but enough to embarrass myself... I had
to boot with "nomodeset" in order to get my machine to boot. That caused
the situation I described here. When I blacklisted the nouveau video
driver, I got my functionality back.

For those who know better how to fix these things - the real problem is
that the nouveau driver didn't work on my XPS 13 9365, causing it to
hang while trying to boot.

2020-04-06 Thread Mark Smith
Sorry, I should add that the pop-up window remained on top of all the others,
so it wasn't hidden behind anything else before I went to bed.
And although it was at the top, when I entered my password and the field went
grey, the window remained visible, but if I clicked anywhere in the window, I
actually clicked whatever was behind it.

[Bug 1865131] Re: Evince 3.28.4-0 won't start anymore

2020-02-28 Thread Mark
** Description changed:

Since a few days evince does not start anymore

I tried reinstalling it but didn't fix it.

If i type evince in terminal I get:
  (evince:10976): dbind-WARNING **: 12:53:45.012: Error retrieving
accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Don't know if it can be useful.
If try to open a pdf I get:
  (evince:11711): dbind-WARNING **: 12:58:05.458: Error retrieving
accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
  (evince:11719): dbind-WARNING **: 12:58:05.521: Error retrieving
accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)

  I am on Lubuntu 18.04 evince 3.28.4-0

The same issue was reported on evince gitlab but someone (a dev?) said
that the version is too old to be handled by them and ask here.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues/1346 that's the original
report (by another user with the same issue)
+
+ Edit: Installing the latest version from Flathub makes evince to run again
(even though in terminal shows the error below)
+ (evince:2): dbind-WARNING **: 22:11:54.800: AT-SPI: Error retrieving
accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown
+
+ So while it does not fixes the issue from the affected version, it makes
+ evince usable for users again.

[Bug 1864558] [NEW] Printer adds automatically at boot with notification or if printer deleted

2020-02-24 Thread Mark Richards
Public bug reported:

When booting 20.04 I get a notification on the logon screen each time
advising that my wireless printer has been setup. If I remove the
printer via settings, then as soon as it's removed, it gets re-added and
I see the same notification as I do on the logon screen about the
printer having been setup. I've attached a screenshot of this
notification.

[Bug 1860824] [NEW] IMAP with STARTTLS on port 143 is broken

2020-01-24 Thread Mark - Syminet
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded from eoan -> fossa to test. Incoming mail is configured
to use STARTTLS over port 143 and works fine in eoan and bionic.

But in fossa, upon startup IMAP immediately fails with error message:

'The reported error was "Error performing TLS handshake: An unexpected
TLS packet was received."'

...no incoming mail and none of the folders will open.

Workaround: Switch account configuration to use TLS directly over
dedicated port 993

Then everything works as normal. But users for whom port 993 is not an
option, no incoming mail or access to their mailfolders.

[Bug 1857829] [NEW] gnome calender does not respect format settings

2019-12-29 Thread john mark
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.10 (other versions are most likely affected too)

The gnome calender window (inside the notification window) that opens
when you click on the clock on the top does not respect the formating
that was set in the "Region & Language" settings. It only translates
months and days, but formating of my selected langauge is ignored.

I have my "Formats" set to german (and language set to english), so the correct
formating should be
29. Dezember 2019
but what I actually get is
Dezember 29 2019

Another issues is, the letters used inside the calender to abbreviate the days
are still displayed in english.
Example:
M T W T F S S
when it should be
M D M D F S S

BOTH of these issues are fixed by switching the system language to
german. This is not how it should be. These things should depend on the
systems format settings, not language.

[Bug 1841371] [NEW] GIMP crashes intermittently on user actions

2019-08-25 Thread Mark Carroll
Public bug reported:

The following trace was captured during a copy action which reminds me
of bug 1816254 but the web UI didn't offer that as an option.

The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 153405 error_code 3 request_code 18 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 1773386] Re: Returned to login screen immediately after login

2019-02-23 Thread Mark Krueger
Update on my previous comment (#4): I checked what "pam-auth-update
--force" did (it backs up the old versions), and ended up accepting all
its changes so that I will hopefully never have this problem going
forward. Because it added pam_systemd to common-session I have now
removed the line I added to gdm-launch-environment and gdm3 still works
(even with Wayland).

