[Bug 897322] Re: PDF saved forms are not compatible with Adobe Reader

2013-04-06 Thread NoOp
With US Tax season in full swing I found that the Ubuntu 12.04 Acroread
 Evince versions cannot display the checkbox tickmarks in the fillable
tax forms therefore making it impossible to use Ubuntu for filling out
the forms:

http://www.irs.gov/Forms--Pubs

Typical form:
http://www.irs.gov/file_source/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

I had no such issues with Acroread 9.5.4 and Evince 3.4.0 in Fedora
17... Two years is long enough, so I've given up waiting switched to
Fedora.

[Bug 886327] Re: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

2012-12-20 Thread NoOp
re comment #9: It's a *regression*, PLEASE FIX. Unmounting a USB stick,
etc, having Nautilus close as a result is nuts. None of your 'valid
solutions' are vaild. Here, try this:

1. Open Nautilus in the morning.
2. Add a few tabs. Spend about half of the day using Nautilus associated
tabs.
3. Insert a USB stick. Do whatever you need to do with the device.
4. Now unmount that USB stick. Poof! your Nautilus session and work is now
gone. Everything that you'd been working on in Nautilus is gone.
5. Reopen Nautilus spend the next 10 minutes (or more) resetting Nautilus to
the same working state.

 It's a *regression* *not* a wish listissue.

2012-11-12 Thread NoOp
I'll probably get my hands slapped for this; but in the interim you can
create an alias so that you do not have to type 'gksudo gksudo' or 'gksu
gksu' each time:

$ gedit ~/.bashrc

Scroll down the the alias section add the last two lines shown here:

# some more ls aliases
#alias ll='ls -l'
#alias la='ls -A'
#alias l='ls -CF'
alias gksudo='gksudo gksudo'
alias gksu='gksu gksu'

Save  exit. Then:

$ . ~/.bashrc
Note that there is a space following the first dot (.).

If you have a USB flash drive, etc., mounted, and right click within
nautilus and close this *causes whole window to close* - meaning that
nautilus dismisses you will have lost any *all* work (tabs etc) within
that nautilus session and have to start over. Please reconsider. How
can this remain a 'Low' priority when work is lost simply by performing
an action that worked perfectly fine in 11.04.

Is there anyway to pin down what caused the change in nautilus from
(1:2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13) between (1:3.2.1-0ubuntu4.2)
 or nautilus (1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5)?

[Bug 886327] Re: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

2012-06-28 Thread NoOp
Actually no - I didn't mean to comment of the bugzilla page. The related
upstream is Two years and still UNCONFIRMED, however it appears that
Ubuntu are awaiting for upstream to resolve rather than spending any
resource/time on the bug. The Triaged tag that you added was nearly
7 months ago (2011-11-30.

The bug is also tagged Wishlist (tagged by you on 2011-11-08). The
upstream isn't tagged as 'Wishlist and is instead tagged as 'Normal.
What gives you the impression that this action with Nautilus should be a
Wishlist?

[Bug 886327] Re: Nautilus window closes when unmounting currently explored filesystem

2012-06-27 Thread NoOp
Two years and still UNCONFIRMED?
 Bug 611569 - Nautilus window quits on unmounting [when partition is launched
from places menu]
Product:nautilus
Component:  general
Version:3.2.x
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Priority:   Normal
Severity:   normal
Description Vish [reporter] 2010-03-02 09:08:49 UTC

Really?

Just upgraded several systems to 12.04 and ran across this bug.

$ apt-cache policy nautilus
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1:3.4.2-0ubuntu3

Multiple mounts, multiple tabs, multiple shares all go 'poof' if I
unmount a single mount (including a mount on the same drive/machine).

[Bug 897322] Re: PDF saved forms are not compatible with Adobe Reader

2012-05-20 Thread NoOp
@Sebastien re comment #8: Let me see if I have this correct - Ubuntu package
and provide Evince via the Main repository.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince

Last I looked, this means that the software is Officially supported and
distributed by Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

Ubuntu users have already taken time to report and add comments to this bug
report. I suggest that it's time that the maintainers of the application:

Package information

Maintainer:
Ubuntu Developers

report and/or deal with any upstream issues.

