I am having the same problem as above. I used to use xchat under debian,
but switched to ubuntu with my new PC a few months ago. I've not been
able to use it to connect to the freenode #ubuntu channel since.

I run xchat-gnome from the command line, and it starts up ok, connects
to freenode, sends my nick password / etc.

Then I get the channel selection window, if I type in the channel name (ubuntu) 
and click join channel, both the main windows and the join channel window die, 
and I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xchat-gnome 

(xchat-gnome:25886): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strsplit: assertion `string != NULL' 
failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

as the output in the terminal.

I have attached the file from /var/crash as well

It would be helpful to be able to use irc.... I'll try and use some
other irc clients...
