[Bug 1905946] Re: Mouse stop moving after few seconds. restart at click

2020-11-28 Thread tj
Similar issues with Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse after updating
Hirsute. Mouse freezes intermittently but is mostly usable. Keyboard is
essentially unusable (this is posted via onscreen keyboard). All
hardware fully functional on Hirsute with 5.8.0-25 and 5.8.0-26 before
updates on 11/27 and/or 11/28. Overlapping updated packages with
corradoventu appear to be linux-firmware and apport related ones.

Booting in recovery mode on both kernels keyboard is also unusable. No
issues in updated Groovy or elementary OS.

Intel i9, Asus MB

[Bug 1744370] [NEW] 'systemd-sleep suspend' hung after an abortive suspend/resume

2018-01-19 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

On an Asus T300CHI with 16.04 and kernel 4.13.0-25-lowlatency a suspend
operation almost immediately resumed but "systemd-sleep suspend" was
still running and as a result network-manager thought it was in state
"asleep" and would not re-enable networking.

Some system logs looked like they weren't getting the normal flow of
messages and 'systemctl status' for the suspend.target and systemd-
suspend.service showed they thought the system was suspending/suspended.

This was around 07:36. I left the system most of the day until I could
investigate.

I noticed the dmesg showed "Suspended for 23820.656 seconds" when it
resumed/failed to suspend immediately.

After a lot of digging and saving command output of interest at 18:33 I
did:

sudo kill $(pidof systemd-sleep)

the system immediately suspended. After nearly a minute I pressed the
power button and the PC instantly resumed.

dmesg reported "Suspended for 43 seconds" which is correct and network-
manager correctly returned to connected state.

I've only looked at Firefox's dependencies so far but of them all this
is the only project updated in the past 2-3 days which supplies:

[Bug 1589394] [NEW] "debug" kernel parameter causes Denial of Service

2016-06-06 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

15.10/16.04 amd64

With the Linux kernel's "debug" parameter set systemd spams the logs to
such a degree that boot fails with the plymouth progress indicator
constantly cycling, only tty1 available, and no clear indication from
the last messages displayed on console as to why.

It's not even clear if the system has transitioned from initrd to rootfs
at this point and there's no way to interact. Certainly no log file
residues are found on subsequent non-debug boots which infers the hang
may be during initrd.

Leaving aside the unresolved bug of systemd adopting the Linux 'debug'
parameter, and thus being the direct cause of this, the complete failure
to boot as a result is a serious regression and a Denial of Service.
Needing to alter the Linux command-line to use "loglevel=7" is a
distasteful workaround.

A boot without "debug" using the same GRUB menuitem starts fine which
suggests the systemd debug-level logging is the direct cause.

[Bug 1491393] [NEW] 15.10: Long boot-time delays trying to find disconnected hot-plugged storage devices

2015-09-02 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Is there a way to prevent systemd from creating generator targets for
hot-plug disks?

Currently it is causing very long delays at boot-time - which are not
interruptible by the sys-admin - but I'm not sure at what point systemd
decided those hot-plug devices should be added to the boot-time tasks,
or how to safely delete them.

There are generator rules added at some stage but I cannot find
information on how to safely remove them, or how to prevent them being
created.

In this output the device-mapper names prefixed LUKS_HDD_ are the
problem:

$ ls -l /var/run/systemd/generator/*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 486 Sep  2 11:45 /var/run/systemd/generator/boot.mount

[Bug 1252516] [NEW] locale's time format is not used in clock applet's "locations"

2013-11-18 Thread tj
Public bug reported:

1) Set locale to "English (Denmark)" and set "Apply System-Wide" so that
24-hour time is used
System Settings > Language Support > Regional Formats > English (Denmark) >
Apply System-Wide

2) logout and then log back in

3) set locations to be shown in clock applet
gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime show-locations true; gsettings
set com.canonical.indicator.datetime locations "['America/Denver Denver']"

4) In clock applet, notice how "location times" (i.e., Denver) is
displayed in 24-hour time.

5) set a custom presentation in top-panel so day shows before month (e.g., "18
Nov" instead of "Nov 18")
gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime custom-time-format "%a %e %b
%R"; gsettings set com.canonical.indicator.datetime time-format custom

6) In clock applet, notice how "location times" (i.e., Denver) is now
displayed in 12-hour time without A.M/P.M., and the time displayed in
the top-panel (and locale) is 24-hour time.

[Bug 1235162] Re: Persistent net names via /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules fail

2013-10-05 Thread TJ
This is confirmed as a systemd-udev regression.