It would be nice if the application maintainer(s) did the simple test
of opening a PDF form (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf works
just fine), in Evince, fill in the form (or at least parts of it), save
the form, and attempt to open the saved form in acroread, Adobe Reader,
Adobe Acrobat, etc. Simple, not difficult to do, and *then* the package
maintainer(s) - those who understand the development packaging of
Evince - file a report upstream. Thank you.

With the US Tax season less than two weeks away, I can only wonder how
many tax pdf forms will get mangled by Evince in the process. It's
obvious that the Evince maintainers do not consider this issue as
critical... Can someone with authority *please* bump this issue up to
'Critical' and assign a developer to review/resolve?

[Bug 897322] Re: PDF saved forms are not compatible with Adobe Reader 10.1.1

2012-02-02 Thread NoOp
This issue also affects acroread 9.4. I get the same error opening the
attached form, in Comment #1:

$ apt-cache policy acroread
acroread:
  Installed: 9.4.6-0maverick1
  Candidate: 9.4.6-0maverick1
  Version table:
 *** 9.4.6-0maverick1 0

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.32.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages

I experienced the issue when filling in US Tax forms - sample:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf
Opened first in acroread filled in form data. Later opened with Evince,
changed some of the form data, did a 'Save as' - file saved. File opens fine in
Evince, but attempting to reopen the file in acroread 9.4.6 (and Adobe Reader
9.4 - Windows) results in the error message:
There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this
document (14).

This is a serious issue as Evince corrupts valid PDF files afterwards
the file cannot be shared with others that may not have Evince (i.e.,
Windows users with Adobe Reader).

2011-10-30 Thread NoOp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 761836 ***

Same issue on both natty and oneiric (32bit and 64bit). Why is this bug
marked as a duplicate of #761836 (Gtk-WARNING when running with sudo).
gedit is a gtk graphic application gksu/gksudo is the proper command,
sudo is not advised can cause issues with .ICEauthority.

$ gksudo gedit /etc/fstab

The 'Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: pixmap,'
warnings are resolved by:
$ sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf
per: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/quickly/+bug/853232

$ gksudo gedit /etc/fstab

(gedit:2048): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into
`/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create
file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.F0Y13V': No such file or
directory

(gedit:2048): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of
`/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or
directory

The workaround of:

$ sudo mkdir -p /root/.local/share

does work. However, a user shouldn't need to do that to run '$ gksudo
gedit'.

[Bug 708747] Re: *Lots* of DEBUG messages from GsmDBusClient

2011-09-01 Thread NoOp
Just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and 'DEBUG: GsmDBusClient:
obj_path=/org/freedesktop/DBus interface=org.freedesktop.DBus
method=NameOwnerChanged' messages are spamming .xsession-errors. At
first I thought it might be a user configuration issue, so I created a
new user and logged in. I watched the log go from around 60 KB - I've
only logged in with this user for a short amount of time and the file is
now at 183.5 MB and growing!

The system is using Ubuntu Classic (it doesn't have the graphics for
Unity).

Shut it down at 247.2MB. Also figured out how to trigger at will; open
~/.xsession-errors using gedit. This does not happen on my 10.10

[Bug 691482] Re: Brasero Disc Burner wrongly named

2011-08-20 Thread NoOp
If you open Nautilus|Preferences|Media|Other Media|Type:blank CD
disk|Action: you'll see an option for 'Open CD/DVD Creator'. And the
selection comes from '~/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:
x-content/blank-dvd=brasero-nautilus.desktop
Looking further into brasero-nautilus.desktop:
$ cat /usr/share/applications/brasero-nautilus.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=CD/DVD Creator
Comment=Create CDs and DVDs
Categories=GNOME;GTK;System;
TryExec=nautilus
Exec=nautilus --no-default-window --no-desktop burn:///
Icon=system-file-manager
MimeType=x-content/blank-cd;x-content/blank-dvd;x-content/blank-bd;x-content/blank-hddvd;
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
NoDisplay=true
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Bugzilla=GNOME
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Product=brasero
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Component=general
X-GNOME-Bugzilla-Version=2.32.0
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=brasero

nautilus-cd-burner seems to be the original 'CD/DVD Creator':

[Bug 691482] Re: Brasero Disc Burner wrongly named

As a test I purged brasero:
$ sudo apt-get purge brasero

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  brasero*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 606kB disk space will be freed.

