[Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

2013-04-28 Thread candtalan
I need to stay on 12.04 LTS (!)
FWIW I found that restarting the machine and reinserting the usb stick, gave me
a normally functional usb with nautilus.
Another fix was to install an alternative file manager Thunar, and make use of
this while the problem occurred.

[Bug 1076880] Re: network speed incorrectly reported in System Monitor using VPN

2012-11-09 Thread candtalan
Hi Robert
The axis labels seem appropriate to the speed value apparently seen by system
monitor. It is th eapparent speed value seen by system monitor which is too
large. To keep th einitial report simple, I did not mention the similar
apparent inaccuracy in system monitor indication of upload speed also, in fact
it was the upload speed being (incorrectly far too large that brought my
attention to this - I am using VPN for the first time and running (Ubuntu,
floss) torrents in Transmission. With VPN the upload speed is shown as say, 90
(ish) but I have set the global up speed to be limited to 45. It was my
concern that I had either lost control of the upload speed, or thatsomehow VPN
was throwing a very fast upload capability. My ISP doe not traffic shape at
all, and also I could not can not see why a VPN should cause a large increase
in what should be a controlled speed of upload. My expected max upload speed
should be just over 100, say 120 (ISP says currently - Bandwidth (Up/Down)
[kbps/kbps]:1.072 / 7.407)

My conclusion fwiw is that Transmission seems to report correct (upload
) speeds (set to say 50) when VPN is used, but System Monitor seems to
give incorrectly high indications, and also not steady values either.

If more screen shots or even if a live view somehow could help let me
know please?

I have just compared with KNemo, and to a visual approximate assessment,

[Bug 1076880] [NEW] network speed incorrectly reported in System Monitor using VPN

2012-11-08 Thread candtalan
Public bug reported:

looks similar to bug #957617

When using a VPN and monitoring up and download speeds shown in System
monitor (ubuntu 12.04), then the indicated speeds are much greater than
they apparently should be. When VPN is stoped and normal connection
used, then indicate speeds are as expected.

[Bug 985119] Re: [soundnua]: doesn't offer 'Analogue stereo Output' option

2012-05-07 Thread candtalan
@Conor Curran (cjcurran) It is not to do with sound output, or streaming, as is
used in say skype, or play audio from bbc radio, it is specific to capture of
that audio, and how that is managed in a recording app (Sound Recorder). I do
not know much about this but I think it might be related to something called
'loopback'.
I tried using another mixer - I installed QasMixer from Ubntu Software Centre,
and in a new install of Ubuntu (no gnome classic available) recording is ok if
'loopback enable' is set. I guess that loopback is a facility to tap into the
played audio, for record function.

Duplex is presumably a facility to use both in and out streams simultaneously,
yet this does not (presumably) feed the record input facility, so sound clips
cannot be captured.

[Bug 985119] Re: [soundnua]: doesn't offer 'Analogue stereo Output' option

2012-04-21 Thread candtalan
In my (three) machines, skype works afaik (uses usb, which is an
external audio and vid device) however, when listening to streaming
audio or the Examples files for example, the -built in- audio is used
ok, but no record level is got from the sound recorder. Note that using
the gnome classic desktop environment, the successful choices *can* be
made. And still, (in gnome classic) duplex does not give audio to sound
recorder, only output does. Suggests it is associated with the way
sound settings, audio apps, are , in unity vs gnome classic? The
hardware is obviously capable. thanks

[Bug 985119] Re: Sound Recorder does not record sound

2012-04-19 Thread candtalan
In this machine I have, by chance, also got gnome classic login session
available.
I notice that in sound settings, using gnome classic desktop environment, the
mode using 'Analogue stereo Output', works ok.
However, in Unity, only 'Analogue stereo duplex' (not 'Analogue stereo Output')
is offered and this does not work, (and in other earlier versions of Ubuntu
over the years, has never worked in these three different machines). It seems
to me to be significant that the particular setting is not offered, or is not
recognised.
I attach a couple of screenshots of sound settings, one of unity, the other in
the gnome classic desktop in this machine.

[Bug 985119] Re: Sound Recorder does not record sound

2012-04-18 Thread candtalan
I notice that in Sound Settings, the Hardware tab seems to show only a
limited range od Profile options which do not include 'Analogue stereo
Output', which - for me - usualy works. the profile offers Analogue
stereo duplex, which does not seem to work here.

Aside:
I had installed AWN and it is now removed, however it brough t with it options
for a classic Gnome session which I have since tried.
I find that the Sound Settings Hardware profile option 'Analogue stereo
Output' is offered, an dsound record works with that setting.

Does this mean that Sound Settings Hardware is somehow limited when
using Unity?

Re install 12.04 in one machine, fully updated now, nothing else
installed, Sound Record (from Built-In Audio) not working still.

I should say that sound record *does* work from a microphone and also
from the usb microphone integral in a webcam I use for such as skype.

It seems the lack of recognition of the internal audio hardware
seems to prevent record from 'Built-In Audio'.

2010-11-07 Thread candtalan
I get loss of panels from a fully updated ubuntu 10.10 in an old machine with
lots of RAM, also in fact in Ubuntu 10.04 also.
The comment above by Alvils Berzins is very interesting indeed because my
problem machine is PIII 650MHz, right in his proposed trouble range.
The Ubuntuforums thread re ubuntu 10.10 which includes the post

starts with an apparent X crash but then also reveals the same 'missing panels'
situation which was seen in the same machine in ubuntu 10.04.

It is beginning to look as if I just cannot make use of Ubuntu for these
old machines...

[Bug 566026] [NEW] MoviePlayer does not display unless at full screen

2010-04-18 Thread candtalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

lucid 10.04 beta with updates daily downloads.
Problem:
If a list of videos is seen in nautilus and attempted to view by opening
movieplayer from right click in the nautilus list, then the movieplayer window
shows black (but audio is ok). If now a cursor right click is used in the black
area, then fleeting video picture is seen.
If now the viewing is set to full screen, then a full good picture is seen ok.
If now you leave full screen then picture area again shows only black.

Alternative (works no problem):
If movieplayer is first opened simply as an application, with no target video
file, and THEN, the movieplayer menu is used:
MovieOpen[target file]
then under this starting condition, the movieplayer video displays normally.

This seems to occur with all the file types I can try, that is, it does
not seem to be dependent on file types, rather though, on the method of
starting the video in movieplayer.

[Bug 463870] Re: gnome-appearance-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__VOID()

2010-03-30 Thread candtalan
ubuntu 10.04 beta1 installed from CD clean, and updates from update
manager. Then today I used update manager again, and saw 200 or more
updates waiting so I accepted the install.

A restart was required so I did that.
After the restart, I wanted to look at themes, I am on the default theme at
present, with the windows button positions slightly changed after a small edit
a few days ago. I wanted to view other themes. However, the window for
Appearance did not appear, this crash occurred.

[Bug 463870] Re: gnome-appearance-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__VOID()

2010-03-28 Thread candtalan
10.04 beta
I don't like the default theme so, unlike my previous use of ubuntu I will
certainly be making use of theme edit in future. Bugs with theme edit will
become a major irritant to me if the default theme stays.
