[Bug 2063855] [NEW] desktop-file-utils lists snap-store as a default handler for Debian packages but it doesn't handle them

2024-04-26 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Currently, desktop-file-utils lists the snap store as the default
handler for Debian packages:

$ grep debian /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
application/vnd.debian.binary-package=snap-store_ubuntu-software-local-file.desktop
application/x-debian-package=snap-store_ubuntu-software-local-file.desktop
$

However, as discussed at https://github.com/ubuntu/app-
center/issues/1407 it does not, in fact, have support for handling these
packages.

We should correct this so that handling of the packages falls through to
something that actually does.

[Bug 2028082] Re: Update glib to 2.76.4

2023-09-29 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
There is a new bugfix release in the stable 2.76 series

The current release in Ubuntu 23.04 is 2.76.1

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/-/blob/2.76.4/NEWS

  Test Case 1
  ---
glib has an extensive test suite.

Failing tests will fail the build.
This update will also trigger a lot of autopkgtests.

- Ensure that there aren't autopgktest regressions triggered by this
+ Ensure that there aren't autopkgtest regressions triggered by this
update and that the builds complete successfully

  Test Case 2
  ---
Pretty much all parts of GNOME use GLib, so test anything in the desktop that
you can. If you reboot the machine and can get to the desktop, that's already
tested GLib extensively. But also run applications like the terminal, the file
browser and epiphany-browser

  What Could Go Wrong
  ---
This update contains fixes in multiple places so multiple apps could be
affected. The consequences of a broken GLib can range from some functions
returning bad results sometimes, which have minimal runtime implications, up to
the system simply crashing all the time.

  Other Info
  --
The upstream gnome-remote-desktop maintainer requested that we do this update
to fix a frequent gnome-remote-desktop crash that shows on errors.ubuntu.com

[Bug 1517901] Re: gnome-shell spins over sched_yield with 100% CPU

2023-09-14 Thread Steve Sims
I'm seeing something superficially similar in 20.04 desktop edition, in
a Dell workstation (i.e. h/w box, not a VM).

The desktop from time to time becomes extremely sluggish with long
delays for keystroke inputs and screen refreshes. e.g. we have chromium
pages with real-time clock displays, and in this mode, they only refresh
maybe 3-4 times per minute. Text entered in a terminal may not show for
a minute.

This situation can persist for hours. No obvious errors in system logs.
CPU usage shows gnome-shell at 100% cpu, nothing else abnormal. An
strace on gnome-shell shows a massive stream of sched_yield() = 0.

[Bug 2034579] Re: [FFe] Use tecla to display keyboard layouts

2023-09-12 Thread Steve Langasek
That looks straightforward, with an obvious rollback path. The gnome-
shell switch should be evaluated based on where we are in the release
cycle once its ready, and how smoothly the g-c-c change goes. FFe
granted for the first part, g-c-c + g-i-s.

[Bug 2034276] Re: [FFE] Update gjs to 1.77.90 and switch mozjs102 to mozjs115

2023-09-12 Thread Steve Langasek
From a maintenance perspective, I think there's not much argument for
bumping to mozjs115 despite mozjs102 being EOL, because you say Cinnamon
isn't ready to switch and that means the Security Team will still be
supporting both (one under ESM). If anything, this appears to mean a
net increase in security maintenance work since there will now be two
source packages. And we still have 3 months beyond October of security
support for mozjs102 in main, via lunar.

In terms of tracking GNOME 45 upstream, this sounds sensible. When is
the final gjs 1.78 due out?

I see that there is an apparmor upload for this bug in the lunar queue,
in addition to the evince upload. The apparmor upload adds a line to
abstractions/snap_browsers. This bug report does not explain that the
abstractions/snap_browsers was previously inadequate or that it should
be updated to fix this bug. Please provide more information of why this
apparmor change is needed.

[Bug 1794064] Re: Clicking a hyperlink in a PDF fails to open it if the default browser is a snap

2023-06-16 Thread Steve Langasek
The evince upload to jammy still does:

+Recommends: default-dbus-session-bus | dbus-session-bus,
+   apparmor (>= 3.0.4-2ubuntu2.3),

with the explanation that:

+- debian/control.in: recommend apparmor version that includes the
+ snap_browsers abstraction, or else policy loads will fail.

