[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-05-03 Thread Ralph Schmieder
funny enough, I have the opposite issue, 22.04 w/ gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu7
installed and Nvidia 510 driver. Hardware is a Dell XPS 15 9510 w/
GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU.

When selecting the Nvidia "On-Demand" profile, I get both, Wayland and
X11 in GDM. However, when I select "Performance Mode", X11 stops from
working, it's not offered in the gear menu anymore. What's worse, even
if I disable Wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, it seems like the X
server simply crashes:

May 03 10:49:44 delle systemd[1]: Started GNOME Display Manager.
May 03 10:49:44 delle gdm-launch-environment][7269]:

Is this a separate / known issue?

Thanks for the comments! BUT, it did not fix the problem.
I have tried that sequence several times and it makes no difference for me.

[Bug 225361] Re: .gvfs can't be stat'd by root causing backup tools to fail

2018-11-08 Thread Ralph Corderoy
It doesn't matter where you move the directory to, if it can't be
stat(2)'d then it's a POSIX violation and breaks programs. The example
of a user running rsync on their home directory doesn't mean that's the
only situation that should work.

It's vital to put thought into "naming things" before a poor decision
becomes permanent because it becomes public. At the very least, "-c"
suggests check and "-C" would often be the negative don't check, even if
no -c option exists because it's the default.

And then there's the issue Adrian raises.

[Bug 1085526]

2015-01-16 Thread Ralph-freedesktop
When was this bug's importance last considered? It was opened in 2008.
Digital signing and validation of PDFs, including using multiple
timestamps from Time Stamp Authorities, is now commonplace on Windows
given support in Acrobat, commercial PDF-producing libraries, etc. The
free desktop needs to catch up to be a part of that commercial world.
I'd suggest in the six years that this bug has been open the importance
has risen to high. Please might it be re-appraised?

If I remember correctly, those gestures actually come in as keyboard

[Bug 1237355] [NEW] Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse needs to be repaired

2013-10-09 Thread Ralph Meijer
Public bug reported:

Similar to #1094744, the Logitech Ultra Touch Mouse fails to reconnect
after powering off or switching channels (this mouse can be associated
with two devices). Adding a line to the PIN code database (/usr/share
/gnome-bluetooth/pin-code-database.xml, see attachment) and then
removing and re-adding the device resolves the problem for me.

For completeness, the specific device model is t630 (for Windows), for
which all other functionality (including all gestures and battery
information) seems to be working quite well. Some gestures result in key
combinations that have no default action bound to them. There is also a
Mac version called t631. I am uncertain if the latter has the same
pairing issue.

Ubuntu 13.04, gnome-bluetooth 3.6.1-0ubuntu3.1.

Launcpad generally needs some attention- I was getting segmentation

I understand why more a more flexible lookup system like MusicBrainz is
needed, but not at the expense of perceived stability. A more detailed
error message, with options to retry the lookup if a 404 error is
returned, should be provided

[Bug 877429] [NEW] Manual resize of window required after Best Fit

2011-10-18 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Public bug reported:

Maximise evince with an A4 PDF, hit Best Fit, page fills vertical space,
much horizontal space empty. I now have to manually resize the evince
window to be narrower until the waste is tolerable. It would be nice if
evince itself let me ask it to minimise its window for the current size
selected, e.g. 50%. It would do a better job than my manual resize and
be quicker.

[Bug 712630] Re: Ubuntu Alternate: Empty desktop after installation with 2D fallback

2011-02-07 Thread Ralph Green
I chose Close, instead of Change session, since I could not see what
Change session would mean. I got the same results, anyway. As an
experiment, I tried switching to a virtual console and enabling an
nVidia proprietary driver. I hoped that a reboot would then let me run
Unity or something. After the reboot, I never see anything but a blank
screen and cannot bring up virtual consoles again.

I got these results on a system with a Matrox G400 video card and on
one with a nVidia Ti4200.

