[Bug 1881294] Re: Apparmor blocks evince GUI-Input-Dialogs

2020-06-01 Thread Reinhard
Hello Arnold,

thanks a lot for your fast and good answer!

But maybe I do something terribly wrong or there is something working
strange?

To deploy apparmor changes I started to play around on a test machine
with no LDAP and no NFS.

1. created new user: /home/teachers/check
2. added @{HOMEDIRS}+=/home/teachers/ to
/etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/site.local
3. sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince
4. sudo service apparmor reload
5. reboot

but still have the same behavior as described above :-(

And this is the error-message I get now:

Jun 1 11:15:29 r000pc01 kernel: [ 21.460130] audit: type=1400

[Bug 1881294] [NEW] Apparmor blocks evince GUI-Input-Dialogs

Public bug reported:

Network Users (LDAP + NFS4 home) cannot interact with evince GUI-input-
elements.

* page navigation per number not possible
* select pages to print not possible
* save open PDF with different name not possible

Local user on the same machine behaves as expected.

[Bug 1866565] Re: Enabling the embedded terminal plugin crashes GEdit and subsequently prevents GEdit to start b/c of missing key in GSettings schema

2020-03-11 Thread Reinhard
Work around to start gedit again, if broken from missing schema key:

install dconf (ow-level configuration system):
>> sudo apt update
>> sudo apt install dconf

start dconf:
>> dconf

Navigate to key:
org.gnome.gedit.plugins.active-plugins

and activate the default values:
['filebrowser', 'spell', 'modelines', 'time', 'docinfo']

or eliminate terminal in your actual values:

=> gedit will start again.

PS:
I miss old style config files :-(

[Bug 1015913] [NEW] Printer settings are forgotten after printing

2012-06-21 Thread Reinhard Mayr
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04, shotwell 0.12.3, all packages up-to-date.

Select a photo and print it: File / Print ...
 * Paper type is Automatic (would need Photo paper)
 * paper source is Auto (would need Photo tray)
 * paper size is A4 (would need 4x6 borderless photo)
 * image quality is normal (would need hires photo)

These settings are reset after each printing run. For the next job I
have to reapply these settings manually.

Is there a way to make the settings persistent?

Thanks!

[Bug 712103] Re: unlocking dialog doesn't show

2012-03-25 Thread Reinhard Tartler
I experience this in precise, but only when running a unity session, and
also not really reliably on two (sandy-bridge) systems.

One system is a desktop PC running a radeon 6670 graphics card. There, I
experienced this each time when resuming after suspending the machine
reliably. Switching from unity to gnome3 seems to help.

The other system is a laptop that was recently upgraded to precise. I
have added a session item that locks the screen when logging in (because
the system is configured to auto-login). Here, the described symptom
happens already at login time.

Re: [Bug 778205] Re: emacs daemon inhibits logout

Isn't there some dbus signal emitted when the users request
logout/shutdown/reboot? In that case, you could probably write some
elisp code that reacts to that signal and terminates the daemon
automatically.

Re: [Bug 715480] missing an imap account

2011-06-03 Thread Reinhard Bring
Today, I have updated all machines to Natty. Before I changed the config
of the mail accounts from imap to imapx. Since then, the error has not
appeared again. However, today I do not have the problem, but I am not
willing to test the natty config with the formerly used imap instead of
imapx. I'd really like to know the difference between imap and imapx
since other email clients don't seem to make such differences.
Best regards Reinhard

[Bug 720389] Re: The touchpad works very bad

2011-05-08 Thread Reinhard
Hallo Airam,

Thanks for your help in my https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/762768.

I sympathize with your feeling I'm feeling a bit alone here

May be we are spread over to many bugs?

I still hope that the 8 month old SuSE fixes will find a way into the
normal distribution.

For the moment I will use the normal package with 2 changes in my
parameters:

AreaBottomEdge=4331 (instead =0)
Important: to make text-selection possible

TopEdge = 0 (instead=1627)
just improves usability: cursor moves, even if the finger is at the top of
cklickpad.

It looks like, if there is no major strategy for that Clickpad - stuff,
which gets quit complex with all these features and options.

greetings
reinhard

What happens instead?
At the next start I am missing one of them in the folders on the left side.
The missing account is still available in the configuration
(edit/preferences/account).
There is no error message.
You can view evolution connecting to the missing account to get new mails, etc.
But there is no display of this account.
When deactivating the missing account in edit/preferences/account (not delete),
then saving and afterwards reactivating it again including saving the config it
can happen to appear the missing account. But this bahaviour is inpredictable.
I can reproduce this behaviour since about one year. So it already happened
with earlier versions.
Also I see this failure on different machines (notebook, 2 PC's).
The IMAP accounts are from web.de and another from an own web/mailserver
running ubuntu 8.04 with postfix and dovecot as imap component.

 Upstream's release notes also indicate:

 - nonfree libamr support for AMR-NB/WB decoding/encoding removed
 - RTP depacketization of AMR

also mentioned:

- AMR-NB decoder

Also checkout the file libavcodec/amrnbdec.c in the sources.

