I've similar problems (don't know if it's the same cause):
If I wait some seconds, Nautilus hangs when browsing a folder with an .svg
inside, probably while creating the icon preview.
If I disable icon preview it works fine.

If I leave system monitor open while working often some ended processes remains
in the list, apparently random.
Anyway there's a way I can trigger this bug every time, I do the following:
- launch gnome system monitor
- open a shell window and launch avscan program from the command line, start a

Sometimes it happens while opening/closing CD tray: I was opening many CDs
(with System Monitor running) and switching to System-Monitor I noticed 10-11
eject uninterruptible processes listed.
They were all inexistent: top

Update:
At least in my case the problem was with the composite extension.
**Disabling composite extension completely solved the problem: no more
freezes on logout.**

It's not a problem with restricted driver...
I have really similar problems (ATI card too, radeon 7000) and I use the
*opensource* (ati) driver, NOT the restricted one...
(the restricted driver doesn't support my card model anyway).
