[Bug 212902] [NEW] My video flickers in all apllications relating to video
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem I have Ubuntu 7.10 with the Studio theme installed. My video card is an ATI Radeon X1550 with 256 Mb. At first I made an attempt of manually installing my video card in Ubuntu but after several re-installations I had to resort to the Envy way of installing my video card as I was not able to get through all the setup steps in the terminal. A lot of times when I entered the commands which were explained in various forums I received error messages so I decided to give Envy a try instead. The result of this is that compiz fusion is working and all effects work well. Also I have the ATI control panel installed on my system which gives the correct output. Also the restricted drivers are installed. However, I have one problem and that is that video is not working well in any application. Even the screen saver flickers. My question is: Has this to do with a missing codec or does my card need additional configuration in Ubuntu? I have read previous comments on Envy and all are about de-installing this and manually configuring the video card. If this has to be done then could you please provide me with a clear step-by-step guide how to do this, keeping in mind that I am new to Linux in general but very willing and open to learn more about this potentially fantastic Operating System? At the moment I am still dual booting with Windows XP but find that I am less and less inclined to use this. Thank you for your support in advance. The printingbuginfo script can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript. Please also attach a PDF file created with pdfLatex that gives double-sided result. Could you try downloading the Edgy release candidate live CD to see if these problems are fixed in Edgy which has a newer cupsys and hplip. The desktop (live) CD can be downloaded here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/edgy/ Pascal, I think we can put this bug regarding my HP DeskJet network/USB printer to rest: 1. Dapper AMD64 (religiously updated): installed as USB printer (the alternative with lower-case letters), printing test page OK, and pdfLaTeX produced file no longer spontaneously in double-sided mode with printer set to single-sided. 2. Edgy AMD64 (with latest updates): same story. 3. Dapper i386 installed in Parallels VM: installed as JetDirect network printer, for the rest same as above. In all cases using just the suggested hpijs driver, and also the HPLIP packages from the liveCD installed. [Bug 64160] Cannot get rid of it...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-keyring-manager Several programmes in Edgy (like Evolution) make use of gnome-keyring or gnome-keyring-manager. The use of a keyring is of limited benefit to home users, and should IMHO not be automatically forced upon them. In my case, I have tried to remove it, but find that Synaptic then also wants to remove a slew of other packages. This, friends, is NOT what choice is all about. My suggestion: leave the use of keyrings as an installable option for those who want it (or need it), but do not make it part of the default install. ** Affects: gnome-keyring-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Cannot get rid of it... https://launchpad.net/bugs/64160 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Please, please, give your users the *choice* of using a keyring or not -- isn't that what Linux has always been about? I have removed Evolution (and the various pop-accounts) from the keyring in the gnome-keyring-manager, but *still* these keyring requests keep coming up. Now, for the pop-accounts I was able to give always permission, but this is no option for Evolution in the keyring-manager. [Bug 27239] Re: gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup
I just entered the regular IP address of the printer (in my case 192.168.1.63), without any prefix like socket:// or hp:/net/deskjet_5800?ip=192.168.1.63. The port 9100 was already indicated. This printer now works for me, but -- admittedly -- it is still not the HPLIP setup; so commands like hp-info and hp-levels do not work. Another computer is located next to the same printer and connected to it via USB. I've been able to connect it the HPLIP way following the instructions in the wiki HpPrinterInstallationAndMaintenance, first in Breezy and now also in Dapper (Beta2) plus updates. I thought we might as well cose this bug as there is already another similar one still open (yours, I believe). -- gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup https://launchpad.net/bugs/27239 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 27239] Re: gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup
It appears that this bug can be closed. I installed Dapper Beta2 today (7 May 2006) and did an apt-get update. My network printer installs OK: as an HP JetDirect printer, using as URI its LAN address (192.168.1.63) without any prefix (like socket:// or hp:/), and chose the HP DeskJet 5850 recommended hpijs driver. The test page is just perfect. Now hoping that g-c-m isn't messed up between now and final Dapper release... -- gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup https://launchpad.net/bugs/27239 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 25630] Re: Cannot configure HPLIP network printers in gnome-cups-manager
Though the HPLIP way of installing printers still does not work, my HP network printer can be installed in Dapper (Beta2 plus updates as of 7 May 2006). I was able to install my HP DeskJet 5850 network printer OK: - choose HP JetDirect printer - URI: 192.168.1.63, (your IP may differ) without any prefix like socket:// or hp:/ - choose HP DeskJet 5850 printer from the list, and accept the default hpijs driver Test page is perfect. However, this is not the HPLIP way, because /usr/bin/hp-info (and other HPLIP commands) result in error message. -- Cannot configure HPLIP network printers in gnome-cups-manager https://launchpad.net/bugs/25630 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 27239] Re: gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup
It worked in Dapper Flight 6 (see previous message), but fails again in Dapper Beta. This is what I did in Dapper Beta: 0. Hit New Printer. 1. Select Network Printer, type HP JetDirect. 2. URI: 192.168.1.63 (Port: 9100) 3. Manufacturer: HP Model: DeskJet 5850 Recommended driver: hpijs (from HPLIP) 4. When hitting Apply button, nothing happens. 5. When trying to repeat the installation by hitting New Printer, the window freezes with a message: ...application quit suddenly Again, the very same procedure was successful in Flight 6... -- gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup https://launchpad.net/bugs/27239 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 27239] Re: gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup
I have been able to successfully install an AppSocket/HPJetDirect printer with Gnome-Cups-Manager using Dapper AMD64 Live-CD Flight 6 (dated 31 March 2006). I selected type HPJetDirect (obviously), typed in the IP of the printer under URI (without socket:// prefix), chose HP (HPLIP) and the driver for HP DeskJet 5850, and everything was OK. Printed a correct Ubuntu test page. Now , why would the live-CD 386 of 20060414 mess all of this up again, I wonder... -- gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup https://launchpad.net/bugs/27239 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 27239] Re: gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup
Used live CD 20060414, there is no 20060415. My LAN printer is HP DeskJet 5850 with static IP 192.168.1.63. It is not detected by Gnome Printing Manager (GPM) when checking Detect LAN Printers in the Global Settings. Installing manually in GPM is still not possible, as the option AppSocket/HPJetDirect is not available; in Breezy I was able to circumvent GPM by installing the printer in localhost:631 as AppSocket/HPJetDirect with URI socket://192.168.1.63:9100, then choosing either HP or HPLIP as manufacturer, and DeskJet 5850 among the hpijs drivers. In Dapper, only the HPJetDirect option is present, and it is not the same as the AppSocket/HPJetDirect option. I have tried as URI all sorts of combinations: the IP with and without socket:// prefix, and with and without :9100 postfix. I've also tried, with the CUPS (IPP) printer option the URI with ipp:// and http:// prefixes and :9100 postfixes. Impossible to say if one of these works, because the hpijs drivers are not present in Dapper either; I've used DeskJet series and New DeskJet series. Anyway, whatever I do, there is no new printer appearing. I've not tried to circumvent GPM (as I did in Breezy), because the way to do that in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf has been made much more difficult and opaque in Dapper... we have regression here, not progress. -- gnome-cups-manager does not accept HPLIP printer setup https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/27239 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
