[Bug 1856507] Re: [nvidia] Login screen doesn't show up after installing the Nvidia driver

2019-12-15 Thread Shahar Or
Thank you for the instructions, Daniel.

When nvidia-driver-435 is not installed, I can get to a console login
prompt from the login screen by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 through 6. But when
nvidia-driver-435 is installed and I press any of those, I get to a
black screen with a blinking cursor.

Any clues on that, please?

[Bug 1852166] Re: [nouveau] Pixel pattern error at 120Hz or 144Hz, but 60Hz works

2019-12-05 Thread Shahar Or
I don't feel that a non-close-up photo could help, but here is one. From
a normal viewing distance, when higher than 60hz, the image seems to
have decreased brightness. Only on close up one can tell that it does
not appear to be brightness, but a wrong pixel pattern.

2019-04-30 Thread Shahar Or
It seems that in a second log in, Guake does not start. Only in the
first login after adding it. And it does not seem like opening the
Startup Applications is the cause of its removal.

[Bug 1826706] Re: Startup Applications forgets changes

2019-04-30 Thread Shahar Or
I did not have the problem in cosmic. Since I upgraded from bionic to
cosmic and then immediately to disco, I did not notice whether this bug
was introduced in cosmic or disco.

Example item would be:

Name: Guake
Command: guake

Will now re-test:

- Opening Startup Applications.
- Item is not there.
- Add the example item from above.
- Hit Close.

Posting this comment and logging out...

So, it seems that it lasts one login and then disappears? Or is it the
opening of the Startup Applications that makes it disappear? I'll check.

[Bug 1710666] [NEW] No resolution until manually adding a nameserver to resolv.conf

2017-08-14 Thread Shahar Or
Public bug reported:

I have no resolution until I manually add a `nameserver 8.8.8.8` to
`/run/resolvconf/resolv.conf`.

And if `resolvconf` is not installed, I don't know how to add a
nameserver. So I keep that installed.

I'm using Network Manager and it should take care of adding nameservers.

I don't know where what is going wrong.

I'm willing to send any necessary info from this system.

[Bug 1244090] Re: Pressing any global keyboard shortcut causes temporary loss of focus

2014-10-05 Thread Shahar Or
Is the loss of focus really temporary? For me, it seems permanent. For
example, in Firefox's, tab groups feature, if I am focused on the title
of a tab group (with the purpose of renaming it) and I switch layout
with +, the focus is lost from that field. And it isn't
temporary. It is permanent. I must refocus there. Is it this bug that
I'm describing?

[Bug 1266179] Re: When `Shift+Alt L` is for switching keyboard layouts, Shift has to be pressed first

2014-03-26 Thread Shahar Or
Sebastien,

I should have wrote that it isn't like this any more.

The bug is no longer present for me. I was, like I originally described
it and now it is no more.

Cool.

[Bug 1292412] Re: Keyboard layout is always English(!)

2014-03-14 Thread Shahar Or
Here's the `unity-settings-daemon --replace --debug` output but it is
not from the first run because I didn't capture the output on that run
by mistake.

Things worked out once I did that. The issue is no longer present. I'll
reopen if this occurs again.

[Bug 1292412] Re: Keyboard layout is always English(!)

2014-03-14 Thread Shahar Or
Sebastien,

I'm running Unity 7 in Trusty. This system has been upgraded since it
was installed from Maverick on 2010-10-12.

It seems that the configuration that I set with the control center don't
have any effect on the keyboard layout.

Using the mouse with the layout switching indicator to select a
different language doesn't actually change the keyboard layout. Whatever
I do with the UI, it seems I always am typing English.

And layout switching via hot-key also does not change the layout, even
in the UI (not to mention actually changing the layout).

I haven't tried changing layout in any other way because I don't know
how to (for example, using command-line).

For other things—the control center works. For example, it changes my
desktop background.

As it is, I can't type my native language in this system.

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-03-14 Thread Shahar Or
Since the Trusty package upgrades from today, selecting a layout doesn't
have any effect—it only types English! Even if English isn't present in
the "Input sources to use:".

Layout switching through any key combination doesn't switch layout.

I reported #1292412.

[Bug 1292412] [NEW] Keyboard layout is always English(!)

2014-03-14 Thread Shahar Or

language in the selector.

It is English even if I remove English from the layouts.

And layout switching via hot key doesn't work no matter what the hot key
is.

Don't know which is the cause of this but probably `unity-control-
center` because `gnome-control-center` wasn't upgraded.

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-01-05 Thread Shahar Or
** Description changed:

  ***
The old PPA, ppa:attente/1218322 is superceded by the following one. You can
remove the old repository using ppa-purge.
  ***

A PPA which should provide some relief for this issue is available at
  https://launchpad.net/~attente/+archive/modifier-only-input-switch. To
  install:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade
  (log out, log in)

If the packages improve the situation for you, you can pin them using:

  sudo apt-mark hold compiz
  sudo apt-mark hold gnome-settings-daemon
  sudo apt-mark hold unity

If the packages don't work for you, you can purge them using:

  sudo ppa-purge ppa:attente/modifier-only-input-switch

  === compiz ===

Impact: modifier-only key bindings need to be independent of key-press
order, there's no support for double tapping two modifier keys of the
  same type

  Test case:
  - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry
settings
  - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source
"['Shift_L']"
  - holding left shift, press and release ctrl
-> the current input source should change

Regression potential: possible, but highly unlikely, that some key
bindings may be triggered due to the removal of some code that would
normally prevent a possible tap from occurring.

