2020-05-18 Thread Pablo San Martín
On Ubuntu 20.04, I had the issue of copy-paste working every other time,
specifically on LibreOffice apps (Writer, Calc and Draw), not in any
other apps (Gedit, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.) or in the GNOME Shell.

However, disabling the Clipboard Indicator extension fixed this for me.

** Description changed:

+ Reported upstream as issue 2062
+ (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues/2062)
+
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS here, fully updated (as of late Jan 2020).
  TEST #1:
To establish a baseline/expected behavior, we first mount an SMB share via
mount.cifs and time an ls command:
  $ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=pablo //myserver.example.com/share
~/mnt/share
  $ cd ~/mnt/share/some/dir
  $ time ls
  ... approx 320 files ...
  real 0m1,080s
  user 0m0,008s
  sys 0m0,005s
  $ sudo umount ~/mnt/share

  TEST #2
Now we do the same via gio mount:
  $ gio mount smb://myserver.example.com/share
  cd
/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share\:server\=myserver.example.com\,share\=share/some/dir
  $ time ls
  ... same 320 files ...
  real 0m28,999s
  user 0m0,013s
  sys 0m0,032s

Enumeration of files is about 29 times slower when mounted via gio mount
  than via mount -t cifs.

  TEST #3
Now for the real weird: while using the gio-mounted folder, we now time ls IN
COMBINATION WITH SOMETHING ELSE (can be strace ls, ls|wc etc...):
  $ time ls | wc
     321 3239804

  real 0m0,546s
  user 0m0,006s
  sys 0m0,004s

Note that this is almost TWICE AS FAST than the "fast" mount of test #1
and about 53 times faster than "slow" test #2 !

The expectation is that Tests 1 and 2 should have similar timings, not
differing by a factor of 30 or so. More disturbing, there is no good
reason why tests 2 and 3 differ by an even bigger factor of 53: They use
the same underlying infrastructure which test 3 proves is adequately
fast. And yet, we get this slow down in test 2.

As a final note, these benchmarks are a distilled version of the original
real-life motivating scenario where a Java-based program would simply take tens
of minutes to display the same list of 320 files when mounted via gio mount and
a second or so when mounted via mount -t cifs.
The same timing difference is of course visible in any file manager.

  Hope this helps

PS: several old/ancient bug reports exist for a similar issue and I
deliberately copied the title from one of them (#259771)

PS2: may or may not be relevant: The remote server is a VM running
Windows 7 (yes, I know...) and the connection was made via VPN (Ubuntu
  stock SSTP).

PS3: Another data point (server is now a Synolgy NAS, not a Win7 VM)

  $ gio mount smb://nas.example.com/share2

  $ cd /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-
  share\:server\=nas.example.com\,share\=share2/another/path

  $ time ls

  ... 528 subdirs approximately ...

  real 0m45,075s
  user 0m0,013s
  sys 0m0,058s

  $ time ls | wc
- 5281631 10893
+ 5281631 10893

  real 0m0,911s
  user 0m0,003s
  sys 0m0,005s

  Factor is about 50.

[Bug 1862264] Re: Browsing smb share is painfully slow

2020-02-12 Thread Pablo Copissa
Looks like gio is part of glib, not gvfs, so changed the package accordingly.
Also made clear in the title that gio vs mount is part of the issue.

** Package changed: gvfs (Ubuntu) => glib2.0 (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- Browsing smb share is painfully slow
+ Browsing smb share is painfully slow when mounted via "gio" (compared with
"mount")

[Bug 1823793] [NEW] Font scaling not working on gnome startup

2019-04-08 Thread Juan Pablo Aroztegi
Public bug reported:

The font text scaling setting is not being loaded on gnome startup. I
have font text scaling set to 1.25. After updating mutter to package
version 3.32.0-1ubuntu1 the text scaling setting is not loaded any more
when starting gnome. Steps to reproduce the issue:

1) Set your font scaling factor to something other than the default '1'.
This can be set, for example, either by using "Gnome tweaks" or with
gsettings:

settings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.25

2) You'll see that the top bar text gets larger.
3) Log out and log in. You'll see that the top bar text and text in general has
been reset to the default '1'. The setting is still set to '1.25', but visually
it's '1'.

If you set the value to something else, it gets applied correctly, until
you log out.

