confirming in gnome-power-manager since I see this issue on two
computers, one with intel graphics, the other with ati. Also, #6 has
this issue on an ati card as well.

[i965gm] lcd backlight never stays off
The problem is that the theme used provides a black panel and the text
in GDM is very dark (if you look very closely you can see the text).

The old behavior prior to upgrading to karmic was that totem would
prevent the screen from dimming or blanking while watching a video.
With the new version of gnome-power-manager in karmic, the screen will
dim and blank while

sorry that i didn't attach this earlier, i'm kinda disorganized. I
haven't had this problem again, but after filing this bug, I decided to
do a strace before rebooting. If this doesn't provide enough
information, I guess I'll have to wait until this problem comes up
again.