[Bug 1773386] Re: Returned to login screen immediately after login

2019-02-23 Thread Mark Krueger
I had a similar issue. This error in syslog finally lead me to my
solution:

(EE) systemd-logind: failed to get session: PID 10023 does not belong to
any known session

As a result of that error, gdm-x-session fails further along in the gdm3
start up process and aborts:

/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2849]: dbus-daemon[3479]: [session uid=136
pid=3479] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' requested by
':1.0' (uid=136 pid=2849 comm="/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session gnome-session
--autost" label="unconfined")
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2849]: dbus-daemon[3479]: [session uid=136
pid=3479] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1' failed: Process
org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1
gdm-x-session: could not fetch environment:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process
org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1
gdm3: GdmManager: trying to register new display
gdm3: GdmManager: Error while retrieving session id for sender: Error getting
session id from systemd: No data available
gdm-x-session: Could not register display:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: No display available

The gdm3 service just keeps trying to start gdm-x-session over and over again,
flooding syslog.
I fixed it by adding this line to /etc/pam.d/gdm-launch-environment:

session optionalpam_systemd.so

My theory on the real problem is that pam-auth-update is run during some
package installs and it would have added pam_systemd to /etc/pam.d
/common-session. However, I had done manual edits to at least one
/etc/pam.d/common-* file, in which case pam-auth-update aborts if "--
force" is not specified.

And I have to press super+space to make it visible. I'm on ubuntu 18.10

[Bug 1804973] Re: Super + left/right

2018-12-14 Thread Mark Lwembe
My screens highest resolution is 1366 x 768.
Thanks for responding. Are there plans to make changes to allow for those with
lower resolutions.

Also is this why it the edge snapping works without the sidebar as the
width of the nautilus window without it is smaller? Or is it something
else?

[Bug 1795121] Re: 18.10: Indicator icons not shown in the panel

2018-10-24 Thread Mark Kelley
Roberto Leinardi's comment on 9-29 might have been accurate for him, but
overall it is not right. Appindicators still do not work on 18.10,
including a fresh install of 18.10 after its release date, one in which
Unity was never installed, nor unity-tweak-tool. I've seen that message
repeated all over and it does nothing to solve the problem for me nor
for most other people.

[Bug 1783216] Re: GNOME Settings app starts very slowly, gst-plugin-scanner high CPU usage

2018-07-23 Thread Mark
** Description changed:

The GNOME settings application takes very long time to open. Might be
caused by gst-plugin-scanner, which exhibits high CPU usage after the
Settings app is launched (and until the time it opens).

+ EDIT: I think I may have narrowed down the issue to graphics drivers.
+ The laptop I'm using is an NVIDIA Optimus laptop. I installed Bumblebee
+ a few minutes ago and the issue seems to be gone (at least as far as I
+ can see for now).

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

  3) What you expected to happen

plugin-scanner hogs the CPU (at the same time).

I agree with monkeybrain2012. The question that must then be raised is
how this breakage got into an Ubuntu software update for the masses
almost 2 months after it was known that a kernel change had broken gdm3
login, and after commits for the underlying issues had been created in
debian.

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-03 Thread Mark
Turns out lightdm is working after all, almost. If you wait patiently
when the black screen appears after the Ubuntu 5 dots boot screen,
possibly as much as 4 minutes, then the desktop eventually appears,
albeit somewhat messed up, with a message box asking you to "unlock the
login keychain" because it "was not unlocked when you logged in". After
entering the password, the desktop is redrawn correctly and everything
works. I'm still on kernel 4.15.0.24. It seems lightdm is just very slow
as noted by njsf.

I think, if you touch the mouse during this black screen period, the
login screen appears and, if you login you see a black screen for
several seconds then it logs you out again. A cycle you can't get out
of. That's what led to my comment that lightdm wasn't working for me.

Daniel, I will create a bug of my own. Thanks for the explanation.

