[Bug 386929] Re: Evolution Contacts crash on PDA sync when using WebDAV source

2009-07-13 Thread Sebastian Breier
I get some weird behavior.

1) I use gpilotd with WebDAV contacts in a normal fashion - it crashes
constantly

2) I use gpilotd with apport started - it doesn't crash

3) I use gpiloted after stopping apport - it doesn't crash

4) I reboot, I use gpilotd a few times - after some time it starts
crashing constantly again

5) repeat with (2)

So, I have no crash dump file. I will keep apport enabled for now and
see if this fixes my problem. Then maybe we can find the actual cause.

Unfortunately, apport does not generate a crash report from the module crash.

[Bug 386929] [NEW] Evolution Contacts crash on PDA sync when using WebDAV source

2009-06-14 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Today I copied all my Evolution contacts to a WebDAV source to keep them
synchronized between machines.
I use PDA sync for my contacts and changed the EAdress conduit to use the new
contacts source.

When synchronizing contacts with the PDA, the Contacts part of Evolution
crashes (see error messages).
It only comes back by doing evolution --force-shutdown and re-starting it.

This happens repeatedly, and after switching back to local Contacts,
synchronization works flawless again.

The debug output and error messages are probably not very helpful; Could
somebody please direct me to a more appropriate way of debugging these
part crashes, where Evolution stays alive?

[Bug 156201] Re: System unresponsive when opening huge files in gedit

2009-03-31 Thread Sebastian Breier
I just tried the same in 9.04 Beta, and gedit crashed without a warning.
Starting gedit from the console, I get an allocation error.

** Summary changed:

- System unresponsive when opening huge files in gedit
+ gedit handles opening big files badly

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gedit

- I just opened a 400 MB text file (mbox mail file) in gedit, and it my
- system has now been unresponsive for minutes. Other editors can open
- large files without a problem. Also, there's no progress bar or cancel
- button that would make it easy to see how long gedit is loading the file
- or to cancel the load.
+ Opening big text files (400 MB, 750 MB) in gedit is bad
+ - from a usability standpoint
+ - There's no progress bar or cancel button for the action, and the load
takes a long time.
+ - from a system standpoint:
+ - In earlier versions, gedit would take so much memory until the system
swapped all other applications to disk, and the system became unusable.
+ - Since Ubuntu 9.04 Beta, gedit crashes without a GUI message, but the
message failed to allocate X bytes in the console.

[Bug 278112] [NEW] Screensaver doesn't start

2008-10-04 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Version: intrepid ibex, 2.24.0-0ubuntu1

This is a continuation from Bug #274926.
When the session is idle (or when gnome-screensaver-command -a has been
issued), the screen starts to fade, but then immediately returns to the desktop
instead of starting the screensaver.

I am red-green color blind (see

in gedit for LaTeX documents.

I usually have no problems to distinguish red and green; Only in certain
combinations it's difficult or impossible, while in some it's working.

I suggest to change the colors to a brighter green and red so they can

I guess Christoph just used the wrong cmdline for getimage? Or is ~ as
directory correct, and it should still use only the pictures folder?

2)
Testing the screensaver for picture slideshow, it shows both hidden and
unhidden files

For the tests, I prepared my pictures folder with two pics, like this:
~/Bilder
~/Bilder/sandwich.png
~/Bilder/.hidden
~/Bilder/.hidden/christmas_sucks.jpg

The .hidden and christmas_sucks.jpg are not in the getimage listing, but
appear in the screensaver.

Hope that helps somehow. Ask for more debugging.

[Bug 160727] ~/.thumbnails should be placed in ~/.cache

[Bug 159685] screensavers-personal-slideshow should not show hidden directories

2007-11-03 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Last time the screensavers-personal-slideshow ran (a screensaver that shows
pictures from ~/Bilder, which is something like ~/Pictures in English), I
saw some pictures that I don't really want people to see; This was the first
time I became aware of the existence of this screensaver. The images that were
shown lie in a hidden directory in my images folder.