Code that previously existed in rename_netif() to support a temporary
interface name ("rename%u") has been removed. As a result, the '70
-persistent-net.rules' actions that try to shuffle existing names will
now fail.

systemd commit log:

commit 97595710b77aa162ca5e20da57d0a1ed7355eaad

[Bug 979959] Re: "gnome-control-center display" crashes if no RANDR extension

2012-08-15 Thread TJ
libgnome-desktop/gnome-rr.c::gnome_rr_screen_new() says:

 * Returns: a unique #GnomeRRScreen instance, specific to the @screen, or NULL
 * if this could not be created, for instance if the driver does not support
 * Xrandr 1.2.  Each #GdkScreen thus has a single instance of #GnomeRRScreen.

therefore in gnome-control-center panels/display/cc-diaply-
panel.c::cc_display_panel_constructor() the following code is incorrect:

  self->priv->screen = gnome_rr_screen_new (gdk_screen_get_default (), &error);
  g_signal_connect (self->priv->screen, "changed", G_CALLBACK
(on_screen_changed), self);
  if (!self->priv->screen)
{
  error_message (NULL, _("Could not get screen information"),
error->message);
  g_error_free (error);

if the call to gnome_rr_screen_new() returns NULL, as it will if no
RANDR is available, the subsequent setup of the signal:

g_signal_connect (self->priv->screen, "changed", G_CALLBACK
(on_screen_changed), self);

is done with self->priv->screen == NULL

So when that signal fires it passes a NULL screen pointer to
on_screen_changed(). Passing the NULL pointer doesn't matter since it
isn't used in the call-back, but self->priv->screen is used:

on_screen_changed (GnomeRRScreen *scr,
   gpointer data)
{
  GnomeRRConfig *current;
  CcDisplayPanel *self = data;

  current = gnome_rr_config_new_current (self->priv->screen, NULL);
  gnome_rr_config_ensure_primary (current);

So current will be NULL after calling gnome_rr_config_new_current()

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: "PageSize=Custom.Custom.x"

2012-07-27 Thread TJ
I created a fix and tested it successfully:

Breakpoint 2, add_cups_options (key=0x7fe101636ca0 "cups-PageSize",
value=0x7fe101636c80 "Custom.595.28x841.89",
user_data=0x7fe1014c6970) at
/home/all/SourceCode/gtk/gtk+3.0-3.4.2/./modules/printbackends/cups/gtkprintbackendcups.c:521
521 {
(gdb) c
Continuing.

Breakpoint 3, add_cups_options (key=0x7fe101636ca5 "PageSize", value=, user_data=)
at
/home/all/SourceCode/gtk/gtk+3.0-3.4.2/./modules/printbackends/cups/gtkprintbackendcups.c:566
566   if (custom_value && !g_str_has_prefix(value, "Custom."))
(gdb) n
573 gtk_cups_request_encode_option (request, key, value);
(gdb) c
Continuing.

The fix simply checks whether the value already has the "Custom." prefix
and if so, doesn't insert it again. In the code above the test
!g_str_has_prefix(value, "Custom.") fails and processing goes through
the 'else' clause on line 573.

- /* Add "Custom." prefix to custom values. */
-  if (custom_value)
+ /* Add "Custom." prefix to custom values (if they don't already have the
prefix). */
+  if (custom_value && !g_str_has_prefix(value, "Custom."))

A debdiff (for Precise) is attached.

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: "PageSize=Custom.Custom.x"

2012-07-27 Thread TJ
In modules/printbackends/cups/gtkprintbackendcups.c:

 static void
 add_cups_options (const gchar *key,
  const gchar *value,
  gpointer user_data)
 {
 ...
   /* Add "Custom." prefix to custom values. */
   if (custom_value)
{
  new_value = g_strdup_printf ("Custom.%s", value);
  gtk_cups_request_encode_option (request, key, new_value);
  g_free (new_value);
}
   else
gtk_cups_request_encode_option (request, key, value);
 }

This is called from:

 static void gtk_print_backend_cups_print_stream (...) {
 ...
  gtk_print_settings_foreach (settings, add_cups_options, options_data);
 ...
 }

which is called via the ops pointer print_stream:

 backend_class->print_stream = gtk_print_backend_cups_print_stream;

The "Custom." code was added:

commit 8170436e61ea68c713d75ad374d22c3261be9203
Author: Benjamin Berg
Date:   Sat Dec 24 17:26:32 2011 +0100

Set cups Custom print options correctly (bug #543520, patch by Marek Kašík)

This patch fixes the cups print backend to pass Custom options with
the "Custom." prefix to cups if neccessary.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=543520

In comment nos. 25 and 27 of that report Benjamin Berg describes this
"Custom." prefix problem and a patch to remove it when the GTK+ print
dialog. Commit 8170436e61ea68 was found to cause a crash in Thunderbird
and Inkscape, and was subsequently revised by commit 9afe13bf91.

commit 9afe13bf91d8e80c4def7d3944d56542ce13733f
Author: Marek Kasik
Date:   Tue Jan 31 12:15:43 2012 +0100

printing: Don't crash when printing

This commit fixes crash which occurs in Firefox, Thunderbird and Inkscape
during printing. This crash was caused because of wrong handling of Custom
CUPS options. (#543520)

These commits are included in Ubuntu's 3.4.2 release.

