[Bug 2060575] Re: gnome-keyring fails to automatically unlock login keyring after recent updates in noble

2024-04-13 Thread Martin Randau
But it can't be affecting all installations. I installed one or two dailies
before the beta. The error appeared after an upgrade. Currently fully upgraded.
Maybe just re-install... It's annoying to type the password three times at each
login. :D

[Bug 2054319] Re: System installed from jammy point release iso cannot upgrade to noble

2024-03-03 Thread Martin Malec
Having the same issue as in #7 (id: ‘polkitd’: no such user, chown:
invalid group: ‘root:polkitd’). Managed to apply workaround to move with
the test upgrade from this stuck place by creating polkitd system group
using `groupadd -r polkitd`.

[Bug 2045907] [NEW] GtkFileChooserDialog hangs on large folder with 300000 files

2023-12-07 Thread Martin M
Public bug reported:

when I paste filename into the location bar (Ctrl+L) the file chooser
hangs.

The file happens to be in a folder with 30 other files and
GtkFileChooserDialog
tries to offer a filename typing suggestion dropdown which is slow and
eventually crashes.

When I then kill chrome or firefox then wayland session gets logouted.

Ubuntu version is 23.10

2023-10-27 Thread Martin Randau
How do I go about getting this upgrade if I had installed the version
from Mario's ppa? I have proposed activated in sources.list and have
removed the ppa. But sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade does not show
the new packages. Shall I revert from Mario's version?

Can confirm that the fixes work. I added Mario's ppa, upgraded and
removed the line from /etc/environment. Would be nice if it was fixed in
the official Ubuntu repository.

[Bug 2036597] Re: Strange permissions and/or links to default directories in home folder (Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos))

2023-09-21 Thread Martin Randau
Seems like others recently have had the same issue on 22.04:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1483018/home-user-desktop-and-public-
folders-show-as-type-link-broken-inode-symlink

Also on 20.04: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1482903/home-directories-
turned-into-symbolic-links-without-telling-me-the-reason

These posts are recent ~1 month. Temporary fix is to have at least one
file in the folders so as to avoid them being deleted.

No, this is a fresh Mantic minimal install from 18/9 with all software
installed as snaps, except from MATLAB (propriety), RStudio (deb),
thinlinc (deb) and nautilus-dropbox (deb).

As I wrote above, I noticed that locale seems to be a mix of en_US and
en_DK and that even though I set it to en_DK in Settings, it reverts to
en_US.

[Bug 2036597] Re: Strange permissions and/or links to default directories in home folder (Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos))

2023-09-21 Thread Martin Randau
.config/user-dirs.dirs is rewritten at boot and logout/login and xdg-
user-dirs-update after correcting the file and logout/login does not re-
create the folders. It's not nautilus-dropbox since removing it does not
stop the error from occurring. Attaching a log from a boot where before
rebooting I had corrected user-dirs.dirs. When I logged in, my changes
were gone and the folders were again links to themselves. Note that
Pictures and Documents were not changed to links, probably because these
were non-empty.

[Bug 2036597] Re: Strange permissions and/or links to default directories in home folder (Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos))

2023-09-19 Thread Martin Randau
I installed it with default settings and locale but I just remembered that
after install I changed the locale to the English_Danish version. Since the
folders are restored now I won't try to replicate the error, but it seems
something went wrong when installing a new locale.

[Bug 2036597] Re: Strange permissions and/or links to default directories in home folder (Music, Pictures, Public, Templates and Videos))

2023-09-19 Thread Martin Randau
User-dirs-dirs looked strange:

martin@ThinkPad-P14s-Gen-3:~$ cat .config/user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/"

Changing it to:
martin@ThinkPad-P14s-Gen-3:~$ cat .config/user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

and running sudo xdg-user-dirs-update restored the folders with the
correct icons. No idea what caused this in the first place.

I have this issue on Ubuntu 23.10. Lock screen works only with an
external monitor connected. Otherwise the session is ended and the user
is logged out and brought to the gdm screen. Let me know what logs you
need.

[Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze when gnome-shell logs "Removing a network device that was not added"

2022-10-04 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
I have the same problem on 2 installs out of 3. And no "Removing a
network device that was not added" in /var/log/syslog.

