I'm probably experiencing the same bug, although it happens right after

take minutes until gnome starts working. Really annoying.

The links to related gnome bugs don't work btw.

[Bug 1573408] Re: GNOME Software does not install third-party .deb packages

Update:

Looks like there was issue with dpkg database. Anyway this is a serious
bug in gnome software as no error message is given and no graphical way
to recover from the situation.

$ sudo apt install /tmp/mozilla_vranki0/code_1.26.1-153688_amd64.deb
[sudo] password for vranki:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to

2018-09-05 Thread Ville Ranki
I think this is back in up to date 18.04:

1. Download deb (visual studio code in this case)
2. Open the file (via Firefox)
3. Gnome software starts and shows the package, click Install
4. Sudo password is asked and it says Installing
5. Goto 3. The package is not installed and no errors given.

[Bug 1719576] [NEW] Gnome-screensaver process keeps running after it's uninstalled

2017-09-26 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Steps:

1. Run Gnome (see note)
2. apt remove gnome-screensaver
3. Let the screensaver lock the screen
4. Try unlocking

Screen unblanks but the screensaver does not prompt for password and
there is no easy way to resume working.

Note:
Really I ran Cinnamon with both cinnamon-screensaver and gnome-screensaver
running (they should block eachother!) causing two lock screens. I uninstalled
gnome-screensaver as guided somewhere, but the actual process wasn't killed.

Fix for the bug is that the prerm script should kill remaining gnome-
screensaver processes and/or gnome-screensaver should unlock if it
detects it has been removed and cannot operate anymore. This should be
tested well as it poses a security risk.

[Bug 1366840] Re: sftp freezes nautilus after standby / resume cycle

2017-05-18 Thread Ville Ranki
I dug some information on this.

First, the workaround is: killall gvfsd-sftp

The bug is very much related to these gnome bugs:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=559065
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563793

gvfs should be smart enough to unmount shares after a timeout if the
share can't be reached. This also could be done in Nautilus with more
user configurable parameters.

[Bug 1580635] [NEW] Nothing happens when trying to add online calendar

2016-05-11 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open gnome-calendar
2. Open calendar settings
3. Click on "Click to set up" on any of the online accounts.

Nothing happens. There is no error message or anything. The gear icon
next to "Online accounts" header also does nothing.

I killed the calendar and ran it from command line. Clicking on any of
these buttons outputs:

$ gnome-calendar

** (gnome-calendar:5108): WARNING **: Couldn't open settings: Failed to
execute child process "gnome-control-center" (No such file or directory)

Package gnome-control-center is not installed. If it's required for
calendar to work, it should be a dependency. At least there should be
warning dialog that explains this.

2016-01-20 Thread Ville Ranki
"Me too", with Ubuntu 15.10 and Jolla Sailfish (not Android!).
Workaround in comment #40 works, though you need to run /usr/lib/gvfs
/gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor to detect the phone.

[Bug 1423182] Re: Gnome-flashback: No (easy) way to log out

2015-02-19 Thread Ville Ranki
I just tested, it's possible to add the User menu to panel manually and
then log out. So this is just a case of bad default configuration. Do
you know which package handles that?

[Bug 1423182] [NEW] Gnome-flashback: No (easy) way to log out

2015-02-18 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

I just installed Ubuntu 14.10 and Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon fails
(another issue) and starts Gnome-flashback as a fallback desktop.

The default Gnome has only Applications and Places menu and no way to
log out or restart the computer.

Workaround is to start a terminal and reboot the computer from it.

[Bug 1423182] Re: Gnome-flashback: No (easy) way to log out

2015-02-18 Thread Ville Ranki
The fallback desktop should be easily usable by non-skilled users and
currently it is not. This is not a bug but bad default configuration.
Perhaps it would be a solution if gnome-session-flashback would depend
on indicator-applet and any other packages possibly needed.

[Bug 1323276] [NEW] Rhythmbox UI lagging in actually_add_monitor

2014-05-26 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

1. Launch rhythmbox, it works nicely for 15-30 mins
2. At some point RB's UI becomes very sluggish. For example changing song may
take 15-30 seconds.