My suspicion is that this code in create_pickone_option () {
...
  if (option->type != GTK_PRINTER_OPTION_TYPE_PICKONE)
{
  if (g_str_has_prefix (ppd_option->defchoice, "Custom."))
gtk_printer_option_set (option, ppd_option->defchoice + 7);
  else
gtk_printer_option_set (option, ppd_option->defchoice);
}
  else
...
}

isn't being executed in some circumstances, leading to the "Custom."
prefix received from CUPS then being further prefixed by
add_cups_options() when the ->print_stream op is called.

[Bug 1029912] [NEW] Evince ignores custom page size margins

2012-07-27 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Affects 12.04 Precise. This appears identical to bug #348202 "Impossible
to print to custom page size in Evince".

Evince doesn't respect a custom paper size with a reduced margin ( for
printing on pre-printed paper).

Using a HP Deskjet 995C A4 ink-jet printer with duplexer which contains
pre-printed A4 paper stock. This paper has a printed border down the
left side. Avoiding it requires the page to use a 40mm left margin.

I need a custom paper size based on the A4 210x297mm size with margins
12.7, 12.7, 40.0, 3.2 mm.

In Evince I did:

File > Print... > General > Printer = DESKJET-995C
 > Page Setup > Paper size > Manage Custom Sizes... >
  Margins from Printer... > DESKJET-995C
  Paper Margins: Left = 40.0
  Name = Sunshine Border
  > Close
 > Paper size = Sunshine Border
 >Print

The result is as if printing to the standard A4 paper-size. The left
margin is not honoured.

I found that Gedit does honour the margin. For more information see also
my comment no. 60 on a related high-priority bug #998156 "GTK Print
dialog sends broken custom page size attribute:
"PageSize=Custom.Custom.x""

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: "PageSize=Custom.Custom.x"

2012-07-27 Thread TJ
This also affects Evince and Gedit.

I discovered the bug whilst trying to print using Evince to a custom page size
(A4 but with a 40mm left border) which I called "Sunshine Border".
Both preview and printing either fail or sometimes print using default A4
margins. I was trying to track down the cause for that inconsistency and
followed a bug-trail to this report.

I compared Evince against Gedit. After selecting the custom size in the Print
dialog (in my case "Sunshine Border) I found Gedit's preview will show the
40mm border, but printing fails...
... UNLESS I have previously used the CUPS printer administration to set the
default page-size to 'Custom' and entered the 210x297 millimetre values.

http://localhost:631/admin/

> Printers > DESKJET-995C > Administration > Set Default Options... >
Media Size = "Custom", Width=210, Height=297, Units=Millimeters > Set
Default Options.

I noticed in CUPS error_log that PageSize wasn't 0x0 for me (only get
that when selecting "Custom" when the size hasn't been configured in
CUPS administrator):

PageSize=Custom.Custom.595.28x841.89

At first I thought this was in millimeters and is wrong, but then
realised the units are points (1 PostScript point = 0.35278
millimetres).

So, in summary:

Gedit: Can print using custom paper size as long as CUPS default custom size is
also configured, and custom margins are honoured.
Evince: Can print using custom paper size as long as CUPS default custom size
is also configured, but custom margins are ignored.

[Bug 995185] Re: Multimedia keys are disabled

2012-05-25 Thread TJ
Sary. If Ubuntu is not supporting the standard features of the PC then
it is a bug. We know that the Linux kernel is passing the key-codes so
now its my job to figure out what the fix is and which package that
applies to.

If I need to change the package this bug is assigned to I will do that.
For now you need do nothing except respond to any requests I might make
to test possible solutions or to do further diagnostics.

[Bug 995185] Re: Multimedia keys are disabled

2012-05-24 Thread TJ
Hi Sary, thanks for the prompt response.

The first thing I notice is the kernel version you just used is
different to the original dmesg:

Original:

[0.00] Linux version 3.2.0-23-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version
4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu4) ) #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC
2012 (Ubuntu 3.2.0-23.36-generic 3.2.14)
[0.00] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic
root=UUID=daeaa295-5990-4302-a175-fe2559526049 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7

Now:

[0.00] Linux version 3.0.0-19-generic (buildd@vernadsky) (gcc version
4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) ) #33-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 19 19:05:57 UTC
2012 (Ubuntu 3.0.0-19.33-generic 3.0.27)
[0.00] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-19-generic
root=UUID=710b9731-f503-4f39-8891-b8292e060a73 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7

This looks to be a two different installations. The original one was
using 12.04 Precise, this later one looks to be using 11.10 Oneiric. Is
the PC set up for multiple boots into different releases?

Second thought regarding dmesg. dmesg used to only capture the initial
boot messages which were switched to /var/log/kern.log once the system
got going. That has changed with 12.04 so that might explain why - if
you're using 11.10 Oneiric now - you don't see the key-scan codes
reported in dmesg.

To find all occurrences try this:

grep -n 'setkeycodes' /var/log/*

You may need to prefix that command with 'sudo' if some files aren't
accessible to your user account.

