[Bug 1455304] Re: gnome-session-quit stopped working: phase changed after first call to QUERY_END_SESSION

2015-05-16 Thread Daniel Hahler
Closing this as Invalid - at least it seems to be by design: with GNOME,
gnome-shell is meant to listen and respond to the phase change (asking for
confirmation).
Without gnome-shell (or unity), you will be logged out if nothing intervenes.

I'm now using my own confirmation dialog (zenity), and then use `gnome-
session-quit --logout --no-prompt`, which really ends the session then.

[Bug 1455304] [NEW] gnome-session-quit stopped working: phase changed after first call to QUERY_END_SESSION

2015-05-14 Thread Daniel Hahler
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use a custom gnome-session with the Awesome window
manager, but the session is not working.

The configuration is based on
http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Quickly_Setting_up_Awesome_with_Gnome#Gnome_3.9_.2F_Ubuntu_13.10
and was working with Ubuntu 14.04.

I have upgraded to 15.04, through 14.10.

In the resulting session, which I start from lightdm, the following command
will not result in an error on the first call,
but does nothing (no dialog etc). Calling it again will then result in an
error (see below).

% gnome-session-quit --logout

[Bug 1445509] [NEW] pm-hibernate should fallback to pm-suspend on Kernel change

2015-04-17 Thread Daniel Hahler
Public bug reported:

Using pm-hibernate might be prevented by /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d
/000kernel-change.

In this case it would be useful if it could (optionally?) fall back to
pm-suspend.

Also, gnome-session-quit --power-off should display the Hibernate
action as greyed out / disabled right away.

I am using gnome-session-quit 3.9.90-0ubuntu12 and 1.4.1-13ubuntu0.1 (the later
now upgraded to 1.4.1-15).

Really using the exec command in ~/.profile would stop the execution
of the main process (/usr/sbin/lightdm-session), so I suppose your
~/.profile did not literally contain the above lines. To understand if
it was a false positive, you need to tell us more.

It does not stop the execution / replace the current process, but only
redirects the file descriptors when used like this (1 (stdout) and 2 (stderr)).

It's fine like it is and expected - just wanted to provide it as feedback
nonetheless.

Cheers,
Daniel.

[Bug 678421] Re: Error message for a faulty ~/.profile script

2015-02-25 Thread Daniel Hahler
Thanks for working on this!

For what it's worth, I've been using the following, and had to move the
set -x now below the exec 2$logfile, otherwise this was detected
as being an error.

1. I've been using the following in ~/.profile, mainly for debugging
purposes:

logfile=/tmp/debug-profile-calls.log
echo -n Calling .profile (via $0) $logfile
date $logfile
echo SHELL: $SHELL $logfile

set -x
exec 1$logfile
exec 2$logfile

2. I was confused that kdialog was being used / preferred: I am using
some KDE apps, but use awesome WM and the software stack based on
Unity/Gnome. Maybe there's a better method to detect a KDE system than
just checking if kdialog is installed.

In case this still happens to you: you could get an strace log using the
following command:

sudo strace -f -p $(pgrep gnome-terminal) -o /tmp/gnome-terminal-
strace.txt

Abort it after a few seconds and then attach it here.

[Bug 272749] Re: Set window manager URGENT hint on bell.

2014-03-29 Thread Daniel Hahler
Mikel,

I have used the patches from your website:
http://mikelward.com/software/gnome/flashing-terminal, and obviously
missed the config schema stuff.

Does this patch after all is able to just forward the terminal bell by
setting the X client window's urgent property? Because that's all I want it to
do.
For monitoring activity etc I would use tmux then, but without gnome-terminal
forwarding/handling the terminal bell from tmux, this does not work currently.

[Bug 272749] Re: Set window manager URGENT hint on bell.

2014-03-25 Thread Daniel Hahler
FWIW, I have tried to create a package, with the patch (obviously not
properly) refreshed, but it failed to build (against gnome-terminal in
trusty, built in a saucy pbuilder):

libtool: link: gcc -pthread -DVTE_SEAL_ENABLE -I/usr/include/glib-2.0
-I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/include/pango-1.0
-I/usr/include/gtk-3.0 -I/usr/
gnome_terminal-terminal-screen.o: In function `terminal_screen_beep_cb':
/tmp/buildd/gnome-terminal-3.6.2/src/terminal-screen.c:769: undefined reference
to `GTK_WIDGET_HAS_FOCUS'

Maybe it will work in the trusty PPA?
https://launchpad.net/~blueyed/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/4045470/+listing-

At least there is a patch therein, which applies.

[Bug 272749] Re: Set window manager URGENT hint on bell.

2014-03-25 Thread Daniel Hahler
There should show up a package at
https://launchpad.net/~blueyed/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/4046208/+listing-
archive-extra

However, I do not see the options (and they are not in the patch as far
as I can see).

From your description it also does not look like it solves the single
set the X client/window's urgent flag on the event of a terminal bell,
as in `sleep 5; echo ^G` (try C-VC-G to get the real ^G (bell
code)) and then tabbing away.

** Description changed:

I have noticed that pydoc -k . hangs on my system.

This method is used by vim-ref (https://github.com/thinca/vim-ref/) to
get a list of all entries.

Stepping thorugh it via ipdb, it hangs at:

   /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/module.py(171)__getattr__()
- 170 elif isinstance(info, RegisteredTypeInfo):
+ 170 elif isinstance(info, RegisteredTypeInfo):
  -- 171 g_type = info.get_g_type()
- 172
+ 172

+ Upgrading python-gi to 3.11.5-0ubuntu1 (from 3.10.0-1ubuntu1) fixed this
+ particular issue. Now `pydoc -k .` segfaults instead (later on).

With `strace -f`, this is where it hangs:

[Bug 1224575] Re: gnome-control-center keyboard no longer has way to modify caps lock key behavior

** Also affects: gnome-control-center via
   https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=703967
   Importance: Unknown
   Status: Unknown

** Description changed:

Up until Raring, it was trivial to use the gnome-control-center to modify
caps lock key behavior.
In earlier versions you could do the following:
   - Launch System Settings
   - Click on Keyboard Layout
   - Click on Options
   - These options allow one to modify Caps Lock Key behavior (for example swap
it with ESC)

In newer versions of Saucy I try to do the following:
    - Launch System Settings
    - Click on Keyboard
    - Click on Layout Settings
    - Cannot find a location similar to these older options

These older 'Keyboard Layout Options' made it very easy to do things
like swaping Caps Lock for ESC which make vim users much happier.

2012-06-24 Thread Daniel Hahler
** Description changed:

nautilus-sendto crashes immediately when being opened from Nautilus or

[Bug 882040] Re: should let users enable or disable suspend and hibernate

2012-06-02 Thread Daniel Hahler
I think the best method is to just use pm-suspend-hybrid:
the system is fast to resume if you wake it up within 15 minutes again, but
suspends to disk after this and saves all the energy which Suspend To RAM would
still use.
If your system supports it, you can easily make suspend behave as
suspend-to-disk:

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later in gnome-terminal

2011-12-17 Thread Daniel Hahler
I have still experienced this buggy using gnome-terminal and its menubar
after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise.

I have fixed it now by installing any missing recommends, using sudo
apt-get install --fix-policy --install-recommends.

One or multiple of the packages this installed appears to have fixed it.
And it is likely to be a package which is present when installing
Oneiric from scratch (where this is a non-issue for me).

Here's the list of packages containing menu or indicator in its name:
appmenu-gtk3 0.3.0-0ubuntu1
gir1.2-dbusmenu-gtk-0.4 0.5.1-0ubuntu2
gnome-menus 3.2.0-0ubuntu2

[Bug 787465] Re: View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later in gnome-terminal

2011-10-23 Thread Daniel Hahler
The workaround is to uninstall/purge appmenu-gtk and appmenu-gtk3 (if present).
This package also contains the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80appmenu* files.

@Jeremy: when appmenu-gtk is uninstalled, gnome-terminal behaves
properly (regarding the Show menubar by default setting), at least for
me.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

If you click on the global menus the View-Show MenuBar and (un)check
it, it won't work, the menu will stay at the 'global menus panel' or
whatever it is. In my opinion this option shouldn't exist now,
considering that global menus are the future, and also considering that
a global menu has the advantage not to keep its own space on the screen
  :)
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+ sudo apt-get purge appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3

Might be related to handling of the menu (which would occupy one row).
Please note that it appears to be buggy in some regards, so it might even
consume one row although it's not being displayed. See also bug 863309.

[Bug 826041] Re: Global Menu broken - the menu is showing up in the window

I am closing this as Fix released, if it's fixed indeed.

However, it is not fixed in my current setup, where I've upgraded from Natty.
This is better handled in bug 863309 though.

Thank you for your report.

Do you have both nautilus-open-terminal and ubuntuone-client-gnome

If so, this would be a duplicate of bug 865115 and you could work around
it by uninstalling one of the packages to work around this.

Please report back here. Thanks.

Thanks for your bug report and investigation. I can confirm this for
Natty.

It looks like just the default state is handled improperly for this
checkbox (until it gets saved once).

The following comment may help when investigating to fix this:

[Bug 769900] Re: Login Screen does not remember no-sounds setting

2011-05-13 Thread Daniel Hahler
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 675918 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/675918

There is a separate place to configure the sounds for the login manager
(gdm), and it is affected by a bug where you have to check and uncheck
the box once to make it stick.

See bug 778569.

[Bug 29881] Re: Closing the lid should lock the screen if locking is activated in gnome-screensaver

2011-05-13 Thread Daniel Hahler
@ogra: has this regressed (in Natty)?
Although I have selected Blank screen with When laptop lid is closed in the
On AC Power the screen does not get locked when closing the lid. The same
with the On Battery Power tab.

[Bug 156226] Re: Screen is not locked when laptop lid is closed

2011-05-13 Thread Daniel Hahler
I have tried it with both /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/blank_screen
and /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/use_screensaver_settings enabled: the
screen appears to get locked only after the screensaver kicks in, not
when closing the lid.

I have set the lid action to Blank screen in gnome-power-preferences.

[Bug 757866] [NEW] gsettings uses the 'memory' GSettings backend / settings do not stick?!

2011-04-11 Thread Daniel Hahler
Public bug reported:

Is it expected that gsettings will use the memory backend?
From the extra message I do not think so, and it may be the reason why I
cannot change this whitelist or the changes to the Unity starter are not being
remembered through re-logins.

% gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist
GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings will not
be saved or shared with other applications.

[Bug 755898] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon not available in apps started from global shortcuts

2011-04-09 Thread Daniel Hahler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When setting up a global shortcut via gnome-keybinding-properties (e.g.
`gnome-terminal`), the application started from there will not have the
environment set up to work with gnome-keyring-daemon ($SSH_AUTH_SOCK is
missing).

When searching for it, I've found an older Debian bug about it
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=339785):