I don't consider switching to lightdm to be a solution the problem. It's a

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-03 Thread Mark
Daniel,

Which part of what I wrote you do you another bug about? The fundamental
issue, gdm doesn't work, hence no login screen, after the latest
kernel/gdm update is the same as this bug, so why create a duplicate?

The previous issues were with past distribution versions so filing a bug
is not useful.

That leaves the lightdm problem. Is that it?

[Bug 1779476] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: gdm3 does not switch to graphics after update

2018-07-02 Thread Mark
I'm suffering this after this update too. It is the latest in a
depressingly long list of Ubuntu updates that have ed up my system.
You really *need* better testing of updates. If you can't improve the
testing then there needs to be a way to roll-back the system to before
an update.

Instead of the login screen I see the output of a log. Every item the
log is [ OK ] except for

[ .] A start job is running for Hold until boot process finishes
up (28s / no limit)[ OK ] Started Show Plymouth BootScreen.

The last entry is

[ OK ] Started GNOME DisplayManager. Dispatcher
Serviceupport.hanges.pp link was shut down.

lightdm is not working for me. Yes a login screen is displayed but after
login the screen goes black for quite some time then the login screen
reappears again. I am unable to use my system so this is a priority 1
bug for me.

Same for me after attempting to install GNOME Human Shell Theme

was able to re-save from Dash. Tweaks does run. But Settings hangs on-

[Bug 1721637] Re: can't open system settings(Ubuntu 17.10), icon is visible but settings don't dislay

2018-03-20 Thread Mark Vinod Sinnathamby
I installed Ubuntu 17.10.1 today on my laptop, and got the same problem.
Opened settings and moved the dock to the bottom, and the settings
window just disappeared. The answer given in the following link helped
me to disable the second virtual monitor from the command line, and
restored the settings window back to my normal laptop screen view:

Link: https://askubuntu.com/questions/366813/disable-second-non-
existent-screen-from-command-line

Of course, this second monitor may come up again when you restart your
machine, so it would be a good option to follow the latter part of the
answer in above link, and put the command in a script which you can
schedule to run at startup. This is a workaround though, and this not
the proper fix, which hopefully may come in a future update/patch.

[Bug 1743183] Re: Mouse left button not being noticed when clicked under Wayland - works under x11

2018-03-16 Thread Mark Rogers
Update:

I was running the: paulo-miguel-dias/mesa build
and the: oibaf/graphics-driversbuild

I uninstalled both and reverted to the standard ubuntu drivers/setup. This
fixed the mouse issue.
As both of the above adons have some popularity one of them may have been the
cause of the issue - though cant confirm which one. Perhaps it was because I
was running both that caused a configuration issue after an update - all just
conjecture, however I now have a working Wayland session now.

Hope this sheds some light on what might have happened.

[Bug 1371928] Re: Main window content fully transparent

2018-02-07 Thread Mark Jeronimus
I have it with Java, Firefox, Remmina, Wine, Terminal, etc. Lately most
often with the TortoiseHG's rejected chunks merge window. I on average
~10 windows open at a time. It doesn't matter if I recently rebooted or
not. Both pop-ups and main windows. Sometimes fully transparent, other
times it renders initially and then never again.

Now trying with Compiz "Animations" off to see if it makes a difference.

[Bug 1743183] Re: Mouse left button not being noticed when clicked under Wayland - works under x11

2018-01-17 Thread Mark Rogers
More info:

The issue is both at the login screen and within the wayland desktop.
Left mouse clicks on any part of the interface are not recognised, even
though I can move the mouse.

bug 1181666 sounds familiar however logouts/reboots do not reset the
mouse. It is as if the default starting setting for the mouse have
somehow disable left mouse clicks.

If from the login screen I select the X11 graphics subsystem then the
mouse works as expected.

The other thing is that the mouse was working normally under wayland in
17.10 up until I reported the bug - so something changed, and Im
guessing that change was in the low level mouse settings for wayland.

Hope that helps a little more.

BTW the files uploaded were generated under the X11 session, not the
wayland session.

Please let me know what you need me to do to generate any other
log/config file info you need.