2012-05-23 Thread TJ
Could you do a test and document the results?

Boot the laptop from a cold start and then press and release each of the
media keys in turn. Write down the keys and the order you press them in.

Then attach the /var/log/dmesg file along with the ordered list of keys
you pressed.

This will allow me to correlate the key-scan codes with the keys you
pressed and compare against the engineering manual for the M100.

[Bug 995185] Re: Multimedia keys are disabled

2012-05-23 Thread TJ
Mohammed, sorry I took so long to move on this after our discussion on
IRC. My earlier research on your behalf indicates this is a regression
since earlier releases of Ubuntu have supported the multimedia keys on
the Satellite M-100.

I'm assigning this issue to myself and will log my findings about what
support should be there, which version added it and if there is any
reason for the regression.

Scenario:

Attempting to use Andromote remote control from an Android 'phone to
start playing a track. Andromote successfully discovered Rhythmbox,
displayed the tracks for selection, and added tracks to the playlist.
When pressing play Andromote acted as if the track is playing but
nothing happens on Rhythmbox due to this exception.

[Bug 563862] Re: When logging on power manager fails

2010-04-25 Thread tj
I'm seeing exactly the behaviour - installed 10.04-amd64 - Beta1 3/28
and have upgraded through rather than reinstall. As far as I can recall,
the problem has been there since Beta1.

This is a desktop, so AC-powered. I can provide any information
required.

[Bug 546197] Re: Truncated "/path/containing spaces" error log entry prevents diagnosis of problem

2010-03-25 Thread TJ
I ran the genisoimage command manually and captured the stderr output to
a log file. This reveals that Brasero is truncating the error captured
from STDERR in its own log file, seemingly when the path contained in
the error report includes spaces.

Brasero reported:

BraseroGenisoimage stderr: /usr/bin/genisoimage: No such file or
directory. Non-existent or inaccessible: /mnt/hfs/Read

genisoimage actually reports:

/usr/bin/genisoimage: No such file or directory. Non-existent or
inaccessible: /mnt/hfs/Read Before You
Install.app/Contents/Resources/ko.lproj/설치 전에 읽어보기.pdf

This revealed that the target file in the loop-mounted hfsplus file-
system is problematic.

[Bug 546692] [NEW] Ambiguous file name in warning dialog when adding files

2010-03-25 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

 apt-cache policy brasero
brasero:
  Installed: 2.29.91-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.29.91-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.29.91-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm working with an Apple Mac OSX 10.4 installation CD image. It began
as a .dmg and was converted to .img using dmg2img as per the Ubuntu help
wiki instructions. The .img hfsplus file-system is loop-mounted at
/mnt/hfs/.

When adding all files under /mnt/hfs/ to a new data project Brasero
shows a modal dialog box saying:

 Do you really want to add "English.lproj" to the selection?

 The children of this directory will have 7 parent directories.
 Brasero can create an image of such a file hierarchy and
 burn it; but the disc may not be readable on all operating
 systems.
 Note: Such a file hierarchy is known to work on Linux.

The problem here is that "English.lproj" exists in lots of sub-
directories within the directory-tree being added to the project.
Checking with 'find' shows 210 occurrences:

find /mnt/hfs -name 'English.lproj' 2>/dev/null | wc -l
210

The dialog should give the full path to the file as an additional
element in the dialog, so as not to make the headline title harder to
read, but still ensuring the user knows the exact file being reported.

[Bug 546197] [NEW] Fails to create images where content directory names contain spaces

2010-03-24 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Attempting to create an ISO image for a Mac OSX 10.4 installation CD,
Brasero fails every time with:

BraseroGenisoimage stderr: /usr/bin/genisoimage: No such file or
directory. Non-existent or inaccessible: /mnt/hfs/Read

In this case "Read" is the first word of a directory named "Read Before
You Install.app"

The original media is Apple .dmg files that have been converted to HFS
images using dmg2img (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManageDiscImages#DMG%20Images) and
then loop-mounted on the file-system at /mnt/hfs/.

The contents of /mnt/hfs/ (including hidden files) is then added to the
Brasero project and the burn to ISO image action initiated.

[Bug 326892] Re: panel 'hide' buttons only cause panel to 'move' onto secondary monitors

2010-03-24 Thread TJ
I've just discovered this bug with Lucid using dual monitors (laptop
internal LVDS 1280x800 and external DVI-D 1280x1024) using 'twin-view
(not separate X screens).

When (in this case) the lower panel properties are set to "Show Hide
buttons" the result of clicking the buttons is not to hide the panel but
simply to *move* it off the current screen.

Here, the external monitor is to the left of the laptop. When the
panel's left 'hide' button is pressed the panel 'slides' to the left and
cuts across the external display Because the external monitor has a
greater vertical pixel-count and the tops of the monitors are aligned,
the 'moved' panel cuts across the lower third of the second screen, and
remains 'on-top' of all other windows.

