[Bug 1730174] Re: [artful] mouse clicks are completely ignored both in Gnome's gdm and once logged in to the desktop

2018-02-05 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Hello,

I cannot test it anymore in Ubuntu, as I have removed Ubuntu from this
machine, but I do *not* believe that it related to Wayland and I'm
positive that it relates to the NVidia proprietary driver on my machine
as explained above.

For I discovered the same issue after installing Manjaro with Cinnamon
(that does *not* use Wayland) on the machine :

- Immediately after install (with the default free "Nouveau" driver, the mouse
was working correctly)
- I installed the NVidia 304 proprietary driver, and immediately the problem
appeared : mouse clicks not working anymore.
- I then reverted back to nouveau, and the problem was solved.

I have all the reasons to believe that seing the exact same problem in
Manjaro that I had with Ubuntu shows that the problem has the same
cause...

[Bug 1730174] Re: [artful] Mouse broken after upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10

2018-01-14 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I could narrow this bug with a 100% certitude (and confirm it also on
Manjaro Linux on the same machine) with using the NVidia 304 proprietary
driver.

My machine has a NVidia C77 [GeForce 8200] (rev a2) which is unsupported
with latest NVidia 340 drivers (the system justs freezes).

It used to work perrfectly using NVidia 304 "legacy" driver until
upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10, but something must have recently changed in
the way Gnome or Xorg handles the mouse and the legacy NVidia driver has
probably not been updated, alas.

THe bug does *NOT* exist when using the "nouveau" driver. Unfortunately,
its doesn't perform as well as the proprietray NVidia did... But at
least the mouse works again.

[Bug 221112]

2014-05-12 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
BTW, about the punctuation signs that, in French, requires a nbsp before
them, i.e. " ; : ! ? " (for perfect typographic correctness, while
usually few people know about this and nobody really cares...) :

Usual word processing programs, such as OpenOffice / LibreOffice, when
configured to the french locale, add these typographically required
nbsps automagically, so people actually do not have to type the nbsp,
which makes the need for an easy entry of these still less of an issue.

Should we follow the slope of stealing a useful right [Ctrl] key for
this, then me might well in the future steal the left one for the dash "
- ", as in french, we typographically use at least 3 different lenghts
for dashes. As previously, word processing software usually transforms
the "normal dash" into the "typographically correct dash"... Nope, all
this mess of quite complex and unusual characters is the very reason for
which meta and compose keys exist in the first place...

[Bug 221112]

2014-05-11 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
About a "short nbsp" in french, let's make it perfectly clear that there
must be about a hundred professionnal typographists in the whole country
who care about it - most of them not using Linux BTW - and the rest of
the ~40 million computer users here don't give a shit about a "short
nbsp" and don't even know what it is, feel perfectly happy with the
"correct french" they write without it, and many of them just would like
their fscking right [Ctrl] key back.

If a so thin minority of professional typographists that in no way
represent the average french "Joe" user want this modifier, it's
perfectly OK that they devise their own special layout for their on
needs, but by no means impose it on the rest of us.

Okay, your "vote" is currently happening on

with 4 new entries today (from different people), 100% of them saying :

« PLEASE GIVE US OUR RIGHT [CTRL] KEY BEHAVING AS A [CTRL] KEY BACK !!!
»

To summarize further, AFAIK, there is ONE person in the world happy that
the french right [CTRL] has been broke, 100% of the other french
keyboard users who want their [CTRL] key back,...

...and the rest of the world doesn't use a french keyboard and doesn't
care.

Would you need a vote, I suggest that you put a survey system online by
yourself on any web page that you'd like (so you know the vote is
"impartial"), and we let people know about it...

If you asks for a vote, it sounds logical that you organize it.

[Bug 221112]

2014-03-19 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Even though I've been an IT professional for the past 3O years, I went
to a large computer store in France over lunch time, to find out if such
thing as a [CtrlGr] key could possibly exist on a french keyboard.

Let me tell you : I couldn't find any.

OTOH, I was surprised to notice that some tablets with removable
keyboards, as well as some ultrabooks with space-saver keyboards, did
not have a right [Ctrl] key at all !

All have a left [Ctrl], left [Alt] and right [AltGr].

The vast majority of times, they have a right [Ctrl] key which is
similar to the left one.

But sometimes there is no right [Ctrl] at all !

This single fact prohibits a standard keymap giving a different
assignation to the right [Ctrl] key, because this key may well not even
exist on a given keyboard ! Thus you cannot rely on it for any feature
that could be positively necessary.

