I had to install:

ttf-kochi-gothic
ttf-kochi-mincho
ttf-sazanami-gothic
ttf-sazanami-mincho
ttf-umefont ttf-mona

and do:

$ sudo fontconfig-voodoo -f -s ja_JP

output is not excellent, but characters are visible.