AMR-WB is still missing, though.

should make epiphany able to access the net over the proxy.

this does work in firefox properly and did work in earlier versions of

On the upstream ffmpeg bug, cehoyos has recommended to use ffmpeg SVN
with the options explained in the documentation. You can pull the source
 code by running:

 svn checkout svn://svn.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg

this will break all applications that have been built against ubuntu's
system ffmpeg that is currently at version 0.5. Please don't do that on
production systems.

Can anyone confirm that ffmpeg from SVN with the options below
 actually plays AMR properly?

It will probably do. and I could just add the build dependency and built
the system ffmpeg against opencore-amr.

However for license reasons, this would render the resulting ffmpeg
libraries to be licensed as GPLv3. Have you considered and listed how
many packages in the archive would have to be removed because of that?

I had not considered the legal issues with this request, simply the
technical side (curiosity - to see it work). I still don't quite
understand why packages would have to be removed because of that (but
then again I am not a lawyer). Is there any way to make opencore-amr
modular, so it can be added after the fact without compiling ffmpeg?

I don't understand what you mean here.

The problem is that GPLv2 only applications may not be redistributed
with an GPLv3 only library. ffmpeg is currently GPLv2 or later, linking
it with opencore-amr would make it GPLv3 only.

Meanwhile on the GNOME upstream bug I have gotten the following response:
 Sebastian Dröge 2009-12-31 10:19:05 UTC
Yes, you need at least 0.10.13 of gst-plugins-ugly.

Is -ugly 0.10.13 available in a PPA for testing? Cheers!

gstreamer is a bit special, because it loads amr at run-time. This way,
the license violation happens on the user's system, and not on the
ubuntu build machines. Loading opencore-amr at runtime is (currently)
not possible with current ffmpeg, though feel free to send in a patch.

still very messy, IMO.

if modules/misc/inhibit.c was converted to the the inhibit API of gnome-

Chris Coulson chrisccoul...@googlemail.com writes:

Please don't use the org.gnome.ScreenSaver interface, as it has other
issues (such as leaking inhibitors if a process exits without removing

gnome-screensaver --poke does use exactly this interface. The earlier
mentioned dbus call does therefore exactly the same as using the Inhibit
command, which is now suddenly deprecated without real communication
with downstreams.

It would be really great if an SRU could make the org.gnome.ScreenSaver
interface again. A patch was proposed for this, but you defacto vetoed
it because it supposely would make gnome-screensaver crash if the XSS
extension is not available, correct? Did you have a chance to improve
the patch so that we can include it in an SRU?

Use the org.gnome.SessionManager interface instead, and gnome-
session will clean up inhibitors if the registering application exits
without removing them (ie, if it crashes. This is currently an issue
with Totem, which uses the problematic interface)

Is there an portable interface that preferably works in both Gnome and
KDE?

[Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver --poke functionality does no longer inhibit screen blanking

2009-10-20 Thread Reinhard Tartler
I have further studied the gnome-screensaver code, and have come to the
conclusion that the SimulateUserActivity functionality (this is what vlc
and 'gnome-screensaver-command --poke' actually call inside g-s-s) is
left simply broken.

As shown in comment #15, SimulateUserActivity asks the unlock screen to
appear, but will (no longer) prevent the screen to be locked. This makes
this functionality absolutely unusable for any media player application.

Xtophe points out that g-s-s is supposed to proxy requests to gnome-
session. This is right, but only when using the Inhibit API.

Patching vlc to use Inhibit instead of SimulateUserActivity would be an
option. However, the API is different. While SimulateUserActivity does
not require any parameters, Inhibit requires three: the application
name, the reason for inhibiting and a random (but unique) cookie.
Currently, vlc/modules/misc/screensaver.c does support dbus calls
without parameters only. And since here the low level dbus API is used,
adding this is hard for me. DBUS gurus welcome. Perhaps it would be
easier if that file was ported to glib so that the glib dbus bindings
could be used. YMMV.

For similar reasons gnome-screensaver is uneasy to fix. It would have to
somehow identify what application has poked the screensaver, invent some
reason for inhibiting the saver and decide on a duration how long the
supression should last.

IMO improving g-s-s to proxy the SimulateUserActivity call to the
inhibit API would make it most compatible with existing applications. At
least this change should be properly communicated to upstreams who now
wonder why poking the screensaver suddenly fails.

[Bug 452929] Re: lyrics download fails

2009-10-16 Thread Reinhard Tartler
it seems that we already have that change in the karmic package, but my
gconf database still had a reference to lyricwiki.org. So this bug is
already fixed for new installs, but broken for upgrades

the correct solution would be to make rhythmbox cope with the new
lyricwiki API or at least remove it from the gconf settings.

[Bug 428884] Re: Vlc does not inhibit screensaver

2009-10-14 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Xtophe (from vlc upstream) suggested that debian bug #541968 and gnome
bug #579430 may be relevant. I've checked the proposed patch to gnome-
screensaver, and it indeed seems that vlc is using a function in gnome-
screensaver that has been replaced by a stub (well, rather a FIXME).