But the use of #include if exists was supposed to make this unnecessary.
And downgrading the Depends to a Recommends doesn't change the default
behavior here; installing this version of evince will by default pull in
apparmor, even in contexts where apparmor was not previously installed.
(There are not many of those in Ubuntu, which means if apparmor was not
installed it was probably deliberate on the part of the admin!)

I'm rejecting this upload, as to my understanding this is not what we're
meant to have.

[Bug 1886271] Re: HEIF support should be installed by default

2023-06-06 Thread Steve Langasek
This is blocked on bug #1827442.

I also disagree with seeding this directly; we also install webp-pixbuf-
loader by default, and it is pulled in by:

$ reverse-depends webp-pixbuf-loader -c main
Reverse-Depends
===
* eog
* gnome-control-center
* shotwell

Packages without architectures listed are reverse-dependencies in: amd64,
arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x
$

It is not seeded directly. I think having heif-* as a dependency of
these other packages would also be what we want.

Anyway, I am marking this bug as 'wontfix' based on the state of the MIR
for the libheif source package. Feel free to subscribe to that bug, and
if and when that bug is resolved, reopen this bug and resubscribe

[Bug 1979096] Re: gnome-shell search can't launch apps if dock auto-hide is enabled

2023-06-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Marcelo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock into lunar-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/79ubuntu2.23.04.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
lunar to verification-done-lunar. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-lunar. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

The latter.

Confirmed that it does not appear in the output of

gnome-extensions list --enabled

However, I'm still seeing the buggy behavior when switching workspaces.

Even if I select the option for 'Workspaces on all displays' option, or

[Bug 2021366] [NEW] strange window focus across multiple workspaces

2023-05-26 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

On my system, I use multiple workspaces across multiple monitors. (I
don't at this point remember how I configured multiple workspaces; I
know it's not in the default gnome-settings UI anymore, I thought I had
configured it via gnome-tweaks but I also don't find it in gnome-tweaks
today.)

In kinetic, the behavior was that when switching between workspaces,
only windows on the primary display would swap; windows on the secondary
display would persist across workspaces. Weird, unexpected, but ok I
adapted and made use of it.

In lunar, the behavior is the same *except* that when switching
workspaces, instead of the window focus returning to whichever window
was previously in the foreground on that workspace, the focus jumps to
the window on the secondary display. This is unexpected and unhelpful.

[Bug 2015697] Re: seahorse crashed with SIGSEGV in seahorse_place_get_label()

2023-04-19 Thread Steve Beattie
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1993226] [NEW] mutter autopkgtests fail to detect regressions in mesa

2022-10-17 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

a last-hour upload of mutter for kinetic release fails to build from
source on armhf due to what appears to be a regression in mesa's
llvmpipe implementation in the mesa 22.2.1-1ubuntu1 build.

If this is a regression in mesa, it should have been possible to detect
it before mesa was promoted, via autopkgtests in the mutter package.

Counterintuitively, mutter declares autopkgtests, but the autopkgtests
do NOT test any of the OpenGL functionality via the mutter "nested
view". Therefore the regression was only detected at the next upload of
mutter, NOT before mesa was promoted to the release, when we want to be
catching it.

Please fix mutter to ensure that the autopkgtests have at least as much
coverage as the build-time tests, which is the right way around.

[Bug 1988490] [NEW] Shotwell can't import videos with filenames longer than 63 chars

2022-09-01 Thread Steve Chadsey
Public bug reported:

After importing photos and videos into shotwell, I noticed that several
of the media files did not get imported. The missing files had filenames
longer than 63 characters. In the shotwell log these errors were
reported:

L 218103 2022-09-01 20:17:12 [WRN] ImportPage.vala:1424: Skipping import
of /DCIM/awesome video of loki running across yard and exploring and
don't eat that.avi: name too long

The main problem here is that this seems to be an arbitrary limitation
of the program. Filenames can be up to 255 characters; shotwell should
be able to import files regardless of the filename length.

The other problem is that itt is not clear to the end user that these
files do not get imported. There is no UI message. The user has to
review the log.

[Bug 1948881] Re: XSane plugin not available in GIMP File menu

2022-08-24 Thread Steve Grace
Per renbag's suggestion I installed package "sane" which contains a GIMP
plugin for xscanimage. It's more simplistic than xsane but the GIMP
integration works fine and it seems to be a good workaround for now.

[Bug 1968213] Re: Icon theme reverts to Yaru when entering Appearance settings

2022-08-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Karol, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-control-center into jammy-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-
center/1:41.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy.
