[Bug 1714933] [NEW] Xenial: Please roll SRU with upstream fix for networkd to "accept colons in network interface names"

2017-09-04 Thread Tobias Wolf
Public bug reported:

PR: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/5117

issue: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4057

Before the networkd from 231 was backported, it was possible to use
interface alias names that contained a colon, e.g. eth0:1. This is
commonly used to make legacy tools like "ifconfig" work, because they
*expect* a colon in the interface name.

Martin told me to file a bug for this.

Merging networkd from 231 lead to a regression where valid configs were
not accepted anymore after the backport. Please merge that fix for the
regression.

[Bug 1053658] [NEW] Automatic Contacts feature went missing (via bbdb e-plugin)

2012-09-20 Thread Tobias Wolf
Public bug reported:

If I understand correctly, the Automatic Contacts feature in the Mail
Preferences of evolution is tied to and included with the bbdb plugin.

For some reason this plugin is not shipped anymore even though the build
log shows it being compiled. Why is it not included?

[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2012-07-19 Thread Tobias Wolf
Thanks, I think there is going to be a lng list of such options dropped
in 3.6, we need to think about it
but I think we should consider added nautilus-3.4 as a separate source for
users who want a featurefull filebrowser

The problem with that is that the changes in this cycle are *very* hit-
and-miss. Some things are cool, but some things are just baffling.

That because the Ubuntu fix was not the fix that upstream implemented.
The Ubuntu fix was a gsettings override, but upstream made a code
change.

Why is this invalid, Andrea? Different plugins can crash Gedit, that

You conclusion seems premature.

[Bug 438016] Re: Evolution is not pulling birthdays, or other items on the personal information tab from Google Contacts

So, we need libgdata 0.7 in Ubuntu now as per comment #5
[ at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630358#c5 ]

Though this is still waiting for libgdata 0.7, then there weren't as that many
API changes, thus I got eds ready for it, so when the eds will be compiled
against 0.7 or higher libgdata, then fields like birthday, home page url and
blog url will be available in UI and will be synced forth and back from the

The support was committed here:

But it didn’t go into 0.6.4, so we should upgrade?

[Bug 631980] Re: gnome-keyring doesn't unlock ssh key

2010-10-28 Thread Tobias Wolf
I made PPA and put version 2.32.1 of gnome-keyring in it: ppa:towolf/g-k-r-2.32
SSH unlocking works.

Apparently the reason for keeping the pre-release 2.31.91 was that the
delay for forgetting passphrase wasn’t carried over from Gconf. (But
it’s converted in 2.32.1 to GSettings AFAICT):

Not sure we will get 2.31.92 as there is no migration from gconf - gsetting.
 We will maybe keep 2.31.91.
 Built and tested here.

This will get fixed properly eventually:

[Bug 601818] Re: Add more font appearance GUI settings

2010-07-20 Thread Tobias Wolf
Tuning the LCD filter weights is possible since FreeType 2.4.0.

  - A new function `FT_Library_SetLcdFilterWeights' is available to
adjust the filter weights set by `FT_Library_SetLcdFilter'.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freetype/files/freetype2/2.4.0/NEWS/view

You can install freetype2-demos on maverick to try it out. It is not
obvious to me how to find the optimal set of weights. probably needs
carefully chosen presets.

But all the higher level libraries need to pass through the options too:
fontconfig, Xsettings, Cairo, etc.

[Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use

2010-06-28 Thread Tobias Wolf
I think Vish is right. Creating a new blank file and opening it with the
associated app is the same as just launching an app. That menu is not an
app launcher. The app launcher is elsewhere. Making this menu an app
launcher would introduce redundancy in UX.

This menu is made to hold user customized pre-filled templates, not
blank files. The Empty file entry is just meant as a baseline.

Re: [Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering

2010-03-24 Thread Tobias Wolf
Hello Anders, you just caught me being sloppy. I needed a method to
override the packaged versions and by trial and error it appeared that I
have to increment ubuntuX. I had been using this method for a while when
I figured I can save work for myself if skip incremental updates during
development period if I use ubuntuX+n.