If gnome-screensaver is detected, VLC sends the Poke and
SImulateUserActivity signals in modules/misc/screensaver.c, function
poke_screensaver. Poke does not seem implemented at all, and
SimulateUserActivity leads to this function:

static void

gs_monitor_simulate_user_activity (GSMonitor *monitor)

{

/* FIXME: reset the xsync timer? */

/* request that the manager unlock -

will pop up a dialog if necessary */

gs_manager_request_unlock (monitor-priv-manager);

}

I agree with xtophe that the proposed patch from the gnome bug could
help here. Would someone please try that patch out?

Re: [Bug 327872] Re: Missing support for AVCHD (MTS/M2TS)

2009-08-06 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Geekkit arron.fergu...@gmail.com writes:

I'm confused as to the status of this bug report. Here are the steps
 AFAIU them:

 1) When I filed this bug with details of what the problem was and how to
circumvent it, it was originally filed against Nautilus.

Which is clearly wrong, as nautilus does not decode any media files.

 2) Then the bug got reassigned to gstreamer where its state went from
 new to confirmed

which is more correct, because nautilus is using the gstreamer framework
for media files.

 3) Then (still in gstreamer) new to unknown

 4) Then (still in gstreamer) unknown to new

upstream tasks are generally tracked upstream.

 5) Suggestion of FFMPEG supporting these files

gstreamer does TTBOMK have no AVCHD decoder, but uses ffmpeg for this.

 6) ffmpeg changed from new to fix released

Does this mean Ubuntu developers are now considering this bug now fixed?

I with my ffmpeg package maintainer in debianubuntu hat on, changed the
ffmpeg upstream bug-task's status, with the rationale given in comment
#6. As the ffmpeg developers do not follow nor even notice bugs
launchpad, and additionally have clear instructions for reporting such
bugs (which are clearly not followed here), I don't see what we as
ubuntu developers can do about this bug other than asking the submitters
to follow the ffmpeg upstream's bug submission guidelines
(i.e. submitting a proper example file).

2009-08-05 Thread Reinhard Tartler
my understanding of this issue is that ffmpeg in general does support
AVCHD files, but there might very well be some producers that produce
files that ffmpeg does not understand. If you find such a file, I'd
suggest to follow the bug submission guidelines at

[Bug 209464] Re: When I login, I receive and error that the permissions are wrong for the file .dmrc

2009-07-24 Thread Reinhard
I do not know what I did, but it seems like bad juju ...

I did 4 ubuntu fresh installs the last week (just playing around with
different desktop managers).

Right now this moment I am coming over this bug on a fresh install of
LinuxMint7 = Ubuntu Jaunty.

I am having it on a USB-disk install of Jaunty.

I had it on Xubuntu Jaunty before I did the Mint fresh install today
(that was one of the reasons for my fresh install).

I fixed the permissions as the error message suggested. Some xorg
restarts later it complains again???

[Bug 209464] Re: When I login, I receive and error that the permissions are wrong for the file .dmrc

2009-07-24 Thread Reinhard
The post before was a bit unclear , sorry:
1. Linux Mint 7 fresh on sda5
2. Ubuntu Jaunty (Gnome) on sdb1 (USB)
3. Xubuntu Jaunty (Xfce4) on sdb5
4. Ubuntu commandline with Fluxbox on sdb1 (USB) - I first encountered it here..

With all of them I got .dmrc beeing ignored

With all of them I fixed it chmod 644 .dmrc and chmod o-w
/home/reinhard, which fixed the problem.

And it recurred after I fixed it and after the error message was absent
for a while.

2009-07-16 Thread Reinhard Tartler
mayank mayank_christ...@hotmail.com writes:

funny thing is, that even the VLC play does not show display. it works,
and gives audio- but no picture!!

 GS streamer simply crashes.

so I found a way out- I start the VLC player- and put it in pause mode.

probable explanation: This causes vlc to allocate an xv port, which is
then unavailable to GS

then start the GS streamer, and the GS streamer works !! with picture,
and audio both with most formats (mp4, flv etc)

GS fails then to open an xv port, and falls back to X11 video.

therefore it means that the VLC player is loading something, which then
is utilized by the GStreamer player?

no, I rather assumes it blocks access to something. you can try if
starting vlc with 'vlc -V x11' to check if I'm right.

This should also be configurable in totem somewhere, but I don't know
how the video output module can be selected.

If I am right, this is most certainly a problem in your videodriver.

even the ffmpeg version shipped in jaunty does support some variants of

Then a patch against the ubuntu package can be created.

[Bug 282988] Re: totem-gstreamer crashes when Compiz-fusion is activated (fglrx)

2009-04-03 Thread Reinhard Tartler
You have reported a crash that actually happened in the libavcodec or
libavformat library. In order to be able to actually fix this bug, we
must be able to:

1. Reproduce it;
2. Check if it happens with the latest version; and
3. Understand where it actually crashes.

You can help with the first point by attaching an example file to this
bug report. Please note that a proper attachment is preferred over a
link to some remote site. Remote sites that are password protected or
otherwise restricted (services like rapidshare.com) are absolutely not
acceptable. If your file is too large, try to reproduce with the first
few MB only. See http://ffmpeg.org/bugreports.html section Submitting
Sample Media for guidelines.