Cheers

[Bug 1727237] [NEW] systemd-resolved is not finding a domain

2017-10-25 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Public bug reported:

I have an odd network situation that I have so far managed to narrow

[Bug 1333700] Re: X locks after dragging file out of file-roller to pcmanfm

2017-09-15 Thread Mark
I am seeing this in a fresh install of Lubuntu 17.04 64-bit, also when
trying to unpack Tor browser 7.0.5 (
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/7.0.5/tor-browser-linux64-7.0
.5_en-US.tar.xz ). I'm confirming the following characteristics
mentioned about this bug:

* Freeze triggers when mouse moves from file-roller to pcmanfm window.
* Mouse cursor movable but has locked icon, can't click on anything.
* Keyboard still works (can alt-tab between windows) but not spacebar or enter.
* Can do ctrl-alt-F1 to run 'killall file-roller' and unfreeze.

I downloaded the zip file from TimGS, above, and could drag-extract it
successfully the first time. But now on a second attempt it also causes
a freezing problem.

If it's relevant at all, this is on an Acer Aspire 5820TG laptop, with
encrypted disk.

Same issue in 17.04 (a clean install). Do not have this problem with the

Would greatly appreciate a fix for this, have been living with it now
for 6 months and, although no data is lost, it is REALLY annoying and
gives an impression of "flakiness". Only affects the desktop if I access
the dropbox folders from the icon in the system tray, if I go there
through the file manager all works ok.

[Bug 1633826] Re: nautilus desktop crashes when called with --no-desktop

2017-03-09 Thread mark simko
To confirm, this behavior is also happening on my system too. Ubuntu 16.10
When I open Dropbox from the indicator panel, all desktop icons disappear.
Cannot be brought back unless I log out and log back in.
Does not happen if I open dropbox folder from Nautilus (file manager) directly.

Re: [Bug 1663060] Re: Add a title field to snap metadata

IIRC, the idea was to capture the AppStream link in the store, and have
snapd query the store for that if asked? I'm happy to go forward with
that, no additional snap.yaml data needed.

Re: [Bug 1663060] Re: Add a title field to snap metadata

2017-02-14 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
OK. I have a feeling though that the apps: section is not ordered, which
means we need some other way to call out the "definitive" app for the
snap, i.e. the one which is represented in GNOME Software.

So it feels to me that we need:

 * a way to associate desktop files with the apps in the snap (i.e. a
'desktop-file' property of the app in the snap.yaml) which transcends
the 'command' property for the purposes of GUI shells and software stores.

 * a way to indicate which of the apps in the snap is the 'definitive'
one, the single one which should be represented in the store

Does that make sense?

I don't think we should assume that GNOME Software should run *anything*
from a snap unless there is a .desktop file for it. Lots of snaps will
not be appropriate to run in a GUI.

Re: [Bug 1663060] [NEW] Add a title field to snap metadata

Yeah yeah patches welcome :p

Would it be sensible to have title be an optional field, and use the
Capitalized name if it is not provided? In the past, we've seen it's
hard to get complete and accurate metadata when there is a lot of
duplication in the schema.

And yes, appstream would be welcome.

2017-02-07 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
OK, I'm +1 with that unless you have another suggestion. Could we put
the desktop file as an entry under the app command? I.e.

apps:
  foo:
desktop: path/to/file.desktop
command: bin/foo.py

One thing that seems awkward is the duplication of the command in the
desktop file and the apps stanza.

Re: [Bug 1581713] Re: Ubuntu Software always asks for an Ubuntu Single Sign-On account when installing or removing a snap package

2017-02-01 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Here is our thinking on Ubuntu Core devices and user accounts.

Ubuntu Core is largely for devices that operate with almost no human
interaction. You install the device, it updates itself forever, life is
good.

In that case, most devices will not have many or any user accounts.
That's completely different to a laptop or developer system, or a normal
server, which has many people who might log into it on any given day.

For that reason, having the user account on Ubuntu Core be single-sign
accounts makes sense. This is exactly the trend in the world - look at
modern wifi access points, for example. You get a single management
account, usually in the cloud, and you manage all devices through that.