I'm attaching a photo which makes it obvious why this isn't a trivial
bug.

[Bug 532815] Re: [Lucid] acpid.socket not ready when xserver starts

[Bug 150702] Re: alt shift tab stopped navigating windows

2010-01-25 Thread TJ
>From a clean install of Ubuntu Karmic (x86_64) (rather than in-place
upgrade from Jaunty), and mounting the existing /home/ volume into it
(so the user settings are all inherited) I've checked and this bug isn't
affecting this PC.

The only difference I can see with regard to Compiz settings is I have
custom settings (not 'Normal' or 'Extra'' visual effects) because I have
the 3D cube configured on two X screens.

It looks as if the problem is in the source package generation and the
patch itself.

The patch to fix this is "debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch"
which patches "src/metacity.schemas.in" which is generated by automake
(from "src/metacity.schemas.in.in"). These lead to 'make' creating
"src/metacity.schemas".

However, when the package is built 'make' regenerates
"src/metacity.schemas.in" thus wiping out the changes made by the patch:

--
$ fakeroot debian/rules build
...
Trying patch debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch at level 1 ... success.
...
Generating keybinding schemas... ./metacity.schemas.in.in
./schema_bindings ./metacity.schemas.in.in ./metacity.schemas.in
LC_ALL=C /usr/bin/intltool-merge -s -u -c ../po/.intltool-merge-cache ../po
metacity.schemas.in metacity.schemas
Generating and caching the translation database
Merging translations into metacity.schemas.
...
--

This is obvious if you try to do a package clean:

--
$ fakeroot debian/rules clean
...
Trying reverse patch debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch at level 1 ...
0 ... 2 ... failure.
make: *** [reverse-patches] Error 1
--

So the obvious fix would be for the patch to be applied to
"src/metacity.schemas.in.in".

However, looking at the contents of the patch it isn't clear to me *why*
that should work since it affects the
"/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/move_to_workspace_12" key, not
"/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/switch_windows_backward".

Also, the patch is described as a fix for this bug in comment #15 and a
changelog entry is shown there which is in the Hardy package changelog;
however that entry *does not* appear in the current source package's
changelog (or any since Hardy), instead the patch itself is referenced
but no specific mention of this bug reference:

--
metacity (1:2.23.21-0ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low
...
  * debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch:
Fix default keybinding for shift-alt-tab

 -- Pedro Fragoso   Tue, 03 Jun 2008 18:36:06 +0100
--

Inspecting the contents of the patches for Hardy (created my Michael)
and the patch that is in Intrepid and later (from Pedro's changelog
report) the difference is obvious - they are being applied to different
key-bindings:

--
$ diff -Nu metacity-2.22.0/debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch
metacity-2.28.0/debian/patches/012_default_keybinding.patch
...
+@@ -1348,7 +1348,7 @@
+
/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/move_to_workspace_12
metacity
string
 -  disabled
 +  Tab

- Move focus backwards between windows using popup
display
-
+ Move window to workspace 12
+ The format looks like "a" or
"F1".
--

So the issue seems to be twofold:

1. The patches are inconsistent, conflicting, or accidentally misformed during
a source package refresh
2. The patch should apply to "metacity.schemas.in.in" if the package-build is
going to cause "metacity.schemas.in" to be regenerated after source package
patching has been applied.

[Bug 481529] [NEW] Streaming radio station won't resume after stopping playback via systray right-click

2009-11-12 Thread TJ Cannon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1) Ubuntu 9.10
2) Rhythmbox 0.12.5-0ubuntu5
3) I expect that when I right-click the rhythmbox icon in the systray and check
"Play" it will resume streaming media.
4) The checkbox fills, but nothing else happens upon clicking "Play"

I tested multiple stations, and it seems to work if the rhythmbox window
is open. My issue is when I right-click and uncheck play in the morning
before work, then come home and right-click and check play. I have to
left-click to open the player, then double-click the name of the
station.

[Bug 346964] Re: menu items selected from screen 1 open on screen 0

2009-10-10 Thread TJ
I've repackaged my previous Jaunty libglibc package to use yakovlev's
patch since it seems to perform better than my original upstream-
backport patch (which came from grossly refactored code).

In particular, yakolev's patch doesn't cause the launching of external
applications to fail (e.g. double-click of a .deb inside a .tar.gz in
file-roller, or a downloaded file on Chromium-browser) as the previous
patch did.

Add my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~intuitivenipple/+archive/ppa) and
then update the "libglib2.0-0" packages.

sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-0

If you previously used my PPA build you'll need to remove all the
packages it installed and replace them. The version of the current
Ubuntu update is less than the version I used with that package so
you'll need to explicitly specify the version:

sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-0=2.20.1-0ubuntu2.2~tj~ppa1j
libglib2.0-data=2.20.1-0ubuntu2.2~tj~ppa1j

[Bug 362880] Re: gnome-terminal opens new tab in 'pwd' of process in existing tab

2009-08-28 Thread TJ
I've modified the title of the bug to more accurately reflect what is
going on.