[Bug 216144] Re: gnome-display-properties should allow the primary screen to be chosen

2011-01-28 Thread Ralph Meijer
Even thought the gnome bug has been closed as fixed in Gnome 3, the
solution of having to drag the menu bar to another monitor seems
suboptimal to me.

Whenever I hook up an external monitor to my laptop, and have to
explicitly enable it (because I disabled it before) in the Monitor
Preferences, I really want to make it the primary monitor in that same
dialog. A checkbox, as proposed elsewhere, that does the same thing as
xrandr --output VGA1 --primary, along with some kind of marking in the
monitor arrangement panel.

[Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs

2011-01-02 Thread Ralph Corderoy
rsync isn't trying to include .gvfs even with the -x option. It along
with find(1), etc., has to be able to do some things with .gvfs to even
work out it is the mount point of another filesystem and shouldn't be
descended into further. Those things fail in a way that they never
should with Unix semantics for root. You're just seeing other symptoms
of the same underlying problem; FUSE's configuration not allowing root
to do anything, as it normally can. But this bug report isn't the place
for discussion, I suspect. I just wanted to clarify that there isn't a
further bug.

[Bug 611508] Re: nautilus 2.28.1 - fail to launch (core dump) after rhythmbox failure

2010-07-29 Thread Ralph Hyre
** Description changed:

- I use a system with multiple removable drives DVD-writers.
+ I use a system with multiple removable drives DVD-writers. There is a
+ scenario where if you are running rhythmbox, with audio CDs in both DVD
+ drives, and rhythmbox crashes, then something is left in a bad state,
+ causing nautilus to not start up successfully.

After rhythmbox fails, any attempts to open a new nautilus file manager
fail with a segmentation violation. It seems that the problems are
connected, although I'm not sure how.

- The workaround is to restart Linux (9.10-karmic), which isn't helpful.
- The failure to launch happens whether you use the GUI or the command
- line (/usr/bin/nautilus)
+ One workaround is to manually eject the disks from the drives by running
+ System - Disk Utility and ejecting each disk. This seems to work, but
+ the problem repeats itself when you insert a new disk in the drives.
+
+ The DVD Drives are:
+ 1) PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-218L
+ 2) TSSTcorp VDDVDW SH-S223B
+
+ A second workaround is to restart Linux (9.10-karmic), which isn't the
+ desired workaround. The failure to launch happens whether you use the
+ GUI or the command line (/usr/bin/nautilus)

Despite getting a core dump, running gdb on the executable after the
- core file doesn't show a stack trace.
+ core file doesn't show a stack trace. See the 5th item attached to the
+ report for the minimal information provided by GDB.

[Bug 498425] Re: Rhythmbox Musicplayer won't extract tracks from CD to library

2010-07-21 Thread Ralph
I believe I'm hitting the same bug, except in karmic (9.10)

The dialog comes up and asks me if I want to replace the existing file:
foo.flac. If I answer Y, it does so and proceeds to the next file.
If at any of the tracks, I answer N, I get an error message for every
remaining track to be extracted. I have two DVD drives on the system, it
doesn't matter which one the disk is in that I refuse to re-extract.

Unable to locate encoding profile for mime-type

I'd appreciate re-opening the case, the problem is very easy to
reproduce.

Re: [Bug 18572] Re: modem_applet: waitpid()'s return value causes wedging.

2010-06-08 Thread Ralph Corderoy

I've obtained gnome-applets_2.30.0.orig.tar.gz and
gnome-applets_2.30.0-0ubuntu2.diff which I think are 10.04's. The
original code is as above when I opened the bug although the line
numbers are slightly different. The diff doesn't change them in any
way. 12_modem_applet_waitpid_fix.patch still applies OK with an offset
of -15 lines.

So the problem remains in the code. My concern over the patch remains,
detailed in #3 above. waitpid() is clearly being wrongly used. That
can be fixed without further test results. Then the underlying problem
may come to light once the code processes waitpid's response properly.

[Bug 567606] [NEW] Power option switch from .. gives black screen

2010-04-20 Thread Peter Ralph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have three users. If I login, play cards, AisleRiot Solitaire, for
two or three games and then click the power icon, top RH corner, and
click on one of the other usernames then the current session closes
and a new session starts for the new user.If I go through the
procedure again then that user session closes and a new session starts
for the new user, can be user 1 or 3.

However, if I start, * switch to another user * and then try to Switch
from xyz the current session closes, the login screen is displayed
and I am invited to login. If I then click on the original user and
input the password the screen goes black, a white arrow appears and it
sits there for up to three hours. The white arrow follows mouse
movements. I have to use the computer restart button to restart.

* means play cards as in opening paragraph.

This is repeatable and happened to me on Mon 19th April and Tue 20th
April.

daemon.

This was fixed in Debian bug #494370 and fixed in gnome-settings-daemon

[Bug 487764] [NEW] Underscore in filenames cause infinite delays in listing icons/files in a file browser window

2009-11-24 Thread Ralph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I had previously reported problems with file manager (Nautilus 2.28.1),
in Ubuntu Karmic 9.10.

Files that are viewable in the command line 'ls' command, using the bash shell,
are not viewable in Natilus,
and also have the bad behavior of causing the 'spinning cursor' to come on and
stay indefinitely ( 5 minutes).

The problem seems to be triggered by filenames with underscore
characters inside.

To reproduce:
Open Natilus via Places-Home Folder

The file Proj is a symlink to ~/Documents/Projects, also listed as a
shortcut

ral...@sagan:~/Proj/Origami$ mv space_shuttle2.pdf SpaceShuttle.pdf
[files now viewable in Nautilus)

ral...@sagan:~/Proj/Origami$ mv SpaceShuttle.pdf space_shuttle2.pdf

No files in the ~/Proj/Origami are viewable in Nautilus, and the spinning
cursor comes on a stays on.
Once I rename the files back to the form with no underscore, there is no
problem.

[Bug 482394] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 - filebrowser busy cursor stays on in certain directories

2009-11-13 Thread Ralph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have a comparatively long directory name, and an exceptionally long
filename.

1) I'm using ubuntu 9.10
2) Nautilus 2.28.1 (package version 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu1) seems to go nuts when it
encounters the long filenames with lots of embedded spaces.

3) I expect to get a full list of Icons showing filenames.

4) What I get instead, is a partial list of the files with shorter names, and a
spinning 'busy cursor' that never goes away.
This happens whether I am in List View, Compact View, or Icon View. If I do a
stop/reload, nothing at all is displayed.

5) Workarounds:
I can pop into a shell, and list the files, and the text of the filename
renders properly.

When I rename a file in the shell window, Nautilus seems to pick it up, but it
still keeps the busy cursor on, and refuses
to display the other files. , but I shouldn't have to rename files
just so Nautilus will work.

Long directory example: ~/Pictures/Advertisements/Next50YearsHolland$

Long filename: Screenshot-Amazon.com\:\ The\ Next\ Fifty\ Years\:\
Science\ in\ the\ First\ Half\ of\ the\ Twenty-first\ Century\
\(9780375713422\)\:\ John\ Brockman\ TOC\ 1\ -\ Mozilla\ Firefox.png

I rename the long filename to TOC1.png, and Nautilus displays it
properly.

The reason I'm filing the bug is that Nautilus shouldn't hang when it
encounters a challenging (long) filename.

On 2009-10-12T21:24:50-, Gannin digitalto...@gmail.com wrote:
Are you kidding? Ubuntu developers and I suppose Linux developers in
general apparently don't really care about these little bugs that turn
out to be huge usability stumbling blocks, just like they'd rather stick
to a cumbersome form of software management that really only works well
if you follow the exact guidelines set out for you rather than wanting
to doing something like, oh, I don't know, updating to the latest
version of a program before the next distribution is released.

Nobody is stopping you from updating to the latest version of a program
before the next distribution is released. You can always build from the
source on your own. You can also run the latest distribution before it
is released. But it's not always a simple crap to do that, because
there can be a bunch of dependency changes, which might affect other
parts of the system. This is why we have releases, where everything is
hopefully in a somewhat stable state.

