This bug affects me too, on 14.04 (kernel 3.13.0-46).
However, the curious thing is that it only affects me with the new
Transcend StoreJet 25H3 external HDD (USB 3.0) that I got recently.
Before that I was using a Seagate external HDD (also USB 3.0) which I
was able to safely remove (either using

I realized that the problem is that gtk-chtheme has to be sychronized
with gnome-appearance-properties . Without that, the results seem to be
undefined.
This is way too complex.

This is still a problem for me with gnome-screensaver 2.30.0-0ubuntu2.
I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513, which various websites say is an Intel
GMA video card.
My workaround is to essentially disable gnomesaver by "sudo mv /usr/bin
/gnome-screensaver /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver.bak".

The battery icon only seems to show if I do

That is, if gnome-power-manager is run as root, the battery icon in the
notification area in the taskbar shows. If I run as a normal user, it
doesn't.

My Acer Aspire 5740-5513 laptop does not dim when AC power is removed
and is relying on battery only. I don't know if this is specifically a
gnome-power-manager problem or something to do with the acpi subsystem
in general.

The 2.29.2-0ubuntu9 version of gnome-power-manager seems to work
slightly better. The icon doesn't appear as a filling/emptying battery,
but the pull-down menu seems to work again.

My icon never appears -- it looks just like a "terminal icon" and there
is no pulldown menu.
(My volume control icon has a similar problem in that it also has the
"terminal icon".)
If I run gnome-power-manager as root, the icon appears, but the pulldown
still does not work. And the icon eventual
Kill'ing -9 (SIGKILL) gnome-keyring-daemon also breaks out of the gnome-
screensaver.