Perhaps I should use a bit more care considering that these packages are
also consumed publicly.

On another note, you posted a patch in 2007 to the upstream bug report.
Can’t we do anything to close this upstream? I know upstream wants a
patch and sees no difference between LCD filter and no filtering anyhow.
But really.

And then there’s the issue that Carl Worth removed the LCD filtering API
from Cairo because some test suite images came out differently. In PDF
rendering we cannot follow the desktop settings because only slight
hinting and the across-pixel filter work properly on PDFs. We have to
have control over the font rendering settings.

Re: [Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering

2010-03-24 Thread Tobias Wolf
No; the correct versioning scheme for a PPA is described here:
 https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/BuildingASourcePackage#Versioning

Duly noted.

I know upstream wants a patch and sees no difference between LCD
filter and no filtering anyhow. But really.

It’s totally reasonable for them to want a patch, and there’s no reason
to believe that they “see no difference”.

Well, yes. And I received a stupefying reaction when I expressed
disbelief about this claim back then:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/poppler/2009-August/005008.html

And then there’s the issue that Carl Worth removed the LCD filtering API
from Cairo because some test suite images came out differently.

That was a long time ago in the 1.7 branch. Freetype LCD filtering has
never been in a stable release of Cairo; Ubuntu has been patching it in.

The removal of filtering API is something in addition to that (i.e.,
just using the filters that FreeType provides) and Ubuntu doesn’t patch
that back in now. What I think is needed to set the filter method on the
canvas is cairo_font_options_set_lcd_filter() and that was removed in
this commit:

commit 5d887ad5dca5af0f8216830d1b04d08a5aba9bee
Author: Carl Worth cwo...@cworth.org
Date: Thu Sep 25 13:31:20 2008 -0700

Remove all lcd_filter code.

We reverted the public API for setting lcd_filter font options
back in 1b42bc8033bc , but we had left the implementation which
would examine fontconfig and Xft properties for the option, and
which would call into freetype for subpixel glyph rasterization.

However, I recently realized, (and the test suite had been trying
to tell me for a while), that this approach would cause a
regression for users who were previously using sub-pixel text,
but without sub-pixel rendering built directly into freetype.
That's not acceptable, so all the code is coming out for now.

and:

API changes since 1.7.4
---
There have been a few changes of API that was new during the 1.7
series:

* Remove cairo_font_options_set_lcd_filter
   and cairo_font_options_get_lcd_filter

Motivation: At the Cairo Summit, this API was determined to be too
specific to the freetype font backend to be in the general
API. A similar API with a cairo_ft prefix might be introduced
in the future. Note that cairo will still respect the
corresponding fontconfig settings for these options.

In PDF rendering we cannot follow the desktop settings because
only slight hinting and the across-pixel filter work properly on
  PDFs.

Those are the default desktop settings these days on Ubuntu, right? But
anyway, why should PDFs need to be any different than the rest of the
 desktop?

Yes, but there are still many users who revert back to the old look and
the old filter (e.g.: http://goo.gl/tnvl )

In a PDF strong hinting and that intra-pixel filtering model don’t
really work. In PDF you have a scalable canvas and fractional advance
widths. In normal on-screen text you have integer advances, so pixel
snapping/quantization makes some sense. But there is a reason that
Poppler disables hinting completely. The reason is that you would get
very bad kerning if you would enable full hinting in a PDF.

The thing is, there are ways to improve upon unhinted fonts. Slight
hinting quantizes in y-direction only, which doesn’t affect kerning at
all. And LCD filtering can improve contrast without affecting the
advance widths of the glyphs.

This is why in PDF we should force some settings and not use the global
desktop settings.

Yes, I hope they will pick this up soon.

The test suite point is something I didn’t really agree with. If a
distribution wants to avoid the risk of patent infringement and disables
LCD filtering then it doesn’t matter if the code doing the filtering is
at a lower or higher level. The FreeType solution to higher level
libraries requesting LCD filtering then was to just render R=G=B, which
I agree is a lame way to handle it.