This worked as expected on package version 3.32.0-1. I wonder if this patch
listed in the CHANGELOG could have somehow created this side effect:
debian/patches/x11-Add-support-for-fractional-scaling-using-Randr.patch:
- X11: Add support for fractional scaling using Randr

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-06-07 Thread Pablo Sanabria
Well, this bug also is affecting me, I used the workaround in #10 and it works,
but I still need to put my password in order to unlock the "Login" Keyring (My
system don't have autologin enabled btw), the weird thing is that this system
is fresh installed (no more than a week) and It was working fine until today.
Maybe there is some package that I installed yesterday that is affecting the
system.
Google-chrome affected
Online accounts also is affected
I didn't test other apps, but as far I could check those apps were affected by
this issue
Greetings

[Bug 1514160] [NEW] contradictory geometry description

2015-11-08 Thread Pablo Piaggio
Public bug reported:

gnome-terminal's man pages describes option --geometry as:

--geometry=GEOMETRY
X geometry specification (see "X" man page), can be specified
once per window to be opened.

which is basically size in pixels and a position in the format
WIDTHx‐HEIGHT+XOFF+YOFF, e.g. 1280x720+0+0

However, gnome-terminal --help-all describes --geometry as:

--geometry=GEOMETRY Set the window size; for example:
80x24, or 80x24+200+200 (COLSxROWS+X+Y)

in other words, as columns by rows of text.

Currently gnome-terminal in an updated 14.04 works following the latter
definition, i.e., --geometry describes columns and rows of text.

Regards.

When i plug my Ipad i get the Trust this computer message and i do not
anything. The message continue on screen and i can normally access my files.

Thanks for the direction. Sadly, it hasn't wor)kded for me. I did as
you directed - ...modifying the software source line and change 'saucy'
to 'precise'... and so was able to get the package installed.
Unfortunately it appears not to have made a difference for me. :-(

 I have
 libimobiledevice-utils 1.1.5-0ubuntu2
 libimobiledevice4 1.1.5-0ubuntu2
as Pablo notes in his post #155

I have also done the mkdir and chgmod steps indicated above in post #148

I've done some more experimenting (after I've applied the package as
described above). Here's what I've found.

When I plug the phone in I get the Trust this computer message on the
phone right away and the dialog on my computer indicating The device
Michael's iPhone is locked If I click cancel I get a dialog which
says Unable to mount Michael's iPone. If, instead, I click the
trust button on the phone and quickly click the try again button on
the computer I get a dialog box which says Unhandled Lockdown error
 (-12). I have also seen Unhandled Lockdown Error (-256). I don't
know if this information provides any clues or not. I hope so.

One more bit of information, perhaps helpful, perhaps not - I've tried
this both with, and without a (simple) passcode on my phone.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

[Bug 1210910] [NEW] Mouse settings don't work in some sessions.

2013-08-10 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

In Raring, in some sessions, the mouse and touchpad settings are not
what they're supposed to be: too slow, scrolling doesn't work as well as
two-finger tapping to open context-menu and keyboard cancellation when
typing. Rebooting solves the problem, but it comes back sometimes. I
can't reproduce it, as it seems random, but I'm in one of those sessions
right now.

Note: I reported this bug against gnome-control-center, as it's the
closest I found to mouse settings. It's nice to notice that I cant' find
touchpad options in the menu when open the mouse configurations window,
if I'm in one of the sessions.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2013-04-01 Thread Pablo Castellano
My idea comes one day late as the deadline was yesterday :(

OpenITP is looking for projects to fund. Eligible projects must work on
improving users' ability to circumvent censorship and surveillance on
the Internet. So OTR support for Empathy fits perfectly!

http://openitp.org/?q=openitp_first_round_of_2013_project_funding_now_open_for_proposals

What do you think? Should we keep one eye on this kind of fundings and get
someone paid to do it?
I have no idea about who would be willing to do it but I'm sure you guys can
find one person in the community.

[Bug 1110809] [NEW] Online Accounts should try to reconnect Google Account when back online

2013-01-30 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

When Ubuntu starts, if a Google Account is set up in Online Accounts and
there's no working Internet connection yet, the Shutdown button goes red
and so does its Online Accounts entry, complaining that Ubuntu could not
connect to that account, and the user has to manually click the

[Bug 1033219] [NEW] Main Gimp window looses focus every time an option is used

2012-08-05 Thread Pablo Piaggio
Public bug reported:

In order to use the Gimp menu, the main window has to be selected.

However, after running almost any option from the menu, the focus does
not return the main window but changes aleatory to one of the other
windows (either Toolbox or Layers).

Those windows do not have menus, so you neither can use Alt+ to get to
the menus nor take advantage of the HUD.

I could say that this happens with any option that launch a dialog
window. For instance:

Color - Hue-Saturation
Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur
Etc.

This also happens when you switch to another workspace and come back.

I appreciate your time to review this bug.
Kind Regards.

So, is there any chance this is related to the bug I originally reported

Ubuntu One's Copy web link menu being gray, yet clickable and working.

Re: [Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken

2012-05-11 Thread Pablo Almeida
João

In the bug I'm talking about, you ARE able to copy the file, but the option
will look like it doesn't work, because it's gray instead of black.