$ cat /usr/share/applications/brasero-nautilus.desktop
cat: /usr/share/applications/brasero-nautilus.desktop: No such file or directory

Then inserted a blank CD nautilus prompted to open CD/DVD Creator.
Allowed it to do that, dragged a picture folder to it, burned the cd,
ejected reinserted all files are fine. So aparently it *isn't*
brasero that is doing the cd burning from nautilus?

Checking further I see that purging brasero doesn't include purging:

brasero-common
libbrasero-media1
brasero-cdrkit

I'll purge those  try again.

[Bug 367037] Re: Error while burning - some files may be corrupted on the disc

2011-08-20 Thread NoOp
Regarding comment #24: This is not a 'false alarm' but actually may not
be related to brasero.

In performing several tests related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/691482
[Brasero Disc Burner  wrongly named]
I encountered the checksum errors. Sample:

BraseroReadom disconnecting BraseroReadom from BraseroChecksumImage
BraseroReadom deactivating
BraseroChecksumImage called brasero_job_get_current_track
BraseroChecksumImage Setting new checksum (type = 2)
631bb631ab92d6b965051b4b42346158 (a2c9eb7d63f603b6f9ae4b3deb3d2d48 before)
BraseroChecksumImage called brasero_job_error
BraseroChecksumImage finished with an error
BraseroChecksumImage asked to stop because of an error
error   = 27
message = Some files may be corrupted on the disc
BraseroChecksumImage stopping
BraseroChecksumImage closing connection for BraseroChecksumImage
Session error : Some files may be corrupted on the disc
(brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2862)

However, when burning a CD using the exact same files using brasero
(rather than CD/DVD Creator offered in nautilus) as a 'Data disc' the
operation burn works fine (with the exception of brasero's failure to
eject the disc properly
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/519935). So it's
possible that complaints regarding brasero may actually be related to
the nautilus CD/DVD Creator application instead.

[Bug 720344] Re: [Remote Desktop Viewer] Copy paste results in graphic chars

2011-08-15 Thread NoOp
My test environment is rather limited. However here is what I've tested:

Remote: Maverick
Local: Natty
Copy paste from Maverick to Natty works. Copy paste from Natty to Maverick
results in graphics chars.

Remote: Maverick
Local: Oneiric
Copy paste from Maverick to Oneiric works. Copy paste from Oneiric to
Maverick results in graphics chars.

Sorry, I don't have any Natty-Natty or Oneiric-to-Oneiric setups.

So the problem appears to be within the Maverick verison. Any way to
test the Natty version in Maverick?

[Bug 720344] Re: [Remote Desktop Viewer] Copy paste results in graphic chars

2011-08-15 Thread NoOp
As an experiment I installed the natty version of vinagre on maverick:
$ apt-cache policy vinagre
vinagre:
  Installed: 2.30.3-1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.30.3-1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.3-1ubuntu2 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.30.2-1ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages

from:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/vinagre

No difference. Perhaps the problem is in vino instead? Attempted to
install the natty vino, but cannot due to dependency issues.

Re: [Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems

2011-07-26 Thread NoOp
On 07/26/2011 01:53 PM, Till Kamppeter wrote:
 Aldi, please see bug 668800 about remaining rendering slowness problems.
 This is fixed in the newest version of Ghostscript (which is already
 included in Oneiric). See also the appropriate upstream bug
 http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=690475. In addition,
 Ghostscript's rendering gets faster by adding -dNOINTERPOLATE to the
 Ghostscript command line (see comment in the end of the upstream bug).
 In Oneiric this is now done in all printer drivers and print filters
 which use Ghostscript, so here overall printing (except native
 PostScript printers fed with PostScript jobs) should get significantly
 faster.

