Fixed by upgrading python-gobject to 3.0.0-0ubuntu4. Same here. Also, even opening local subtitles doesn't work for DVDs. Public bug reported: $GEDIT_SELECTED_TEXT variable used in snippets does not work correctly for non-ascii characters.