That makes Yet Another Good Reason™ to keep the good 'ole behaviour of
having 2 similarily mapped [Ctrl] keys.

[Bug 221112]

2014-03-19 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Repeating :

1/ Standard French keyboard has NO [CtrlGr] key. It does have 2 normal
[Ctrl] keys bearing the exact same label. The right [Ctrl] key actually
is a right [Ctrl] key and no other modifier or whatever.

2/ There are quite a *lot* of common, daily used by professional IT
staff, keyboard shortcuts or combinations such as [Ctrl]-[Arrows],
[Ctrl]-[PageUp/Down], [Ctrl]-[Home], [Ctrl]-[End], plus all such
combinations adding [Shift], then [Ctrl]-L, [Ctrl]-M...

-> All these day-long used combinations can be conveniently played with
2 (or 3) fingers when the right [Ctrl] key actually is a right [Ctrl]
key, and changing this key breaks them all, needing people to start
using both hands for typing what they have typed with 2 fingers for 30
YEARS ! And mistype. And mistype. And mistype.

3/ The issue with Rythmbox looks solved for long, and who wants to break
professional use of a keyboard for a solved bug in a music player ?

4/ Nobody (normal user) I talked to has ever heard about a "level 5"
story, nor do people give a damn.

5/ Everybody wanting to type non-breakable space in word processors
(LibreOffice...) do it with [Ctrl]-[Shift]-[Space] and don't need a
specifically modified right Ctrl for that.

6/ Breaking right [Ctrl] breaks other apps that specifically request it
NOT to be broke, such as [VirtualBox] - again professional stuff.

Breaking the right [Ctrl] keys on the french keyboard is plain stupid,
period.

[Bug 221112]

2014-03-18 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I had yet another good reason to revert to a "normal right [CTRL] key"
on a Fedora this morning:

I was working in a terminal with several open terminal tabs. Switching
between tabs is made using [Ctrl]-[PageUp] and [Ctrl]-[PageDown] - same
goes with other Gnome tabbed apps, as well as Firefox and Chromium...

If you have a working right [Ctrl] key, switching tabs is easy, you just
need 2 fingers from your right hand.

If you don't have a working right [Ctrl] key, you need both hands.

Having the broken right [Ctrl] key was so annoying at work, that I had
to fix it immediately.

[Bug 221112]

2014-03-13 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
(In reply to comment #50)
> Could someone create poll on some french(belgian) web site, linux-oriented.
> Which behavior would be preferable?

A poll would be pointless as its representativeness would be very hard to
determine.
Most users don't care "as long as it works" and may not even know there is a
poll somewhere.

The matter is : French keyboard have, and have always had since the PC
keyboards exist (that makes 30 years), 2 similar [CTRL] keys that have
the same printed label and are expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

AND THEY ALWAYS HAVE BEEN SO IN ANY LINUX OR "other OS" keymaps, and
especially default keymaps - if anybody wants to customize HER keyboard,
then it's HER choice, but by no means a default.

OTOH French keyboard have a left [Alt] key and a right [AltGr] keys
having different labels and expected to have different roles.

This is extremely clear. Both [CTRL] keys should act as [CTRL] keys.
Left one, rigth one, period.

Some softwares - such as Virtualbox - will want to use the left or right
CTRL key for some specific role, and then it's printed in their
documentation and the corresponding key is supposed to exist and be
correctly mapped. It is nonsense to find oneself with a keymap in which
some highly classical and standard key just doesn't happen to exist
anymore just because of a once-upon-a-time existing issue (since solved)
with a shortcut on a music player that nobody cares about !?!?!? You
don't want to break a professional keyboard just because of arguable
choices in a toy !

[Bug 221112]

2014-03-13 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I spent a couple days extremely disappointed to have a broken right
[CTRL] key on a french keyboard on recent Arch installs, thus being
unable to use VirtualBox properly, and googling around (and let me tell
you that my googling showed me a *lot* of french people are really upset
with this as well) I finally found out that this breakage comes from
this commit :

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-
config/commit/symbols/fr?id=518c769df2e9ce70cb721769a08b81504f243b2a

Let me tell you that this breakage of right [CTRL], assigning it to
ANOTHER function than right [CTRL] is completely inappropriate and
upsetting.

I therefore hereby specifically request this absurd modification to be
reverted.