With the first tab running a process that is changing the "present
working directory" (PWD) as it goes:

cd ~
pwd
/home/tj
find /usr/share -iname 'openshot*'

Opening a new tab whilst 'find' is still running ends up with a PWD in
the /usr/share/ tree:

pwd
/usr/share/anjuta/project/terminal/src

** Summary changed:

- gnome-terminal opens tabs with wrong working directory when using man
+ gnome-terminal opens new tab in 'pwd' of process in existing tab

[Bug 390985] [NEW] 16_compiz_workspace_switcher.patch assumes single screen

2009-06-22 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This patch assumes a single-head, not multi-head monitor configuration
and uses a hard-coded 'screen0' value.

In some circumstances where the Compiz hsize &vsize settings on screen0
and screen1 are different this will cause unexpected and unwanted
behaviour on screen .

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

2009-06-22 Thread TJ
I believe I've managed to identify the issue here. It is dependent on my
having correctly navigated the register variable identification. Gdb is
supposed to report which register the variable is stored in using "info
address dpy" but this reports "Symbol "dpy" is a variable with multiple
locations" - not exactly helpful.

I then looked at all the registers (info registers) and saw that rbx and
rdi contained the same value. I took a leap of faith and assumed this
was the dpy pointer. Examining the structure there the values seem to
make sense in the context of a Display pointer (which is a typedef of
the true  _XDisplay).

The breakpoint was triggered after trying to open a program via a custom
launcher on screen 1 (DISPLAY=:0.1).

In XDefineCursor(Display dpy, Window w, Cursor c) the values in the dpy
structure show:

(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->proto_major_version
$14 = 11
(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->proto_minor_version
$15 = 0
(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->vendor
$16 = 0x204cbc0 "The X.Org Foundation"

(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->nscreens
$11 = 2
(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->display_name
$12 = 0x2032c50 ":0.0"
(gdb) print ((Display *)$rbx)->default_screen
$13 = 0

Notice that "display_name" is ":0.0" when it should be ":0.1".

This suggests that the GDK_WINDOW_XDISPLAY and subsidiary macros in the
GTK package are not delivering the correct result.

Because the issue is limited to custom launchers on display :0.1 it
looks likely the problem is higher up the call stack; most likely in
gnome-panel itself.

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

2009-06-21 Thread TJ
Looking at the libx11-dev package source code I see that the 'Display'
value is optimized out into a register variable, which is a pain since
that is likely key to the bug and doesn't show up in gdb output.

libx11/src/DefCursor.c:

int
XDefineCursor (
register Display *dpy,
Window w,
Cursor cursor)
{

This function is called from
gtk+2.0-2.16.1/gdk/x11/gdkwindow-x11.c::gdk_window_x11_set_cursor()

  if (!GDK_WINDOW_DESTROYED (window))
{
  XDefineCursor (GDK_WINDOW_XDISPLAY (window),
 GDK_WINDOW_XID (window),
 xcursor);

  if (cursor)
impl->cursor = gdk_cursor_ref (cursor);
}

Which comes from:

#define GDK_WINDOW_XDISPLAY(win)  (GDK_SCREEN_X11 (GDK_WINDOW_SCREEN
(win))->xdisplay)

#define GDK_SCREEN_X11(object)   (G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE_CAST
((object), GDK_TYPE_SCREEN_X11, GdkScreenX11))

#define GDK_WINDOW_SCREEN(win)(GDK_DRAWABLE_IMPL_X11
(((GdkWindowObject)
win)->impl)->screen)

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

I neglected to install the libgtk ebug symbols for the previous back-

Looking at gdk_window_new() its parameters break down as:

(gdb) print parent
$18 = (GdkWindow *) 0x11c3000

Not clear what this indicates, but:

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

2009-06-21 Thread TJ
Having just patched glib to fix bug #290935 "dual screen all panels end
up on one screen at startup" I'm using dual screens again and hit this
bug whilst using compiz cube and nvidia drivers.

Metacity  "/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager" = false.

Running gnome-panel from within gdb shows the following stack-trace when
gnome-panel crashes after clicking on a custom launcher on the gnome-
panel on screen 1. This doesn't crash using the 'standard' menu items on
screen 1. (Screen 1 is the *second* screen).

The problem seems to originate from:

#21 0x7f50f90ed5b2 in gdk_window_new () from /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
...
#27 0x7f50f95a0516 in gtk_widget_realize () from

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.

   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 361698] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in op_copy()

2009-04-16 Thread TJ
Examining the issue some more I'm of the view that there is another bug
here, in Evolution. That bug is that when I've configured Preferences >
Composer Preferences > Format messages in HTML to be disabled, and
Reply-style "Quoted", the Reply-to-sender composer should *only* quote
the text/plain multipart-MIME section of the original.

In this case the presence of the hidden HTML DIVs (revealed by the mouse
clicked in the quoted area) and the use of libgtkhtml shows this is not
the case.