I'm unable to reproduce it now and I can't reboot (it doesn't always
happen), but there's a clear way to do it, and that's how I originally
reported it:

1. Save a file to a Ubuntu One synchronized folder.
2. Wait for the file to upload and the green checkmark to appear.
3. Right click the file and click Publish.
4. Right click again and look for the Copy web link (or something like
that) menu item. The item will be gray, though it works.

2012/5/11 Joao Leonor 882...@bugs.launchpad.net

 Hi Pablo.

I did has you said and I'm still unable to reproduce the bug in 12.04
I even tried other steps, but I was always able to copy/paste the file.

 Cheers.

2012-05-07 Thread Pablo Almeida
Hi Joao. Sorry for taking too long (I wasn't home).

So, yes, I'm still able to reproduce it, but I noticed the steps
described here are incomplete. After doing what's written there, you
need to copy again the file (not its name) and try to paste it somewhere
else. The option works, but it's gray, as if not enabled, though it
works. This is the bug I originally had and they told me that it was a
duplicate of this one.

I've noticed that the bug occurs only if you close the power statistics window

[Bug 933550] Re: crashes after clicking on 'copy CD/DVD' again

2012-04-18 Thread Juan Pablo
Its seriously getting on my nerves. I've been copying a whole load of
old disks to my hard drive so i could get rid of them - they're taking
too much room.

It works for the first time, but it shuts down after clicking Copy
CD/DVD for the next CD, no messages shown as the bug description says.

Its very annoying, imagine restarting Brasero a million times, look for
the folder where the ISO should be changed AND change the image format.

On top of that, for some weird reason, Brasero changes the current
folder to my home folder when I choose a different format, which is very
annoying.

[Bug 975662] [NEW] Opening a new folder from Unity's Dash brings the window unfocused, kills keyboard-only navigation

2012-04-06 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

Note: I don't know if this is a bug in Nautilus or in Unity, but I'm
reporting it as a nautilus issue just to get the logs into the bug.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Have Firefox opened.
2. Open the dash (by taping Super) and search for a folder's name.
3. Navigate to it (if necessary) and type Enter (or Return).
4. Nautilus will open in that folder, but you can't do anything in it with the
keyboard and has to use the mouse.

What should happen instead:

4. Nautilus should open with focus, so you could search a file by typing
or navigate using the arrow keys.

Workaround:

You can Alt-tab to the new opened folder and then it gets the focus. But
this is annoying and kills the convenience of using the keyboard.

[Bug 956031] [NEW] Copy web link item from the Ubuntu One menu is gray even when active

2012-03-15 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

Note: I'm reporting this as a nautilus issue only so that apport will
collect some info that might be useful from my computer. This is
probably a Ubuntu One issue, but as I've seen a bug that looks exactly
like this before on nautilus (but with the Paste item), I'll leave it
like this. Also, this is not a problem with radiance theme or something
like this. It happens to Ambiance too.

The problem: When you click Publish in a Ubuntu One syncronized
folder's file and the item gets published, the copy web link item
doesn't look like it's activated, even though it is and can be clicked.
This is confusing and not obvious.

I'm attaching a screenshot. Notice that the option Stop publishing is
active (Parar a publicação in portuguese) but the Copy web link
option is gray (even thougth I can click it).

[Bug 902095] [NEW] Copying remaining time estimate is not accurate when doing multiple copies

2011-12-09 Thread Pablo Almeida
Public bug reported:

When you copy two files (or two set of files) from or to the same disk
separately, so that you have two copying progress bars and estimates and
one copying process is dealing with an amount of data larger than the
other, nautilus calculates the estimate as if both copying processes
were going to be running simultaneously until copying is complete, which
is not true. Once the smaller set of files finishes, the larger one will
get its full speed back and finish sooner than the first estimate
actually predicted.

My suggestion: Nautilus should be aware that the second file copy is
slowing the first one down, so it should calculate the first's estimate
as something like: estimate for the smaller set of files copy to
finish + estimate time to copy the amount of data that will be left
when the second process ends at both processes speed combined.

Although this approach may look too simplistic, I think it's better than
the rather pessimistic approach we're using right now.

In oneiric server with gdm and openbox added the bug occurs.
But it does work taking out autologin lines and leaving delayed login, i.e.

TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=oper
TimedLoginDelay=3

[Bug 888917] Re: Login time takes almost 1 minute on Oneiric

2011-11-29 Thread Pablo Almeida
Additional info: something that looks like my problem happened with a
friend's laptop after installing Jupiter. Even without activating it, it
seems like it changed something in ureadahead and then it became as slow
as mine. After uninstalling Jupiter, the problem went away. However, I
don't have Jupiter installed and this happens even in a new
installation. Purging ureadahead and reinstalling it didn't change a
thing either.