[Bug 1083136] [NEW] Rhythmbox cannot rip CD to MP3

2012-11-26 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

When trying to rip a CD to MP3 "Extract to library", I get a message
stating that required libraries are missing. Trying to install these
libraries fail - in the attached pictures, it would want to install i386
libs on and AMD64 machine, and the install button is greyed out - but on
an i386 machine, it simply says that required libs don't exist...

Well, the bottom line is that is won't encode to MP3, period.

An interesting point is that, on the i386 machine, I also have KDE, and
there Dolphin is perfectly able tp encore the CD to MP3, so I know for
sure that "required libs" are properly installed on the system...

[Bug 1043296] Re: Wrong HD free space displayed by system monitor when using BTRFS

2012-08-29 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
** Description changed:

When using BTRFS with several mounted BTRFS subvols from the same BTRFS
volume, gnome-system-monitor adds the free space off all mountpoints,
where they in fact share the same HD space.

So the amount of free space displayed by gnome-system-monitor is several
time bigger than the actual value (actual value mutipmlied by the number
  of mounted subvols).

[Bug 838714] Re: ISO testing: "Examples" folder and "Install Ubuntu 11.10" icons overlap each other on the desktop

2012-03-12 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
That's not only live ISO testing. I've been having this very problem on
my (1024x600) netbook since Oneiric (or was it Natty ?) and it's still
there in Precise Beta :

- Right after login, I always have the 3 topmost icons on my desktop OK,
while the lower-end icons are all "piled" on top of each other.

- I usually right-click the desktop then "sort icons by name", that
fixes the issue... until newt login where the mess is back.

So that's definitelly not a live-CD issue, but a more general Ubuntu
desktop issue.

[Bug 882956] Re: [Oneiric] [Dell XPS M1330] Gnome session exits with XI_BadDevice error

2011-11-29 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Might or not be related... As I'm back to my good old KDE, I couldn't
give more feedback on this issue.

But yesterday I've noticed that my KDE had turned off desktop effects
"because it crashed once", and I reactivated them. It works. But since
I've noticed a couple of KDE session crashes at system wakeup - just as
Gnome does - where it was never happening before I reactivated KDE's
desktop effects...

[Bug 882956] Re: [Oneiric] [Dell XPS M1330] Gnome session dies at resume

2011-11-06 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I'm normally more of a KDE user (and I went back to KDE because of this
error, among other issues and dislikes I have with Gnome).

However I've been back to Gnome for testing this issue, and have to say
that since latest updates, I've been unable to reproduce the Gnome crash
at system wake up. (I've done it only 5-6 times without a crash, where
previously it would crash most, if not all, the times).

- I've tried without the above script, so the conditions are the same as
before (except for the DM maybe ? I'm back to KDM...), and would have
nothing more to report anyway as I couldn't observe the crash.

So I'm not sure whether the issue is still there or has been fixed ? I
will try again for a while and let you know.

[Bug 882956] [NEW] [Oneiric] [Dell XPS M1330] Gnome session dies at resume

2011-10-28 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh

This issue looks somewhat recent, I don't recall it ever happening in
the past.

On Dell XPS M1330, Oneiric, when resuming from "suspend to RAM" the X
server and Gnome session dies and I'm back to the DM.

I file this under "Gnome-session" as the same machine shows absolutely
no problem when resuming in a KDE session.

[Bug 857168] Re: Screen goes black while watching video

2011-10-12 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Yes AND No.

With latest Oneiric updates as of right now (2011/10/12 16:07 UTC) :

- "xset q" shows DPMS active with all timeouts set to zero (where they
previously were set to 600 before updates).

- Watching a movie (with the screen "fade to black" set to 30 minutes in
control panel) :

1/ Previously the screen went off (suddenly) after 10 minutes - due to
the DPMS timeout - This behaviour is now gone.

2/ But now the screen fades out to black after 30 minutes - as set per
control panel.

=> With previous Ubuntu versions, watching a movie with Totem video
player prevented/inhibited the screensaver to kick in and the screen to
go black. It's not the case anymore so the regression is still there

** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

probably easy checking and fixing, still "undecided" and "unassigned".

[Bug 869795] [NEW] Gnome session starts with maximum sound level

2011-10-07 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

On Dell Inspiron 9300, Oneiric beta (all updates as of 2011/10/07) the
"Ubuntu" Gnome session starts with sound volume to the max, producing a
tremendously loud session opening jingle.

Lowering volume, logging out and rebooting, the problem is back (set
volume isn't remembered).

This doesn't happen in KDE sessions on same machine.