Till, will any of this be backported to Maverick Natty?

2011-07-16 Thread NoOp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 725584 ***

I think this bug is more of a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/649809/+index?comments=all
rather than 725584. I have same issues on VirtualBox 4.012 with Natty guest.
After reading through all of 649809 I've found that if I set gdm to autologin
everything works. With default manual login (Ubuntu Classic / Gnome) I
experience the gnome-settings-daemon issue.

I should add that the autologin trick only works for the first login. If
you log out of the session and back in the original issue occurs and
then you need to apply #6 again.

The update on the 64bit machine did not show as being from Backports on
the Udate Manager as it does on the 32bit machines. Remove Backports on
the 64bit machine and the 2.30.5-0ubuntu4.1+langfixes~maverick1 still
shows (under Security). Installed w/o issue. On the 32bit machines the
issue from my comment #11 remains had to use 'dpkg-reconfigure -a' to
get all working again as 'dpkg-reconfigure locale' did not stick on
logout/reboot.

[Bug 682272] Re: [SeaMonkey/Mozilla] gnome-default-applications.xml defaults for mail-reader does not handle URL mailto links properly

2011-03-30 Thread NoOp
Sebastien, please explain the handler system has be rewriten in the
current version though which deprecate that issue. /usr/share/gnome-
control-center/default-apps/gnome-default-applications.xml is part of
the gnome-control-center package so what 'specifically' are you
referring to having to be rewritten? I've already advised on the test
case, how to reproduce, and the required modification to correct the
problem. Have you actually attempted to reproduce?

[Bug 682272] [NEW] [SeaMonkey/Mozilla] gnome-default-applications.xml defaults for mail-reader does not handle URL mailto links properly

2010-11-27 Thread NoOp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

 apt-cache policy gnome-control-center
gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

Also tested with:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/capplets-data
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/capplets-data

/usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml
defaults for mail-reader settings are:

 executableseamonkey/executable
  commandseamonkey -mail %s/command
  icon-nameseamonkey/icon-name
  run-in-terminalfalse/run-in-terminal
/mail-reader

The line:
commandseamonkey -mail %s/command
is incorrect and causes mailto from other browsers (Firefox etc) to fail to
bring up SeaMonkey compose email when a 'mailto' url is clicked.

This line should be modified to read:
commandseamonkey -compose %s/command

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install configure SeaMonkey via the universe repositories:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/seamonkey
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/seamonkey

2. Configure a valid email account in SeaMonkey verify that it is
working properly.

3. In  System|Preferences|Preferred Applications|Mail Reader| set to SeaMonkey.
Note that the 'Command:' section is set for:
'seamonkey -mail %s'.

4. Open Firefox and click a valid 'mailto' link:
http://www.ubuntu.com/contact-us
  [Web feedback - webmas...@ubuntu.com]
  mailto:webmas...@ubuntu.com

Due to the incorrect '-mail %s' in nome-default-applications.xml, the action
will fail to launch an email compose window in SeaMonkey.

5. Modify /usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml ($
gksu gedit /usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml) to
reflect the recommended change:
commandseamonkey -compose %s/command

6. Repeat step #3 above and note that the 'Command:' section is now set for:
'seamonkey -compose %s'. Repeat step #4 above note that the result is that
SeaMonkey now opens an email compose window with 'webmas...@ubuntu.com' in the
'To:' address box.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2010-10-19 Thread NoOp
Successful login sound (Ubuntu theme) can be disabled (on Maverick 10.10) via:
rename desktop-login.ogg (/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo) to
desktop-login.ogg_bak
for the drums
rename system-ready.ogg to system-ready.ogg_bak

It's a regression should be fixed - the GUI methods do not work.
IMO these sounds should simply be *disabled* by default. Leaving them enabled
is both irritating and seems to try to replicate (and aggrivate users) Windows
with these silly startup login/logout sounds. Nothing more embarassing than
firing up your laptop in a college class, business meeting, etc., with sound
way up and having everyone turn around and look at you while Ubuntu runs
through it's silly drum roll login theme. As mentioned in #87, perhaps I'll
just replace with the Windows sounds instead... at least that way I can claim
that I'm a poor Windows user that doesn't know how to turn off these sounds on
my Windows OS.