  === unity ===

Impact: gnome-settings-daemon eats modifier-only shortcuts preventing
them from propagating down to applications

  Test case:
  - open gnome-control-center's text input settings
  - set the next input source key binding to ctrl+left shift
  - open gnome-terminal
  - press ctrl+shift+t
  -> gnome-terminal should open a new tab

Regression potential: the additional input switch key bindings could
collide with other functionality such as opening the dash or hud

  === gnome-control-center ===

Impact: the UI to change the layout switching keys doesn't work

  Test case:
  - open gnome-control-center's text input settings
  - click on the "next layout key" entry
  - try entering a key combinaison (e.g ctrl-space)
-> the UI should reflect the new keys

Regression potential: that UI was not working before, it should only be
an improvement (some key combos are not working as expected, that's
another issue and shouldn't be mixed with this one)

  === gnome-settings-daemon ===

Impact: attempting to change keyboard layouts using only modifier keys
  doesn't work

  Test case:
  - add at least two input sources through gnome-control-center's text entry
settings
  - use gsettings to set the input switching shortcut to ctrl+left shift:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source
"['Shift_L']"
  - press and release ctrl+left shift
-> the current input source should change

Regression potential: The input switching shortcut might capture other
non-modifier shortcuts, but users will need to consider this when
choosing their switching shortcut anyways. For users this bug affects,
this represents a working solution for a critical bug.

[Bug 1181703] [NEW] Last upgrade broke keyboard layouts configuration

2013-05-19 Thread Shahar Or
Public bug reported:

Dear friends,

Today, after running an upgrade, my layout switching key combo
(Alt+Shift) didn't switch layouts.

I solved this by adding a third layout and removing it.

Perhaps a new configuration format was introduced and not handled in the
upgrade?

Thanks,
Shahar

[Bug 1051552] Re: Hebrew subtitles are encoded ISO-8859-8

[Bug 882255] Re: No administrative actions possible (password refused) after enabling passwordless login

2012-06-02 Thread Shahar Or
** Description changed:

If I choose not to have a password for my operating account, every
operation fails if it needs root access. Reproducible even on a newly
  set up machine. See: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862543

  Release: 11.10

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 11.10 as normal. During installation, when you are asked to
choose a password, enter one, since the installation can not continue if you do
not do so.
  2. Boot the newly installed system and log in as usual.
  3. Choose "System Settings" from the launcher on the left and open "User
Accounts".
  4. In the User Accounts window, click on Unlock at the top right of the
dialog. Enter your user password when prompted.
  5. Click on the four dots next to the "Password" label to change your
password.
  6. Select "Log in without a password" from the dropdown box. Close the window.
  7. Try to perform an action requiring administrative privileges. For example,
try running "sudo apt-get update" from a terminal.

  Expected behavior:
sudo should require the user's password and accept it, or proceed without
requiring any password altogether.

  Actual behavior:
sudo requires the user's password and does not accept it (since it is set to
an empty string in /etc/shadow).

  Further notes:
After disabling the password request at login, the /etc/shadow file related
to the test user account I created looked like this:
  test::15283:0:9:7:::
- This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts
with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given
in order to
+ This shows that the password hash is made completely empty; that conflicts
with the policies listed in /etc/sudoers, which require a password to be given
in order to

  Workaround:
-If you can not perform administrative actions but can still login without a
password, open a terminal and type "passwd". This command should prompt you for
a new password and change it without any problems.
-If you can not login, you can reset your password by booting into recovery
mode and changing it there. Follow the instructions at
.

You may also choose to use a password for your account and to enable
autologin at the same time. This choice will enable you to benefit the
advantage of not entering a password at boot time with the security of
Ubuntu requiring your password when attempting to perform privileged
- actions.

2012-03-03 Thread Shahar Or
Public bug reported:

Dear Ones,

My keyboard layouts and switching options (Alt+Shift) disappeared
completely after I've logged in after upgrading to precise from oneiric.

There was no switching option and there was only the English layout.

Before, I had the Hebrew layout and Alt+Shift as a layout switcher.

[Bug 572118] Re: No option to hide user from facebrowser

2010-12-24 Thread Shahar Or
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

The "Users Settings" application or the Login Screen used to (perhaps in
Jaunty) have an option to set whether or not a user would appear in the face
browser. There is no longer any obvious way to do this.
One may have a computer with multiple users, but only one of whom really
needs to login via gdm (the others being purely ssh users), and as they do not
need to be on the face browser list, having them there makes login for the
other users (or single user in my case) more difficult.
This is linked to some extent with #445123 as that is also a problem with the
lack of configuration for gdm and its facebrowser.
+
+ A workaround:
+ Users with 999 and below are hidden from gdm.
+ To change a user's uid, log in as a different user and go (as root):
+ usermod -u [999 or below] [user name]
+ groupmod -g [same number] [user name]
+ chown -R [user name]: /home/[user name]