[Bug 361698] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in op_copy()

2009-04-16 Thread TJ
Unfortunately I can't attach an example email since the ones I know of
that cause the issue all contain private information - they are however
the standard template emails that ebay sends out to a winning bidder.

I've confirmed it is likely the ebay template that triggers the bug
since I can crash Evolution by following the same procedure with any of
the winning-bidder emails that use that same template. The subject lines
all start "Good news. eBay item # item title"

I'll see if I can deduce a test email that will trigger the bug, but
can't promise to be successful.

Hi Sebastien.

I wasn't attempting to fix the fundamental issue, just to modify the
upstream default enough to avoid users seeing error messages for
log-files that are never going to be found on Ubuntu systems.

I agree with your implication that the design adopted upstream that
causes this feels flawed, but I think that is something that should be
dealt with by upstream since it looks like it'll need significant
changes.

[Bug 318689] Re: gnome-system-log attempts to open bogus/inexistent logfiles

2009-02-19 Thread TJ
Thanks for pointing that out Steve. I moved an existing /home/ mount
into the Jaunty environment. Now you've jogged my memory I think I do
recall that with the default Jaunty user profile I saw a bunch of log-
file warnings too. Now I only see one for /var/log/acpid.

The reason for it is that on package gnome-utils the gnome-log-viewer
code has the defaults hard-coded in. logview/logview-prefs.c:

static char *default_logfiles[] = {
  "/var/log/sys.log",
#ifndef ON_SUN_OS
  "/var/log/messages",
  "/var/log/secure",
  "/var/log/maillog",
  "/var/log/cron",
  "/var/log/Xorg.0.log",
  "/var/log/XFree86.0.log",
  "/var/log/auth.log",
  "/var/log/cups/error_log",
#else

so what we need is a simple patch to alter the defaults

2009-02-04 Thread TJ
This is (was) affecting apport when it tries to open a bug-report URL.
The current Jaunty alpha 3 release will suffer this (as well as bug

do:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

This ensures the fixes are applied before doing any testing that might

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-12-20 Thread TJ
*Definitely* an ubuntuforums bug!

As I reported in comment #11 on 2008-09-09, and in email to the server
admins, and via IRC, the server *incorrectly* reports the mime-type for
text documents as "plain/text" - the correct mime-type for text files is
"text/plain":

HTTP/1.x 200 OK

Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2008 21:49:06 GMT

Server: Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.4-2ubuntu5.4 with Suhosin-Patch

X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.4-2ubuntu5.4

content-disposition: attachment; filename*=ISO-8859-1''test3nospace.txt

Content-Length: 9

X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff

X-Permitted-Cross-Domain-Policies: none

Content-Type: plain/text

Also in comment #11 I reported on the allowed attachment types that result in
an unknown/unknown mime-type when the server should really be helpful and give
the correct mime-types.

[Bug 247480] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in e_cal_menu_target_new_select()

2008-10-04 Thread TJ
SRU Justification:

Impact: When using Evolution Tasks list and editing tasks Evolution will
crash immediately the task is saved.

Testcase:

It is reproducable when there are a number of open and completed tasks
in the task view, sorted by "%complete" (lowest to highest). There are
other scenarios too (see LP bug #267933).

Select the Tasks window, .
1. Add a new task (which appears at the top of the list).
2. Double-click the new task to edit it.
3. Do Options > Status Details and change values including "Percent complete".
4. When pressing the Close button Evolution segfaults.

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-16 Thread TJ
commit d14a61e1d07dcc0c8015114b13609104b0688502
Author: TJ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date:   Wed Sep 17 01:29:10 2008 +0100

When an incorrect or unrecognised Content-Type is found, and GetFromType()
fails,
GetFromExtension() is used to get the mime-type from the extension. When
the download
completes the helper fails to launch since it is re-evaluated using the
(unrecognised)
mime-type but no fall-back on the extension is done.

This fix makes another call to GetFromType() after GetFromExtension() to
determine the
helper application and configure the mimeInfo object correctly (closes LP
#239952 and
Mozilla bug # 455626).

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-10 Thread TJ
Results of testing Mozilla bug #40 patch (v3).

.txt file
Content-Type: plain/text

Helper chooser dialog suggests to open with "gedit.desktop". However, if
"Other..." is selected from the list, and the file-browser dialog cancelled,
Open With displays "Text Editor (default)".

If the "OK" button is pressed when "gedit-desktop" is displayed no error
is reported but no helper is launched. If the "OK" button is pressed
when "Text Editor (default)" is displayed, the "Download Error" dialog
appears and reports that the helper application can't be launched - in
other words, the same problem as reported by this bug originally.

.gz file
Content-Type: unknown/unknown

Helper choose dialig suggests to open "firefox 3.0.1". However, if
"Other..." is selected from the list, and the file-browser dialog
cancelled, Open with displays "Archive Manager (default)".

If the "OK" button is pressed when either "firefox 3.0.1" or "Archive
Manager (default)" is displayed the "Download Error" dialog appears and
reports that the helper application can't be launched.

.pdf
Content-Type: application/pdf

Helper chooser dialog suggests to open "Document Viewer (default)".
Pressing the "OK" button launches the helper application (evince) as
expected.

So, in summary, the mozilla patch doesn't solve the issue and, if
anything, makes it more confusing.

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-09 Thread TJ
The explanation for the apparent forgetfulness of xulrunner is that
there are two separate phases to the download process:

1. Populate the Helper Chooser Dialog list with mime-type helper applications
2. Launch with default mime-type helper

The solution would be to add functionality to
nsMIMEInfoUnix::LaunchDefaultWithFile() that does the same thing as step
1 follows in determining the default helper.

However, Aexander has pointed me to a patch that may rework this process
so the next step is to see if the patch has any positive effect on this
default-handling in the absense of a sensible Content-Type from the web-
server.

Here's the recent debug log showing the two phases.

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-09 Thread TJ
The second issue is that internal debugging shows xulrunner makes a
second attempt to get the mime-type from gnome-vfs when the first
(obviously based on the web-server Content-Type) fails. The second
attempt appears to be based on the file's extension (I shall trace that
aspect in my next debug session).

The problem is, having got the correct handler from gnome-vfs xulrunner
seems to forget/lose it and not use it later when it actually wants to
launch the handler.

Here's the report for a .gzip file. The web-server (ubuntuforums.org)
mis-reports the Content-Type as:
content-disposition: attachment;
filename*=ISO-8859-1''test4%20with%20space.txt.gz
Content-Type: unknown/unknown

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-09 Thread TJ
This is a combination of two 'bugs'. I'll address the first in this
comment.

1. ubuntuforums.com web-server is misconfigured.

2. xulrunner correctly figuring out the mime-type from the file-
extension but fails to set the variable that tells it which application
to launch, therefore failing when it checks if mDefaultApplication is
valid (not-null).

Web-server Content-Types response for attachments. For the following
file attachments it reports the wrong mime-types. For text, the elements
are reversed!:

.txt == text/plain
content-disposition: attachment; filename*=ISO-8859-1''test4%20with%20space.txt

Content-Type: plain/text

.odt == application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text
content-disposition: attachment; filename*=ISO-8859-1''test1.odt

Content-Type: unknown/unknown

.ods == application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet
content-disposition: attachment; filename*=ISO-8859-1''test2.ods

Content-Type: unknown/unknown

.gz == application/x-gzip
content-disposition: attachment;
filename*=ISO-8859-1''test4%20with%20space.txt.gz

Content-Type: unknown/unknown

PDF is correct though:

.pdf == "application/pdf
content-disposition: attachment; filename*=ISO-8859-1''test5.pdf

Content-Type: application/pdf

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-09 Thread TJ
No. I'm working on isolating the problem. It is caused by an interaction
but the issue is likely to be in xulrunner. I should have the solution
and a fix later today.

[Bug 239952] Re: firefox - the associated helper application does not exist

2008-09-08 Thread TJ
This is a problem caused by the interaction of xulrunner and Gnome VFS.
Using the test files in Savvas' thread in the forums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5369513) a *successful*
handling of the PDF file looks like this:

nsMIMEInfoUnix::GetHasDefaultHandler()
Using vfs
return NS_OK

nsMIMEInfoUnix::GetHasDefaultHandler()
Using vfs
return NS_OK

nsMIMEInfoBase::LaunchWithFile()
mPreferredAction=4
mPreferredAction==useSystemDefault
calling LaunchDefaultWithFile()

nsMIMEInfoUnix::LaunchDefaultWithFile()
nativePath=/tmp/test5-5.pdf
Using vfs
vfs->GetAppForMimeType()=1
app->Launch()

Whereas trying either of the text files (with or without spaces in
names) gives this:

nsMIMEInfoUnix::GetHasDefaultHandler()
Using vfs
fallback to nsMIMEInfoImpl::GetHasDefaultHandler()

nsMIMEInfoBase::LaunchWithFile()
mPreferredAction=4
mPreferredAction==useSystemDefault
calling LaunchDefaultWithFile()

nsMIMEInfoUnix::LaunchDefaultWithFile()
nativePath=/tmp/test4 with space-4.txt
Using vfs
vfs->GetAppForMimeType()=1
mDefaultApplication=0
!mDefaultApplication NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

... and...

nsMIMEInfoUnix::GetHasDefaultHandler()
Using vfs
fallback to nsMIMEInfoImpl::GetHasDefaultHandler()

nsMIMEInfoBase::LaunchWithFile()
mPreferredAction=4
mPreferredAction==useSystemDefault
calling LaunchDefaultWithFile()

nsMIMEInfoUnix::LaunchDefaultWithFile()
nativePath=/tmp/test3nospace-1.txt
Using vfs
vfs->GetAppForMimeType()=1
mDefaultApplication=0
!mDefaultApplication NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
