I have further studied the gnome-screensaver code, and have come to the
conclusion that the SimulateUserActivity functionality (this is what vlc
and 'gnome-screensaver-command --poke' actually call inside g-s-s) is
left simply broken.
As shown in comment #15, SimulateUserActivity asks the unlock
to either logout and re-login or restart your computer.
The patch is reported to work in debian, though.

I did 4 ubuntu fresh installs the last week (just playing around with
different desktop managers).
Right now this moment I am coming over this bug on a fresh install of
LinuxMint7 = Ubuntu Jaunty.
I am having it on a USB-disk install of
fixed it chmod 644 .dmrc and chmod o-w
/home/reinhard, which fixed the problem.
And it recurred after I fixed it and after the error message was absent
for a while.

even the ffmpeg version shipped in jaunty does support some variants of
AVCHD, AFAIU the upstream bugtracker. Possibly for some specific
camcorders some bugfixes need to be backported. Please file propoer
bugreports with samples, so that we can test and reproduce the problem.