Try running Gentoo if you want to be able to upgrade to the latest
packages with little regard to how it affects the rest of the system.
It's a lot of work to get everything working together. This is the work
that the Ubuntu developers are doing.

Face it, Windows and Mac may be broken in a variety of ways, but simple
crap like this that prevents people from getting their work done, or
makes them have to work harder to get their work done, would just never
 fly.

If you are better served by Windows or Mac, then why are you messing
around with Ubuntu? Just use what's best for you.

using a Screenlet terminal, so this does not work for me. I suspect
that my Screenlet terminal is hard coded to autodetect the backspace
key, with no options I have found to change it.

That is not for xterm. That sounds like it is for xfce4-terminal. xterm
is a different package and seems to be unrelated to this bug.

[Bug 305030] Re: Failed to print document - can't prompt for authorization

2009-03-19 Thread Ralph
I have a similar problem with IPP printing that requires authentication,
and I think it's the same bug (or related at least).

I set up the printer (IPP) and the first time I printed I was prompted for a
password, but it worked.
After this, however, I got the authentication error described above.

After som digging, I have it kind of working by doing this:
1. Changing the URI in /etc/cups/printers.conf from
DeviceURI ipp://ipp-printer-server-adress:631/printers/printer1
to
DeviceURI ipp://USER:PASSWORD@ipp-printer-server-adress:631/printers/printer1
2. Removed myself from the lpadmin group.

Now I can print using lpr or Acroreader (which uses lp/lpr), but I still
can't print from Evince!

Adding the USER:PASSWORD in system-config-printer does not work, but manually
editing /etc/cups/printers.conf did.
As a first try, I commented out the AuthInfoRequired line, but it crept back
in when I restarted Cups!

Another thing which may or may not be related is that I can't change the
printer settings for this printer that require authentication. [And yes, I
tried it while still begin in the lpadmin group...]
If I use the Cups web interface, it works however. But it's not very
convenient...

[Bug 225361] Re: ~/.gvfs causes various errors

So, are we instead to raise a bug on every program and script that
doesn't expect a brain-damaged response due to ~/.gvfs? And then expect
the maintainers of those programs to work around the brain damage? E.g.
`alsa force-reload' causes `lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-

[Bug 328167] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon eating 100% CPU at login in Jaunty

2009-03-03 Thread Ralph Giles
I have a very similar problem on x86_64, gnome-keyring 2.25.92-0ubuntu1.
Sometimes when I log in gnome-keyring-daemon is hung using 100% cpu.
Sometimes it works for a while, then hangs when asked for a key by an
ssh invocation. I've only had the problem since upgrading to jaunty last
week.

Attaching with gdb I got the following backtrace:

(gdb) bt
#0 0x7fed5df57496 in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x0046ebd0 in ?? ()
#2 0x7fed5e44670f in ?? () from /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0
#3 0x7fed5e446d3d in g_main_loop_run () from /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0
#4 0x0040e4e7 in ?? ()
#5 0x7fed5de995a6 in __libc_start_main () from /lib/libc.so.6

#8 0x001c in ?? ()
#9 0x0003 in ?? ()
#10 0x7fff67a5af2e in ?? ()
#11 0x in ?? ()

Is there a work-around for this? My development environment is
effectively unusable without an ssh key-agent, and since restarting a
global agent requires logging out, I consider this a very serious issue.

[Bug 333768] Re: wlan network configuration error

2009-02-26 Thread Ralph Janke
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in gnome-nettool.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be
accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application
with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at

Why is this bug closed? Disabling polling should seem to do just that,
stop the frequent polling. I don't see why it should stop things
working when the user initiates the action; surely a one-off poll
should be done then. And the WARNING **: Error getting media type

I understand this configuration of FUSE has been chosen because of
security concerns, as opposed to using its allow_users or allow_root
  options.

This is not a valid concern. In Ubuntu, allow_root is by default
 enabled in /etc/fuse.conf.