(As a safeguard I would request that no opening sound should ever be
produced with a volume set higher than a reasonable default... Figure a
laptop with good loudspeakers opening with a TREMENDOUSLY LOUD sound in
a meeting room, train, whatever...)

=> Same issue also seen on another machine (Compaq Mini)

[Bug 857168] Re: Screen goes black while watching video

The matter is that an external monitor is turned into standby/suspend by
using DPMS , not barely displaying a black image...

Furthermore, all this had been perfect for years (on same system) and
has been broken by upgrading Natty => Oneiric Beta.

2011-09-30 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
There are good chances, and that would make bug #862139 a duplicate of
the present bug.

"xset q" shows DPMS is active with all of its timeouts set to 600,
although no such thing should be set according to my control panel
settings.

xset -dpms turns it off, but I'll have to wait until I watch a movie to
see if it helps in that precise situation.

[Bug 858888] Re: [Oneiric] Poor man's control center

2011-09-26 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
About discussing all these issues in the Wiki or elsewhere, all of these
are mostly developpers tool, to decide things in advance. But the very
purpose of beta versions is to get early user feedback, which will come
as bug reports and feature requests rather that on developer's forums,
mailing-lists, wikis...

Don't ask users to use developper tools, but anyway let user give
feedback and express their concerns and findings... Bug trackers are a
nice tools for that.

[Bug 858888] Re: [Oneiric] Poor man's control center

2011-09-26 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
About having to find the different setup tools in the applications menu
or system settings panel, I can share a couple thoughts :

1/ In the past it seems that a number of optional applications (i.e.
gparted) found their way into the config panel if installed, and not if
not installed. It worked 6 months ago, why couldn't it still work ?

2/ About the remote desktop server, that's the kind of thing a newbie
user may need to activate easily to get remote support (I do give
benevolent support myself to a number of newbie users). A newbie user
may have no clue that this feature even exists, where to find it etc.
Making it obvious in the system Control Panel is a good way to help the
newcomer find things she may need.

3/ Same rationale would apply for easily configuring personal network
shares, or checking the hard disk health, etc.

Shouldn't this be the case, the very existence of a Control Panel would
be of little interest. After all each and every tool could be found
separately from the apps menu, isn't it ?

Kind regards.

[Bug 858888] Re: [Oneiric] Poor man's control center

2011-09-26 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Thanks for your time and explanations Dylan.

Obviously we disagree on some aspects, I'm not going to answer in too
long here because you're right on one point : a bug reporting tool is
not a web forum, so this is surely not the right place for arguing for
pages.

So I'm first being more specific just on a short technical point : About
the DM. Previous Ubuntu releases did not have a config tool for choosing
WHICH DM to use (you're right) but they DID have a config tool to
configure HOW the default DM (which was GDM) behaved, i.e.:

- Should we list the existing users and let the user click, or have the user
type the username ?
- Should we have autologin for a given user name ?
- After some timeout or immediately ?
- Etc.

This DID exist in Natty Control Panel and previously. This has
disappeared in Oneiric.

About the fact of having to file several separate bug reports for all
this, OTOH, I strongly disagree with you. IMHO the "Control Panel" is
ONE thing, seing it having lost 80% of its contents is ONE issue. Thus
ONE bug report - even though every single lost icon could be considered
separately, seing an almost empty control panel where it used to be
pretty full and complete is ONE issue from a user (not a developper)
standpoint.

Developpers can ask users to cooperate and file bug reports. Users like
myself do spend much time beta-testing stuff and filing bug reports
(which doesn't always receive wife-approval ;-) - for the good of all
the Ubuntu community.

But once a bug report is filed, it's extremely demotivating, as the bug
reporter, to be told "so instead of one bug report about this, please
file 3 others about this, that, and there".

As a (stupid) user, I find an issue, I report the issue. If I'm asked
for more precisions, logs, screenshots, I'll give them happily. But it's
definitely not the user's business to sort things out further. It's a
developper's issue, it's a distro maintainer's issue, etc, to dispatch a
given existing bug report into pieces if needed. The user has no clue -
and doesn't need to have any - in the way the engine is built.

So IMHO an almost empty Control Panel is ONE issue. Please feel free to
dispatch it into several sub-issues if you feel so, but don't tell me
this report is invalid in itself.

Kind regards.

[Bug 858888] [NEW] [Oneiric] Poor man's control center

2011-09-25 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Upgrading from Natty to Oneiric, and furthermore, comparing Natty and
Oneiric's machines, it's really impressive to notice how many features
have been lost in Gnome's Control Center, making Oneiric's one truly a
"Poor man's control center".