I request that this screensaver doesn't traverse hidden directories when
looking for images to show. Hidden directories are hidden for a reason. :-)

[Bug 58179] Re: Doesn't autohide on context menu close

2007-09-10 Thread Sebastian Breier
It's annoying, yes. But I guess from a programmer's standpoint it's just
difficult to fix; I have no insight into the gnome code, but the context
menus are probably under the authority of the trayed applications, and
so it's difficult to find out if they have closed or opened... just a
guess. ;)

[Bug 138390] Won't load images from gnome-vfs source

2007-09-09 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I'm currently using gthumb on my laptop using the Ubuntu LiveCD,
watching images on my workstation using gnome-vfs (SSH connection).

It works alright for the first 57 images (of 707 vacation pictures), but
the 58th image (and subsequent) won't load at all: No thumbnail, and
when double clicking, no image shown. Also, gthumb won't load EXIF data
of these images. Reloading or restarting gthumb doesn't make any
difference.

I don't know how to debug this. strace shows too much information,
gthumb shows no errors on STDERR. Neither /tmp nor /home/ubuntu are
full. Swap has still 32 MB free (not much, but should be enough for a
picture of 3 MB, and it shouldn't matter anyway).

Affected versions are feisty (2.10.2-0ubuntu1) and gutsy
(2.10.5-0ubuntu2).

Other programs (like eog) can still load and show the images, so this is
not a read error or network error.

[Bug 72468] Re: Trash looks empty, isn't

2007-07-23 Thread Sebastian Breier
I use the Trash applet about weekly. It works most of the time. If there
was no trash applet, I'd have no way to empty (or look at) my trash at
all. Yes, there are things like enabling the desktop icon - but before
they're shipping Ubuntu with a desktop trash instead of the trash
applet, I'd rather suggest to fix the bug.

My point is that the software's buggy, yes - but it's far from unusable
for me and so it should stay; Also, the workaround needs such a long
time to implement (and would change the Ubuntu usability) that I'm sure
someone will fix the bug before. No need to remove an app.

[Bug 90339] [edgy] Can't read signed + encrypted mail when sig-key not available

2007-03-07 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I just got a mail that was encrypted (for me) and signed (from the other
person). Because I did not yet have his key, Evolution showed a red error
message about not being able to find the public key, together with the
encrypted mail.

Saving the mail and decrypting on the command line (gpg -d mail) was
possible, though GPG also complained about not being able to verify the
signature.

Evolution should at least decrypt the message, showing only errors about the
signature verification.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Evolution
2. Receive GPG-encrypted -signed mail
3. Open the mail
4. Enter GPG password

Actual results:
I see a red error message about the public key for the signature not being
found + the encrypted mail text.

Expected results:
I'd like to see the decrypted mail text + a signature verification warning.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

[Bug 76919] volume osd displaced

2007-03-03 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

When using the volume osd for the first time after logging in (using the
shortcut keys defined as volume mute, volume up and so on), the on-
screen-display is displaced.

Usually it is placed in the lower center of the screen, but the first
time it is placed slightly right of the center and at the bottom of the
screen.

Purely cosmetic, but still a bug. ;)

[Bug 79233] window title: unnamed window

2007-01-14 Thread Sebastian Breier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

The window that opens when I try to overwrite a CDRW (I can choose between
inserting a new disk, cancelling or overwriting the CDRW; sorry, no screenshot
right now... tell me if necessary) has no title, or rather the title unnamed
window. This should be fixed. Minor bug of course. :-)

The window should have a descriptive name.

Yes, it's the same problem from the desktop. However, I noticed that it
also happens on first suspend/hibernate; There's a really long pause,
the computer doesn't seem to do anything, then the suspend/hibernate

I'll test if this is related to networkmanager (which I suspect).

Neither a gdm bug nor a a real suspend/hibernate bug, but a bug with

Unfortunately, the screenshot only shows a blue video... it is like
that, except the video is still showing in parts (exactly in the
position it would be if I wouldn't rotate the cube).

This is a shot of totem-xine actually, but it happens in both totem-xine