Don't know. I no longer install/test 10.10 due to

Still not working on Evolution 2.28.3 - lucid 2.6.32-22-generic.
Move filters work, label not applied at all now.

If I right-click on the message subject and select 'Label' I can see
that the proper label is checked/ticked (in this case 'Important - red'
but the color is not applied unless I apply to the individual msg per my

[Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-27 Thread NoOp
@Stefan: given that you are running an nvidia card, your issue may be related
to mine. I've filed a separate bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96/+bug/585685
Have a look at that see if perhaps it may be caused by your nvidia-173
driver. If so then it's something common between the -96 and -173 drivers.

[Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-24 Thread NoOp
I am exeriencing the same issue - with the exception that both the
keyboard and mouse go dead as well. If there is another bug report the
more closely matches my symptions, please advise.

Steps to reproduce:
1. While logged in as user A, System|Log Out username|Switch User
2. Login to user B, ensure all is working properly and logout from user B.
- screen goes black
- keyboard no longer works
- mouse no longer works

100% reproduceable.

However, I can:
1. ssh -X into the machine w/o issue. I can bring up gui's from the affected
machine (i.e., gnome-system-log, vino-preferences, etc).
2. remote login to the machine via VNC and get a screen; however I then get
multiple tserver instances have to kill it.
3. reboot the machine from the remote ssh.

Attempted to use 'apport-collect 546578' to supply additional info, but
response was that I wasn't a subscriber to this bug (I am) and the
report was a duplicate (it isn't). So I'll manually add the bits that

If you read the *original* description of this bug report the *symptoms*

2010-03-21. 553200 wasn't opened until April 1st, and while there was
some speculation that the video driver may have created the problem,
(comment #67) it wasn't until Chris Thomson pointed out that disabling
the nvidia driver correct his problem that I tried the same with the
same results. comment #88 later pointed to 55320. Unsubscribing now.

From what I could understand from the bug trail so far, your problem
 seems to be that custom.conf gets broken as soon as you change
 something. However, you obfuscated your custom.conf in the bug trail
 (like in comment 42) to say username instead of the actual
 username, so it's not clear to me whether it had a working one or an
 invalid one (which seemed to be the case in the meantime).

 So, I understand that right now you have working autologin for the
 gg or ggserv user. What do you try to to in gdmsetup (please
 describe the exact steps), how does custom.conf look before and after?
 I. e. in which steps can you reproduce the broken custom.conf?

 Martin

I'm not sure what exactly you aren't understanding; I'v described the
exact steps multiple times tested using multiple scenarios and logins.
In the simplest terms, the symptoms are exactly as Chris Thompson has
described.

So as to remove any confusion regarding multiple users on the system
I've deleted/removed *all* users with the exception of 'gg'. Set
autologin to off (prompt for username at gdm startup), and the symptoms
are exactly as prevously described by me and the others on this report.
  In order to get to the desktop I then have to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a
console, 'sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf' and change it back to
'AutomaticLoginEnable=true', 'sudo stop gdm', 'sudo start gdm'. That
gets you to the desktop, then go back to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1),
logout of the console '$ exit', and use Ctrl-Alt-F8 to get back to the
desktop.

 How did it get there, was that damaged this way with System -

I'd modified it by hand. I had taken your Can you please check

avoid further confusion in troubleshooting this bug I've changed it back
to 'gg'.

Yes.

 Ah, that would explain it, too. You can try deleting
 ~/.config/monitors.xml, which will not touch the resolution during
 login any more.

Tried that - No change. Checked the other users monitors.xml isn't in
their ~/.config.
  However, I wouldn't expect that to make any difference anyway as that
is user dependent. As mentioned, the situation occurs even when
custom.conf is reset to log in as another user on reboot also occurs
when I create a new user. I've also tested on the system side by using
the previous karmic xorg.conf and also tested by moving xorg.conf
completely out of the way.

 Yes.