For example :

- No Screen Saver config in Oneiric (this one misses SO MUCH !)
- No Connection Window DM (GDM/LightDM...) config in Oneiric
- No Remote Desktop config icon...
- No "personal network shares" icon...
- No CompizConfig integration...
- No HD utility icon...
- No Gparted icon...
- No Synaptic / Package manager icon...
- No system monitor icon...
- No Computer janitor icon...
- No Network tools icon...
- No logs viewer icon...
- No password and keys management icon...

Many icons lead to poor or incomplete panels (energy / screen are very
poor...)

So WTF is left ? Is this the new iPad control panel or whatever ?

OTOH:
- The default applications are set in a completely stupid place ("System
Information")

And OTOH:
- 2 different "Keyboard" and "Keyboard layout" icons in 2 different sections of
Oneiric's CC: Makes no sense
- 2 "Ubuntu One" icons in Oneiric's CC: why not three ?

And OTOH:
- "Displays" and "Startup Applications" have migrated into the User Menu, where
they have nothing to do (and will be very rarely used for most people except
executives using videoprojectors for presentations, most of which don't use
Linux anyway...) so we congest and clutter a menu with useless stuff for no
reason.

What a mess !

Please note that the attached monitor turned to powersave mode after ~19

[Bug 857168] [NEW] [Oneiric] [Regression] Screen goes black while watching video

2011-09-23 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

While watching a video in Ubuntu Gnome/Unity GUI with the video player
(Totem), screen goes black after a while, where the use of a video
player was inhibiting the screensaver to kick in in previous Ubuntu
versions.

Furthermore, in Control panel, the setting for screen to go black cannot
be set to "never", maximum is "one hour", which doesn't give the user
the choice to use this feature or not.

Furthermore, Even when set to "One hour", my screen ingores the setting
and goes black about every 10 minutes whatsoever.

What a pain in the ... to have the screen go black every 10 minutes
while watching a movie !

This bug is *NOT* a duplicate of bug #23810. Bug #23810 talks about a

Furthermore, bug #23810 is dated October, 2005 !! Is such a usability
bug has stayed in Evolution for 6 years () that would mean that
Evolution is a piece of trash that wouldn't deserve being used.

It's been mentioned that the present bug is a *regression* so it cannot

[Bug 787349] [NEW] [Natty] Cannot exit screensaver : frozen

2011-05-23 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Noticed recently (but often) on Dell XPS M1330 (Intel graphics), looks
like a regression :

- When system has gone to screensaver, then screen turned off, moving
mouse brings back a screen on which screensaver is static (stopped),
mouse cursor moving OK, but no password dialog, no way to get out of
this.

- Shitfing back and forth to text console and X11 works, text console
works OK.

- The screensaver view gives the impression something works and it
"would want to get out of this" : Seems to react to typing password
blindly (disk activity, mouse cursor changes shape) but the screensaver
static image stays there forever.

There's absolutely no way to get out of this except for rebooting the
system completely. (restart gdm isn't enough)

@Sebastien Bacher #12 : No, I do not have evolution-rss installed, so it
definitely isn't the cause for this.

[Bug 773063] Re: [Natty] gnome-about-me box doesn't remember contents

2011-05-01 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I have tested this on 3 machines, all upgraded from Maverick to Natty,
all having more or less the same setup.

The "about me" box doesn't remember its contents on one machine, but
works properly on the 2 other ones. Don't know why, however.

[Bug 774047] [NEW] [Natty] Evolution new account creation dialog corruption

2011-04-30 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Display controller: Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated Graphics
Controller

In Evolution's "new account creation" dialogs, legend texts disappear a
few seconds after appearing, leaving boxes to fill but you don't know
what are the questions :-\

As a workaround, shifting back and forth between windows with
[Alt]-[Tab] cause text to be redrawn... and redisappear a few seconds
after, but you can eventually complete filling the dialog boxes...

[Bug 774029] [NEW] [Natty] Evolution window cannot fit in 1024 width

2011-04-30 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In Ubuntu Natty default config, Evolution's window cannot be made to fit
into a "1024 x something" screen. If you try to reduce the window width,
its minimum stays a bit wider than 1024. Even when "maximized" the
window contents seem to be wider than screen.

That's EXTREMELY annoying as 1024 is the standard width for about all
netbooks and many monitors that "used to be considered big" once upon a
time...
