[Bug 1935777] [NEW] Power Saving settings have incomprehensible meanings/labels for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Public bug reported: In the Power Saving section of the Power tab of the Settings app, there are two switches, one labelled "Wi-Fi" with subheading "Wi-Fi can be turned off to save power" and the other labelled "Bluetooth" with subheading "Bluetooth can be turned off to save power". On my machine, the "Wi-Fi" switch is off and the "Bluetooth" switch is on. (Screenshot attached.) I do not know what these switches mean, and I do not know what will change if I change their settings. Does this mean * yes Ubuntu is permitted to switch off your wifi to save power but it's not permitted to switch off your Bluetooth, or * it is permitted to switch off your Bluetooth but not permitted to switch off your wifi, or * your bluetooth is already switched off to save power but wifi is always on, or * wifi is already switched off to save power but bluetooth is always on, or * something else entirely? I am utterly confused. [Bug 1697920] [NEW] Gnome Software front end showed spinner on all actions; had to kill service process to fix
Public bug reported: When opening Gnome Software, the front screen worked fine for me (showing the featured app, editor's picks and so on) but taking any action (clicking a different tab, or clicking an application, or doing a search) showed an empty window with a spinner. There was a long-running "/usr/bin/gnome-software --gapplication-service" process running; killing that process and then starting Gnome Software made everything work again (and updated the featured app to be the current one). [Bug 1660855] [NEW] Can't start gnome-software to show a particular snap package
Public bug reported: I'd like to be able to launch gnome-software showing the details page for a particular snap. I can do this for packages from the Ubuntu archive (gnome-software --details-pkg=inkscape works fine, for example), and gnome-software _supports_ snaps: if I search for ohmygiraffe in gnome-software it finds that snap package no problem. But "gnome- software --details-pkg=ohmygiraffe" does not work, and there seems to be no equivalent option for snaps. I can pass --search=ohmygiraffe but that shows search results with one matching result, not the actual install screen for the snap. [Bug 1581782] [NEW] Printed filed are incomplete (missing all text, some images) in evince but not flpsed
Public bug reported: When I try to print PDFs from evince, the resulting printed page contains only the first header image (if any) of the PDF and none of the other images or text. Additional information: 1. printing text from other non-PDF applications, such as LibreOffice Writer, works fine 2. printing the same PDF from flpsed works fine 3. printing the same PDF from xournal shows the same problem This suggests that the issue is not specific to evince but is something lower-level, but I don't know which lower-level component would be the problem. Since printing works fine from some places I don't believe this is a printer problem, but if it helps my printer is a networked Kyocera Mita FS-1010. I have tried using both the "Kyocera FS-1020 Foomatic/Postscript [en]" driver and the "recommended" "Kyocera Mita FS-1010 [en]" driver and the same problem is evident. [Bug 1099972] Re: Bluetooth devices are not able to control and display playing music from apps and web apps consistently
This isn't just about the media keys. Remote Bluetooth devices, such as car stereos, can also display the name, duration, and current position of a song that's playing. The media keys don't know that, and shouldn't. Possibly this could be implemented by both indicator-sound and gnome- settings-daemon working in concert; the reason I suggested that it should be implemented *by* indicator sound is that indicator-sound already knows what's playing and what's next, and it knows how to control the currently playing media player, all via MPRIS. Therefore, implementing this all in indicator-sound would mean that only one thing on the device needs to know how to implement the complicated Bluetooth APIs, and any Ubuntu app which correctly integrates with the Sound Menu will also work perfectly with Bluetooth devices without having to do *anything* else, even handling media keys. A music application should not hav to itself contain a bunch of bluetooth code for sending song metadata, I think. Even if the media keys stuff does get handled by gnome-settings-daemon, the Sound Menu should be involved in order to send the metadata of the currently playing song to a remote bluetooth device, so I'm re-adding indicator-sound to this. ** Package changed: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) => indicator-sound (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1099972 Title: Bluetooth devices are not able to control and display playing music from apps and web apps consistently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-sound/+bug/1099972/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1086208] [NEW] Shake password window immediately, not after a few seconds
Public bug reported: The password dialog to sign back in when the screen is locked shakes if an incorrect password is entered, and this is a good idea. However, I think it would be improved if it shook immediately when an incorrect password is entered. I understand that delaying for a few seconds is a good idea (it prevents password-guess bombardment) but currently if I enter my password and get it wrong, I see the password dialog freeze for a few seconds and *then* shake. So, after about 500ms, I *know* that it's going to shake, but it doesn't happen; I have to wait. I think the experience would be improved if the shake happened immediately, even if I am prevented from trying again for a few seconds. [Bug 799601] [NEW] Can't see that a long-running large-data file copy is progressing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus If copying a large amount of data on a relatively slow network connection, it's impossible to see whether the copy is actually working or has frozen. For example, showing "17.2GB of 30GB copied (220k/sec), estimated time remaining 18 hours". If that copy process freezes, or the network drops out, it's almost impossible to tell that it's done so; the 17.2GB will eventually change to 17.3GB, but you have to watch the thing for 5-10 minutes to see that change. The progress bar will not move for the same amount of time, and that's even harder to detect a change in anyway. The average transfer speed also doesn't help; if you've had a long sustained transfer at 220k/sec (12 hours, say, so far) and the current speed is actually 6k/sec, the average won't change fast enough to be detected. Note: this is not a call for some sort of "fake progress indicator", like a spinner, unless that spinner actually stops spinning if progress stops. I had to resort to dropping to the terminal and "ls -lR"ing the copying files to see if the size of one of them was incrementing (which is very hard, because you don't know which one is currently being copied and it may be in a heavily nested subfolder). One obvious but user-hostile fix would be to show an actual byte count for amount copied (18253611008 bytes of 30GB copied) because you can see that changing. Another might be to change the "average speed counter" to much much more heavily weight recent changes to the speed, but it wouldn't be visible that that was actually the case and so would only help people who knew that nautilus did this. A third way might be to have a "details" expander which shows the name and byte count of the current file being copied (at which point this becomes fix 1, show the byte count, but hidden behind an expander). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/799601 Title: Can't see that a long-running large-data file copy is progressing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/799601/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 721585] [NEW] "Free space" figure in CD burner is misleading: looks like there is not enough space on CD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner When burning an ISO file to a disc (for example, an Ubuntu ISO, as recommended on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Ubuntu), the "Write to Disc" window says "Select a disc to write to", and shows (with a blank CD) "Blank CD-R Disc: 4.4MB of free space". (See screenshot.) It is not clear that that 4.4MB is what will remain *after* the chosen ISO has been built: that is, that the CD size is actually 4.4MB *bigger* than the ISO. I thought that I had a broken CD which I'd previously burned as a coaster and so only had 4.4MB of space in total on it, and spent time going through my blank CDs to try and find one with enough "free space" to actually burn the ISO I want. Suggested fixes: 1. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: 702MB of free space" 2. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: 4.4MB more free space than needed" 3. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: enough space available" 4. Something else. However, if the unread status of that email changes to "read" by some means other than me reading the email in Evolution itself (for example, if I have Evolution showing GMail via IMAP, and then I read the email in the GMail web interface), the messaging indicator stays highlighted. This means that even though I've already read the email (in the GMail web interface) and the email's status in Evolution is "read" (i.e., Evolution *knows* that I've read the email, and no longer displays it in bold), I still have to click on the messaging indicator and then choose Evolution, to make the messaging indicator realise that the email is read. Evolution should update the indicator if a previously-unread email changes to "read" so that the indicator is no longer highlighted. [Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
Mat, that's why my original set of suggestions ("Create Compressed File" and so on) were to be taken with a large pinch of salt, because I couldn't think of anything better :) However, there are, I think, three possible cases: 1. collecting many files together into one file and compressing that one file (zip, rar, tar.gz) 2. taking one file and compressing it (gz) 3. collecting many files together into one file and not compressing it (tar) I don't have any user data on this (and some would be useful), but I suspect that case (1) is the most common, and case (2) trivially collapses into case 1 (since there's not much difference between a gzipped file and a zip file with one file in it, and I would imagine that anyone who understands the difference can handle the difference manually). Hence "Create Compressed File": that caters for cases (1) and (2), and use-cases for case (3) are relatively uncommon (and I believe that people who need uncompressed tarballs know enough to know that file- roller will do it anyway, even though the name is a bit wrong). -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
To reiterate the point I made (in the attached Gnome bug) when I filed this originally, a reasonable proportion of computer users do not recognise the word "archive" as referring to a file containing other files. I asked the original user who prompted me to file this bug, and I also surveyed around ten other people (members of my family, non- technical computer users in my office, and one guy at a bus stop), and every one of them (all native English speakers) thought that an "archive" was a big dusty room full of books and folders, like a library. None of them recognised the term "archive" as being anything to do with computer files, and after I explained the meaning to (most of) them, they said that it didn't really make sense as a word. Whether "Archive Manager" is a technically "correct" term is rather beside the point, I feel; if users don't understand what the word means then it's not useful to them. My friend (who originally asked the question which caused me to file this bug) was looking for a way to create a Zip file; when I explained that "Archive Manager" was the way to do that, he said that he'd seen that in the menus but hadn't tried using it because he didn't want to manage an archive (because an archive is a big dusty room full of books). -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 348915] [NEW] Using projector replaces compiz w/ metacity; stopping does not switch back
Public bug reported: When I use System > Preferences > Screen Resolution to use an external projector on my laptop, I lose all my desktop effects (the Scale plugin, dropshadows, mousewheel on backdrop to switch virtual desktops), which seems to be because compiz is replaced with metacity. This is presumably because metacity handles dualhead configurations better, which I can understand (although hopefully it will be fixed eventually). However, when I unplug the projector and disable the external screen, metacity is not replaced with compiz, so I do not get my desktop effects back (and I have to log out and log back in again to restore them). ** Affects: control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Using projector replaces compiz w/ metacity; stopping does not switch back https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/348915 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 335589] [NEW] File-roller is not on any menus
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: file-roller As far as I can tell, file-roller is not available through the GUI in a default Ubuntu install. No "Archive Manager" or "file-roller" option is available on any menus, even though the program is installed. This means that in order to create a zip file you have to know that the program exists, you have to know that it's called "file-roller" (which is unlikely to be guessed by someone), and you have to run it manually from a terminal or from Alt+F2's run dialog. This essentially means that a new user will conclude that Ubuntu cannot create zip files, even though it can. ** Affects: file-roller (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- File-roller is not on any menus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335589 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