In my untouched 8.04 /etc/fuse.conf, both mount_max and user_allow_other
are commented out, meaning the file has no active options.

So even if gvfs does not use --allow-root, a malicious user can simply
mount a filesystem of his choice manually and with --allow-root.

It's my understanding that Ubuntu have set up automounting of user
filesystems (non-FUSE ones) so a malicious user can have root mount
their concocted filesystem anyway, so I'm not sure what the current
troublesome, non-Unix, FUSE configuration is protecting us from?

you're right about the survival from an older release.

Re: [Bug 225361] Re: ~/.gvfs causes various errors

2008-11-15 Thread Ralph Corderoy

Phillip Susi wrote:
That is really just a contributing factor, not the problem. The
problem is that people are having utilities fail when they run into
.gvfs because root can't access it ( and this is by design, not a bug
 ).

It is a bug in that, under Unix, by design, that should *never* happen
to a process running as root.

The utilities in question shouldn't be messing with .gvfs in the first
place, so a simple solution is to move it somewhere they aren't going
 to run into it.

Sorry, that's not possible. As root, it's entirely valid, and not
uncommon, for me to run `find / ...' which will descend and find .gvfs
wherever to decide to move it to.

Nikolaus Rath and S B, take a look at my earlier comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/225361/comments/11 I
understand this configuration of FUSE has been chosen because of
security concerns, as opposed to using its allow_users or allow_root
options. However, I'm not sure those concerns remain valid given Ubuntu
automatically mounts the filesystems on a USB flash drive I insert, and
I doubt every piece of filesystem code in the kernel is robust against
maliciously concocted corrupt filesystems.

[Bug 225361] Re: ~/.gvfs causes various errors

2008-11-13 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Just to be clear, mounting .gvfs somewhere other than $HOME doesn't
solve the problem this bug's covering IMO, which is that the filesystem
breaks the Unix norm that root can stat anything.

[Bug 284691] Re: Gnome System Monitor garbled display on Parallels

2008-11-10 Thread Ralph Little
I have had no feedback unfortunately.
I would have thought that it was standard practice to record the bug that this
is supposed to be a duplicate of, otherwise we're no wiser. :(
I have checked over the currently pending bugs and I see nothing similar.
Either Pedro is mistaken or the related bug is in another component entirely
such as x.org

[Bug 98637] Re: window list → bug in flash ing effect

2008-10-30 Thread Ralph Corderoy
The issue I raised in bug #260459, which was marked as a duplicate of
this one, was seen in 8.04, yes. In that bug report, it says Ubuntu
8.04, gnome-panel 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu1.1.. But perhaps it's a different
issue and not a duplicate after all?

[Bug 289312] Re: Evince crashed for unknown reason

2008-10-26 Thread Ralph Janke
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 284691] [NEW] Gnome System Monitor garbled display on Parallels

2008-10-16 Thread Ralph Little
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

When run in Parallels, upgraded from Hardy, Gnome System Monitor draws
incorrectly.
Positioning information seems skewed.
Screen shot enclosed.

There is a shadow window, and the main display area seems to be shrunk
vertically.
Mouse positions for buttons follow the shadow size.

Running in Parallels on MacOS Leopard.

All other apps seem to be fine.

gnome-system-monitor 2.24.0-0ubuntu1

Re: [Bug 225361] Re: Superuser cannot access ~/.gvfs folder when mounted

2008-10-12 Thread Ralph Corderoy

In my opinion, this doesn't reall give enough information to confirm
that the behaviour isn't down to user error. For example, on the second
machine the cut-and-pasted output of

for u in A B C; do ls -ld /home/$u{,/.gvfs}; df /home/$u/.gvfs; id
$u; done

would be useful.

[Bug 231051] Re: yelp crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-10-10 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Ubuntu 8.04, yelp 2.22.1-0ubuntu2.8.04.3.

On doing `gnome-help info:groff' the window appears correctly. Clicking
Introduction gives a SIGSEGV in strlen(). It's very consistent
behaviour. Attached is valgrind log.
