Tested on a Dell netbook (1024x600) and a Macbook Pro (1920x1200). Seems
to work very well on both, some minor jpeg compression artifacts are
still visible, but to much lesser extent than previously. Overall, the
background is much smoother.

Kenneth, exactly. Mute is a special state invoked by hitting a mute key.
The difference between the two must be reflected with an appropriate
icon.