I also found that the problem does not seem to occur on Xorg, only on
Wayland.

And I also found that the work around is to go to a console and then
back using (e.g.) ctrl-alt-F1 then ctrl-alt-F2.

[Bug 1288655] Re: Terminal height shrinks - repeatedly restored shorter than the previous height

2022-09-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Another surprising observation: Wayland seems to work just fine for me,
it's only X11 that has the maximization shrinking bug. 'headerbar' can
be true or false on Wayland with 22.04. I tried it on two different
installs with the same behavior.

Okay then. I guess I'll use Wayland. I liked to have the restart
feature which Wayland doens't have, but I think I'd rather not have this
gnome-terminal bug more than 'r'.

[Bug 1288655] Re: Terminal height shrinks - repeatedly restored shorter than the previous height

2022-09-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
@peterx14 I did a few more experiments. One needs a new gnome
session altogether for the 'headerbar' false change to work. I tried
this a few times to confirm. Just killing all the terminals is not
enough. However, when I login/out or kill gnome-session to restart the
session manager, the problem is fixed. The side effect is that one loses
all the nice gnome-terminal decoration (hamburger menu, find button,
etc.). Oh well. Take your choice.

2022-09-23 Thread Martin D. Weinberg
Hm, perhaps I misremembered the tweak. I do recall that 22.04 did not
work initially. I applied the dconf menu setting and it started to
work. I reset the dconf legacy menu setting just now and it still works
(i.e. no shrinking after maximization).  So I'm mystified . . .

The bug disappeared for some old installs but not all. For those that

dconf write /org/gnome/terminal/legacy/headerbar '@mb false'

2022-05-19 Thread Martin Zurowietz
I have g-c-c 1:41.4-1ubuntu13.2 installed but I'm not sure if the fix
works properly. If I start with Remote Desktop enabled and then disable
it in g-c-c, systemctl reports gnome-remote-desktop.service as "inactive
(dead)". If I log out and in again, g-c-c still has Remote Desktop
disabled (differently to what I originally reported). However, gnome-
remote-desktop.service is now "active (running)" again.

[Bug 1706770] Re: Lock screen can be bypassed when auto-login is enabled.

2022-04-08 Thread Martin Wimpress 
This issue is caused by the Users and Groups utility which is part of
`gnome-system-tools`. When changing the password from "Asked on logon"
to "Not asked on logon" the user is added to the `nopasswdlogin` group
and this is what causes the switch-user screen to not ask for a
password.

If you select the option to not require a password to login during
installation, it is not possible to bypass authentication when switching
users. This is because `autologin-user` is set to your username in
`/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf` and that works correctly.

`gnome-system-tools` was originally included in Ubuntu MATE because it
offers user and time management features. But it can now be removed from
the Ubuntu MATE default install because recent versions of MATE Control
Center provide user and time management.

[Bug 1873750] Re: Custom Application Launcher with Application in Terminal enabled should use user-specified terminal emulator

2022-04-06 Thread Martin Wimpress 
glib doesn't support `x-terminal-emulator` so the first found supported
terminal emulator (which will be mate-terminal in Ubuntu MATE) will be
used, regardless of what preferred applications or alternatives have
been configured.

This is why panels/launchers will favour mate-terminal in Ubuntu MATE.

[Bug 1854383] Re: Extra window decorations are created on windows with client-side decorations.

2022-03-24 Thread Martin Wimpress 
This issue is caused by `mate-maximus` which is part of the `mate-
netboot` package. `mate-netboot` doesn't get much upstream development
attention so unlikely to fixed in the near future.

Ubuntu MATE provides several resolution-efficient panel layouts, so
removing `mate-netbook` from Ubuntu MATE is the best option for
addressing this issue.

mate-netbook was removed from ubuntu-mate-meta 1.281:

[Bug 1960621] Re: MATE Desktop session fails to start with NVIDIA 495 & 510 drivers

2022-02-25 Thread Martin Wimpress 
I've built Metacity 3.42 for Ubuntu 21.10 with Xpresent support, which
is behind a gsettings option that defaults to xrender. When Metacity is
set as the required window manager in MATE with Xpresent set as the
compositor the same failure to bring up a desktop session is
encountered.