This happens every time i run RB so it's easily reproducable.

I investigated it a bit, and seems that the UI thread is blocked in
actually_add_monitor. Full
backtrace follows:

[Bug 1268197] Re: UI freeze when doing import from 'Music' folder on first run

I think i can confirm this. I'm updating a large collection mounted on a sftp
share. Importing
progresses quite long, but after a while (1 hour or so ) ui becomes
unresponsive. This happens every time.

Here's a backtrace of the issue. The cause may also be in libgio.

I'm getting an almost similar crash which happens daily when i start the
computer. The function is g_object_new_valist().

I usually send the error report, but i have not found any traces of it on
launchpad. According to stack trace, the crash happens in
alarm_queue_init() - config_data_get_timezone() - g_settings_new() -
g_object_new().

This is on ubuntu 13.10 with all updates installed. Let me know if need
to provide any more information.

[Bug 688700] Re: gvfsd-sftp several minutes consumes all available CPU resources , if try connect to unreachable SSH host.

2013-10-28 Thread Ville Ranki
Looks like i just encountered this issue. I have a sftp host which was
unaccessible for some time (ssh connection just hangs). The host started
working but I was wondering why the computer felt slow. This is the
reason (output from top):

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

Looks like gfvsd-sftp does not handle the error condition properly and
is stuck in busy loop.

Backtrace of the situation (doesn't look very helpful):

I'm not sure if the issue can be easily reproduced but there seems to be
a bug.

[Bug 447431] Re: gnome-settings-daemon dies with BadMatch

2013-05-06 Thread Ville Ranki
I'm getting this or similiar error on Mint Nadia. On every login gtk
theme crashes and .xsession-error contains:

(gnome-settings-daemon:1878): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon'
received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 770 error_code 8 request_code 131 minor_code 22)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
gnome-session[1779]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-settings-daemon.desktop'

[Bug 936257] Re: the system settings grid shouldn't use a fixed geometry

2012-12-01 Thread Ville Ranki
Another real life issue caused by fixed size: I wanted to redirect audio
to another pc using pulseaudio. Right-click on volume applet, select
sound settings. Sound settings has a list of audio outputs, but they do
not fit into the list horizontally so i can't tell which one is the one
i want to choose. Naturally i tried to resize the window but it's not
possible.

I did the same again, but now for some reason the layout is different - the
list is stretched so that the output names are fully visible BUT right side of
the window (balance slider, test button etc) do not fit in the layout and are
cropped.
I could file another bug about the sound settings page but the root cause is
window geometry being fixed.

How about releasing the fix in Quantal asap? RB has been broken since
quantal release it's a bit annoying. Matttbe's package fixes the issue
here too, but average users won't be installing from PPA.

[Bug 819304] Re: gvfsd-cdda crashed with signal 5 in _g_dbus_oom()

2012-02-24 Thread Ville Ranki
This bug breaks sound-juicer - see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663459 . I'd raise the
priority on this one as sound-juicer is Gnome's default audio ripper and
the only one i've found that supports MusicBrainz submitting.

[Bug 919653] [NEW] gedit freezes when opening a binary file

2012-01-21 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

I found a way to freeze gedit. Sorry if this is a duplicate.

- Go to http://html5boilerplate.com/
- Download the stripped boilerplate
- For some reason gedit is the default application for this file, which in
reality seems to be a zip.
- Gedit window opens, but is empty and does not close with close button.

[Bug 894347] Re: Force Quit applet never quits

2011-12-27 Thread Ville Ranki
This happened to me again. I was trying to kill disk usage analyzer
which stopped working.

I was able to get rid of the click on misbehaving app dialog after
killing metacity and gnome-panel. After this keyboard didn't respond any
more so i was forced to restart X.

[Bug 894347] [NEW] Force Quit applet never quits

2011-11-24 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) add Force Quit applet to panel
2) get a large file (70 megs in this case) and rename it to end with .sh
3) open the file with gedit. gedit freezes.
4) click on Force a misbehaving application to quit applet
5) the applet starts, but clicking anywhere does nothing. Pressing esc does
nothing.

I didn't find a way to exit this situation without killing gnome-session
from VT and this caused unsaved work to be lost.