 So what's actually left for you on this bug?

To get the gdm menu working :-) The above is from the console. I can:

1. Change the custom.conf to any of the valid users while in the desktop
(after getting there by autologin first). Example, from the 'gg'
desktop, change to 'ggserv':

[daemon]
AutomaticLogin=ggserv
AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=ggserv
TimedLoginDelay=30
DefaultSession=gnome.desktop

2. Ctrl-Alt-F1-6 and get to the console and login as 'gg' (that username
has admin privileges). Note: I can also use nano to change custom.conf
after console login of course.

3. 'sudo stop gdm' then 'sudo start gdm' that will bring up the 'ggserv'
desktop.

If I want to switch back to 'gg' I cannot use the gdm menu, I must go
back to the console, change the custom.conf again back to 'gg'
(Ctrl-Alt-F1), and then start/stop gdm to get back to the 'gg' desktop.

Confusing, but that is the only way that I can switch to another user.

[Bug 516520] Re: pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed

2010-04-07 Thread NoOp
Ah, got it. I'll leave the machine in it's exisiting state for further testing.
It's not a primary machine (right now) so it's not a problem for me to continue
troubleshooting if it can help. BTW: no issues with my nvidia-96 drivers
w/regard to compiz et al. But a user on the users list mentioned that he
fix'ed his issue:
quote
I had exactly the same problem on a desktop pc after an upgrade from
9.04 to 9.10.
For some unknown reason, the screen resolution has been modified during
the upgrade process to an unsupported value.
I changed the screen resolution according the monitor's specs and the
login loop problem disappeared.
/quote
Not sure if that is related to this particular bug, but thought it worth
mentioning.

[Bug 516520] Re: pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed

2010-04-07 Thread NoOp
@Sebastien: not sure exactly what you are asking. If you mean 'no
autologin' and at the gdm menu, Ctrl-Alt-F1-6, login at the console
then '$ startx', no it does not work.

$ startx

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
  If this server is already running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
  and start again.
etc., etc.

However:

$ sudo stop gdm
gdm stop/waiting
$ startx

does work. So you need to kill off gdm before using startx.

 NoOp,

 thanks, the PAM related files/outputs look alright. Can you please check
 if your /etc/gdm/custom.conf still tries to log in the laptop user
 automatically? Also, can you try changing DefaultSession=gnome to
 DefaultSession=gnome.desktop? (Log into a text terminal with
 Ctrl+Alt+F1 and do sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf).

 Finally, do you have the ubuntu-desktop package installed?

Modified custom.conf to:

[daemon]
AutomaticLogin=laptop
AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=laptop
TimedLoginDelay=30
DefaultSession=gnome.desktop

rebooted and the session results in bringing up the standard gdm menu
list. Selected gg-main and it goes into the loop. Ctrl-Alt-F1 to console
- log in as gg,
- 'sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf',
- change from 'laptop' to 'gg',
- 'sudo stop gdm' and then 'sudo start gdm'
- back into user 'gg' desktop.

Yes, I have ubuntu-destop version:
$ apt-cache policy ubuntu-desktop
ubuntu-desktop:
  Installed: 1.195
  Candidate: 1.195
  Version table:
 *** 1.195 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

installed.

[Bug 516520] Re: pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed

2010-04-06 Thread NoOp
Martin: as a test I created the user 'laptop' modified the custom.conf
accordingly. Autologin to that username works (standard login does not),
but if I try to switch to another user from 'laptop' (ggserv for
example) I get the same results; gdm loops sends me back to the
switcher password to get back into 'laptop'. Ctl-Alt-F1, login as 'gg'
change custom.conf to 'gg', stop/start gdm puts me to the 'gg'
desktop, go back to the console exit F8 gets me back to the 'gg'
desktop. I can repeat for the other usernames.

I then deleted 'laptop' (including home folder files), switch user from
'gg' and gdm menu still showing 'laptop'. So apparently deleting a user
from the Users Settings isn't working, there is no 'laptop' in /home but
I bring up Users Settings after reboot and I see that 'laptop' is still
listed as a user.