Yes, but there are still many users who revert back to the old look and
  the old filter (e.g.: http://goo.gl/tnvl )

People’s monitors, vision, and preferences differ; they always will. We
should respect that instead of forcing our preferences upon them.

Right, everything should remain configurable. But we need a method to
configure LCD filter on an app-by-app basis. Just asking FontConfig is
not enough, is my point.

Behdad E. agrees:

The reason is that you would get very bad kerning if you would enable
  full hinting in a PDF.

Hasn’t that been a solved problem for many years?
 http://fishsoup.net/articles/grid-fitting/

Theoretically yes. But not in practice. Not at all. It would look like
Fig.6. The worst part is that in a PDF you don’t get continuous runs of
text (viz. paragraphs) that the renderer is at liberty to layout itself.
You get chunks of glyphs that have precisely defined coordinates, and
unless to stick to »natural« metrics you will get bad looking text.

[Bug 301942] Re: Gedit ctrl-T does not open new tab

2010-03-02 Thread Tobias Wolf
Seriously people. I beg to differ. Ctrl-N has been use for »New...« in
all programs for ages.

Now Firefox came along and had Ctrl-N for »New Window«, so Ctrl-N was
taken and they made Ctrl-T »New Tab«. It turned out people want to open
new tabs more often and became trained on Ctrl-T for »New ...«. It’s
wrong, Firefox should have made Ctrl-N open a new tab.

Nowadays I even have to patch programs to move Ctrl-T back to Ctrl-N,
where it should be and you people want to mess things up further.

Just look at any software: Photoshop, Notepad, anything (but browsers).
Ctrl-N is »New ...«

This key will send the play/pause toggle over dbus. So, when the player is

And if two players are running with one paused and the other playing they will

I think corking should definitely be disabled until they sort it out.

[Bug 80921] Re: No subpixel rendering

2008-10-13 Thread Tobias Wolf
It seems that Poppler also disables hinting completely. I created test
packages in a special PPA that enable both slight hinting, which really
improves vertical text contrast, and the default LCD filter, which
improves horizontal contrast a great deal.

I had to revert the removal of the FreeType LCD filtering API in Cairo
1.7.6 so that Tom’s patch still works as intended. The PPA sources can
be found here:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~improved-lcd-filtering/+archive

The attachment shows one example of the effect of slight hinting and the
subpixel LCD filter.
Please test, you will see that in most cases it improves readability, but for
some (thin) fonts and zoom levels, there’s also color fringing.

I feel that unless these integration issues are clearly resolved the Private

I think that unless there is really good integration this feature should not be

1. Presentation: to much technical wording at the moment, too much
understanding of underlying mechanisms required
2. It's an irregular mount, unlike fstab or gvfs mounts. Not handled by
nautilus unmount mechanisms; the copy not move issue, etc
3. Suid root, and hence not configurable and no localization possible
4. Filenames are not encrypted. This is suboptimal for a secure file vault
feature.
5. Should be locked/unlocked in situ, i.e., directly in the view of the Private

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2008-04-03 Thread Tobias Wolf
The special rules in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf are
there because some developers were vehemently against making the change to the
new subpixel rendering.
The file is a compromise they accepted since they work mainly in terminals
anyway.

Not really a bug. It's intentional.

[Bug 159434] Re: Unable to set legacy subpixel rendering

2007-12-17 Thread Tobias Wolf
Hey, I uploaded a new devel Cairo with the corrected patch to my PPA.
Care to test it? I don't like the old style, of course, so I didn't.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/towolf/ubuntu gutsy main

But be aware that there's some other unstable stuff in my PPA. I suggest
to only enable the repo for installing libcairo2 and then removing the
source.

Note that I dodn't upload the fontconfig patch, so the old naming you
cited above should still be valid. I think.

[Bug 153441] Re: strange font configuration dialog behavior

2007-12-11 Thread Tobias Wolf
Not a bug for the dialog but for the Human theme (ubuntulooks). The
state of the four radio buttons is Inconsistent, but the theme doesn't
distinguish Active and Inconsistent. The meaning here is that since
in the details dialog you customized the advanced settings, none of the
presets apply, they're are not consistent with customization.

Adding ubuntulooks as related.