[Bug 798627] [NEW] DBUS error when connecting to sftp share

2011-06-17 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There are already a plenty of bugs about nautilus dbus errors, but not one
exactly like
this. Feel free to make this a duplicate if needed.

I have a ssh server running on non-standard port 42. I also have keys exchanged
so i don't need
password to log in. I try to connect to it using nautilus (places | connect to
server | ..).

After a few minutes a error dialog pops up:

Could not display xxx
Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.
Please select another viewer and try again.

The mount is still displayed in Nautilus sidebar (ftp for user on host)
but no files are displayed in it.

If i choose another directory and return to the mount, nautilus again
displays the same error after a while.

Note: This used to work on 10.10. On 11.04 it doesn't.

The only seekable ones i found in a quick test are VBR or high bitrate encoded

Binary package hint: empathy

I'm trying to join an chat room on a xmpp server. After clicking Join nothing
happens.
The debug log says common_request_channel_cb: got error: room is invite only
so
is suppose the room is invite only. Empathy should tell this to user instead of
failing silently.

This might be related to #540525

[Bug 680928] [NEW] Clicking on a name in e-mail header does not auto-fill To: field in new e-mail

2010-11-24 Thread Ville Ranki

[Bug 452214] [NEW] Nautilus should ask user to empty trash if media is full

2009-10-15 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Steps to reproduce:

1. Copy a lot of files to a media (usb stick for example) so that
it's almost full

2. Delete some files on the media to free space

3. Try to copy a new file to the media

4. Operation fails because disk is full. User is confused.

Expected behavior:

The media is full. Would you like to empty trash on it and
try copying again?

This is related to #12893, but probably also applies to
non-removable media also.

[Bug 438217] [NEW] Privacy issue: screensaver displays images from Pictures directory

2009-09-28 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I just noticed that gnome-screensaver has a screensaver which displays
random pictures from ~/Pictures without asking. This can be a serious
privacy issue, if user has confidential images (read: home porn) in the
directory. F-Spot imports photos to ~/Pictures by default.

[Bug 423623] [NEW] Rhythmbox should be associated with m3u files

2009-09-03 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

In Ubuntu Jaunty opening a .m3u file with Firefox only offers it to be
opened with Totem. I think Rhythmbox would be much better default action
for .m3u files.

[Bug 414762] [NEW] Doubleclicking randomly shows wrong directory

2009-08-17 Thread Ville Ranki
Public bug reported:

This bug occurs randomly but often when browsing files and directories
in List View.

Double-clicking a directory opens other directory than which was clicked
(opening here means
showing its subdirectories in list view, not changing to that directory). It
seems that usually
the directory that opens is in top of the list while selecting something from
bottom of the list,
never the directory below the one that was clicked.

This happens on 2 Jaunty PC's. Both are not state of the art (1.8Ghz pc and
1.4Ghz laptop) and
i believe more often when browsing remote shares.

The bug is probably a duplicate as it happens so often and is a bit
difficult to describe sorry for that.

This is reproducible every time - also by changing month by arrow keys

[Bug 123460] Re: Rhythmbox:Error while saving song information:Internal GStreamer problem

2009-04-20 Thread Ville Ranki
Could Per's patch be included in Ubuntu version of Rhythmbox? I think
it's really weird that Ubuntu's default desktop's default music player
can have showstopper bugs like this.

2009-04-06 Thread Ville Ranki
I'm not 100% sure what this change does as i haven't studied the source
code more deeply. After the change RB seems to be running just fine
though.

Everyone should understand that my fix just disables the error dialog,
not the original bug that causes it.

[Bug 123460] Re: Rhythmbox:Error while saving song information:Internal GStreamer problem

2009-04-04 Thread Ville Ranki
I got too annoyed because of this not being fixed and did a quick hack
for myself.

I commented out the line 320 in metadata/rb-metadata-dbus-client.c:

g_set_error (error,
 RB_METADATA_ERROR,
 RB_METADATA_ERROR_INTERNAL,
 _(Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug));

Now rb doesn't bitch about this and is usable once again. I attached a
fixed build.

Enjoy.