The net effect is much better security for these devices. In due course,
we will reduce dependency on the Ubuntu SSO (this is just the current
implementation, we envisage enabling people to have their own identity
systems). But the base idea that you don't want to be setting a separate
username and password on these devices is very well reasoned and
appropriate.

[Bug 1618188] [NEW] systemd journal should be persistent by default: /var/log/journal should be created

2016-08-29 Thread Mark Stosberg
Public bug reported:

After upgrading 14.04 -> 16.04, key services are now running on systemd
and using the systemd journal for logging. In 14.04, key system logs
like /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog were persistent, but after
the upgrade to 16.04 there has a been a regression of sorts: Logs sent
to systemd's journald are now being thrown away during reboots.

This behavior is controlled by the `Storage=` option in
`/etc/systemd/journald.conf`. The default setting is `Storage=auto`
which will persist logs in `/var/log/journal/`, *only if the directory
already exists*. But the directory was not created as part of the 14.04
-> 16.04 upgrade, so logging was being lost for a while before I
realized what was happening.

This issue could be solved by either creating /var/log/journal or
changing the default Storage behavior to `Storage=persistent`, which
would create the directory if need be.

## Related reference

 * `systemd` currently compounds the issue by having ["journal --disk-usage"
report memory usage as disk
usage](https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4059), giving the impression
that the disk is being used for logging when it isn't.
 * [User wonders where to find logs from previous boots, unaware that the logs
were thrown
away](http://askubuntu.com/questions/765315/how-to-find-previous-boot-log-after-ubuntu-16-04-restarts)

## Recommended fix

Restoring persistent logging as the default is recommended.

[Bug 1589015] [NEW] Printer bug adds code into /var/tmp endlessly

2016-06-03 Thread Mark Preston
Public bug reported:

Canon Maxify MB2320 printer (all-in-one) causes or systemd causes lines
to be added to /var/tmp/ continuously. By constant, I mean whenever the
printer, or scanner, or copier function. I reported a bug at the Canon
Printer Community Forum for it's writing massively large files (starting
cnij) and filling /var/tmp to the point where / was complaining of no
space remaining. As these two problems may be linked I'm posting a
little about the cnij files, too. Please bear with me.

http://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Office-Printers/Maxify-MB2320-and-
driver/td-p/165313

The next problem occurs after I start a weekly removal of those cnij
files. When the device (printer) was first installed there were but 3 or
4 files in /var/tmp, no including the cnij-s.

That has now grown to 70+ lines. I append a few here, as they are
somewhat similar. If you wish to see all 70, they are at

I have asked for help at AskUbuntu and the Ubuntu Forums. At AskU I was
directed to report the bug here. Following the Launchpad reporting
guidelines:

Description:Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release: 16.04

mark@Lexington:/var/tmp$ apt-cache policy backups
N: Unable to locate package backups

I expected the backup to run as it has for years and years.

Backup reports fail message.

I am not aware of whether this is a security bug. I have left that box
unchecked.

There has been no response at Ubuntu Forums as yet. If there is one I
will add the relevant information as it becomes available.

Re: [Bug 1564067] Re: gvfsd-dnssd crashed with SIGSEGV in avahi_service_resolver_event()

2016-03-31 Thread Mark Skinner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 927340 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927340

Hi,

I connect to a dell port replicator and I get the error attached every
day, if not attached I get no error. Also twice a day the screen to the
right just starts turning off and on, if you disable in display settings
and on again it fixes it. Annoying but better than Windows rubbishy 10

Cheers,

[Bug 1467335] [NEW] Metadata for music files is randomly changed

2015-06-21 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

On two occasions now I have found that Rhythmbox has tagged music files
erroneously that were previously fine in iTunes and Windows 8. Here are

Thanks Mark, help me so much. :)

The problem is in the Bluetooth device address: The prefix (which
indicates the manufacturer) is different for your mouse. So the
workaround is add this line in the file
 /usr/share/gnome-bluetooth/pin-code-database.xml (close to the Wedge
 mouse entrance):
 device oui=28:18:78: type=mouse name=Microsoft Sculpt Comfort
 Mouse pin=/
Restart the system and try again to check if the problem persists. If
work well I will submit a patch for gnome-bluetooth.

Thanks for report this bug. :)
