[Bug 1877439] [NEW] calendar reminders are shown two different ways simultaneously

2020-05-07 Thread bgruber
Public bug reported:

See attached image. I have a google calendar sync'd with gnome-calendar.
When there's a reminder for an event, it shows both as a normal gnome
shell notification and additionally with the window that pops up. I'm
guessing that the notification is from gnome-calendar and the window is
some remnant of evolution (which is not installed), but I have no idea
what remnant that might be or how to turn it off.

nowadays, you still can't click on the link in the tooltip, but you also

you right-click and choose Information. I think it may be time to

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04

2011-10-10 Thread bgruber
most (all?) of the bugs labeled as duplicates of this one are reporting
a related issue, but not exactly the same one. This bug seems to be that
the show menu bar options makes no sense in an environment such as
unity and so should be hidden. The duplicates are about environments
such as gnome-shell where there is no global menu bar. In that case the
show menu bar option is broken, which I would think is significantly
more annoying but probably affects fewer users (though I count myself
among their ranks). I leave it to the maintainers to decide if these are
really the same bug.

[Bug 797007] [NEW] new tab can push terminal window off the screen

2011-06-13 Thread bgruber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In natty, gnome-terminal 2.32.1-0ubuntu3:

Open a terminal window with a single tab. Move it so that the bottom
edge of the terminal is on the bottom of the screen. Now, open a new
tab, which has the effect of making the window taller. The bottom of the
window is now past the bottom of the screen.

I seem to recall this bug existing before, and getting fixed. It's not a
problem on my machine that still runs Maverick.

[Bug 589012] Re: totem won't do progressive download for flv videos

2010-06-06 Thread bgruber
It does the progressive download for me with the plugin.

For what video? How do you know it's one in an FLV container? Totem's
YouTube plugin does not, as far as I can tell, allow you to choose which
format you get, except indirectly by setting your connection speed. I
notice that when I set my connection speed to 512, it won't do
progressive download on any of the videos I select, but when I set it to
Intranet/LAN, it does. It picks fmt=5 (an FLV container) when set to
512, and fmt=18 (an mp4 container) when set to Intranet.

As an example: the first URL is what I get in totem when I set my
connection speed to intranet and do a youtube search for tron. The
second is the first result when I set my connection speed to 512 Kbps.
The only difference is the fmt=18 at the end. The first one buffers and
plays almost instantly, while the second one does not.

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=-3ODe9mqoDEt
=vjVQa1PpcFP9ODzDI-Q1VYwCgPGh86toYtHlHFGtGFg%3Dfmt=18

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=-3ODe9mqoDEt=vjVQa1PpcFOK2hVl0QlGv6WQBgkJznali8MnU4_ZXxo%3D

In any case, the bug is confirmed upstream.

[Bug 589012] Re: totem won't do progressive download for flv videos

2010-06-03 Thread bgruber
added upstream bug.

i know this is off-topic, but as for why i would want to replace the
flash player on youtube pages instead of using totem's youtube plugin:

90% of the time when i'm watching a youtube video it's because someone
sent me a link to it. There doesn't seem to be a way to feed a youtube
link to totem and have it show the video, and even then, to get the same
level of convenience we'd have to work it out so that the browser opens
totem when clicking on a youtube link, which of course are just http.
And I still wouldn't do it if I could, because I prefer using youtube's
interface to youtube over totem's for a variety of reasons. Frankly,
with the greasemonkey script the youtube experience is pretty great,
with the exception of this bug.

to bring this back on-topic: this bug also manifests itself using
totem's youtube plugin.

[Bug 589012] [NEW] totem won't do progressive download for flv videos

2010-06-02 Thread bgruber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

With most online videos, totem will do progressive download, filling up
its buffer and then starting playback while it continues to download the
rest of the video. For some reason it won't do this with FLV files. It
doesn't start playing until the entire video is downloaded.

I first noticed this on YouTube using a greasemonkey script that
replaces the flash player with a native plugin. fmt=18 videos, which are
mp4, begin playing almost immediately, while fmt=34 or fmt=35, which are
flv, do not. I then confirmed it with some other videos. Here's one
posted by someone reporting this problem on ubuntuforums:
http://hd.spaziogames.eu/hd20/2009/9/psp/4018.flv

I tried it in banshee and it works fine, so this seems to be specific to
totem and not gstreamer.

[Bug 462369] Re: changing visual effects to none doesn't override a saved session that contains compiz

2009-10-28 Thread bgruber
You don't have to keep switching as you're suggesting. Just switching
once would be enough to break things. In my case, I'm having trouble
with my video since upgrading to Karmic (see bugs #413259 and #44139)
and attempted to turn off compiz. It took me 3 days to figure out why,
no matter how many times I did it, I was still getting either compiz or,
later, no window manager at all (compiz was failing to start) whenever I
rebooted my machine (often, since those other bugs are causing my
computer to freeze with a frequency exceeding that I experienced when I
upgraded from DOS 6.22 to Windows 95).

I have to say that it seems poor practice to present users with a
feature but shrug off bug reports about it because they are not
supposed to use it. I am also surprised that you classified something
that is clearly a bug as a wishlist item. Do you consider turning off
desktop effects turns them off to be wishful thinking?

Furthermore, the fact that a fix would require changing user
configuration seems irrelevant to me. By changing the option on the
Visual Effects page to none, is the user not requesting precisely
that their configuration be changed?

2009-10-28 Thread bgruber
If what you are saying is this is hard to fix and I don't think too
many people will come across it i understand that. I still think
setting it to wishlist is inappropriate because that label usually
implies something like a feature request rather than a request that
something work the way it's purported to. I also think presuming that
users won't use a feature because you think they shouldn't is a bad
idea.

[Bug 462369] [NEW] changing visual effects to none doesn't override a saved session that contains compiz

2009-10-27 Thread bgruber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Saving your session in gnome works again (hooray!) by doing
System-Preferences-Startup Applications-Options tab-Remember
currently running application[sic]

If you're running compiz (I didn't check what happens if you're running
metacity) and hit that button, it saves session data for compiz. If you
then go to the appearance preferences-visual effects and choose none,
it switches the window manager to metacity (I don't know what it changes
to do that).

However, the next time you log in, the session data takes over and tries
to start compiz anyway. Removing the appropriate file in $HOME/.config
/gnome-session/saved-session solved the problem for me.

[Bug 178544] Re: e-d-s should use gnome-keyring again

2008-02-07 Thread bgruber
My understanding is that the feature was disabled because of the problem
that Gustavo had mentioned: previously, the keyring didn't unlock
automatically at login, so if you saved your password, whenever you
started evolution it would ask for the keyring password, thereby making
saving the password less attractive.

Migrating would be nice, since even after the user would re-enter their
passwords, the old unencrypted password file remains. This starts to seem like
an upstream bug, and indeed, there are a couple of mentions of it I can find on
gnome bugzilla:
