[Bug 1770850] Re: Login Screen text missing

2018-05-12 Thread dino99
Looks like the 'recommended' packages are not installed. Plymouth
'recommend' either plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text or plymouth-theme

>From a tty console, run startx
You can reinstall 'ubuntu-desktop' to see if other packages are also missing.

Take time to clean the system after a dist-upgrade, via gtkorphan &
bleachbit (as root, carefully select options) and reboot.

Finally glance at warnings/errors via 'journalctl-b'

[Bug 1761382] Re: Unable to connect to ibus: Could not connect: Connection refused

2018-04-05 Thread dino99
@Daniel

ibus: It provides full featured and user friendly input method user
interface.

i cant tell it breaks something, but probably does not provide internal outputs
needed by the system. Otherwise tell me why ubuntu has decided to add ibus
packages to the required package list ?
Actually used by: 'indicator-keyboard' 'gnome-control-center' at least.
So how to know those really work as they might ?

[Bug 1754872] Re: gnome-control-center is unusable on xubuntu-desktop, but called from Gear (About this Computer, System Settings) icon, Text Entry Settings, clock (Time & Date Settings)

2018-04-01 Thread dino99
Hello Norbert

Such cases are expected:
- each DE have its own environment and architecture that can be compatible with
an other one, or not.
- In fact the relationship between them does not really exist, and testing has
not been done to resolve the possible conflict.

Lot of reports have been sent since ages by users discovering free OSs
and testing and mixing different DEs. The result is quite often the
same: most of the time it ends by a clean reinstall.

But the future, when snap installation will become mature and stable,
will allow such freedom.

So the actual logic might declare such report as 'wont fix'

[Bug 1760274] Re: videos are stuttering extremely

2018-04-01 Thread dino99
Then it looks like a libglib2.0-0 error, which is totem dependency.
Maybe related to your hardware/mem.

Checking the totem settings, via dconf (dconf-editor), all the options here are
'off' except the first one 'autoload-chapters'
(org.gnome.totem)

Note: #4 expose glib error, but #6 says no error !!!
Note2: is there some 'journalctl -b' related error when you double click on a
mp4 video to be played via totem ?

** Package changed: gstreamer1.0 (Ubuntu) => glib2.0 (Ubuntu)

Yeah but that tweak is quite dirty: try to downgrade from
0.26.1-3ubuntu2 to 0.26.0-2ubuntu3, and you are proposed to remove half
of the packages list.

Maybe set the proposed version higher than the previous proposed one to
bypass that issue.

uh !! bionic-proposed is already at 0.26.1-3ubuntu2

so 0.26.0-2ubuntu3 is supposed to be uploaded to Artful archive , not
bionic.

[Bug 1694454] Re: Can't open gnome terminal

2018-03-28 Thread dino99
Users affected:

- which DE is used ?
- is it a rolling installation ?
- can you confirm that issue when loging an other user ?
- try cleaning the system via deborphan and bleachbit (as root, but carefully
select options)
- is journalctl show useful warnings/errors ?

After doing the requesting steps, and still having the issue, then
report your own bug to send real apport details; that report is outdated
and cant help devs to fix the problem as it concern an other more recent
release and possibly different config. So that one is useless and so
closed.

[Bug 1753776] Re: Graphics corruption just before login animation to Xorg sessions (Intel gen9 GPUs only)

2018-03-17 Thread dino99
Doing some testing:

- first modifying options into /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
set [daemon] WaylandEnable=false to force xorg login :
my feeling is that should be the default now as ubuntu as made that choice for
the release (and wayland / apps still does not well together in many cases)

- then rebboting

And now the problem existing with my hardware and reported here is gone: no
distorted screen.
That system is using the 'proposed' archive and is fully updated.
What is also different now: the login options (gear button) have dropped the
wayland ones.

So my conclusion are:
- /etc/gdm3/custom.conf should use xorg, not wayland
- the issue reported gere seems have been introduced by the wayland (1.14.0-2)
changes (patch)

*
wayland (1.14.0-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/CVE-2017-16612.patch: (Closes: #889681)
- libXcursor before 1.1.15 has various integer overflows that could lead
to heap buffer overflows when processing malicious cursors, e.g., with
programs like GIMP. It is also possible that an attack vector exists
against the related code in cursor/xcursor.c in Wayland through
  1.14.0.
  * switch back to use upstream tarball
  * debian/control: bump standards version, drop priority stanzas

[Bug 1756061] Re: '/var/log/gdm3/': Permission denied

2018-03-17 Thread dino99
Thanks Tim for the head up

so done some tweaks:
- set [daemon] WaylandEnable=false to force Xorg login; should not it be the
default now ?
- set [debug] Enable=true for testing curiosity only.

If /var/log/gdm/ subdir is not used now and deprecated since systemd is
now default and journalctl logging everything, them that subdir should
be removed.

Sp please do some cleaning.

[Bug 1756061] [NEW] '/var/log/gdm3/': Permission denied

2018-03-15 Thread dino99
Public bug reported:

Since 9 Oct 2017 that subdir is unreadable and empty.

oem@ubuntu:~$ ls -la /var/log/gdm3
ls: cannot open directory '/var/log/gdm3': Permission denied
oem@ubuntu:~$ sudo ls -la /var/log/gdm3

drwx--x--x 2 root gdm4096 Oct 9 19:50 .
drwxrwxr-x 11 root syslog 4096 Mar 15 05:23 ..

So i have updated the rights:

sudo chmod +rx /var/log/gdm3/

and then get:

oem@ubuntu:~$ sudo ls -la /var/log/gdm3/
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root gdm4096 Oct 9 19:50 .
drwxrwxr-x 11 root syslog 4096 Mar 15 05:23 ..

But rebooting set back to: 'drwx--x--x 2 root gdm' and so cant register
logfile again.

[Bug 1754069] Re: bug 1164016 has regressed

2018-03-07 Thread dino99
'Released' is a dev decision, not a user one.
What you request is an upstream design choice, which we possibly get with 3.28.
So nothing can be made on old releases as they only get 'security' fix and
backport sometimes.

[Bug 1629251] Re: Some app-indicators not showing menus

2018-03-02 Thread dino99
@Simon

If you think understanding that report, tell me why 'importance' & 'assigned to
' are still not set by devs ?
When that report have been opened (2016), there was a transitional time where
many users have hit the problem, then only a few (with rolling systems/mixed
install/...)
About xenial, it will never receive 'cosmetic' fixed but only 'security' ones
and maybe some SRU/backport; nothing related to such report.

So you can still spend your time to undo what i have set, its useless
and does not help to get solutions nor 'makes ubuntu better'.

[Bug 1629251] Re: Some app-indicators not showing menus

2018-03-02 Thread dino99
Unity is dead; nobody will spend time about it.

Reporting 'bug' suppose to run a fresh real install, not one from a virtual
space, nor one disturb by old/borked settings left behind.
If the dropbox doesnot/didnot display icons while other apps correctly react,
then its a dropbox problem.

Reporting a problem on a system mixing gnome & xfce makes such report useless
too.
So let genuine install which is fully tested working as expected. If
installations are the result of many untested/unexpected configs, then dont
waste time reporting. Only report about genuine installation.