I have also built Marco without Xpresent and as expected it fallsback to
Xrender which works with the new NVIDIA drivers and also preserves
compositor support.

[Bug 1961770] [NEW] Evolution segfaults when trying to show the oauth screen for gmail

2022-02-22 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

I tried to add my gmail account to Evolution. It now segfaults on
launch, without any user interaction, when it tries to show the "Google
Mail authentication request" screen. The segfault seems to be caused by
loading the oauth authentication web page with webkitgtk.

Here's a stack trace from GDB (Note: Even though I have installed the
libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37-dbgsym package, the stack frames in
libwebkit2gtk-4.0.so.37 aren't properly symbolized for some reason):

Thread 1 "evolution" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

[Bug 1958166] Re: Nautilus not responding after unpacking and removing an archive

2022-01-17 Thread Martin Constantino–Bodin
Unexpectedly, the frozen Nautilus window reacts well with resizing and
such operations: it’s really just the interaction with tabs and files
that no longer work.

[Bug 1958166] [NEW] Nautilus not responding after unpacking and removing an archive

2022-01-17 Thread Martin Constantino–Bodin
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I was unpacking a .tar.gz archive with the “extract here” button. Once unpacked
(the progress bar on top right not only reached 100%, the dialogue box
disappeared altogether), I removed the archive file. The unpacking was a
success, and the extracted folder appeared on Nautilus, but Nautilus froze.
Impossible to change tab, or to select any file in the current folder.
Strangely enough, the window did not go black with a “Window not responding”
message as they usually do in Gnome-shell: it just did not reacted to any of my
input.
I was able to open a new window of Nautilus, and it worked. It’s just
frustrating as I had 7 tabs pointed to very different location: I had to reopen
all of these by hand.
Regards,
Martin.

[Bug 1949262] Re: Power Savings doesn't turn monitor off on NUC8i5INH

2021-11-17 Thread Martin Heckenbach
I run Ubuntu Budgie 21.10. Since two days before turning off display
after idle went well (DPMS mode).

Since yesterday turning off display doesn't work anymore. The display
goes black for a second but then it comes back again. However, the
screen is frozen (no repainting) as long as I use the desktop, e.g.
keyboard, mouse movements.

I guess that this is related to a recent update of libmutter. There has
been an update (see /var/log/apt/history.log):

Start-Date: 2021-11-17  04:50:38

System is also an Intel NUC (NUC8I3) but I don't think that it is
limited to this setup.

I had a simular problem earlier with Ubuntu 21.04 and Kodi media center
(see also https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/19479). I have closed this
issue a few days before since I though it was finally solved. This time
there is no output when I watch the events by using xev.

[Bug 1949966] [NEW] sshfs randomly corrupts files

2021-11-05 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

/usr/bin/sshfs the way it is packaged now is broken, tested on 20.04
focal and 21.10 impish.

This issue is not present on Debian Sid or Arch Linux.

The way the issue shows is that majority of the time, a 40MB .zip file I
download from an SFTP server is broken. The stat is identical, filesize
is identical to the byte, but the inside is a garbled mess that refuses
to unzip anymore. Tested via (and almost always getting a random
checksum):

  md5sum /mnt/file.zip && umount /mnt/sftp && mount /mnt/sftp && md5sum
/mnt/file.zip

I used a definition in fstab but also manually mounted via 'sshfs -o
allow_other,default_permissions'

This is not a kernel issue, this is not a network issue, I have tested
in containers and across servers.

Unfortunately, I do not have administrative access to the server I am
testing against, so this is the only idea I have about it:

  Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version CrushFTPSSHD

The workaround is to replace the /usr/bin/sshfs binary(and adding an
accompanying libfuse3.so to the correct path) from Arch Linux.

This should be an sshfs issue, not a libfuse issue, as copying libfuse2
from Arch does not make the issue disappear.

[Bug 1938683] [NEW] dash number-of-windows indicator not cleared for thunderbird

2021-08-02 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

The "number of windows" indicator in the Ubuntu Dash (the orange dots to
the left of the app icon) is not cleared for Thunderbird, when a new
e-mail is written in a new window. Ultimately, the indicators stay
visible even after Thunderbird is closed completely, and it's no longer
possible to launch thunderbird by left-clicking of the dash icon
(middle-click works okay).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch Thunderbird. There is one orange dot to the left of the thunderbird
icon.
2. Write an e-mail and close the e-mail window
3. Observe that there are now two orange dots to the left of the thunderbird
icon.

Please see the screenshot for more details.

[Bug 1883174] Re: Some (or all) desktop icons are missing

2021-07-02 Thread martin turyagyenda
I have gotten a lazy way around this, it is not really a fix but it
works. Around Feb this year(2021) or march give or take I had the same
problem but when I read through the ubuntu community and then others
like me who never made a fresh install from 14 lts then to 18 then to
20. I was highly sure that I had missed something .. being a windows
user originally my first instinct was to create a new folder just like
was recommended, I did that for a while and it worked . however the
system prompted me to upgrade a few times then it worked perfect, all
was showing. But after a while I got the same issues again from an
upgrade from the main server. Trust me, all I did was right click-create
new folder-name it then when it was created and all my desktop folders
came back. it is lazy but it works mostly when you have upgraded from
previous version

I disabled the extensions you listed and could still reproduce it. Then
I also started to disable the extensions shipped with Ubuntu, it also
happens with 'Ubuntu Dock' disabled.

However, at least right now, I cannot reproduce it when 'Desktop Icons

[Bug 1928312] Re: ghost compose window with wayland

2021-05-13 Thread Martin Kaistra
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  After writing a new email and sending it, gnome still sees the compose
window, even though it is really closed.
  * Ubuntu Dock has an additional dot next to the thunderbird logo
  * Clicking in the top bar on Thunderbird has the compose window listed under
"Open windows"
  * Using get_windows() in looking glass on the thunderbird app object gets 2
objects of MetaWindowWayland

  Even after closing the main window of thunderbird, the ghost window is still
there (dot next to thunderbird logo in ubuntu dock), which means Ubuntu Dock is
not launching thunderbird on single left click any more.
  Right click on the thunderbird logo in this state just opens an action window
which doesn't respond to any clicks.
  Only logging out and back in seems to restore normal behavior.

  This is happening since upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04 and using wayland by
default. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but often enough for me to be able
to collect additional information if necessary.

[Bug 1927276] [NEW] Drag-and-drop from Nautilus causes Mutter to close Wayland connections

2021-05-05 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

When dragging a file from Nautilus to another window (either another
Nautilus window or a GNOME Terminal window), and you hold down the alt
key while dropping, Mutter closes the connection to the target
application (which GDK handles by calling `_exit(1)` unconditionally).

When the target application is a GNOME Terminal window, the entire GNOME
Terminal Server exits, so all terminal windows close. This is likely to
lead to data loss (I have personally experienced having many very
important terminal windows with neovim just close because I dared to
drag and drop a file into another terminal window instead of typing out
the path).

I made an issue upstream:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1789, but I thought it
should be in Launchpad as well.

[Bug 1922952] Re: issue about diskspace 21.04

2021-04-21 Thread Lars Martin Hambro
But can you tell? What should linux operatingsystem do if i only get 60
GB free space or less home folder should i expect crash and programs did
not works?

I think its hard to find out why linux did not boot. Only issue that can get on
diskspace:
OSError: [Errno 28] none diskspace.
But i know its issue with fedora 34 beta too that some programs crash if home
folder is used up.

I also know its issue about kubuntu on some system with AMD but did not find
out why, because its works with gnome and some other desktop system.
But i did not get much answer how to test.

Did you agree Apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Or some other did have poor tools to fix broked KDE desktop? Some other say
reinstall System if only KDE or Unity failed but i hope you can give help.

[Bug 1923347] [NEW] Selecting an area on the desktop is broken on multi-monitor setups in X11

2021-04-11 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

This is a new bug as of yesterday or the day before. If I select an area
on the desktop on my rightmost monitor, the origin point of the
selection is placed correctly at the cursor position, but other point is
offset by the width of the leftmost monitor (see attached screenshot).

Basically, the origin point is correctly at (cursor X, cursor Y), but
the other point is at (cursor X + monitor offset X, cursor Y + monitor
offset Y).
